- An English grammar lesson to explain when we use the prepositions of place (in, on and at)
0:28 Using the preposition "at" to describe a specific point or place
2:07 The "at" preposition to define an exact address.
3:39 Using the "at" preposition of place for events and buildings
5:45 We can also use "at" when talking about somebody's house or a temporary stop during a journey.
7:33 Standard expressions that use "at" - For example at home, at school, at church etc.
9:00 We use the place preposition "on" for surfaces. Example we can say "Something is on the ceiling", on the table, on the floor etc.
10:30 Another use of "on" is when something is "attached" to something else, for example a ring is on a finger etc.
11:40 The "on" preposition can also be used for a town close to a river or the coast. We also use "on" for talking about places along a road.
13:32 Here is a list of expressions using the "on" preposition - Some examples are "on the farm", "on the left" etc
15:12 "in" is often used for enclosed places or places with a boundary. So we would say "in a forest" or "in a garden".
16:50 The most common use of the "in" preposition is for towns and cities.
17:58 There are some expressions with the "in" preposition like "in the newspaper", "in the sky" and many others.

.
-- It's a complete and instructive explanation.
-- When a person is a patient in a hospital, or he's an inmate in a prison we must use the preposition "in", but I think the right preposition when there's a visitor of the person that is in one of those buildings is "at" . Example: She was at hospital visiting her ill father.
Very useful lesson, Andrew. Excellent explanation! Thank you!

How to learn English ?
Tell me
Im going to have an nationel English test tomorrow (i live in sweden) and this video had helped me so much, thanks sir!!!
These are the best lessons on prepositions I have seen. Thanks !
You are great! You are the teacher who I was looking forward to. Thanks a lot!
We also use "at" when we talk about the time: at five o'clock, at half past six. Thank you very much!
Correct, but that would be another category; Prepositions of Time.
Bruh, the title is prepositions of place, you are describing a preposition of time.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH THE LESSON WAS PERFECT
Your videos are great. I love them! Thanks Andrew, you're good at explaining!

I hate you
This is an excellent video which explains the uses of the prepositions of place IN ON AT.
Hi, Andrew. Thank you for your lesson, it is really great and helpful. But now I don't know how to use correctly such expressions as IN the street and IN the tree or ON the street and ON the the tree because in all text books that I've read before there was a rule about preposition IN in these expressions. Who is right?
Such a wonderful lesson! It is very useful...
You know what, I have been taught to use "on" instead of "at" in a sentence such as - Jimmy lives on 46, M.G. Road. Now here, you correctly told me that I must say, "Jimmy lives at M.G.Road. Thanks Andrew.
+Jimmy Noronha You're welcome. Thank you for the comment and I'm sorry for the delay in replying to you. I have been on holiday.
Yes that's right, we only say "at" if we know the exact house number of the street. Example "Jimmy lives at 46 MG Road..."
If we only know the street, then we say "on" - "Jimmy lives *on* MG Road."
I'm glad the lesson helped you.
Best wishes,
Andrew

Hi Isabella and thanks for your comment! My advice is to learn the most common uses first ("in" for towns and cities, "on" for surfaces and "at" for buildings and events) and for the others, it just needs practice :)

HI Andrew,
How are you? I have a question, is it right to use 'at' instead 'in'
I m at hospital', instead I m in hospital, please do reply my comment,
You are simple awesome. May Allah(god) give you success.
Mehnaz
Mehnaz Hashmi use at if you are a visitor ,in if you are a patient
Mehnaz Hashmi The only one giving you success, is you.
Philipp Müller s
Mehnaz Hashmi I'm in the hospital. ( here you r not being specific about the hospital). if you mention the name of the hospital then you should use "at" I am at xyz (here you r being specific).
always remember where you are giving exact address use at. example I live at 289 xyz, gulf street.
Mehnaz Hashmi i'm in hospital (if you are a patient) im at the hospital (if you are a visitor)

Andrew
You sound polite and humble. Loved your lesson.
Just one observation: Also, we use IN for countries and States. Made in Brazil, Made in England; living in the state of New York, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, etc, right?
u2bMODERATOR Yes absolutely right. We treat states and countries the same as towns and cities. "I live in England" for example. :)
Andrew
Crown Academy of English Thank you, and blessings!
In this sentence, what is the correct preposition to use: I am _____ 5th Avenue.
Thanks!
Richard Liloc "I am on 5th Avenue" is the correct preposition. 5th Avenue is the name of a street in New York, but it is not an exact address. Therefore we use "on"
If it was an exact address, then we use "at" -- Example "The British Prime Minister lives AT 10 Downing Street, London."
thank you for your answer. what if, let us say an avenue that stretches to three cities. Do I still use on regardless of the length or boundaries? sorry for bothering you with this question and thank you again.
Richard Liloc Yes, it's the same. Example if you are driving in a car and you telephone somebody: "I'm on the M6 motorway between London and Manchester."
thank you very much. now it's clear.
jsmash99 No, "at the 5th Avenue" is wrong.
your teaching method is very good, everyone can easly catch it.
hey teacher, I really appreciate this lesson because you use the exact word to explain how to use prepositions. THANKS
