You can see how talented they were already back then. Hard to believe they have only gotten better. Tim Foust is a true bass who sounds natural going low. It does not look like it takes any effort. And Adam Rupp's beatboxing is stellar as always. And love how humble the guys are & supportive of each other. No divas in this group.

Home Free has been around since 2000. But they hit it big after winning Season 4 (2013) of The Sing-off, which this vid is from. Each week, they only had a short time to pick a song, arrange and practice it. Here, they chose a well-known Johnny Cash song and gave it a new spin.
Voiceplay competed on The Sing-Off that same season, and finished 5th or 6th. The two groups have always been friends. Tim Foust, the Home Free bass, taught Geoff Castellucci a lot of his singing-low techniques. The last note Tim hits in this vid is an F#1.
Home Free's only personnel change since 2013 was that founder Chris Rupp left and was replaced at baritone by Adam Chance.

I enjoyed your reaction. Thank you for the sub-titles. It was very easy to follow you as you switched between Finnish and English. For me, nothing was lost there. I will point out that while this group had been locally touring for a while, they were still very early in this formation, and were still very early in their transition to a Country style, having been more pop/rock oriented before this.

Lol, listening to you reminds me of talking to my maternal grandmother when she got older. She came to the US during WW1. She would slip into German at times, which didn't bother me much (I studied it in college, because of her), but she would also slip into northern France (French) and whatever other culture was current at the time. She was the sweetest person I have ever met. Genetically I am mostly western/northern European, but I am forever fascinated by the northern European that is the other bulk of my ancestry. By the way, I am a Mutt. Have a little bit of everything. Peace, Love!

Yay! Love your videos and I am so happy you are getting into this song! I kinda prefer the version feat. Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix though. Austin (the beautiful bright tenor) has a fantastic little tiny hook at the start of his first verse, Tim (the bass) is just sublime like always but has even better vocal lines and delivery, and Avi brings a level of smoothness that fills the song arrangement so well. Do check it out if the mood strikes you.

Welcome back Anna! It was interesting to hear how you pronounce your surname, because you pronounce it exactly the way I imagined it. As I told you I don't speak Finnish, but when I was in Finland I noticed that Finns very often speak the same way as they write. I don't know if that's always the case, but it's very obvious to me because that's exactly how it is in my native Polish. It seems very natural to me and much simpler, much more so than for example in English where we speak differently than we write.
And by the way - on each of your films it is impossible not to notice how beautiful woman you are! But when I saw you today in your hat and shirt, I can only say one thing - wow! And repeat - wow, wow, wow! Warm greetings to you from Poland, beautiful Anna! Anna, suggestions here are spot on. Other Home Free suggestions would be Helplessly Hoping, a cover of a Crosby (no relation) Stills and Nash song. Also Working for a Living is fun and introduces the current members. Some of their more recent videos include live performances but there are a bunch of phone recorded videos of them live (along with some of the between song antics). The beat boxer (vocal percussionist) also has a solo at their concerts that have been recorded (there is one that gets most of the views but it is a few years old and his newer ones show his growth from amazing to unreal).
As for other "extreme" vocals, both Tim Foust (HF's bass) and Geoff Castelucci (the bass from Voiceplay) have solo works that are amazing. The subharmonics Geoff pulls off are stunning and, I believe, are related to the growls Tatiana from Jinjer does. I'd also suggest looking into Slaughter to Prevail (Demolisher is a good intro) and their lead vocalist Alex Terrible. He covers a bunch of songs with his extreme vocals as well (Like Astronaut in the Ocean).
Love your breakdowns AND they make me feel like I'm keeping my mind sharp since I have to read

Voice Play, Voctave and Home Free. Now you have to try Pentatonix. I'd recommend their "Hallelujah" or "Daft Punk" medley. I personally like the "Daft Punk" medley and the story that goes with it. Filmed in a members apartment/flat, they spend $500.00 on it and it wins them they're first Grammy award.

Mahtavaa ja tarkkakorvaista kommentointia, kuten niin monesti ennenkin. Keep up the good work! Tästä tuli heti mieleeni kolme asiaa joihin olisi mukavaa nähdä reaktiosi ja analyysisi:
    1. Tämän samaisen pumpun basistin Tim Foust Vocal Range -video on jännää nähtävää (ja tietysti kuultavaa)
    2. Beatboxerista assosioin heti monitaituri D-low, tsekkaa Winner's compilation SBX Kickback battle 2021 (hämmentävää minkälaisia ääniä ihminen pystyy tuottamaan)
    3. Brian Justin Crumin ameriikan talentissa vetäisemä versio Radioheadin biisistä Creep (en oikeastaan tiedä miten tämä Home Freestä mieleen tuli mutta ei kahta ilman kolmatta)

Hello Anna. Great reaction. I have watched many videos of Home Free but must admit that I have not seen this one until now. I do not feel that it is their best. I hope that you react to this group some more. Man of Constant Sorrow, Mayday, Folsom Prison Blues and many others are more representative if their singing ability. Adam Rupp is the beat boxer and there is a youtube video of him from 2015 doing a drum solo (no drums) that is pretty amazing.

I agree with your overall comments. I think nerves definitely played a part in the pitch issues. This was when the group was still really young/new. There is more beauty in their more recent performances/videos and a depth of growth that puts them above their peers in my eyes. An intersting connection for you, as you are familiar with Voctave. Many of tge Voctave performers are from Voices of Liberty at Disney. Austin Brown, the tenor soloist from this performance, also used to sing with many of the Voctave group as part of Voices of Liberty. Please look into more Home Free.

I would LOVE to hear your views on a very controversial a cappella group: the Nylons. They formed in Toronto in 1978, and immediately caused an uproar due to their decision to use a drum machine as a studio backing track. Yet their choice opened the door to the idea of a cappella groups incorporating beatboxers, as a way to give songs more rhythmic drive. I don't know Adam Rupp of Home Free could have existed had not the Nylons pioneered the thought that a cappella needed a beat.
The lineup in their _floreat_ period of the 1980s were Marc Connors and Claude Morrison (tenors), Paul Cooper (baritone) and Arnold Robinson (bass). This ended in 1990 when Cooper decided to come off the road; then in 1991 Connors died of AIDS. The group continues to the present day with Morrison the only remaining (and living) original member, but I have never felt they bested their 1980s work. Following are a list of tracks from that period.

Suosittelen lämpimästi tutustumaan enemmänkin heihin - vaikka tekevät kantrityylillä paljon covereita niin hallitsevat myös muutkin tyylit. Löytyy upeita ihon kananlihalle saavia balladeja (esim. Brothers in Arms) ja kieliposkella tehtyjä todella hauskoja videoita (The Butts Remix, All about that Bass yms.), jotka musiikillisesti ovat viimisen päälle mutta saavat katselijan nauramaan - ja paljon paljon muita upeita kappaleita. Toivottavasti tutustut Home Freehen lisää, et tule pettymään:)
