Thanks to keto, I lost 150 lbs between May 2021 and May 2022 and have kept weight off since. Lowered BP from 195/105 to 110/67 and got off blood pressure meds. And list goes on. Best thing is I am “home” with this style of eating. Haven’t had a potato chip or a slice of bread in 2 1/2 years. Haven’t had so much as a sniffle, either. Best health decision I have ever made.
@@tatianesoarespereira in the beginning, I tapered down my carbohydrates to get them absolutely as low as possible - - that is as close to zero as possible. 1 g of protein per pound of target bodyweight. Fat, about 1/3 of the calories of the protein.
It's awesome it helps some people; what it did for you was amazing! However, for some of us, like me, being a type 1 Diabetic, I wound up in a state of ketoacidosis and almost died after going on Keto. Being sick as a diabetic can cause your blood sugar to rise very rapidly, my blood glucose averages around 90, but I caught the flu and it shot up really high and since I had ketones floating around in my bloodstream I almost died. I should have known better than to go into a state of Ketosis, I have had to check my ketones my whole life as a type 1 diabetic to make sure they don't go high because ketones and high blood sugar are a deadly combination. However, after all the amazing stories I heard from people on Keto or Carnivore, I gave it a try, sadly it was the worst medical decision I ever made. It probably can help type 2 diabetics in the short term, in the long term high amounts of unhealthy fats causes insulin resistance to get worse. But for type 1 diabetics, I would caution against Keto and especially against Carnivore.
@Someone-vn9ce A keto diet does NOT cause ketoacidosis in type 1 diabetics. On the contrary, if you didn't reduce your insulin doses, you would almost certainly have hypoglycemia. For those lacking an understanding of this, type 1 diabetics must match their insulin doses, through whatever delivery method, to the amounts of carbs they are consuming. The higher the carb intake, the higher the insulin dose. If they don't take enough insulin for a day or two, this could cause ketoacidosis, which is caused by very high blood glucose levels. If you were doing keto properly and ingesting 20 grams of carbs or less per day, the insulin doses needed would be quite small, way less than usual. However, if you neglect to adjust your insulin to match your new lowered carb intake, you will almost certainly experience hypoglycemia, which is caused by very low blood glucose. Obviously you must either enlist your doctor's assistance or learn how to do this yourself, which is pretty easy these days with so much information to be had from reputable sources. So please, do yourself and anyone else reading this a favor, and get educated about the differences between hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, ketosis and ketoacidosis.
@@terised Thank you for setting things straight. 🏆 Dr. Richard Bernstein - himself a Type 1 diabetic, nearing 90, who had to figure out for himself the safest and most effective way to control his glucose - explains in great detail why not limiting carbs is inviting trouble for all diabetics. See Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and his many detailed videos on RUclips. By contrast, these guys are not experts and are way out of their shallows.
Been loose keto (Cheto) for almost a year, feel better and down about 40 pounds. Eat more vegetables than I used to. Doc said my blood work was pristine. Triglycerides were almost 400 now around 50. Very substantial and in no way a starvation diet.
Docs you are the ones calling it a diet. I call keto a way of life. Been eating keto for 7 years and my metabolic panel improved tremendously and I am no longer obese. To many of us it’s just a lifestyle way of eating. The Keto community is growing and is really not as restrictive as you think. After 7 years I no longer crave the high sugar type foods. So me the choice between meds and keto, I go with Keto. Good discussion.
I'm on the anti-sugar, low-carb Mediterranean diet since January of this year and I LOVE it!! I cheat sometimes but I'm still the healthiest I've been in decades.
that is the point, so we can cheat occasionally until we die. Not doing keto might caused diabetes and force us to diet from sweet food when we reach 40.
Hi, Docs, I'm a doctor myself and went to med school at UCSF. Diabetes and vascular disease run in my family and several years ago I was diagnosed pre-diabetic. I eat low-carb/keto and my blood sugars have been wonderful ever since. I might have more motivation than most to stick to a low carb diet (I recommend it to most of my patients and they decline) because of all the things I know about diabetes and how the higher your A1C, the higher your risk of premature death. I have no trouble sticking to the diet. I get very tired of hearing that it shouldn't be recommended because it is too restrictive. That is not a reason to withhold information about this very healthful diet from patients.
I’ve been on keto for 4 months and have dropped 35 pounds thus far. I have lost all interest in carbs (except maybe a bite of ice cream once in awhile).
I've been keto for 7 years, no problems sticking to the diet. I focus more on protein and mono unsaturated fats. Trigs went from 250 down to 90, HDL up from 30 to 62. HbA1c 4.8, fasting insulin 2.7.
I am 60. For years I have suffered with acid reflux thinking it was caused by high acid or spicy foods. I have had endoscopies and seen GI docs, none of whom ever suggested I might have a food sensitivity of some kind like gluten. I decided to eliminate gluten, processed sugar & corn from my diet. This has been eye opening. I can drink coffee & eat tomato sauce in the same day now with no GERD or other problems. I am not on a keto specific diet because I eat fruits as well. I was born lactose intolerant & could not have milk as a child, however I am able to eat other dairy products such as cream, cottage & aged cheeses in moderation. My belly also feels so much less bloated. I don't believe most Americans have much tolerance for gluten or corn. The frankenwheat & GM corn are not the same as what I ate as a kid. Bread in Europe is much more digestible than here in the U.S. Food there is not so over processed.
You are way off base. Most people do not have insensitivities to corn and wheat or anything else other than maybe lactose. I had reflux issues too. I lost 50 lbs and it went away. I think it is from fat stored in your midsection and messing things up.
We need rules like the European Union. They are doing great things. The only problem they created was fabricating the fake virus covid and use China as a scapegoat.
I was keto/very low carb for a couple of years. I lost a lot of weight, I had more energy, and my brain fog went away. My mood was much more positive, too. I didn't stick to it, but I learned a lot about how my body and brain react to simple sugars, and I still tend to eat lower carb because it makes me feel better. Also, you don't need to eat bacon.
I was keto for 2 years and moved on to a Carnivore diet . Benefits for me .weight loss , lower BP , bloods all normal including choleststerol , no more joint pain , no more patchy dry skin ,no sluggishness after a nap . plenty energy and I only eat between 12 midday and 6pm as I'm never hungry . Unexepected benefit was more space in the fridge and more cupboard space as I no longer have the rubbish I used to store .
I was on a standard diet for most of my life. 10 years ago I felt I was getting older and my health was declining. 3 years ago I got on Keto diet. I now feel much younger, my health better than 10 years ago, and have no problem sticking to this diet, contrary to what plant-baed people would like to have you believe. I love the eggs, meat, and low carb veggies. I don't crave refined carbohydrates any more.
"standard" diet? Highly processed foods on a daily basis, relatively large portions of unhealthy carbs, the occasional junk food binge,...? Awesome that it worked for you, but imo most people are probably better off just following the age old health advice without commiting to a restrictive diet.
@@vetzaaak You mean so they can take tons of medications and have lots of health problems. My Mom ate SAD way her whole life. She had tons of surgeries and was on a lot of medications. Then she was on dialysis for three years at the end of her life. She had a mini stroke in her 50's. She had congestive heart failure in her 60's. She always struggled with obesity her whole life. She also had mental health problems. She had heart surgery, knees replaced, shoulder, gallbladder removed, brain surgery, wrist for carpal tunnel, fibroids in her uterus couldn't get pregnant and historectomy in her 40s. She had back problem was in the hospital on traction. My Dad had bypass surgery and alzheimers. He was a type II diabetic on insulin. He was always over weight. He always struggled with depression. He suffered with arthritis since his 50s. He also had his knees replaced. I want quality of life. I am 57 and keto has reversed my aging. I was on no grains and dairy prior due to celiacs and hashimoto's which helped a lot. I look like I am 30s and 57.
@@lori5946 Awesome that Keto has such great effects on you! I'm not sure who "they" are, but I'm assuming your opening sentence refers to "most people"? Most people do NOT take "tons of medications" and don't have "lots of health problems"; due to their balanced/moderate diet. The suggestions that that's the default consequence from NOT living a Keto lifestyle...couldn't be further from the truth. And "celiacs and hashimoto" means you're not the "average" person who my general advice and opinions apply to :)
@@vetzaaak I am a RN for 30 years in Labor and Delivery. The amount of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and mental illness is way up. My sons friend since childhood just passed away. He always struggled with his weight and sounded like he had a heart attack. I seen a lot of young woman taking tons of medications for anxiety and depression. I am seeing more autoimmune. My last travel nurse assignment there was rarely a normal pregnancy. Everyone was high risk.
@@lori5946 I fail to see how any of that proves that a diet with extremely low amount of carbohydrates is supposed to be the best way to live a long healthy life. If any of those cases you're refering to can be blamed on an abundance of pizza and beer and soda, than sure, keto would be a great alternative. But if we stick to the data, science and statistics, it seems like even though a very restrictive diet can be extremely effecient for anyone who manages to endure it, more subtle life style changes can be more sustainable and lead to long terms succes much easier.
I've been on keto for 1 year and lost 65lbs and feel great. I'm 70 and feel a lot younger . I never feel hungry. I eat a lot of meats and leafy greens. My doctor took me off blood pressure meds and told me to keep doing what I was doing because my bloodwork is better now than it was. I don't consider it as a diet . Its more of not eating stuff that's not good for you like pasta ,breads, cereal, rice . They all made me feel tired. I will be eating this way for ever.
Ok you might be right but the way I understand it That if you eat only vegetables your not getting enough protein. That's why I add seafood ,beef and chicken. I would rather not eat stuff that I can't pronounce the ingredients that are put in them.@@TalkingWithDocs
I went Keto 5 years ago and lost 150lbs within 2 years. I am still keto. I even was keto during Open Heart Surgery to replace an aortic valve that had a 5mm hole in it. Not related to keto. Endocarditis. Good thing I went from 321lbs to 170lbs before my surgery, or else I fear I would not be here telling you my story. I am now 63 years old and in the best shape of my life. My lipids on Keto are: Total Cholesterol=186, Triglycerides=46, HDL=62, LDL=115, VLDL=9. I do have to watch that I get plenty of electrolytes: Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, & to a lesser extent Calcium, as Keto makes you pee a lot. I stay away from Stevia because it is a diuretic and a vasodilator.
Mediterranean diet is still the best. That's why so many people in that region live to be 100. It's cutting back on the bad carbs is where the success lies...whether it is me to or Mediterranean.
@@bmwlane8834 Having lost 150lbs, I’ll have to say that the best diet is the one that works for you. I tried going vegan. I tried the Mediterranean diet. I tried the Paleo diet. But, the only diet that worked for me was Keto. This might not be true for everyone because we as humans are not made from a cookie cutter. Every individual is different.
Other Benefits of Keto -eliminated insulin resistance -maintain weight for over 5 years (so far) -reduced inflammation -less joint pain -ibuprofen no longer needed -more energy -better mental function -reduced nighttime sinus drainage -no stomach upset -no Prilosec/Tums required -no GERD during meals -no GERD during sleep -improved Lipids -clearer skin -reduced hemorrhoid pain After 5 years I find this lifestyle very sustainable. Don’t listen to docs who have never tried it and don’t have any clinical experience with it. These guys are showing their ignorance.
I am 20 months into a keto diet after becoming dangerously pre-diabetic. I've lost 35 lbs, brought down my A1C, lowered my blood pressure, and best of all. . .I don't obsess about food anymore. Energy levels, sleep, and mental alertness have also improved. I'm keto for life, because I'd rather die than to go back on a carb-heavy diet and how it made me feel.
64 years years old, diagnosed T2 diabetes a bit more than 5 years ago. Started low carb right after diagnosis and 3 months after got retested and A1C had returned to normal. Lost over 50 lbs, reduced BP, brain fog, aches and pains. I was a normal weight for most of my life, but once in my 40s-50s, started to gain fast. Tried low fat, more veg less meat and was constantly hungry. 3 months was the longest I could sustain the restriction. Always loved cooking and made lots of different foods -loved the variety and always looked for something different. Hardly went a few hours without thinking of food and what to eat next. After more than 5 years on low carb, I’ve maintained my improved health and weight loss. I don’t obsess about food anymore. When travelling I don’t have to worry about when I can get to some food as I can easily go for a day without eating if I need to. Love this lifestyle.
Yep, I’m reversing my diabetes and now have normal blood sugar levels..yet doctors want to tell me it’s not healthy, get the hell out of here. I trust my blood numbers and glucometer more than I do doctors who’s medical education is funded by post cereal and other major corporations
Hubby & I went carnivore for 30 days then switched to ketovore 8 months ago. Hubby lost 30 lbs & I've lost 50. Inflammation went away first week for both of us, my ezcema is almost completely gone, my blood pressure has come down, I'm no longer pre diabetic. My husband has CLL (a incurable form of cancer) & his blood work has improved unbelievable compared to when he was not eating this way. We have been on other diets but this is the only diet we have been on that we are totally satisfied. We eat less without even thinking about it cause we ate not hungry. We no longer call it a diet, it is our way of eating from now on. Bacon & eggs for breakfast, any kind of meat for supper & sometimes low carb veggies included. No counting calories, no thinking of food all day cause your starving. You will get flack from some doctors that this is not healthy but you cannot deny the blood results. Try it for even 2 weeks or a month & see how you feel. Do your research & check out the thousands of people that this way of eating has helped them! Its amazing!❤
Glad it is working for you and your husband. Most physicians are concerned about the long term risks associated with this style of eating but early success is impressive for sure
Check out these doctors, Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Berg, Thecarbadditiondoctor. These will lead you to many more plus they will have the research papers to show you.

Very good video. I am 72 and struggled with weight all my life. Went to my doctor and asked to be weighed. 273 lbs. Shocking. My doctor said it would be nearly impossible for me to lose weight. I walked out shattered. Couple days later I said I had to try. Started keto diet and in 6 months lost 40 lbs. and now fit into my suit which I havent for 7 years. I am no doctor but it has to be better than being so over weight. cheers
Stop saying starving. You don't starve on Keto/Carnivor diet. Best thing I ever did. Cured me of my food addiction and diabetes. You don't NEED carbs to live.
You actually do need carbs to live. You might be able to barely function without it but it’s not healthy. If you want to live on an unhealthy and unnatural diet go for it. Just don’t lie to others and say it’s healthy. Saying you cured your type 2 diabetes because if keto isn’t true because all you did is eliminate carbs and turned your body to something that it shouldn’t be using for energy.
So, what that doctor essentially said was pharma came up with an anti seizure med so you need not to eat a proper diet. Glad I don't have these two for doctors
But that makes you a person who likes to poo poo big pharma. Also if you have type 2 diabetes you can learn to live with it. Work is obviously quiet so they are trying to drum up business by sharing confusing dietary advice.
I aim for a "keto-profile" of diet but am not rigid with it. But as mentioned it works superbly well for controlling free glucose levels and this - combined with intermittent fasting - has kept me below the idabetes II threshold, having been "pre-diabetic" for the last 25 years with no need for any meds. However, this is not a one-factor contribution. My doctor gave me an ultimatum back in 1996. He said you have a choice of this diet (DASH) and exercise - aka lifestyle change - or these meds. I chose the lifestyle change, bust a gut in the gym, changed what I ate and lost 30 lb over 2 years and transformed fat into muscle mass, became much more active. Over time + research I have also tried elements of the Keto diet but blended it with what works for me. If there is any one single thing that made the difference, I would say it is the physical exercise and lifesyle changes. The diet changes were secondary imo. I am now 71 and medication free, fit and well - so far ......
I've been 100% carnivore for 4 years and lost 85 lbs. Obviously that's not going to fit everyone's lifestyle forever, but I think everyone should at least try it for 3 months or so. For me, it fixed so many things - even small stupid stuff that I thought was the natural part of aging. I'm 52 now. This is not a lifestyle, it's my life and I am very fond of it.
The Ketogenic way of eating is a bit restrictive but it is worth it for the benefits, one of which is weight loss. Some other benefits are lower blood pressure, lower hbA1c, improved skin conditions, better sleep and less apnea, reduced inflammation, reduced joint pain, less medication, lower triglycerides, higher HDL, reversed metabolic syndrome, etc. After you begin to correct the hyperinsulinemia, weight loss, and other benefits occur. The carbs stimulate insulin and excess hunger which triggers fat storage. Weight gain is a symptom of the problem, not the cause.
The insulin model of weight management has been largely debunked. When adjusting for calories, keto is not better than a low fat diet in losing weight. The only exception is at the beginning when you lose a ton of water weight from glycogen storage depletion, but this isn’t the fat loss you’re interested in.
Keto has helped me get of t2 meds and lose weight These doctors mentioned getting on meds as a fix for issues. I’m personally willing to control my foods to get off the meds
We have been LOW Carb since 2018. My husband’s triglycerides dropped from 4.65 (super high), to 1.15 in 12 weeks. HDL went from .69 to 1.10 and he dropped 26 lbs. inflammation and arthritis calmed down, hypertension corrected and bonus….gastro issues resolved,. Turns out he was gluten sensitive. Didn’t know until wheat was eliminated. Food tastes great, no longer crave wheat bread, we eat flax bread made at home.
4 years for me on keto, lost 80+ pounds kept it off and have never felt better. I am not certainly not bored with my eating. I was diagnosed with type two diabetes is my reason for starting keto. I am no longer type 2. Definitely changed my eating lifestyle.
Since eating ketogenic I've dropped 20 lbs, lowered A1c to 5.1, lowered blood pressure 116/75 , changed my waist from 38 to 36. I'm 5'11", and dropped 2 medications taking only one now. I just turned 71. both my father and grandfather passed with complications of diabetes driven by life style choices and being sedentary. I don't want that for me. My whole family has struggled with weight and now my sister has also lost 20 lbs since I talked to her about ketogenic eating. I don't like the word "diet" as the word sets you up to fail and besides it's not about counting calories or food restriction. When talking ketogenic you missed a very important factor and that's exercise! To excelerate your benefit you need to exercise at least 1 hour a day. I exercise 2-1/2 hours intensely 4 days a week. Before going ketogenic my lipid was total cholesterol 133, HDL 31 triglycerides 133 and LDL 78. My doctor didn't take my current lipid profile this time and I was very disappointed, thinking about dropping him, he just wanted me to go on statins.I said no to statins. I think I'll see a lipidologist. I eat ketogenic style . . . not keto diet. I am however critical of plant based diets as it sends a wrong message as you eat 100% carbohydrates and usually the wrong ones then folks wonder why they can't lose weight. We are carnivores and meant to eat mostly meat and fat to sustain ourselves since the beginning of time.
Wow! and good for you as well @robnord1. It's interesting that since the beginning of man we relied on 90% meat and 10 percent vegetation for sustenance. Oh! what's that called? Ketogenic diet!!!
@@Robnord1 Actually carbs are not your worst enemy - The big problem is insulin - and the big problem that leads to Type 2 diabetes, is insulin resistance. Too many doctors are obsessed with testing A1c and FBG, they ignore results that are borderline and fail to see the warning signs so many years in advance. If they were to test insulin:glucose ratio it would go a long way into preventing T2D. The issue is insulin resistance - Carbs are not your enemy, it's the type of carbs and quantity people eat that is bad. Keep your insulin levels and ratios under check and consumption of refined carbs under check, you can enjoy all the foods you like and you would be surprised at how much you can enjoy on even
You guys are the best. I've been following KETO for 2 years. I had to lose weight after Covid and being house-bound. Happy to say the weight came off. I have two meals a day: breakfast and dinner. That's it. Not hungry during the day either. I've become so used to eating low carb that I'm good with it. I'll definitely have my levels checked at my next physical. Keep up these awesome videos.
I started keto about 2 months ago and have already lost 26lbs! I have been hitting the gym everyday etc and I’m looking to switch to a more performance oriented diet (33% Fat, 33% Protein, 33% Carbs) but it’s also difficult for me to imagine going back to carby food. I went from eating all processed junk to 0 processed foods, mostly meat and nonstarchy veggies and feel great, just struggling to improve at cardio/running
Every day Im learning more about the ketogenic diet thanks to HyperKeto. Its not just about losing weight, but also improving overall health and well-being... come on u know that.
My main food sin was sugar. As I aged I found I was exhibiting Type 2 symptoms and decided to quite sugar all together. I was 35 pounds over weight for my body type. I quickly lost 5 pounds with in a week, mostly water. I studied the Keto diet and decide to try it. I went through fasting for (1 meal a day) about 6 weeks and then moved into Keto. The weight fell off quickly, dizzy spells vanished and before long I was pinching an inch. I reached 155 lbs after about 4 months. I decided that 155 was just too skinny so I began to put weight back on until I reached 165 lbs. Now at 70 years old I feel much more energetic, I do not use sugar, I eat healthy, minimal alcohol use and an active life style. I don't follow Keto anymore, I keep my cholesterol intake low and no dairy products.
Just to point out, keto novices tend to eat lots of bacon, etc. Long term lifestyle keto people tend to eat broiled salmon and a big salad. Many keto people move to a Mediterranean keto diet. I owned a keto bakery, and had many diabetic customers, plus people with epilepsy, PCOS, celiac disease, etc. We also had a number of endurance athletes who were keto. Keto works great for endurance sports, as you don’t have to worry about the mile 22 glycogen drop. I did 2 marathons on keto. One customer in particular comes to mind. He was so overweight that he couldn’t have bariatric surgery. He had to lose 40 lbs first. He lost over 160 lbs on keto, when he realized he didn’t need surgery after all. I saw many successes like this. I stayed keto for 9 years myself. I’m moving from the US to Ecuador, and decided that the Mediterranean diet would be a better fit there, so I’m transitioning over.
I know many many people who have been eating keto/low carb for YEARS , including myself. It is totally sustainable, anything BUT boring, the food is delicious and at 65 I feel younger than I did at 45. I no longer have hip pain (that went first, not the weight), have completely reversed T2D, and am healthier than I ever was. My cholesterol numbers are fantastic…it’s simply not true that fat causes high cholesterol and any doc that just looks at your LDL and not the whole picture…triglycerides, HDL ratio…and pushes dangerous medication instead…is doing a disservice. All that said, I believe the main reason I feel so good is more about not consuming manufactured food of any kind than how many carbs I consume. Manufactured “food” is the problem, and is what is causing the obesity, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s epidemic 100%.
Nice post, Mary! I heard this at the keto "watercooler" recently -- "Man is the only animal smart enough to manufacture his own food -- and the only one dumb enough to eat it!"
My husband was diagnosed with T2 diabetes in the fall of 2019. He was never overweight, had been a competitive athlete into his late 20s, always stayed fit, and ate in accordance with Health Canada guidelines. He was prescribed metformin. It was awful. He stayed on it for 8 weeks, because the doc and pharmacists said that the side effects would stop. They didn’t. He had never been sicker in his life. Then we came across Jason Fung. From there we walked into the world of keto. He has been able to maintain his blood sugar at normal levels by following the diet. It is not easy. In fact it’s really difficult and requires constantly checking ingredients, testing and testing and testing. But after 4 years his foot neuropathy has improved dramatically. He has had to learn a whole new way of cooking and eating. But it has been worth it. Certainly better than taking metformin.
@@maraetoile8102T2D is due to excess weight and visceral fat in the pancreas and the liver. It’s not likely for lean individuals with low body fat to have T2D. Unless he really has a genetic propensity for T2D. To be on the safe side, test him for T1D.
Love the keto lifestyle (20g of total carbs or less a day). Never going back to the SAD. Off all meds and feet have been pain free for almost a year now. Hiking weekly and previously would dread a flight of stairs. Lots of information coming about the cholesterol myth/hoax/lie so right now I’m not at all worried about my LDL as long as my HDL and triglycerides are on point. Science is forever changing so 🤷🏻♀️
We agree don't do the SAD. For the record there is no cholesterol hoax. It's naive to think a high LDL does not have consequences. And the trouble with some of these fad diets is that the consequences are not immediate. Heart disease and cancer take time. It's not the low carb that causes the problems. It's the dependence on animal products. Hey up to you. We wish you the best
Great video! I lost 80 pounds on a vegetarian keto diet over two years (2017 - 2018). My husband also lost 30 pounds and reversed his type 2 diabetes. Everything went to hell during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns and we both regained all the weight we had lost. The monotony of a keto diet made it unsustainable for us. This year we started a minimal oil, whole food, plant-based (WFPB) diet. My husband's A-1c went from 9.5 to 6.1 in three months, and he lost 25 pounds. He is doing this through lifestyle alone without medications. I have lost 25 pounds, too. The good news is we love the food, and there's a lot of variety. It's a great fit for us. The shocking thing: a high carb, low fat diet is reversing my husband's diabetes faster than doing ultra low carb. I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own two eyes. The book "Mastering Diabetes" was really helpful in getting started.
Keto IS a lifestyle, not a diet. 😊 Try it out, dear Doctors. Not at all hard to stick to, since you are not so hungry all the time (continuous flow of energy in form of ketones) and no need to eat bacon or overly fatty food. You can choose good fats like olive oil, avocados etc. I love it. 👍
I'm 54. Started near keto in January after blood work showed diabetes, fatty liver and high cholesterol. Four months after diet change an 18:6 intermittent fasting everything returned to normal. I'm staying! FYI. I sell hay for a living. Horses can suffer metabolic syndrome too. And recover well on "low sugar" hay. There's forage testing for that...
I done keto/low carb diet and I reversed T2D over seven years ago along with high blood pressure, off all meds and have maintained this by following a low carb lifestyle. I also fast most days for about 16-18 hours so its two meals a day I do go off the rails every now and then but feel like crap so its back to low carb for me.
I've been keto for about 18 months. I had full bloodwork done after a year, and it all came out looking good. Low blood pressure & cholesterol. I was low on potassium, but that's normal for me, so I'm adding foods to fix that. I lost 55 lb in a year, so not quickly, and I am having zero difficulty maintaining it. I had bariatric surgery 9 years ago, losing over 100 lbs in about 5 months. I gained back half over the following few years. Keto is so much better than bariatric surgery which I would not recommend. Besides the fact that it almost killed me, I was in a coma for 6 weeks, my stomach stretched out within a cpl of years. It certainly does not hold what it used to, but it's not tiny. The best part of keto is the mental clarity and improvement of my depression. Due to hypoxia, my brain was very muddled. I still have memory challenges, but the improvement has been amazing. I will never give up keto for that alone. The lack of food chatter, cravings and weight loss are just a bonus to the improved brain function.
Congrats. The main issue with these diets long term is the saturated fat and reliance on animal products. Worth considering adding some fruits and vegetables
A healthy ketogenic or low carbohydrate diet based mostly on unprocessed animal-based food is certainly NOT an issue long term as this is how were are designed to eat as a species from an evolutionary perspective for over 2 millions years. Sure there's no issue adding some fruits and vegetables but that doesn't mean that the presence of "animal-based food is inherently unhealthy". We need to be very clear on that distinction. A purely plant based diet devoid of any animal food (veganism) is however, as a matter of fact, very new to the Homo sapiens and cannot possibly outperform a diet that has stood the test of time for millions of years. It's peculiar how most channel do not say anything negative about veganism directly but are much more prone to criticise diets mostly animal-based (even if not carnivore). You'll rarely see mainstream channels such as this one mention "we suggest you add a bit of animal products in your diet". We wouldn't exist if meat "caused" disease and would have been wiped out during the course of evolution. The lineage of the plant-based Australopheticus robustus would have taken over instead of the Homo habilis, ergaster, erectus and sapiens (all animal based) for example. Anyone that states meat as "causative" in diseases is guided by either blind ideology or ignorance of updated scientific facts. Any channel and clinicians who tell you otherwise have clearly not kept up to date with actual science over the past few decades or have an inherent pro plant-based bias/conflict of interest. The fact that our diet should mostly be animal-based is strongly substantiated by unbiased science and publications...emphasis on UNBIASED. You will find a multitude of publications against animal-based food and fats but they show "association" with confounding factors not necessarily disclosed and do not hold up to expert scrutiny. There is no unbiased evidence or RCTs to date on the planet that can demonstrate "causation" between "healthy unprocessed animal-based food/meat and disease". As a quick example of how corrupted publications can be, consider the fact that the 2 papers that the IARC brach of the WHO used to push the narrative that "meat is likely carcinogenic" are corrupted due to the fact that 2 known carcinogens were injected in rats in those trials namely Azoxymethane and Dimethylhydrazine. That completely invalidates the findings. A few members on the IARC panel also were part of the 7th day Adventist church (they practice veganism) and refused to disclose that conflict of interest when asked by another member. So there's absolutely no unbiased and ethically produced evidence to date that unprocessed meat "is causative" in colon cancer or any other cancers for that matter. Also consider the fact that studies such as the Minnesota Coronay trial and the Sydney Heart trial were buried because they showed no causation between animal fat and CVD/Disease. The Minnesota trial was actually more robust than any trial that we could possibly do now as the patients were within a hospital setting with strictly controlled food intake. We can't do that now due to ethical laws. Patients in the Sydney trial actually died from the low animal-based food with increased risk of disease. That observation was made following the Women's initiative trial as well among other trials that have demonstrated the benefits of animal fats and animal-based diets. There was actually an inverse association observed In those mentioned trials therefore highlighting the importance of animal fats for health. Those 2 prior trials were buried for decades as the NIH back in the 60's had already embarked on the "low fat is healthy" wagon and pushed forward all plant-based businesses including the sugar/processed food/pharmaceutical industries. So it would have been a very inconvenient truth as it would have prompted the re-assessment of the whole "saturated fat vs disease" paradigm and would have affected "business". The narrative that "saturated fat and meat cause disease long term" is based on biased and corrupted science and this can be demonstrated. I'll come back to this later with a more in-depth response in several parts as there's too much to say. I posted briefly on this channel before with regards to the matter. No one is saying you should over eat animal fats/meat but a healthy eating habit based on mostly animal food will ALWAYS be healthier than one mostly plant based and put you at a metabolic advantage. I'll explain more later as soon as I get a moment to get back to that thread. An animal based diet is superior in every way with regards to factors such as the quality of proteins/nutrient content (contains essential amino acids and nutrients such as methionine, lysine, leucine, taurine, choline, B12, DHA/EPA, Retinol, K2 etc. in the right concentration and in their bioavailable form. For e.g. the conversion of ALA (plant based Omega3 fatty acid) into DHA/EPA is less than 5% and only a proportion of the population can convert other nutrients such as beta carotene (plant based vitamin A) into Retinol (animal based bioavailable form of vitamin A) just as quick examples. There's also less insulin response on an animal-based diet and this helps maintain insulin sensitivity long term and reduce the incidence of T2DM and metabolic issues such as high blood pressure/inflammtion/autoimmune disease etc. You need much more variety if consuming plants to make up for deficiencies and end up eating much more carbs/sugars/fructose/excess of inflammatory vegetable oils/trans fats inherent to all artificially produced vegetable oil (due to pressure/temperature/toxic metals as catalyst). There a reason why all metabolic diseases have drastically increased over the past few decades in spite of the fact that all official health institutions have been telling the planet to eat less meat and animal fats. The incidence of CVD, obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance, cancer, autoimmune disease are all on the rise and are not showing any signs of slowing down. Is the global population to blame for over eating or were we give the wrong nutritional advice with the suggestion that carbs and plants should be out main source of nutrition? I think an increasing number of people are beginning to slowly see how corruption, conflict of interests and ideology have been causing a perversion of healthcare and scientific publications over the past few decades. I would suggest you follow other channels such as "Low Carb Down Under", "Public Health Collaboration", "The Metabolic Mind", "Low Carb Conferences" among others to obtain more honest and reliable information about health and nutrition.
@@TalkingWithDocs All things being equal In the context of a healthy eating habit and lifestyle (i.e. excluding over eating and poor lifestyle), care to provide evidence supporting the statement that "saturated fat and reliance on animal products cause long term issues"?
Ive recently started following the ketogenic diet with the *HyperKeto* plan, and I have to admit, Im seeing some impressive results! Energy all day long, and the fat is melting away.
I lost 40lbs on Keto and my blood tests were the best i've had... no more statins or stomach pills for GERD. Also doing intermittent fasting. Saving money on groceries and gym membership. Never hungry or have cravings for sugar. Just eating whole foods. Have to make sure you get enough potassium and magnesium in your diet.
I'm currently on a keto diet, not for fat loss but as an attempt at reducing side effects that I get from having epilepsy. I still take anticonvulsant medications and have talked to my doctor about it. It didn't do too much at reducing the chronic fatigue that I get from my condition but I found that it gave me a lot more energy, mental clarity, and made my body feel healthier. As a student it changed my life, since I can now study for 13 hours a day, turns out digesting carbs makes it harder for you to concentrate. Also as a bonus I lost a lot of fat, while gaining muscles. After you get used to having less explosive energy at the gym and keep working out regularly, and eating a high protein diet for a keto diet (40~% protein depending on your weight/age/metabolism), you start looking extremely lean cause of the low body fat, ketones do basically the same job as carbs with the extra function of burning all your excess fat at a ridiculously fast rate. I'm probably not going to go back to a normal diet.
So we would agree to eliminate sugar and refined carbs. Complex carbs that are whole foods don't have the same effect due to the associated fiber. But yes don't need to be zero carb
@@TalkingWithDocs complex carb like rice, potato, etc makes my blood sugar rise like crazy. One medium size apple sent it to 200s. So no matter how healthy carbs/vegetables are, it does not work the same for all.
I’m in my late 50’s and began Keto eight months ago, and I feel great. My arthritis went away, and my bloodwork is awesome. My brain fog, blah mood, and eczema is all gone. My digestive issues are gone as well. I am no longer in need of the edema, and arthritis medications that I used to take. This is now my way of life, and totally worth the change.❤
@@TalkingWithDocsbut keto diet is not about eating meats. It's about eating fats and lots of veggies. I'm not sure why are you talking about meat? Keto is not MEAT. But please tell me what product is better than meat protein and full of nutrients like meat?
There are SO many issues with "diet" and weight loss, Keto and other approaches, and never have I found the "Talk to your doctor" approach helpful. It needs to be a bigger part of med school, imho. Was sent to a dietician who did not further my knowledge, (I have been researching and reading for 45 years about nutrition.) She did tell me most people know what to do to lose weight, but the "emotional eating" component was the sticking part. She started a class for people to learn to cope with this, but, sadly, there was not room for all the people who wanted to take it. Other approach---Bernstein diet, which my doctor approved me for. Lost 20 lbs and my gall bladder (ya, no conclusive proof there is a connection). Gained and lost weight and gained again for 40 years. Never has a doctor been helpful. I don't qualify for Eating Disorder clinic because my bingeing/over-eating is not considered drastic enough. I won't do keto because I really love complex carbs like brown rice and buckwheat groats and oatmeal and think they are a healthy addition to my fruit/veg/protein. It's the sugar/processed food thing that's killing me (literally). Two friends swear by Keto and have lost weight and kept it off for 6 months...
A doctor at our local hospital put me on this keto type diet... really helped with my sugar highs and lows... I would wake up wide awake and alert every morning, loved that. When I was out, I found it was hard to stick to the diet. Lost about 7 inches from my waist and approximately 30lbs. Problem is when go off, hard get back on and found did not cure my diabetes, as it was back just as bad. So I do my best to be on it most of the time now, as it really helps with my diabetes & keeps weight stable. I use ACV in my water during the day. Now I do eat toast one or two slices a day with 3 eggs at noon. Sometimes later in day, crackers with cheese up to 50g a day. Also XL coffee with triple cream is still my main stay every morning, just in morning... So helps with my sugars and being alert. Supper is large vegetable smoothie (I make) with palm size meat portion & green tea, sometimes... I do cheat at times but try to do this keto eating as I feel better. Thanks for your info!! Always enjoy your videos.
It took me about 6 weeks to become fat adapted. It was at this stage of my keto diet, I did not want or carve any snacks, carbs, etc. Not one carving for sugar. Carbs, are highly addictive
Yes sugar and refined carbs are unhealthy and you can train yourself not to crave them by eliminating them. Unfortunately saturated fat and animal protein are not the answer. Yes in the short term they can help you lose weight and reduce cravings but the consequences of hypertension, heart disease and other chronic illness come years later. Be sure to continue to eat fruits and vegetables that provide nutrients, anti oxidants and phytochemicals that simply are not present in meat, eggs and dairy
Consult other channels for more accurate information on saturated fats and the keto / carnivore lifestyle..Dr. Ken D Berry and Dr. Anthony Chaffee just to name a few ..I’ve been Keto for 4 years and carnivore for a year and the health benefits are incredible..these doctors are fear mongering saturated fat which is false outdated information
@@TalkingWithDocs Keto does not contribute to heart disease, that is misinformation. You need to listen to Dr Ovadia, heart surgeon. You have no idea what you are talking about!
@@TalkingWithDocs Eating that way will not raise blood pressure nor does it cause heart disease. Chronic disease is tied to metabolic health and insulin/inflammation. I tried Keto and it worked I lost 40 lbs. And my A1C came down. I did this to controll my type 2 diabetes. after about a year i got really bored of it and put the weight back on and my A1c shot back up. After watching this video, im going to try again. Thanks Doctors.
Recommend reading The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet book by Donald Hensrud. It recommends serving sizes for food and having nonstarchy vegetables and a serving of fruit with each meal. Lost 30 pounds following this diet and it also recommends whole grains instead of refined grains, reduced sugar intake, and no processed foods.
I am a 45 F. My Primary Care Nurse Practitioner has been very impressed with my results on a keto diet and fasting intermittently. My A1c (in 10 months) went from 8.6 to 5.2. I eat only when I am hungry during an 8 hour window (usually 11am-7pm). I do not do commercial keto with all the packaged snacks and stuff. I do healthy keto, where the fats come from eggs, grass-fed beef, and fatty fish, like salmon. I do have carbs, but only from green veggies. For example, my first meal at 11am today consisted of: 1 Burger (no bun or cheese) 1 Sunny side up egg, and 1/2 avocado on the burger, with a sliced onion and tomato. Instead of French fries, I had baked kale chips. I ended up eating only 1 meal today, since I was not hungry again by 7pm. A common critique of the keto diet is insufficient fiber, but I don't have this concern, because avocados, for such a small fruit, are rich in fiber. My experience on the keto diet and fasting intermittently has been a life saver, literally. As for sustainability, I am on 3 years.
2 years ago, was diagnosed with enlarged heart and enlarged aorta. Both considered "mild" I was told that I 'd be better off reducing calories, fat, sugar, and caffeine. I ate all the time, ate way more than a lot and ate foods that are bad for me. My caffeine came from black tea and diet coke. Cut the caffeine out. Stared eating berries low in sugar and raw veggies. Cut cheese to 1 serving per week. Went to eating 2000-2300 calories a day---but not as a "diet". Did it as a change in eating for life. I started at 300 pounds. At 200 at the moment. Also started to walk---was doing literally nothing. Up to 5 miles a day. So far heart and aorta isn't any worse. It can never get better.
IT’s recommended for Epilepsy patients, as it has achieved positive results reducing seizures to eliminating them. Certainly worth a try as seizures are serious and debilitating. There are a heap of foods beside bacon !!! Chicken fish veggies etc .
Hi Guys, love your videos. I am 71 and when I reached 261 lbs I went on a keto diet. I am now 221 and falling. My A1C has dropped out of pre-diabetic range and the edema in my legs has improved immensely allowing me to be more mobile. I had to cut back on the red meats and go with more chicken, turkey and fish to keep my LDL in check. I feel happier and healthier but am aware this diet cannot last forever cuz at some point you need to stop losing body fat or real trouble ensues. So plan is to hit my target weight then shift to a more normal type diet.
I also listen to Dr Steven GUNDRY a cardiologist in California and he says eat lean protein and lots of low glycemic vegetables, ditch anything made from flour and most fruit. I feel so much better when I do this and I’ve lost fat around the waist. 5’4 115 lbs and BMI is perfect! Also I must add I’m never hungry or have food cravings!
I did keto for a year and it made my life hell now for 3 yrs and counting . Gave me insulin resistance . My blood sugar flucuates and I never had those issues. Made me stressed , paniced , full of anxiety plus it can make you ocd . Your body thinks you are starving yourself . The negatives out weighed any positives I got from keto . I would have never done it ,if i knew then what I know now .
great! I am 6 weeks in, do you keep track of all you eat to make sure you getting enough of each. protein, fats etc or has that never been an issue, do you take any vitamins supplements?
@@jasonsteigleman260 No I do not keep track and have no issues. I eat "REAL""food nothing processed or Keto friendly. I do take some supplements that was recommended from my funchinting medicine doctor and nutrictiones.
Always entertaining and informative. I know you’re not fans but my wife and I committed to the carnivore diet for 30 days for its simplicity and we’re nearly through the third week. As far as we know, we’re healthy, in a normal weight range (albeit near the upper end in my case) and reasonably fit for a couple in their mid to late fifties but weight management has become an increasingly difficult struggle. Because we already maintained a fairly healthy diet, the transition was not at all difficult and we’ve both lost a little weight without the constant hunger we’d typically endure just to maintain weight. We know it’s not sustainable for us as we’re both chili heads with bushels of green chilis (probably a bit exotic at your latitude) we roast and keep on hand for use in almost everything we eat. I’m thinking we’ll accidentally adopt keto when we fall off the carnivore wagon and satisfy our chili fixes. Great videos, doctors!
I've been on a relaxed version of the Keto diet for 11 months, and have gone from over 16st to 12½st (103kg to 86kg) easily. I'm completely healthy & feel good. The diet is like no other diet, as you can eat as much protein, & plants as you want, and is soooo easy to maintain long term. I really want to encourage you all to give Keto a chance..... it's great. You can still eat carbs, a little bread etc, just reduce the amount ..... & cut out sugar, it's Beelzebub's food. Thanks for another great video 'Talking With Docs'. I'm really appreciating the effort you are making to help people improve their health 👍
I’ve been doing keto for a year, with intermittent fasting. I have lost 80 pounds so far, but the weight loss has really slowed down for me. Struggling to get off this plateau. I have found it fairly easy to stick to, and I have never felt better. I have tons of energy, improved mental clarity, and feel satisfied after a meal, no more cravings.
Yes getting rid of sugar and refined carbs does wonders for us. It really was the turning point in the obesity epidemic that started in the late 70s. The plateau is common and it becomes harder for your body to access your fat stores. If you simply restrict calories your body learns this and lowers your basal metabolic rate making it harder to lose weight. That's where the fasting comes in. The longer you fast the more your insulin drops and then your body turns to fatty acids as a source of energy that turn into ketones. Best of luck
Congratulations on your success! I found my weight loss stall went away when I increased how much I was eating. I had been intermittent fasting with a feeding window of 6 hrs, plus logging everything and sticking to strict macros. When I loosend up, increased by eating to 8 hours, and ate more I lost that last difficult 15lbs. I'm not at my "ideal weight" but I'm happy with what I see in the mirror and I'm comfortable in my own skin for the first time in 45 years. I'm having no trouble maintaining it. Good luck on your journey.
@@carolynallen597 Thank you… I have tried increasing calories, but no luck. 42 hour fasts have not worked either…. I may try pushing longer fasts as I am determined to get unstuck!
Google says that Grizzly Bears have lived up to 44 years in captivity. They typically live 20-25 years in the wild. Ursinologists believe Grizzly Bears could live well over 100 years on a diet of chicken wings.😉
19 years ago, my incredibly progressive (as it turned out) primary care physician put me on the Atkins Diet, which is a variant of keto. I was ready, and I followed it to the letter. Coupled with exercise (added towards the end of my weight loss journey), I lost 65 pounds. My total cholesterol was nearly halved (from 229 to 132), with LDL going from 175 to 60 and HDL increasing from 35 to 60. My triglycerides plummeted to 31. I was in the best health of my life at age 50 as a result. In the interim, whenever I got bored, lazy, or stressed and added sugar or other carbs back into my diet, these numbers deteriorated and getting back on the wagon straightened them out again. From my experience and personal research, one must be very careful and well-informed to maintain this sort of health on a vegetable-based diet, because a poorly executed vegetable-based diet can too easily become a sure road to Type 2 diabetes.
I have been on low carb diet for three years. I eat less than 20g carbs per day. My Hba1c dropped from 5.7 to 5. My skin has improved a lot, all ance on my back for years have gone. I no longer have insomnia which annoyed me for more than 10 years. Now my LDL is borderline high but my HDL is also very high, TG super low and c-reative protein zero. As Dr. Robert Lustig said, we should not only see LDL. We should also see TG/HDL ratio. He said if it's less than 1.5, there is no need to worry. My ratio is 0.5. I don't really care about my borderline high LDL.
Thanks for sharing. We would tend to disagree about the HDL. Many people feel the benefit of a high HDLis grossly outweighed by the danger of a high LDL. There is a lot we still don't understand about cholesterol but having an elevated LDL is still dangerous. Wishing you the best.
I do a "low carb" lifestyle change, not a "diet". At one time I was 340 lbs. 2 major back surgeries, gallbladder surgery, knee surgery, High BP (4 meds per day), type II diabetes (500 MG of Metformin X2 daily) and a massive amount of fat around my liver. Throw in the COVID of 2020 which was horrific on my body. In 2020 I had my last surgery, to my right shoulder, I was at 290 lbs. and was suppose to be a day surgery. My pain shot up as well as my blood sugar and BP and they were having a tough time controlling it due to my obesity. I decided after that at age 54 then I needed a change. I am 57 now. I cut all sugars, starches and most anything that I knew was spiking my glucose levels. Everyone's body is different. The oatmeal endorsed by the American Heart Association is a scam as well as others. I can't eat those "healthy fruits" everyone raves about like apples, bananas etc. I watched what I ate and monitored it via checking my glucose. What I found for me, is most any starches, sugars, fruits were spiking ,my glucose levels out of control. My proteins are mainly chicken and lean pork, On occasion red meat. My LIPID counts from cholesterol, high liver enzymes, Glucose levels etc all came down in normal ranges. I had an ultrasound on my liver a few months ago. That hard fat, leathery liver that will kill you was gone. My liver is back to normal sizing. My 57 yrs of bad eating, indulging, feasting have taken a toll on my body. I will forever live with the complications of weight and eating bad. Keto/low carb is not for everyone. You need to find your "lifestyle change". I watch commercials where a bubbly overweight female dancing and being happy taking her Diabetes med and think how Big Pharma want us to stay "big", imo. Oh what meds do I take now? one BP med and a few supplements, No Metformin etc. Do whats best for you, best regards. I am at 210 lbs and lost 80.
I have in the best health ever after previously being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and i was overweight. I lost a ton of weight while no longer being on diabetic meds, my A1C is terrific. I didn’t have to give up carbs i still ate bread i still ate pasta i still had pizza, but i had more control of my food consumption. I kept track of the time i eat and the amount i eat and make sure to eat fruits and vegetables as well. I am at my peak right now and not a single health issue to note 😊 i feel blessed. But reason for my comment is to each its own. I had tried the keto diet when i first started my weight loss journey and i almost died i was hospitalized for 1 weeks because of the keto diet. I have nothing against the keto way of life because everybody is not built the same i recommend people find what works for them. I know plenty of people who just can’t do keto but still healthy as can be. Let’s all strive to be the best and healthy version of ourselves regardless how we get there😊 i also forgot to add i exercise very frequently so that is the only thing thats a must for everybody to have a strong healthy body YOU NEED EXERCISE😅. The rest is just listening to your body and whatever works for you.
Doubts on this are only for people who have not tried it. Lots of benefits I have gained on this diet. I have never felt better in my entire life. My metabolism is back to teen age years. Im 54 I felt like im a superman. Very thankful to keto. Im now transitioning to carnivore. No more skin disease, inflammation, tooth decay, hypertension, acidity, ulcer( suffering for decades suddenly and miraculously gone in keto), gerd, brain fog. And by the way, my daughter had top her class for the first time in 15 years with an average of 97% and become very active after this diet. Youll never know until you tried yourself. I think the key on this diet is youll eliminate junk food and refined processed food and absolutely will never crave for it ever and youll gain full control of the food and not the food controlling you. I cannot even feel hunger on this diet. I eat till im full
I don't know why doctors and dieticians not knowledgeable about the ketogenic diet very often assumes people where eating bad unhealthy food before trying the keto diet. We don't need scientific studies to realize that other ways of loosing weight often leads to failure. Thinking about Atkins, 5-2, weight watchers, starving, hiit workout etc etc. The problem with carbs is that it drives up your blood sugar which leads to cravings when the b.s. levels drop. As everything in life, things aren't black or white. Healthy people having problems with their weight is very common. Many of them eat healthy, do workout and live a healthy lifestyle. Isn't it better to practice the keto/LCHF-diet and get their BMI low for an overall healthier outcome without risking the problems that comes with overweight?
You keep using the word "starvation". This is very misleading. I am on a ketogenic diet and have been for three years. I do not have cravings, I am not hungry. My a1c is now normal, an I have lost weight. My eating is very sustainable.
I've been doing that Virta program which is physcian monitored and already am down like 13 lbs over 4 weeks and dropping. Trying to stay away from Type 2 diabetes. So far so good.
I'm on keto not for weight loss, but for brain, mood, and joint benefits. A lot of people don't mention those things when it comes to it. It balances mood ( good for ADHD) great for joints, for people with bad arthritis, and good for opening up the blood brain barrier to increase gaba intake.
Keto makes complete sense to me. I am eating more meat than I have in previous years. I do feel better. But I am not total Keto. I just reduced my carbs and eat more grass fed beef.
I've been on a sugar restrictive lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet for a couple of years now, a great and comfortable way to make HbA1c drop to decent levels. All my important blood values are in order.
I'm taking this as a massive change in attitude by these docs. Until recently they said keto was a very bad diet that would only lead to bad things. Well done!
Hi Dave. So ... keto can help in the short term. Losing weight comes quickly and research has shown it does negatively affect your lipid profile and increases your risk of heart disease and cancer due to the saturated fat and animal protein. Getting rid of the sugar and refined carbs is the real win. Thanks for watching !
Thank you for your reply. I'll just say that after 5 years of keto life style my lipids are fine, you are correct about the weight loss of course the elimination of sugar and refined carbs play a big part but isn't that exactly what Keto is?
Wife and I both on a Keto type eating pattern for 3+ years. (Net carbs under 20 a day, macros roughly 55/35/10). We are in our mid-50’s. First to address some of the knocks by the doctors: 1. Zero problem sticking to the eating pattern. Enjoy food more and don’t miss those carbs or sugar. 2. Wife lost 35-40# and I lost 10# - both in first six months. Have kept it off for 3 years with ZERO measuring of food or counting calories. Health numbers improved drastically.. especially my wife. A1C from pre diabetic to ideal, Triglycerides down 65%, HDL way up. LDL went up for us both, but CAC scans would say that worry is much ado about nothing. Both of us feel tons better in terms of inflammation, brain fog, etc. Have done function healths battery of tests (130+ tests) with functional age coming out in the early 40’s on this eating style. Anecdotally know several others with similar experiences. We both get the business still from the family doctors about the eating pattern due to LDL being over 120. It’s crazy that the larger picture isn’t being looked at by the medical community. Look at the comments around here and I’m left scratching my head…. The typical way of eating and medical advice has our general population sicker than ever. If you need to improve your health this would be one of the first things I’d try.
For a "mostly plant" eating animal grizzlies sure have the most horrible carnivore breath. I do carnivore: beef, chicken, pork, fish, eggs, some cheese. Zero carbs. I call it anti-veganism - instead of "don't eat anything with a face" I eat only things with a face. I go off it and onto a "normal" diet for a few days after a month or so just so I don't starve off the gut flora which subsists on plant stuff and so I don't get scurvy or rickets or whatever. I have been doing this for six years now, and so far so good.
Keto is by far the easiest diet I’ve ever done. No more hangry, A1c is down, I lost 40 lbs, my gums stopped bleeding and I have energy again in the morning. If I do get overly tired and want to pig out, I’ll have some macadamia nuts and a hunk of cheese. And/Or some Lily’s sugar free chocolates. I made and served a keto cheesecake for Thanksgiving without telling my guests and they didn’t even notice that it was sweetened with monk fruit instead of sugar. I’ve yo yo dieted for decades and keto is the only way of eating that is sustainable for me. No way I could ever have stuck to a diet without binging on something for 10 months the way I have with keto. I love eating this way and the best part is my husband is no longer diabetic!!
For me keto is not a diet, it is a lifestyle. After reversing T2D, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, irritable bowel, and chronic fatigue, I have no desire to go back to following the food pyramid or plate or whatever the standard nuterional guidance is. I'm 63 now and made the change a decade ago. It has been sustainable for the IBS reversal alone. I don't miss having to urgently run to the toilet multiple times a day. If someone does the keto diet just to lose some weight, I agree carbohydrate addition and the lure of donuts will likely cause them to fail over the long term. Other people however may use keto as a tool to fix some health issues and then adapt to becoming metaboliclly flexible with the introduction of some carbs while remaining "low carb." Personally, I'm too scared of IBS coming back to try adding back hardly any of the the foods I used to eat. Please do a deeper dive into the use of "therapeutic nutritional ketosis" for brain disorders beyond epilepsy and metabolic disorders beyond diabetes. Perhaps you could interview Dr. Chris Palmer and Dr. Nicholas Norwitz. They both have interesting perspectives that your viewers could benefit from.
Keto for 3 years. Love it. My bloodwork is ideal. And my kiddo's new dating partner, who was firmly SAD balanced diet, absolutely loves eating at our house because of the wide range of whole food meals we make.
I've been on the carnivore diet for four months. My a1c dropped from 9.9 to 9.5 (still way too high) and I dropped from 207 to 204 pounds (I'm just over six-feet tall, average physique). I'm draconian with carbs as I never have more than 20g per day. I'm going to be researching fatty liver stuff next. The carnivore diet has worked wonders for some friends, but for me? Not so much. Love your videos and hope you keep them coming.
I suggest reading Mastering Diabetes by Cyrus Khambatta. This book talks about how saturated fat contributes to insulin resistance. Also, recommend The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet book by Donald Hensrud. Lost 30 pounds on this diet and blood sugars are much better. Also get to eat a serving fruit with each meal. Never realized how much I could enjoy fruit before reading these books.
I have been doing keto on and off for years. Most recently, I hit 225 and dropped to 195 in less than 3 months. I stuck to keeping my carbs below 20 grams a day, kept my daily caloric intake below 1500, and worked out twice a day. I hear all the time that’s it’s not healthy, but I personally haven’t had any issues. Sidenote: I’ve always been told by every doctor I’ve seen that you cannot reverse diabetes once you’re diagnosed with it. I’ve been diagnosed as prediabetic with my A1C hitting 6.4 and was told if I exceed that number, I’m considered diabetic for life even if I manage to sustain an A1C below 5.0
losing weight is the last reason that I do the ketogenic diet. I do it for the improved energy and improved mood that I experienced. decreased depression and decreased irritability. Better focus, less fatigue.
I am ketovore. One day I eat protein and veggies and some berries. The next day I eat carnivore. My numbers are great. I walk one day and the next day I do a video from Yes2Next. I eat 2 meals a day. I lose weight slowly and since February 2023 I have lost 25 lbs. I am no longer considered diabetic and off diabetic meds as well as high blood pressure meds. I only take Prilosec as I have acid reflux.
Keto in adults is hard; the ratio just don't work. For toddlers, it can work if you have a medical team that support the caregiver. I've seen mothers use a straight razor to cut a slice of a strawberry to give their child for daily carbs. But it can work. I remember a child that started when the drugs didn't work at age 2. The child was having around 200 to 300 epileptic seizures a day. Within a week, the seizures all but stop to one or two a day. They kept her on the diet for 2 and half years. The seizures where now weeks apart. They then transition to a Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) and on her 5th birthday, with her friends from school, she ate a small piece of birthday cake. This took place about 15 years ago. The women now can eat what she wants without the seizures.
Yo-yo’d here. I did keto for a year. I went from 235 to 175 lbs. My eczema went away. My insomnia went away. My type 2 went away. Downsides? I started getting a lot of grey hairs and experienced hair loss. Facebook groups told me to eat more protein but that didn’t help much. I got extremely sensitive to caffeine. After hitting my goal, I began eating carbs again and gained it back quickly. I gained it ALL back.
You negected to mention a very important component of the grizzly bear diet which is intermittent fasting, also known as hibernation. Good luck on the grizzly diet without incorporating a long fast! Like so many advocates of the ketogenic diet I am a doctor who experienced some health issues following Canada's food guide. Listening to my patients I learned that the most successful diet for them had been the Atkins diet. I thought, what the heck, I will try it myself for a few months... 8 years later I have been on a ketogenic diet and have what I think is optimal health. I recommend it to many patients, but carbohydrate addiction exists and if I sense that my patient has it , I often don't recommend keto as I don't wish to set them up for failure. Many of my patients have had spectacular success health-wise on this diet which addresses all features of the metabollic syndrome.
I have been on Keto for 8 months now. I have absolutely no problem adhering to it. In fact I like it. My problem is something else. High cholesterol big time. So I am about to change it and am wondering how horrible it would be, as I have cut back on the all the carbs and if I cut massive meat, I would be left with what horses eat. So I have to sit and figure out what to eat. So far this comes to mind. Greens, dairy, cruciferous vegetables, fish,, nuts. Meat once a week and eggs once a week and see if I can do it and what would that do to my cholesterol I will have to see.
I have advanced (heart failure, kidney failure, retinopathy, ect) type 2 diabetes and neither the keto diet or intermittent fasting has "reversed"it even if I've been doing it for a few years. I control my diabetes by taking insulin and eating a low carb and natural non processed food diet. I pretty much gave up on fruits also because they make my blond sugar rise too much and I have to then take a lot of insulin which makes me gain weight. The problem is really the insulin levels that are in the blood. Too much insulin leads too a lot of problems including obesity. I continue to do intermitent fasting also that seems to help my insulin résistance under better control. Any diet that is too extreme is not good for humans. We should stay as close to nature as possible. Took me a lifetime to understand that.😮
I was on a standard diet for most of my life.
I’ve been on a “keto” diet- yes a diet-meaning how I eat. That’s my diet. Low carb. High protein. For over 30 years!!! I was a collegiate athlete who was taught to carb load before races and I always felt bloated and sluggish- as a nutrition major I went on a binge of foods to see what made me feel energetic and great- turned out low carb was the answer. I became faster in the pool, better at distance running and cycling. I never looked back! As a dietitian and RN..I promote this healthy diet to all. I have been the same weight within 5 pounds since 1987. I am not any medications, no supplements…I don’t have any chronic conditions and have never been hospitalized. My lab work is always great. I actually had a comment on my last lab test that said “whatever you are doing-keep it up!” Low carb is easy to do- I mean why would someone want to purposefully feel sluggish. Ugh- no way. I have people tell me to “live a little- have cake” no way! The thought of feeling stuffed and sick and looking like everyone else of hard to imagine! I have one body and I have done it right. I will forever take care of it. Has anyone else breezed through menopause without a single symptom??!! Yep- me! I feel bad for people who try to something wrong with having a healthy diet. I have passed it along to me kids. My daughter is 22 and proudly boasts that she has never had a french fry! I’ve been told I have an eating disorder…haha nope. I think most everyone else does. Hmmm- I choose to eat a strawberry blueberry salad and my friend has red velvet cake with a side of chocolate chip cookie dough. I’ll take my eating disorder all day. Life is the best without carbs. Try it.
I reversed T2D, NAFLD, congestive heart failure on a carnivore lifestyle (not a diet... I'll never go back!). Also, I healed from 2 strokes (while they were putting stents in!) so quickly everyone said I was a miracle... Because of a therapeutic ketogenic 'diet'. I could not speak, read or write and I was paralyzed on my right side. Within two months I was able to go back to work as a database adminisrator at a large multinational bank. My HbA1c at the time of the strokes (I also had an MI), was 13%. Within 5 months of starting a carnivore diet it was 6.1. At the time of my CVAs, my ejection fraction (EF) was 40%. Less than 2y later, it was 60%, i.e. NORMAL!!! Never going to stop the carnivore lifestyle.
Would you be able to talk about what you ate and about fats?

Thank you for setting things straight. 🏆
Dr. Richard Bernstein - himself a Type 1 diabetic, nearing 90, who had to figure out for himself the safest and most effective way to control his glucose - explains in great detail why not limiting carbs is inviting trouble for all diabetics.

I have dione keto for 19 years for IBS and it has helped me and I will never stop.
Do you eat quinoa?
Well put, thank you. 🏆
👏👏👏 perfectly said!
Agree 100%. Also have GERD, told my gastro doc to "change your entire lifestyle", before she walked off. Not much help there...
You are way off base. Most people do not have insensitivities to corn and wheat or anything else other than maybe lactose. I had reflux issues too. I lost 50 lbs and it went away. I think it is from fat stored in your midsection and messing things up.

@@checkmecare no that’s not entirely true. A ketogenic diet is not healthy for anyone on earth. It is stupid.

Nothing wrong with eating bacon🎉
Bacon is one of life's great pleasures.
Actually the correct spelling is B1acon. 😀

"standard" diet? Highly processed foods on a daily basis, relatively large portions of unhealthy carbs, the occasional junk food binge,...? Awesome that it worked for you, but imo most people are probably better off just following the age old health advice without commiting to a restrictive diet.

I've been on keto for 1 year and lost 65lbs and feel great. I'm 70 and feel a lot younger . I never feel hungry. I eat a lot of meats and leafy greens. Yes the refined carbs and sugar are really the issue and the main reason these changes make people feel better. It's actually not the meat

Energy levels, sleep, and mental alertness have also improved. I'm keto for life, because I'd rather die than to go back on a carb-heavy diet and how it made me feel.
what food do u eat most is it fish beef pork bacon eggs

I was very much anti-diet (for myself) until I discovered that the keto diet was invented for epileptics; I'm epileptic. It's helped tremendously.
I know! I couldn’t believe that.
@@evanr5871 Absolutely wrong.

I don't like the word diet either. It makes us more anxious.🙃🙃
Me too. A1c went from 5.3 to 4.5. Trig/HDL from 3.1 down to 1.9

Congrats Claire. The time between meals serves most people well to help lower their insulin levels. Congrats
Your husband most likely has T1 diabetes
@@FetAlfredo hi, what makes you think that my husband has T1 diabetes?
Thanks.

Don’t take advice from skeletor.
I lost 70 pounds and dropped my A1c to 5.2 in 6 months on keto (lots of meat). Now that’s what I call results!

@@osmanysvaldesg.3014Yes. I added carbs in the form of fruit, rice, beans and cut back on the red meat.

I began with keto 2,y4month ago, lost 22kg,no insulin, no skin rash, now on 95%carnivore. I'm feeling better and better now.

For example, my first meal at 11am today consisted of:
1 Burger (no bun or cheese)
1 Sunny side up egg, and 1/2 avocado on the burger, with a sliced onion and tomato.

The longer you fast the
more your insulin drops and then your body turns to fatty acids as a source of energy that turn into ketones. Best of luck
Congratulations on your success! I found my weight loss stall went away when I increased how much I was eating. I had been intermittent fasting with a feeding window of 6 hrs, plus logging everything and sticking to strict macros.
Keto is great! 3 1/2 years now. My health has changed dramatically. This is a lifestyle change, definitely, but it delicious!
Keto has done wonders for me. Beware of big pharma and some in the medical profession.
Embarking on my ketogenic diet journey and Ive chosen HyperKeto. Hoping it helps me achieve my health and fitness goals hehehe
I’ve been on it for years, all my numbers are great and I don’t crave crap.
You keep using the word "starvation". This is very misleading. I am on a ketogenic diet and have been for three years. I do not have cravings, I am not hungry. My a1c is now normal, an I have lost weight. My eating is very sustainable.
Starvation is mentioned in relation to the origin of the keto diet where prolonged periods of not eating lead to ketone formation
Glad it works for you
I've been on a sugar restrictive lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet for a couple of years now, a great and comfortable way to make HbA1c drop to decent levels.
They seem conflicted to me as well. 🦘🦘@@daveboss2994
Wife and I both on a Keto type eating pattern for 3+ years. (Net carbs under 20 a day, macros roughly 55/35/10). We are in our mid-50’s.
First to address some of the knocks by the doctors:
Best of luck. Thanks for watching!
@@michelep.7249 I appreciate this. I have the book from the Mayo Clinic, but I will try to find the book by Cyrus Khambatta ASAP.
Thank you for sharing
Wow interesting
I have been carnivore for 4 years not as a diet but as a lifestyle change I was keto for 3 years before that. Working great for me
Interesting
There are people who simply noted that vegetables would mess their stomach up. Fiber messed them up also.
I've been eating a very sustainable keto carnivore "diet" for most of 2023 and am feeling better than I have in most my adult life.
