You probably know this, but in waterproof match cases, the birthday candles that can't blow out make cheap small firestarter in wet or windy conditions. Cheers
I have couple of K&M brass match cases and they look really nice but the Exotac is as function (actually easier to use) and considerable less cost. Matches are often overlooked as a fire lighting method. Great video mate.👍👍
I think the Titan Lighter really shines in winter. In very cod conditions butane doesn't gasify. Petrol will however. One reason so many GI's swore by Zippo.
@@RobEvansWoodsman They're "buy it once" items...that you take a long and never use - because you've got other more fun options - but you might be glad of them one day - and on that day, they need to work. So expensive is relative.
Since the Exotac Match Cap is so expensive, I've used an empty vitamins tube from the local supermarket... not as sturdy, but almost free, considering the tubes get thrown out in the trash.
I carried duct tape and a small sewing kit for years camping with kids. I used the repair kit way more in those days, fixed a lot of torn clothing an burn holes in rainflys that were too close to the sparks from a campfire etc. I think the ripspool would be a handy and high quality way to carry the essentials...although you can do just as functional with a self-made kit.
I smoked for 35 plus years and on the job site we were not allowed to have pressurized fuel / like a Bics lighter on us what so ever. So as a smoker we had to have matches or a Zippo lighter. I had and used a Zippo for a very, very long time, I have lots of Zippos. Zippos leak all the time, all fuel Zippos. If someone carried one constantly like I did they would know. As a smoker I had them everywhere, they were always topped off. They All evaporated their fuel in a very short time, so I would have a small fuel can in my work truck, my boarding room, my home, my work shed. A Zippo could not be relied on to ignite if sitting for a short time, even less on a hot spell. I sure wish that fuel canister lighter like the Exotac you have was around 40 years ago. I could of save thousands on the cost of fuel. LOL Now I'm to poor to buy myself an Exotac fuel lighter.
l also carried a zippo for years and sometimes i'd get a bit of leakage in my jeans pocket that would give me a rash on my leg, that's when i switched to disposable bic .
These two vids were interesting. How about that exotac deal that has the striker and the Ferro rod that screws together. I like that one as a back up for its size. My emergency fire kit fits in a small medicine bottle. Contains waterproof matches, mini bic, exotac fire starter, and wet fire tinder. Lid secured with tape to prevent water leakage. Should be sufficient.
That little ferrorod is only good for fine very combustible material like cotton balls, char matterial and plant downs which are unlikely to be dry off the plant. Stick with something bigger.👍
Dental swabs come as far as I know in 3 sizes smallest is pretty narrow got mine from Ebay UK PS here's another thought remove 3 or 4 matches from the Matchcap replace with one of those 'Magic' birthday cake candles and in nasty weather the candle can be inserted into the bundle then lit 😇
For me the best are the tablet natural for the barbecue, the Italian name is Diavoline super light weight and super economic, Bic and ferrocerio xxl...
That zippo fuel canister pairs well with that Titan lighter, and would keep it running for a very long time. Exotac makes a great product, sootch has a discount code if your not using one 😉 👍
I may have mentioned before about splitting fat-wood, if split too thinly, more surface area is exposed - which I find tends to allow the volatile compounds (that make fat-wood burn so well) to evaporate much sooner - than if the sliver of fat-wood is left as large as possible until the point of use. Then, when it is split, shaved or scrapped, will expose fresh surfaces with more "volatiles" - be more likely to catch light and burn for longer. Exactly the same reasoning why I find Maya Dust to be almost useless after a few months, especially if you carry it in a pocket or top of a rucksack in warm weather!
Thankyou as always Rob, good idea with the fire cord I got the same stuff off Amazon, never thought of combining the strands. I love petrol lighters but once again your right , they evaporate pretty quick, I know I bugged ya before about Falknivens but for no good reason I want one, how about the Forest S1 x b? or ya could just say save ya money fool.
@@RobEvansWoodsman Thanks Rob I saw your vids on the six and liked the re handle you did , ok will check the F1 x , did wonder if the coating was worth the extra
Hey Rob You are on about life hacks and your jet lighters.... Have you bought refillable jet lighters and have you found they don't seem to work as well using "normal" butane gas for eg clippers. There is a 'dew hickey' I will find the name and link for you, that allows you to refill lighters from your low jet boil canisters. The gas being more suited for the jet lighters. I hope this is something you can use. Mig
l buy cheap ones from homebargains, about £1 for two. l find that a jet lighter is crap for tighting twigs but better for lighting tinders like fungus, feather sticks, shavings, bark, matches are best for twigs in my opinion .
Plenty of orange goodness there Rob!
I have Nick to thank for the orange toys!
Love Exotac! Great video Sir Rob! Super practical review!

I am with you on jet lighters Rob. Home Bargains are selling 2 for 89p .Oh for the days of the old fashioned Swan Vestas!!!!
Thoes are the ones I use, good old home bargains , you can make a ration pack up for £3!!

I have a black KandM and a brass Cabela's one which is a threaded cap.
You know I love my matches, can't beat a bit of nostalgia too
Hi Rob, another good video, match container looks worth investigating.
I do like a matchsafe.
Good information as always. Great video.

I use Ecotac tools a long time and I find is a great option for fire lighting in the nature. Great
Always good to watch something by you mate. They look like quality bits of kit.
Cheers mate.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea to buy expensive kit but plenty do.

Tight arse!!🤣🤣
I believe exotac designs the match safe with a larger base, you should be able to fit more matches if you put them all in head down.
The smaller matchcap is like this the XL is the same diameter all the way.
Rob,just to say I would not use any of them. I take army match's and a lighter. And also take more than one.
I have a cheap jet lighter where the head is set at a 45 degree angle. Makes it really easy to aim the flame.
Nice wee show and tell Rob. I like the exotac form factor and design but I think they are overpriced for what they are, I am a tightarse though 😁

Some people scoff at the price of the Fire Sleeve. Fifteen dollars for something to protect a $2 lighter. But how much is your life worth.

The handle on Mine was just too thin do I rehandled it, I prefer the F1x as it comes, don't bother with the black blade either.
