    does the acid do somthing to the hide or is it just to lower the ph? could i use phosphonic acid used for ph down in gardening?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! Yes. The acid helps remove the non tannable proteins from the skin and also plumps it up making it easier to flesh. I don’t no anything about the type of acid used for gardening so I can’t answer that question.

    Enjoying the videos! Can you throw multiple hides in the pickle? Or is it standard to do one at a time? Thanks! Keep em coming!

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! Yes you can pickle multiple hides all together as long as you have enough room in your container so they can spread out and not be folded over on each other for long periods of time. You can stir them around every day when you check your PH level. This will help the acid solution penetrate the hides for a more even pickle. I usually pickle about four deer hides at a time using around 30 gal of solution.

    The vids are very helpful and informative! Im getting into taxidermy this year myself, what kind of animal do you suggest to start on?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +2

      Hey thanks for watching! I would start out with what type of game that you have available to practice with. Asking family and friends to let you practice on there deer, coyotes, etc. is a good way to get started. With that being said I would start out with shoulder mount whitetail deer. There hides are pretty easy to work with and the materials are not to expensive. Go to some of the taxidermy supply companies and get one of there taxidermy manuals it will get you started in the right direction. Make sure you hit the notification button so you will know when I have new content available on the channel.

    sorry about all the questions im doing my first deer head when it comes to clay is there a certin type to use i hear peaple say use one kind for eyes and another for ears im in canada theres craft stores that sell clay but theres all diffrent kinds i hear critterclay alot but id have to order from usa and shipping is crazy thanks

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Yes I use critter clay for my eye work and marblex air dry clay for the ears, feet and toes (life size)mounts. You should be able to find it at the hobby stores.If you can’t get critter clay you can use the marblex for eye work. It will shrink some but not enough that it will effect the shape of the eye.

    great info how long do you leave the hide salted before putting it in the pickle?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! I will salt the hide and leave overnight and the next day shake off all the old salt and reapply new salt and leave overnight. Then I will put it in the pickle the next day. So I will have it salted for two days before adding it to the pickle.

    How many hides or capes can I pickle per solution, or is that solution per one hide? Or if I have two is it sufficient?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  Год назад

      Hey thanks for watching! I will use five gallons of solution per deer cape. For example if I am pickling four hides I will make twenty gallons. I will leave them in the mix for two days, checking the ph each day. After the second day I will remove the hides drain and flesh and then return them to the pickle for one final day before I neutralize and tan.

    After this hide dries does the hide become very stiff? If so how do you loosen it up to make it flexible to go on the form? Thanks!

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      I use a wet tan so the hide will be very flexible allowing you to get it on the form and taxi the skin around for a few days. After the mount dries it will stiffen up. If thinned and tanned correctly there should be very little shrinkage.

  • @jonathanalley2559
    @jonathanalley2559 2 года назад +1

    After my second salt my cape was still movable but was a litte stiffer than your cape looked! Once I put it In my pickle solution it seemed to relax a little! Also the cape was floating didn’t have any milk jugs so I used a five gallon bucket and added some weight to it! Do you thing that will be fine ?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад

      That will work. Now just keep the ph checked for the next two days.some hides want dry out as much as others it just depends on the temperature and humidity. The pickle will take care of it.

    What is the best method to thin the hide without a fleshing machine?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! There are a couple of different things you can do to thin the hide. 1. Use a large knife and a fleshing beam. 2. Use an actual fleshing knife and a fleshing beam. 3 you can get a mini flesher from a taxidermy supply company. It is a small handheld air powered flesher. I am in the process of producing a video covering some of these techniques so make sure you hit the notification button so you will know when I have this up on the channel.

    the three times you return the hide to the pickle do you keep the original solution you started with or do you make a new batch every time?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад

      I will use the same solution for the batch of hides I am going to pickle.(usually 2-4 hides) making sure to keep the PH between 1-2. I try to keep my PH mix at 1.5 for each day I check it. If the PH starts to rise you can add more acid to lower it just make sure to remove the hides before adding the acid and mixing.

    Do you not flesh before pickling?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад

      Hey thanks for watching! You need to remove any large pieces of meat and fat from the hide before the salting process. Then you will add the hide to the pickle. The purpose of the pickle is to remove blood and proteins from the skin and plump the skin up so it is easier to flesh.

    Do you add more acid to reduced ph it gets too high?

    • @ClearCreekTaxidermy
      @ClearCreekTaxidermy  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! Yes to lower the ph you will need to add more acid. It only takes a small amount of acid if your ph is not to much out of range. I generally mix the same amount of water for the hides that I work on. After you make a batch a couple of times you can just about get the ph right on the money. I always try to keep the ph at 1.5
