Fantastic video guys!! I met Larry this August at Andy Myers Lodge on Eagle lake when he presented about his adventures tracking the radio tagged muskies. This guy knows more about muskies than all the musky "experts" put together. And, what a nice guy!! He is willing to share any and all of his wisdom that it has taken him a lifetime to amass to anyone willing to listen. Keep casting Larry, you are truly a legend. Keep these videos coming Robbie and Lee. Great start to this series!
One of my favorite episodes! I love the stories, love the history brings me back to talking with my grandpa who like homer was one of the real St. Clair OGs. Keep doing these, keep Larry's and all the legends that are with us alive.
im very glad he mentioned my home waters the Ottawa river, an amazing muskie fishery with some high pressure spots but most of it is barelly fished. if anyones interested in fishing the Ottawa for potential 50+ inchers contact *Mark Thorpe in Quebec or John Anderson of the Ottawa River Muskie Factory*
BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST VIDEOS YOU'VE EVER MADE!!! I have so many things to say and ask about this video but I don't want to flood the comments section. Although I Want to! Awesome job guys!
Rarely do I listen to someone talk for along time but I was all ears and even rewinded to make sure I got some facts straight. I can kinda respect the one guy trying to do it to help the area but definitely like to know the truth. I could've give it two thumbs up so I gave it two comments.
Thanks for that. I was zoned in and didn’t even realize how long this video was. Very interesting and educational. We must protect our natural environment for the future of the planet and our outdoor sports.
Thanks allot Lee and Robby for bringing Larry on...what wealth of knowledge, even in this fifty minuet video, I (we all) learned a ton! Larry, non of your time spent on muskies was ever a waste of time, you've passed your torch on to those of of us who have a great appreciation for catch and release fishing and preserving Musky everywhere. Thanks so much!! Let'em get big out there guys!!
Larry! I love this man. He's stayed at my house a couple of times, and we've spent hours and hours and hours and hours talking about these old record fish. And I've bored him half to death with all kinds of mathematical calculations...and even wrote some software to estimate musky weight, with his help. Simply put, there is not one person on this planet who has expended as much effort as Larry Ramsell has, in pursuit of Esox masquinongy. The man is a legend. Period.
I saw this video and spoke with the person who weighed Ken O'Brian's Moon river fish in 1988. I told him what Larry had said and he laughed in my face. I know the feeling of fishing for musky for 50yrs without a confirmed 50 pounder. I think Larry is simply jellous.
One of the finest segments on Muskie fishing I have seen since RUclips started. Great idea guys and well done! My fishing gang began catch and release with the advent of the VHS video camera, many fish we do not even take out of the water any more particularly big fish. The measurement is just a number. Who cares. We are really there for the experience on the water with great friends while chasing the iconic fish. (have both volumes Larry's books and so glad for what he has done for Muskie fishing)
I had planned to watch this video in a few segments but once I started watching it, I quickly became fully enamored by the discussions at hand and can honestly say like many others in the comments that this 50 min video goes by in what seems like 15-20mins and I enjoyed every minute of it.
So happy I watched this video...I have struggled to convince people of my big fish, but Larry's formula for fish 50 lbs and above comes out to the same weight calculated by 2 other methods. 52"x28" and around 49.5 to just over 50 lbs. Thank you for this video...I just ordered Larry's volume 2 book...looking forward to reading it.
I watch all your videos and this was one of the coolest ones yet. There's so much to learn from the old timers. Might not have been the most action packed but definitely one of the most interesting.
That was great! Really enjoyed listening to him. When I got into Musky fishing years ago I read a lot of articles on those big fish and people saying they were fake. Please do more of these with Larry. Take advantage of his knowledge now. We aren't around for ever.
great vid. curious about those fast growing spotted muskies though, they are stocked, but what strain are they that they grow so fast? leech lake strain?
I love your content and will continue to support this channel as long as you keep on fishing.... Don't change a thing, you guys work great together as a team and are soooo relatable. Your audience is gonna keep growing for years! 👍
Great video. So glad you guys are finally doing this segment. My girlfriend and I were just talking a week or two ago while watching your videos that you should get some of the old legends and hall of famers on the show and fish with them. Such a wealth of knowledge. LOL I guess we are on the same wave length. Cant wait to see who ya's have lined up next.
So cool to learn from a legend. Loved this episode and watched/listened to it intently. The tracking portion was highly interesting. I wish you would've got him to expand on Wisconsin inland trophy waters. I expect Round, Grindstone, and LCO to be a part of that conversation.
I used to fish big Sissabagama in Stone lake Wi. 10 miles from Hayward. This really brings back good memories. Thanks y’all! Texas bass is what I do now.
I caught and released a big red drum between 57-63 in Charleston SC around 2008, state record size or bigger and most the people I tell don't want to believe it, it even angers some that I've caught such a Giant and they haven't. The red drum is our trophy fish. People around here don't even lie about fish that big. It's like the equivalent of a 60 inch musky. Some of the formulas are surprisingly accurate. I love a good fish tail. We need people like Larry Ramsell. Much respect . Excellent video.
@@ManicMindTrick it got hung up in some structure at one point so I thought it was a stingray that sucked to the bottom for a minute and tried to break it off and it came out with some scrapes on its head. At that point i had locked down drag and had been going super hard on it to get it loose and kind of stunned it pulling it in to the concrete structure. A fight for sure but not its best.
I have no idea how much it weighed and it was released but in 1993 on Trout Lake I caught a 54.25in musky. I was 17yrs old in High School in Minocqua. We fished all the time for em back then and caught some damn big fish.
58lbs is insane. Filled my sturgeon tag in September, sturgeon weighed at just under 51lbs by the DNR. Was 61" long. Just imagining a muskie that heavy is crazy.
Lol way to personalize this and try and make this about yourself and your own catch. Completely different type of fish & really for no reason at all? Weirdo.
@@bc5208 what? I was using my recently harvested sturgeon as reference because I was shocked how big this musky was....I was giving props to the angler and his big musky. Heck it wasn't even my biggest sturgeon....I'm surprised you got offended 😂
Hopefully the MN DNR sees this and realizes that people care about the lakes and want to see them flourish like they used to. At this point they are letting the lakes die.
@@brentknutson608it's too bad that they can't allocate some of the billions in tax revenue we already pay. But that all has to go to help other people who don't feel like working.
They didnt mention how Ken's fish from 1988 (the Canadian record) was caught with a tiny rapala countdown crankbait while targeting musky for his first time. Also didnt mention the fish caught while electro fishing by the ministry on mille lacs lake 4months ago.
Yep, like you learned here, a 18year old fish weighing that much because it was sterile, just think there could be one 40yrs. Old double that in size, remember a fish continues to grow almost to any size if conditions are correct, I bet the new world record will be a sterile fish, probably big enough to bite your head off.
Great timely video, was reading last week how sometime back Pete Maina got ostracized for disputing the records, my son and I love your videos, heading up in two weeks to try for the next record, keep it up
There is a story in the Western UP of Michigan that tells of a Musky weighing 100 lbs caught in a gill net in Lake Superior in 1899. Supposedly a photo of the fish hung in a Ranger Office for about 10 years before the building burned down.
Did a question about art bearfoot 59 pound 11 oz French river musky come up, seen the mount huge body but small head now you got me thinking about from the interview.
Hay Lee do you possibly remember the story printed in musky hunter magazine like 25yrs ago about 2 fish called big mary and little mary?? Eagle lake? That's what pretty much started it for me. Great video!!!
Great show!! I've fished Eagle as a kid ,I had a walleye on and it got hit and killed (walleye) but you could see how wide of bite it had , no record but nice one .30 in limit at the time ,the second they hit 30 in they were killed if caught, I didnt like that because the mount in the lodge was as long as an oar. A couple years ago I went to Vermilion and I knew it was stocked with leech lake spotted but the one I caught was barred and the old lodge mount was barred, it could have been stocked ,My catch didn't get measured but it was about 46-47in , put up a heck of a fight , it wasn't a 50 but it was sure a pretty fish , not a mark on it. I noticed something there you discussed, people would pound the shallows by islands or shore but I marked a few big fish in 20-24 ft in main body where I also marked lots of cisco? suspended in cloudsof them bottom had millions of baby perch some of these may have been bigger but didn't catch any of size just wanted to see what they wereBut that was a great show , I wish there were more of these type.

I had heard just recently that Ontario has started restocking Lake Simcoe with 20 000 musky to re-establish the population there. It was once a decent musky lake, and I guess they wanted to bring back the fishery in there.
Based on his formula for weight my largest and only Muskie is 51.13lbs out of a 73 acre private lake that my dad owns it was 54.75”x27”. This was last year and I have not caught a musky since.

I would think that somewhere there probably is a musky that’s over 70 lbs and over 65 inches especially in waters that have no pressure from anglers
There was a 61.5" pulled out of mille lacs this year by the dnr doing walley counts
Just search dnr pulls out muskie on mille lacs and u can find the article
Heard about it too. Al
Mille Lacs, St Lawrence, Eagle, Vermillion and great lakes areas probably all have one of that class.
