  • I was happy that I was spot on my prediction that it would take me about 6 months to complete, based on how long it took me to complete smaller puzzles; this was completed from October to April, which was perfect since this was over all of the cold months.
I tried to focus on individual sections of the puzzle, but I ended up jumping all over the place throughout, as I would get frustrated at the lack of progress on one section and would move onto other places.
The puzzle came in two separate bags and the recommendation is to work the puzzle in two 4500 piece sections and put them together at the end, but I wanted to work a 9000 piece puzzle and not two smaller ones, so I dumped both bags together at the beginning. This did add an extreme level of difficulty to the project and no doubt added significant time to the entire puzzle, but after completing it all, I'm happy I did. Since there were so many pieces to sort through, it took me two months to even finish the border.
Funny stat, this puzzle is actually 9120 piece, not just 9000 as the box advertises.
I'm extremely impressed that after 6 months, having a 2 1/2 to 3 year old 'helping' with the puzzle, using the table for wrapping Christmas gifts, and having other people and kids in the room throughout the duration, not a single piece was lost!
I did have to go buy a couple of boards for my tabletop, as my table wasn't big enough and my old 4'x4' boards I bought for my 6000 piece puzzles weren't big enough for this one.
    Final dimensions: 6.0 ft x 4.5 ft (1.92 m x 1.39 m)
    Total completion time: 6 months, Oct 13, 2018 to April 28, 2019
Total clips to stitched together: 187
    Total pieces: 9120
    Total piece lost: 0

I use exactly the same technique for larger puzzles. However, I have never come across a puzzle with more than 2000 pieces. Now I have found a place and can continue with 5000 and more. I think mixing is cool, and as you say, if I want to do 4000 piece puzzles, I can buy smaller ones. I will probably also do the 9000 with shuffling and document it on RUclips. maybe I can win you as a great role model on my channel as a subscriber. You have my subscription anyway.

You have my respect for doing a true 9000 piece puzzle. But i guess that's what i would do too, otherwise i would buy 2 4500 piece puzzle :D
My biggest one so far is 6000 though, i really need more space to go bigger, cause the puzzle will lie there for several months.

What kind of board did you work this on? I'm into really big puzzle. Those boards look perfect!

I bought two 4x8 boards from the hardware store and then cut 3 feet off the end of each, so together they created a 5'x8' tabletop

Did you work with that every day and how many hours you spend in a day?

    • @PiecesPieces
      @PiecesPieces  3 года назад

I didn't work on it every day, but a few days a week, when time would allow :) Sometimes I would spend a little as 15 minutes working on it at once while others I would work for a few hours.

@@PiecesPieces Thanks for the answer. I just finished a 5000 piece puzzle "Beneath the sea" in 59 hours (2-6h day for 14 days without calculating one longer break between the days) and tried to imagine how long that 9000 piece puzzle would take for me. I would like to do that like you did as a real 9000 piece puzzle. That picture is abviously harder than the picture in my 5000 piece puzzle and the last dark section looked really hard. But I dont like the other 9000 piece puzzle's pictures except one but it is too similar to the 5000 piece puzzle's picture. So after all I will do a bigger puzzle some day but I am just thinking should I start working on it now or in the summer vacation or would the vacation be even long enough for the puzzle.
Also the space was a problem even with the 5000 piece puzzle when I had to change the working location often and wasnt able to build it straight to the board 'cause the board didnt fit through my room's door. So it could make the way longer but the lost time would be able to replace only with couple extra hours. Probably still I will do that puzzle in the future in same point.
The framing of the 5000 piece puzzle was harder than I thought. If I built the 9000 piece puzzle, I would probably just keep it as solved and frame it a lot later.

If you have the time and space I think the bigger puzzles are a lot of fun. 9000 was a lot of pieces and there were a few sections that were really hard, but overall I enjoyed having project with my free time over a six month period. Good luck with your next one!

What is the best way to go about framing this monster?

I am impressed but puzzles seem to me like a fools errand. You make the puzzle, you admire your handiwork and then break it up. Can't you find a more productive way to spend your days? You obviously have patience and intelligence. Read some physics or learn to compose. It seems to me more worthy.

I respect your opinion and agree that people should be productive, but I'm also of the opinion that people can have fun hobbies without substance. Things like reading fiction, watching movies or following a sport can all be fun but aren't necessarily productive.

Not everyone just breaks up their puzzles after they are done. I actually tape a lot of my puzzles because I take pictures of most of them and I may want to display some of them at some time in the future. The ones I don't tape I either save to put together again, as they were challenging, or I give them away.
As far as puzzles being 'a fool's errand,' I do a puzzle every so often to let my mind decompress. I don't have to think too much about what I am doing, so my mind wanders over things I want to think about -- problems I might have, with people and other situations, for example.
