I always thought it made a lot of sense that Redstone would be powering a different color light than it is physically and that is why its put around like that, it was janky looking sure, wasn't a problem really. But now the light is red for some reason, when it doesn't actually make sense that it would have to be red at all since Redstone powers other lights as well. So it feels like people complained enough to the point the games makes less sense at the end of the day, I don't really care what one is actually used though as long as the actual light put off is the same. Also the new one does look better cuz of the janky outline before like you said.
@@jackman5840Well, redstone generally glows red when powered. It can power block providing yellow light, but it itself provides red light and this is a torch of said red light, so it should be red. I don't see how this makes less sense, but you do you.

I think I could get used to it though.

For those people wanting to understand computer graphics a bit more: Inverted means the *normals are pointing inwards* instead of outwards. The reason this is important is because your GPU is optimized for drawing surfaces (triangles) and we don't have to do fancy math to get this effect.

the thing is, glowing red things have yellow in the middle as the more glowy part. like thats just how red lights look. the white and grayish red in the middle looks wrong because when we look at a glowing red light that is implied to be firelike, we expect it to be like fire with orange and yellow, not like a red LED.
you're thinking of things that are glowing due to heat. This redstone torch model is probably supposed to look more like a neon light than a fire. Neon lights are more white near the center, just like this new texture.

I know the old programmer art was exactly that, programmer art, but i can see notch in his basement making redstone torches like "eh, dont feel like redoing the texture, I'll just add a red glow so they look red" and never getting around to changing it later. An explanation for how this new model works: It uses an inverted red cube around the tip of the torch. Normally, cubes have culling that hides the texture when viewed from the inside, meaning if the you were to place the camera inside a cube, you wouldn't see the cube's texture surrounding your view, you'd just see nothing. However, when you invert a cube, this effect is inverted as well, and the textures only render when viewed from the inside. Surrounding a cube with a slightly larger inverted cube is a common technique used to create outline effects like this.
I'd be fine with it if it was actually the color of redstone dust. The pinkness just... Doesn't look right. And what's the deal with the one strip of actual red along the bottom?
that red along the bottom is to make the glow effect work. That "glow" is just an inverted cube, so without those extra red pixels you'd see the brown stick part clipping into the cube. Also, the pinkness is to make it seem bright. Look up pictures of red LEDs, you'll see that the middle is pink or white and only the outer glow is pure red.
The only thing I don't like about the new one, is the fact it's massive compared to every other torch now I want the red outline gone, and the torch just red, OR, I want the outline there but not a complete square, cut out the corners on it and boom it's nearly identical to the old torch, but actually red like it should have been from the very beginning
@@commander3494 But it still looks bigger. The cube makes it look bulky compared to the old design despite it technically being smaller. This is a very common optical illusion which is taken into account in many aspects of life including the font you're reading right now but somehow mojang didn't think of it.

At least the original Redstone torch texture will be preserved in the "Programmer's Art" texture pack. But I still like the new texture. Somehow I can already see myself telling my kids how Minecraft was in its prime.

I think people don't like the new texture because nothing else in the game has this system to it. The old redstone torch was made with an existing system that was already established; placed items can have intersecting 2d planes. Tall grass, flowers, saplings, etc. The redstone torch did as well, except in a cube, so it made sense. I think the new texture is cool, but it still takes an approach that is different than the other torches. There's red pixels on the shaft of the torch and there's a rendered cube on it which no other textures have. It makes it look very sterile and un-minecrafty. It sounds stupid that this is considering debating in a comment, but Mojang has spent over 10 years making the game world very precisely, so whenever a slight little thing like this steps outside that world, it breaks peoples illusion a little bit. I think if they reduced the opacity of the cube and made it a darker red, it'd be reminiscent of the glowing effect that entities have. Or, they could make it like the slime block- a block that has a transparent outer shell and an inner opaque one. That would stay in-world and probably make more sense. Or it could look horrible, I don't know.
Yeah, I don’t know. I liked how the original redstone torch had the red frays surrounding it, making it a lot more visually interesting. Those frays are also 1:1 with the pixels on the torch, making it more even. The new one looks like a corporate redesign.

The only thing I don't like about the new one, is the fact it's massive compared to every other torch now
I want the red outline gone, and the torch just red, OR, I want the outline there but not a complete square, cut out the corners on it and boom it's nearly identical to the old torch, but actually red like it should have been from the very beginning

@@commander3494 But it still looks bigger. The cube makes it look bulky compared to the old design despite it technically being smaller. This is a very common optical illusion which is taken into account in many aspects of life including the font you're reading right now but somehow mojang didn't think of it.

At least the original Redstone torch texture will be preserved in the "Programmer's Art" texture pack. But I still like the new texture. Somehow I can already see myself telling my kids how Minecraft was in its prime.

I actually kinda like it even tho it's not as nostalgic but I think people will come around to it, it kind of looks more like an electrical bulb and not just what it was before
I think people don't like the new texture because nothing else in the game has this system to it. The old redstone torch was made with an existing system that was already established; placed items can have intersecting 2d planes. Tall grass, flowers, saplings, etc. The redstone torch did as well, except in a cube, so it made sense.
I think the new texture is cool, but it still takes an approach that is different than the other torches. There's red pixels on the shaft of the torch and there's a rendered cube on it which no other textures have. It makes it look very sterile and un-minecrafty.
It sounds stupid that this is considering debating in a comment, but Mojang has spent over 10 years making the game world very precisely, so whenever a slight little thing like this steps outside that world, it breaks peoples illusion a little bit. I think if they reduced the opacity of the cube and made it a darker red, it'd be reminiscent of the glowing effect that entities have. Or, they could make it like the slime block- a block that has a transparent outer shell and an inner opaque one. That would stay in-world and probably make more sense. Or it could look horrible, I don't know.

I liked how the original redstone torch had the red frays surrounding it, making it a lot more visually interesting. Those frays are also 1:1 with the pixels on the torch, making it more even.

Eh, the old one felt kind of lazy compared to the new one, it was a strange looking red outline around a normal torch. I also have no clue what you mean by “corporate redesign”.

I don't know what the old redstone torch was supposed to look like, but the new one looks like a signal bulb, which makes so much more sense for redstone components! I like that change!
The new redstone torch should be renamed to "glowing meatball on a stick" because that is what it looks like.

unironically i love the new redstone torch, it looks super cool, like an actual magical torch made of redstone and not just another stick on fire like the other torches. it deserves to look different imo

the brightest dot on the torch top(bottom right corner) is white on both the normal torch and the blue torch, but it's pink on the red torch.
