Be careful in life and you'll see The greedy live off you and me This is the code, we can't break history The greedy still fear you and me So get out of the way People have to work Not wallow in the dirt People have to work Oh, I bet that This is as good as it gets, yes How can you ask for more? If you're paid you're not poor This is as good as it gets, yes We've been bought, we've been sold But at least we're not old When red became blue Hope denied Our dreams swept away With the tide So get out of the way People want to work Not fester in the dirt We all want to work Oh, I bet that This is as good as it gets, yes How can you ask for more? If you're paid you're not poor This is as good as it gets, yes We've been bought, we've been sold But least we're not old Get out of the way People want to work Not fester in the dirt We all want to work Oh, I bet that This is as good as it gets, yes How can you ask for more? If you're paid you're not poor This is as good as it gets, yes We've been bought, we've been sold But least we're not old Can your heart take the cold?
Fair play to Martin for being able to see through Tony Bliar right from the start. If only Noel Gallagher could have as well. I was at university at the time and all the middle-class kids were celebrating Bliar getting elected even though it clearly meant that the Tories had taken over the Labour party and killed working class opposition. TBH, although this was a great song lyrically, it just didn't quite have the punch it should have had sound wise. This was their lead single from their make or break album really, and when I heard it I knew that Gene had already passed their peak.
could be a song about two people wanting to be together but denied of being busy with work. "When red became blue, hope denied Our dreams swept away with the tide." Amazing.
when he sings about britain turning blue, is that reference to a certain political party gaining control (conservatives? thatcher, blair, john major, etc?). I'm american so i don't know. Here, the Democratic party (Obama, Clinton) color is blue and the Republicans are red. Weird, considering the color of socialism is red.
From interviews around the time of its release, it was deemed an attack on New Labour for adopting elements of Thatcherism rather than reversing the changes Thatcher made to the UK economy and society sayitwithgarageflowers.com/2017/04/17/ive-always-enjoyed-revenge-martin-rossiter-february-1999/. Labour is conventionally associated with Red (socialism, social democracy) and the Conservatives Blue. New Labour won a landslide election in 1997.
Their proper farewell album this. Sad times as they lit my world from 1994-97, 3 years of bliss
Underrated band.Wonderful song.

Ironically, it had already got as good as it was going to get for Gene.

The Labour anthem at the time was 'things can only get better', this is a direct response
Amazing ❤❤
Martin's got a new album coming out, I bought an advance copy through Pledge Music, plus some nice tee shirts.
Great band , It's a shame they didn't last longer .
the music of my younger years
I think it's a reference to the conservatism of the new labour government in power when this song was released. It's a political song.

"When red became blue, hope denied
Our dreams swept away with the tide."
Amazing.
It's about wrongly valuing comfort over freedom.
Gene split up like nearly 10 years back? Lead singer has a new album out.
Tomorrow we will know 😍😍
Incredible at Boro arena '99 👍
