  • An English grammar lesson to explain when we use the prepositions of place (in, on and at)
    0:28 Using the preposition "at" to describe a specific point or place
    2:07 The "at" preposition to define an exact address.
    3:39 Using the "at" preposition of place for events and buildings
    5:45 We can also use "at" when talking about somebody's house or a temporary stop during a journey.
    7:33 Standard expressions that use "at" - For example at home, at school, at church etc.
    9:00 We use the place preposition "on" for surfaces. Example we can say "Something is on the ceiling", on the table, on the floor etc.
    10:30 Another use of "on" is when something is "attached" to something else, for example a ring is on a finger etc.
    11:40 The "on" preposition can also be used for a town close to a river or the coast. We also use "on" for talking about places along a road.
    13:32 Here is a list of expressions using the "on" preposition - Some examples are "on the farm", "on the left" etc
    15:12 "in" is often used for enclosed places or places with a boundary. So we would say "in a forest" or "in a garden".
    16:50 The most common use of the "in" preposition is for towns and cities.
    17:58 There are some expressions with the "in" preposition like "in the newspaper", "in the sky" and many others.

    .
    -- It's a complete and instructive explanation.
    -- When a person is a patient in a hospital, or he's an inmate in a prison we must use the preposition "in", but I think the right preposition when there's a visitor of the person that is in one of those buildings is "at" . Example: She was at hospital visiting her ill father.

    Hi, Andrew. Thank you for your lesson, it is really great and helpful. But now I don't know how to use correctly such expressions as IN the street and IN the tree or ON the street and ON the the tree because in all text books that I've read before there was a rule about preposition IN in these expressions. Who is right?

    You know what, I have been taught to use "on" instead of "at" in a sentence such as - Jimmy lives on 46, M.G. Road. Now here, you correctly told me that I must say, "Jimmy lives at M.G.Road. Thanks Andrew.

      +Jimmy Noronha You're welcome. Thank you for the comment and I'm sorry for the delay in replying to you. I have been on holiday.
      Yes that's right, we only say "at" if we know the exact house number of the street. Example "Jimmy lives at 46 MG Road..."
      If we only know the street, then we say "on" - "Jimmy lives *on* MG Road."
      I'm glad the lesson helped you.

    In this sentence, what is the correct preposition to use: I am _____ 5th Avenue.
    Thanks!

    • @CrownAcademyEnglish
      @CrownAcademyEnglish  10 лет назад

      Richard Liloc "I am on 5th Avenue" is the correct preposition. 5th Avenue is the name of a street in New York, but it is not an exact address. Therefore we use "on"
      If it was an exact address, then we use "at" -- Example "The British Prime Minister lives AT 10 Downing Street, London."

    • @RichardLiloc
      @RichardLiloc 10 лет назад

      thank you for your answer. what if, let us say an avenue that stretches to three cities. Do I still use on regardless of the length or boundaries? sorry for bothering you with this question and thank you again.
