    I know that the Lamborghini engines weren’t exactly known for their reliability, but damn that is a beautiful sound. Cool shot of Michael right at the end too.

      Apparently Senna much preferred the Lamborghini engines to the Ford or Honda engines and told Ron Dennis to use them instead of Ford, Ron didn't listen unfortunately.

    • @kungfucow547
      @kungfucow547 2 года назад +26

      @@acreativename7999 Not Honda, *not a chance* . Listen, Senna preferred it to the customer Ford (which was one of the least powerful engines at the time) but that isn't saying much. You also need to understand this once and for all: Lamborghini's V12 had just 10 points in total from 80 races in 5 seasons (1989-1993). Statistically speaking it clearly had little to show for. It was powerful.... BUT... it also was heavy, bulky, developed too much heat, was thirsty and was above all unreliable.
      Ron Dennis only assessed it because he couldn't broker a deal with Renault for 1994, couldn't get Cosworth works V8's (Benetton had sole rights on them) and wasn't going to go to Ferrari (who most likely wouldn't have provided their engines anyway for whatever he hypothetically offered them). The only other V10/V12 at this time was the Yamaha V10, which had scored zero points with Tyrrell in 1993.
      The ONLY way McLaren would have signed for Lamborghini engines in 1994 was if an *all-new* engine was developed for 1994. Unfortunately this all hinged upon *Chrysler* (owner of Lamborghini at that time) committing to F1 and *financing* the new engine. Lamborghini themselves were on the brink of bankruptcy themselves so they weren't going to finance it. Now, as it were Chrysler were in dire straits themselves and were actually looking to sell Lamborghini to the highest bidder. In the mid 90's hardly anybody had the money following the mid 90's economic recession. In the end the only company willing to buy Lamborghini was the Malaysian company owned and managed by the son of the dictator Suharto (Tony Suharto). Chrysler themselves would have kicked the bucket if not for the Daimler-Chrysler merger later.
      Chrysler showed no interest in F1. Lamborghini *couldn't* finance it on their own. Hence they pulled the plug and didn't supply any team i 1994.
      The reality is that had McLaren used the 5 year old Lamborghini V12 in 1994 they would have fared even worse than the Peugeot they used - which was derived from the 1992 and 1993 LeMans 24 Hour winning Peugeot 905 Group C racing car.
      And whether McLaren used the Peugeot or Lamborghini didn't matter. Senna couldn't wait to drive for Williams following the domination of Mansell in 1992 and Prost in 1993.

    • @rigel8755
      @rigel8755 2 года назад +8

      @@kungfucow547 That test was actually sandbagged without the knowledge of the drivers, because Ron had already signed with Peugeot and didn't want to go back as the Lamborghini deal wasn't very trustful neither profitable in a long term after all. The engine straight up blew up one time, but all drivers including Senna loved the handling and speed with that engine, it was way faster than with the Ford engine. Remember that the test was *intentionally sandbagged without the knowledge of the drivers* and it was *still* faster than the Ford V8. It wasn't reliable, but it married to this car just right.

Both of them highly praised the engine after the tests because it was so much faster than the same car with the Cosworth even though Ron Dennis, according to Martin Whitmarsh, had told the team to run the "Mclambo" with a full tank in order to limit the performance of the car since Ron Dennis already had a deal with Peugeot lined up for the 1994 season. Although the Lamborghini V12 was lighter than the customer Ford V8 engines McLaren were using in 1993, given the complexity of a V12 engine, with more components to go wrong than a V10 or V8, it would have been a bigger risk I feel. Sure McLaren would have been a better home for the Lamborghini engine than Larousse, but what good would the pace be if it can't finish races? After all, the old motorsport cliché is "to finish first, first you have to finish," and Ron Dennis (as shown by how he abruptly terminated the Peugeot contract after 1994) probably wouldn't have taken kindly to an engine which doesn't finish enough races, even if podiums or even wins were possible when it did.

    The Lambo V12 was a nice idea for McLaren at that time but I don't think they would have raced it. They had experienced the extra weight of engine and fuel from the Honda V12 (McLaren wanted to keep their V10 but Honda insisted). Also, Lamborghini weren't big enough to invest properly in an F1 programme in the way Honda or Renault had. The Peugeot deal promised much but the company didn't fully back the programme hence McLaren going for Mercedes with their "win at all costs" attitude.

    That lambo engine was so unreliable they should have stretch ford partnership or kept Senna in 94 they act like Peugot engine sucked it was unreliable but powerful smh even if Ford was with Benneton if Senna stayed Ford would have loved to give McLaren a top spec engine instead history happened

    Too bad McLaren didn't go for Lamborghini engines. Maybe Senna would have stayed and destroyed the annoying Williams

      McLaren already had a contract with Peugeot for 1994, and Chrysler axed the Lambo project for 1994 anyway, so the MP4/9 would have ended up powered by Ron Dennis pushing the car making engine noises.

    This engine was the latest spec from Lamborghini and some said that it was even more powerfull than the Ferrari V12, unfortunatelly stupid Dennis choose the Peugeot Lm engine....
