Of course Jim Nabors wasn't going to fire Frank Sutton 🙄 He was his real and true friend.
That friendship meant more to him than any old show. Yes! Jim Nabors was a nice guy 👍

Jim Nabors is awesome. I went to a taping of his variety show and had a great time. Frank Sutton was a perfect match for Jim Nabors. That chemistry they had is one of the main reasons Gomer Pyle was so successful. I can't believe they would want to fire Frank Sutton. Those TV days of the 60's and 70's were amazing. Nothing like it on TV now. Kudos to Jim for refusing to fire Frank Sutton.

Thanks Bob that good to know about Jim’s loyalty to Frank, however, I thought that a Sgt Carter sitcom would have worked. You are right about the networks running shows into the ground, that’s why their highest ranked ones have less viewers today than the bottom ranked shows of Nabors time even though we doubled our population.
    Have a great day!

Jim's variety show simply wasn't very good. TV watchers during this era were getting tired of variety shows, westerns, rural comedies, etc. We wanted cop shows and made-for-TV movies. ABC's Monday Night Football was starting up. As much as we loved them, we were tired of Jim Nabors, Andy Griffith, and others as well. Andy was a legend, but try watching an episode of "The Headmaster" without puking!

    • @richardmiller191

I think variety shows just ran their course. Would never work today. Things change so much so fast. Lot of old shows like that, you watch re-runs now and wonder why you ever thought they were funny. Comedy has changed so much.

So CBS canceled a successful show cause of one cast member? This smells like a personal vendetta or something. Sounds like the show had at least solid ratings; i thought finding shows that drew was hard, so why would they cancel? Methinks there was something else not really business related. A personal beef between an executive and Frank would count, including being butt hurt that Frank didn't want to continue as Sgt Carter. Or something against Jim that could be blamed on something else.

Wow! I think Sgt. Carter USMC would've worked..... especially if they kept the original creative team. It's too bad because I would've watched it, and I think it would've been funny. After all, so many of the Gomer Pyle episodes revolved around Carter with Pyle just being there.

I think Sutton missed an opportunity when he turned down his own show. Especially one with the premise the network had mind. It would have been groundbreaking for the time and could have launched Sutton on to bigger things than just being Jim Nabors sidekick. I really think Sutton dropped the ball there. Mistake.

Sgt. Carter's first name was Vince, not Frank..
PETTICOAT JUNCTION was cancelled a year earlier in 1970, as the show's ratings fell badly after Bea Benederet died in Oct. 1968.
Since Jim Nabors made guest appearances on each of Carol Burnett's season premieres, she returned the favor & appeared on his show. I've never seen his show, but I read old tv listings confirming this.

The Sgt. Carter spinoff sounded good. But I'm not surprised Frank Sutton was tired of the character. It seems strange he didn't grow his hair out after moving on. The first season Gomer Pyle USMC DVD set included one of the brother-in-law sketches from the variety show. Ronnie did fine. But Frank seemed a little out of place.
Loyalty seems too rare in show business. Thankfully their careers didn't seem to suffer from the cancellation. Jim continued to perform and recorded several albums. That included some Gospel recordings. Frank worked on stage. Sadly, he didn't live much longer. Ronnie's still with us.

Interesting point. R. Lee Ermey grew his hair out after "Full Metal Jacket" in hopes of landing more diverse roles. I saw him on a talk show during this period and he was barely recognizable. It didn't really work. The public loved Gunny Hartman and he came to embrace the typecasting.

If they did the Sgt Carter Carter- it might have been more interesting if they did it as a realistic Drama with Sgt Carter and his Men actually going into Combat- maybe even Vietnam. Actually LOu Grant was spun off from the Mary Tyler Moore Show and the Lou Grant show became a Drama dealing with serious Issues of the time.
