This episode should be mandatory for everyone striving to understand Chinese culture. Actually, Chinese seem to struggle a lot with this roundabout way of talking too, yet it is appropriate in some circumstances. In the end, it all comes down to what is expected and appropriate in a group of people, and in each group, there are subgroups and subgroups with different conventions. It's rather simplistic to distinguish between Chinese and Western cultures. There are big differences between North and South Chinese and there can also be major differences within a single province. Likewise, the difference between Americans, Germans and Italians is at least just as big as between North and South Chinese. We all know that theoretically, but you need to have lived in each of those countries to feel it. Interestingly enough, my North Chinese wife often used to tell me I should stop talking in such a roundabout way. Indeed, Germans also have a tendency of talking indirectly, but in different social situations. Nowadays, she doesn't say so anymore, probably because we've gotten used to each other and our ways after so many years. However, I still don't have a good reply when she tells me after a compliment: "So, you mean my clothes were not beautiful yesterday?!" 😅 Any ideas?

26:08 这个很有意思的事。Weber和别的德国人觉得有gemeinschaft vs gesellschaft的区别 （社区和社会？）。现代的城市和社会可以很疏远。你住在很大的城市，方太贵，你工作努力涨钱。你不见面很多朋友获知家人。另一方面如果你住在社区，村子，单位，等等。很多人认识你。有很多八卦。有不一样的生活和文化。
我觉大第一个情况有个人主义，第二个有集体主义。我觉得一部分的文化革命的想法就是停止城市化和因为城市化和资本主义有关系和这个个人社会结构。但是可能中国小村的社区和西方的小村不一样。我不知道。
其实我有一个问题。单位和小区有历史的关系吗？我想了解小区那个城市形态的历史一点。
