- We're not firing up our wood boiler this year, we did a cost comparison and decided to use oil.

Another nice score on some wood 👍 hopefully fuel oil will get even cheaper after Nov 5th 🤞🏻
Cya at Bunyan !
As long as it keeps coming in we’re happy. Hopefully a lot of things become cheaper after the election! See you soon!
🤘I picked up a tree very similar to that from a city yard and is smelled just like a horse barn too! The folks in my channel seemed to think it was Siberian Elm. Split great though
It did split nice just like oak . We’re thinking it’s red elm .
I nvr thought ide hear a firewoodman , say fuel oil is cheaper than wood .
Crazy isn’t it? lol go figure!
I know the wood boiler is different but there is nothing quite like a wood stove in the house. Coffee by the fire is one of my simple pleasures. My season ends Monday.......
Yeah the wood boiler isn’t much different than using oil. Love the heat from a wood stove, you can’t beat it. Hope you had a good season, enjoy your coffee by the wood stove!
Sure looks like red elm to me some splits good like that and some doesnt
Good to know Shawn, we’re definitely determined to find out what it is
I really never thought about the difference in fuel price compared to firewood. That makes complete sense to me.
Your work flow is really taking shape. See you all soon.
Thanks Jerry, using oil does make sense this year. The setup is working out great for us. Looking forward to seeing you at Bunyan!
Could it be Osage Orange. Live in MA, I have never split it. Chris in the woodyard talks about it (Wisconsin) My understanding is that it can grow everywhere.
@@lawrencehp1 We believe we figured it out. We’re perdy sure it’s red elm
If you sell $450 worth of wood you need to pay income tax on the $450. When you buy your heating oil for $300 that is with after tax dollars. The gap is a lot closer than $150. I don't think I would ever just circulate my boiler.
Well with the new tractor truck trailer and saw it’s going to be a few yrs before we see a profit and pay income tax on any actual profit . I can still go either way and if the ports go on strike and oil jumps I will just bring 12 cord home and fire it up . I always like to keep my options open cause ya never know what’s gona happen.
No boiler this year. Well, thays ok. I will burn wood pellets again.
Gramps at Willie's Firewood is definitely a worker, along with Kevin. As for Russ, goes well. Maybe if he stopped holding the camera, he could work just as hard.😂😂
A lot of people around here burn the pellets . If oil jumps up we can always fire up the boiler . Thanks Danial
That wood looks like chestnut oak, but red elm is a little stringy, wood dealers always burn wood even if oil is free! Wood a renewable source! Burning fuel oil for heat, shame on you, hope you get to feeling better Karen . Take care guys. Keep the sawdust flying from Alaska Wood Yard.
Just makes sense this year Jeff. We’re thinking it’s some type of elm
Those things are wood hogs. You can heat three homes with 12 cord of wood with a woodstove. …Nice to keep the mess outside, but they’re very costly to run. The Masshole is just sayin! 👍
Lol, you’re probably right
so , your telling us you have a wood splitting machine, but no wood for the home boiler,,,,,,and your telling us you have a sawmill but no timber to build a little shed for your home boiler wood. !!!!! would you like to come to my seminars about putting ourselves first, and feelng ok about it ? just asking . lets all have a week or 2 where we stay home but put only us first and raspberry to the rest of the world ,,,just for a little bit .
@@adammz08 Yup you definitely got me figured out lol . There’s probably a 100 other things you could add to that list and that’s without Karen adding her additions . When I have free time on my hands I tend to just add more on to my plate . Not sure if I need a seminar or just my head examined. Probably both .
Last year I burned 80 percent chunks. This year I don’t have that many dry. I got about 7 years worth of wood right now. Up to 17 cord this year. My price high for my area so I sure have wood burn every winter. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Dan I will burn the dry chunks we have in the shop . We charge about $50 more pr cord than most everyone in our area but we still never have enuf dry wood to sell .
Is there any particular reason why you split your boiler wood in flat pieces. They look like shingles to me. You can lock Phil in a padded cell with a stainless steel ball bearing and he would break it or lose it. Dead elm, with the bark off, is one of my favorite woods to burn. It is hard to split. Green elm sucks all the time and never seems to burn well.
We did that because it’s red oak and takes forever to dry . Our gasifier wood boiler likes bone dry wood so by splitting it thin it drys faster and should be ready for next yr . We kept it wide so it will still fit through the door . Most of the splits are 1-2 inches thick by 12-18 inches wide . I’d say each piece is about equal to a 5 by 6 chunk and a chunk of red oak like that would take 2-3 yrs to dry around here but by making it thin it drys so much faster . Even when we’re doing regular firewood we try and split red oak into 2 by 4 pieces so that we can sell it the next yr . The faster it drys the sooner we can sell it .
I have old farm house and I got a large boiler and we go through about 15 cord of a winter easy. I have oil heat as back up. Paying the oil man isn’t an option. Keep up the great work
We’re heating 2 places but with oil at $3 I belive I can sell the wood and buy oil and still put a fair amount of $ in my pocket .
Gramps is a MACHINE 👍👍
He sure is. Puts me to shame!
Hope Ms. Karen gets better soon!! Y'all have fun at the fair and Bunyan!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks David, I’m feeling much better now. Take care
Good job you should get your machine fixed tell Karen get well She got a lot of wood To split Ha ha Have a good day stay safe my friend and we'll see you again
Haha, thanks Frank. Yup no time to be sick around here! Take care
I don't know what that is but it looks pretty the next time if you're doing a video and you split any of that have a bottle of water handy to run it on I'd love to see what it looks like with a finish I hope you feel better soon Karen stay safe and see you next time
We’ll do that Dale! I’m feeling much better, thank you
I would say red elm. I just split some elm that was not bad to split after it was just cut down. If it starts to dry out it's a bugger to split.
Everyone that’s seen it in person agrees it’s some type of elm but it’s definitely not antic here in Maine
Karen, I hope you feel better. Look forward to seeing you at Bunyan. This will be my first. No idea what type of wood that is.
Thanks Jeff, feeling a lot better now. I passed it on to Phil 😂 we’re hoping to find out what type of wood that is. Looking forward to seeing you at Bunyan!
Hello Guys, we have a 45’ shipping container filled with Shavers firewood bags, just bring them to the boiler as needed👍🇺🇸
Aj gave us a few bags to try out when we were at boonvile . Definitely looking forward to doing a video and seeing how they compare to our pallets as far as drying . Our wood yard is 20 min away from our house and we only have 1 tractor so bags are not an option at our house . We’ve always just brought a trailer full home and stacked onto the pallets out of the dump trailer then once they were all full I would bring the tractor home and move them into place .
Hope ya feel better Karen ! Nice work Guy’s 🔥🪵👍👏🇺🇸 Rick
Thanks Rick, feeling much better now!
Is it mahogany
We don’t know, but we’re on a mission to find out. Not too often we come across wood we can’t identify
Who makes that piece of equipment that feeds you the rounds?
Carta Equipment makes it. They’ve offered $500 off the purchase price for anyone who mentions Allen Family Firewood. That’s one piece of equipment we wouldn’t want to be without. Sure saves on the heavy lifting!
Phil I think a plane ticket to Hawaii would perk Karen right up 🤟aloha😅 we cut a tree like that and was told it as Chinese elm. But that was many yrs ago and I’m senile like frickinjeep 🪵?
I like the way you think Bob! lol We’re gonna figure out what it is, had an arborist look at it too. We’ll let everyone know when we know…as long as we remember! 😂
@@AllenFamilyFirewoodI think I like the way you think I think 🤔
😂
Karen I hope you get well soon. Nice video y'all
She’s doing a lot better but she gave it to me .
We hope you feel better Karen! We've all had colds for the week. No idea what that wood is. I'm thinking your piston seal is shot or the the piston is loose on the rod. Hopefully you get it figured out soon.
Danas thinking it’s in the piston but he wants to test the pressures first to make sure it’s not the pump . Karen’s perdy much got rid of what she had but now it’s kicking in with me .
@AllenFamilyFirewood I'm thinking it's the cylinder because of how it's acting and because of how fast that thing settles when you shut it off. Well feel better Phil!
If you don't like to stack or sale Elm use it for your Boiler
We still don’t know what it is but in the video we split some and it split real nice and clean . Definitely not like any elm I’ve had before that stuff is twisted and stringy.
Good video as always and feel better soon Karen❤️
Thanks Sue, I feel much better now! ❤️
Slippery Elm? Seems to fit the bill. Phil, do ya think oil will deliver the heat output that a wood boiling could?
The first 2 yrs we lived here all we had was oil fired boiler and it kept both places nice an warm and did the hot water . Really didn’t notice any difference with the outdoor wood boiler but when we put that in oil was $5 gallon . We still have plenty of dry wood so I can still go either way but we never have enuf dry wood to sell and I keep going up on the price pr cord . I just figured at $450 pr cord I’m better off selling the wood and buying oil . I definitely think that wood is some type of elm because of the bark but I’ve never seen elm split nice like that or be red like that and it definitely don’t smell like elm . I’ve got a few other local guys that are going to take a look at it and see what they say .
@@AllenFamilyFirewood 10 4, be interesting to see what they say.
Hey that’s a nice shirt! We will be burning more oil at my place this year as well for the same reason. I think everyone need a Gramp. I know I appreciate what he does so much for sure.
Nice to see him in a clean shirt! 😂 Yes, the oil makes sense this year. I’m sure you really appreciate Gramps, he’s priceless! Sure wish we could borrow him lol
🤘It’s inspiring isn’t it? My FIL is 79 and still cutting his own wood off his property plus a full truck load he buys in. Hope to stay healthy to be doing that!
@@Mainelywork me too. He motivates me to do better everyday.
Great video, question when you said the amount of cords of wood you burn to heat your home did you mean full or face cords and if it is full do you heat a large square footage?
We are heating 2 places with one boiler . Our house is 2800 sq ft and our rental is 1200 sq ft plus it does the hot water for both places . Yes 12-13 full cords of wood
@@AllenFamilyFirewood Thank you as a heating contractor for more years than I care to count I have run into several situations where a outdoor boiler was installed to heat a much smaller square footage than yours and because of the installer not quit understanding heat transfer the amount of wood they were going through a season was unreal. Thank you!
It good that it was a quick fix on the spitter
Well it was yesterday Larry, but now it’s acting up again and worse than before. We have a call into the doctor!
Why did you split the wood so small for a boiler?
It’s red oak and I need it bone dry for next yr because our boiler is a gasifier. We split it wide but we split it 1-2 inches thick so that it will dry in that time frame . Huge chunks 6 in by 6 in will take a few yrs to be bone dry up here in Maine and them new gasifier boilers require bone dry wood .
No wood? I would burn the furniture 😂
lol. We have the wood, it’s just more cost effective to use oil this year
1 gallon here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 is 5.68 .. after exchange is 4.20 USD
We’d be burning wood if it was that much!
@@AllenFamilyFirewood it's getting a bit ridiculous here..
Them boilers sure do eat a lot of wood!👍👍
They sure do!
Karen needs rest & chicken soup
Karen did take a few days off and is coming back into it . Today she was back and ran about a half cord through the axis . She likes cabbage soup when she’s sick and got plenty of that the last few days .
Hello Phil and Karen. Now that Karen is a double job employee (Stacking & Splitting) you can’t afford to let her have too much down time. That could cause a major disruption in the wood processing yard. All joking aside Karen, get well soon.
That Green Monster still amazes me. That is still one of the best investments in the wood yard. It doesn’t look like it ever gets over loaded to where it can’t move the large loads of wood you dump in it.
Thanks for another good video.
I’ve been loading it with some 20-30 in red oak rounds and really had it rounded up a few times and it moves it with ease . It’s so nice not having to handle and fight them big rounds , now with the pull of a lever they just come to the splitter . Karen was feeling better today and probably put a half cord a boiler wood threw the axis . Few more days an she will be back 100% she’s a tough one .
When you 2 are driving buy stop in. Built a dual purpose wood shelter and use it as a table shelter next to the fire pit In the summer. Simple, attractive and blends in. The heating souce/cooling for our home is a ground source GEOTHERMAL via a horizontal slinky loop system, to my knowledge, first one in Maine. 300 to 400% more efficient than the common well system. Falmouth Lion's did well this season, sold out 2 months ago.
Been a while since we were down that way but next time we go ck that stand we will try a stop . Sounds interesting . Good to see you guys sold out again this yr . We have our first dry hardwood order going out in the morning it’s definitely getting to be delivery season I wish I had a few 100 cord all dried .
😅 it looks to me like it's butternut
We still don’t know but hoping to find out soon
Burning oil instead of wood...Whooda' thunk it? Hope ya' feel better soon Karen! Wow Phil, them's some magic fingers ya' got there, lol.
I know, right? lol. I’m feeling much better, thank you. Even split wood today. Unfortunately Phil is still at the woodyard with the doctor because Buster is sick again
I miss our wood stove, but I don’t blame you
Just makes sense this year
I think it’s black locust
We still don’t know what it is but hopefully we’ll find out soon
could be coffee wood it is like oak
We still don’t know but hope to find out soon
I feel your pain Karen, when the grandkids catch something at school and bring it home to us- hits hard, haven’t been sick like that since we we kids !
Sure nice to have the Doc on speed dial to make woodyard calls, good buddy. What, no videos from the fair of some Hottie going-to-town on a tree swinging her axe? There are going to be a whole lot of your fans in India, Bangladesh and Timbuktu awfully disappointed ( along with a bunch of us here too)😂
Get well soon and you guys have fun at the fair
And that’s exactly what happened. But I’ll take on a cold any day in exchange for an overnight with one of our little princesses! Oh yeah, we sure are thankful for Dana! Obviously the video was exaggerated but not by much! Haha, there’s still a few days until the fair, we’ll see! We’re more interested to see how many people we know are there this year 😂😂. Take care Mike
Dang phil i thought ya was going to say you were coming down fishing.. just bought a 44 ft boat yesterday so will be able to really get some now. Get busy and get it done tho.. 2 cords a day for the next 50 days and youll have almost enough for next year.. snow will be coming early this year. And have to watch and see if the ports close in october for true fuel prices for this year. Oct 1st they are saying ports will go on strike down here in oil country. Stay safe yall.
I probably ought to keep some dry wood on hand if they shut things down and drive the oil price up . That’s quite the boat wow probably be able to just live right on a boat that big and be fishing all the time .
@@AllenFamilyFirewood kinda the idea of the boat. Stay safe yall.
Bring a tractor trailer to w ny. A cord of mixed hardwood is 225.
Wow that’s cheep . Tree length wood around here sells for $165 and a lot of guys cut and split it and resell it at $275 green in the summer months . I don’t know how they do it . We get our wood for free and I can’t afford to sell it that cheep .
@@AllenFamilyFirewood tri axle loads are 850 delivered and I’ve never got less than 23 face cords out a load. All good wood too.
Phil and Karen, always a pleasure watching your videos, may things still go well 😮😊❤get well Karen 👍
Thanks Todd, onward and upward! I’m feeling much better now, and split wood today.
One cord of wood is = to 175 gallons of oil. so you might want to rethink burning oil . let me know how you goys make out. . Love the show !
You might just be right I really don’t know I’m just going by what I was always told . Guess I should probably look it up and see how oak compares to oil . I can still go either way we have at least 50 cord on hand just in case .
Leave it to grandpa Phil to break buster again 😅 of course it happens when nanny Karen is sick!! Glad to see it was an easy fix for Dana!
Well I’d say he didn’t fix it cause I’m sitting here next to ole buster and it’s dead in the water again . Same issue as before I’d say it’s definitely a hydraulic issue .
i think its butternut👍
Once we find out for sure we will let everyone know . The bark tells me it’s elm but I’ve never seen elm red like that . I’ve never seen butternut either so it could be .
maybye mulberry, dense wood, good btu content, bottoms are hard and heavy but branches chip real easy. just a wierd tree i come across here in massachuseetss that sometimes stumps us when we cut it down so just a guess maybe?
The bark has that elm look to it but I’ve never had elm split nice like that or be red like that . I’ve never seen mulberry so I really don’t know .
Of course the oil burner relies on electricity to run. So the wood boiler also needs a circulating pump. Which means if the power goes out its not much help. How much difference if there in the amount of wood an outside boiler uses compared to a wood stove inside the house or basement?
We’re heating 2 places with the boiler a 1200 sq ft ranch and our home that’s 2800 sq ft . The ranch is a rental so it just made sence a few yrs back to put the wood boiler in instead of building 2 chimneys and buying 2 wood stoves for us . Now we have an option .
Looks like cherry
It wasn’t cherry but it does kind of look like it
Apple is red and so is cherry. The logs look too big to be either of them though. I think it is Oak that has been dead for a while.
We agree with you David on the Apple and Cherry. That’s a possibility that it’s oak that’s been dead for awhile. We’re going to keep trying to find out though
A guess could be iron wood just a guess I really don’t know
The few that had bark on them tell me it’s elm but I’ve never seen elm red like that or split that nice . Might just put one of them on the saw mill to see how it looks before I cut it all for firewood .
Walnut?
I know it’s not black walnut . Hopefully I will find out next week .
Thanks for another great video. Very entertaining!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching!
That was a great video. I’m gonna be burning a lot more oil this year after my operation and this year I won’t make it to Fryeburg fair because of that it would’ve been great to see you guys there but we have next year anyways I hope Karen feels better and again keep the videos coming love watching them Lee Hillsgrove trucking signing off 👍

Hi Karen and Phil!!😀😀
Good thing Dana was able to come over and help you out.
I'm surprised you weren't able to figure it out yourself.
How much wood did it cost you for the office call??
Take care my friends!!😀💚
Logger Al
Well it cost me half a cord of hard wood but he’s on his way over now cause it really stoped working this time . We did 3 cord today and it’s doing the same thing now only this time it has no power to go through the wood and it’s sticking on the return about half way up . My guess is it’s something in the piston
@@AllenFamilyFirewood kinda sounds like the packing took a poop.
Take the bottom hydraulic line loose and run it down and see if it blows oil out it. That will let you know if the oil is going past the packing.

With the grain on that wood I wonder if it would be a great saw log.
It seems like it would be. Stay tuned, maybe we’ll try it out on the mill in a future video
Hey Phil, I almost wonder if that’s locust
Any locus I’ve seen was greenish yellow with thick bark . This stuff has bark like elm and the wood is red . I might try a log on the sawmill to see how it looks before I cut it all into firewood .
