"space did something cool"
you know how little that narrows it down, right

Mad props to Red for saying how rude it is to film strangers in public and for not caring that this video is different from the others
Absolutely one more reason I love this channel.
This was the first time I heard an American RUclipsr say that it's rude. And I wish it would be something that's addressed more often.
(Especially since a lot of people somehow assume it's fine to film the public in countries where the laws are more privacy focused. And that's a curse we got primarily from American vloggers)
@@qtluna7917 pretty hard to convince someone something's bad or unethical when that's how they put food on the table.
@@Postalpacifist I didn't know tourists need to film to survive.
@@qtluna7917 I don't know how you got that from what I said, but fine, I'll explain: the rude people filming strangers use the film to create content, which they then use in various ways to make the money numbers go up in their bank account, and then they exchange the money for food. All clear so far? OK, so then when we tell them that doing the first step is rude, they're not going to be inclined to listen because without the first step the other steps don't happen in the same way and that then means more work is necessary to figure out another way to obtain food.
@@Postalpacifist Okay, okay, so you are telling me, that my observation of all the people (often with American accents, though not exclusively), instantly taking their phones out filming people in Europe or Asia without consent just because they are wearing traditional clothing in public. That all of those are content creators that LIVE off that influencer money? Especially when that those photos and movies are not commercially usable without a release form/prior consent, and commercial use will hit you with a fine higher than was you would get from said content?
Or to shorten that again:
I didn't know tourists need to film to survive.
The sheer jubilance in Red's voice retelling the epiphany of "this is my (and Blue's) channel, I do not have to conform to the restrictions I once put on myself to justify what I do" is absolutely delightful.
You can talk about anything!
Both Red and Blue should just do “I Wanna Talk About” videos! I’m totally down for that!!!
This needs to happen. We'd get to hear about so many interests from both their sides that simply cannot be related to history or myths.
Yeah, but like half of Blue's videos would be talking about domes... :)

For future reference: Filipino culture has the Bakunawa, which is a dragon that causes lunar eclipses. It's a dragon known for eating the moon. There's all sorts of traditions. Filipinos usually make a lot of noise with pots and pans to keep the moon from being swallowed. There's a lot of different variations on the Bakunawa because the Philippines has tons of different tribes. Feel free to deep dive into it!
Yeah, I thought it's pretty weird Red didn't even mention Bakunawa
Seems to be similar or inspired by Rahu and Ketu of Hindu mythology.
Pretty similar to Chinese mythology actually, but the dragon eats the sun
@@LineOfThy Southern Slavic mythology also has dragons that sometimes attempt to fight the Sun
Such is the universal curse of researching for RUclips creators. Sources will be tricky to find before a deadline, but only once they publish the video will the hitherto unseen experts or niche and obscure sources become more clearly visible.

Nah, she's clearly both at once and only RARELY has the opportunity to have both sides out at once.
I feel like Red’s noted interest in space, myths, and chaos will one day lead to her remembering her past as a god like being who wreaked havoc across the world. Can’t wait!😄

I live in Salt Lake City, right near the path of the total eclipse. What's interesting is that the eclipse happened on the exact day of my little sister's wedding, and they had no idea they scheduled it during an eclipse until a month beforehand (they had set a date almost a year in advance). It was extremely cool, and a lot of my extended family that traveled here got to see their first eclipse ever.
Gotta love happy accidents like that
I'm a science teacher who's definitely going to use this video next time I'm teaching eclipses. The clear passion about the subject, the way you weave it into a story and link to the broader themes, and such a clear explanation of the complexities of orbital dynamics all go together to make it a superb resource. Thank you.
Oh and I enjoyed the video very much as well.
She does an incredible job at passionately explaining things in a very real way that a wide variety of people can connect with.
Is this the start of a new era of OSP, where Red can just talk about whatever without needing an excuse? Because I'm here for it.

There's an story in an anthology I read when I was little. (Book of Nightmares, presented by Bruce Coville... story was "Drawing the Moon" by Deborah Millitello.)
It comes to mind now and then...
It's very telling that even in a video on astronomy, i.e. classical Science, Red still weaves a story. And I love it.
Tbh I've always avoided solar eclipses (or, not gone out of my way to see them) due to a sneaking suspicion that it would give me a full existential breakdown. But Red's speech about the unbelievable temporary cosmic coincidence of it all has convinced me that the experience may be worth the meltdown, after all 😅
My dad drove hours and hours to see the eclipse in its totality, and he's already rearranged his work schedule for next year to witness it from the best possible place in the country. As you might imagine, he's really into space stuff too. So I associate "people excitedly going off about space" with good childhood memories. This video was a delight
so uh,...where would that be?
I hope he enjoys himself! It passes over me, so I don't have to go anywhere, but it might be difficult to see with my current job. Good luck to your dad!
well, my understanding is that Erie PA is going to be very close to the point of maximum totality. I think it passes just offshore in the lake for the longest time in totality. Knowing my luck there's gonna be a snow storm or something for it while I'm up there
I hope you and your family are well.
Okay, so the video starts with red going: “I couldn’t find a myth.”
Then I look at the time stamp, and see this video is 22 minutes long.
Basically, this will be good.
I drove 8 hours to Tennessee to see the last total solar eclipse, and it was for the current state of the country an astoundingly universal experience. Everyone there was just a person gaping at the sky - no political or religious divisions or anything like that. And when the sun came back we all spontaneously cheered and clapped like we’d won the whole world ❤
I was driving through Tennessee during that one, but I didn’t get to stay and watch it bc I’m a truck driver and was moving a load to Ohio at the time. So it felt serendipitous to pass right through the area of totality, since I started the morning out of Mooresville, NC. Around noon, Knoxville was looking slightly dim, and I started wondering what was happening, till I remembered where I was. From there I headed north to Kentucky, keeping me in that area till around 1:30 pm, crossing in the mountains. The sky was crystal clear, but it suddenly turned dark, as if I was going through a tunnel, and my night lights automatically turned on. For those few minutes, I felt like we experienced the clockwork of the universe firsthand. It was my first total eclipse and I’ll never forget it.
One of my favorite things during the eclipse was how the shadows changed! All the tree leaf shadows turned into cresents and I went around photographing as many different shapes as possible.
I love when space does something
Just not when it throws an earth-destroying asteroid at us
@theanimeunderworld8338 oh no
And when it does its cool!
Wait till you hear about CMEs
except for when a solar storm hits us, space is a great .
1. Red, please do this more often. You and Blue nerding out about stuff is the whole reason I watch this channel. Im very sure a sizeable portion of us would continue to watch absent any myth talk.
2. This might be the first time ive ever actually seen the fsce behind the sketch. Cool
re. 2: They don't do it often, but both of them have shown their faces before. It _has_ been a while tho.
Yeah the one time I can remember was the April fools’ apology video
Yes!
Okay, so I live in Richfield, Utah and I just want to tell my solar eclipse story.
So I woke up and my family and I got ready. We went to my town's city park and set up a blanket with sleeping bags. We sat there and our weather was absolutely beautiful for viewing. Not a single cloud. When it came close to totality, the highway we were by went silent, so did all the birds and other animals. When totality hit, everyone held their breath, you could just feel it in the air. Our totality passed and the colective cheer richocheted off the surrounding mountains and we could hear the other small towns nearby also celebrating. One thing to mention was how cold it actually got. My whole family was huddled under blankets, jackets, coats, and, of course, the sleeping bags. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and one that everyone should make a point to enjoy at least once. As Red said, its a good reminder that we are all just somewhat intelligent creatures on a hunk of rock hurtling through the giant vacuum we call space. Have a wonderful day. 😊
I'm loving the chapter titles in this thing... "I invoked the wrath of Zeus ONE TIME" and *"The day of reckoning"* are the best.
I live in a zone where we only got 30% if this recent one, and it rained buckets, so we couldn't see a thing. But we're getting ABSOLUTE TOTALITY next year. I don't care if it's a thunderstorm, I am ABSOLUTELY going out there. Already got four pairs of eclipse glasses!
"I Invoked Zeus's Wrath ONE TIME" is a great chapter name.
HA! I hadn't even Noticed that, thanks for pointing it out!
It kinda sounds like a light novel title lol
This cosmic phenomenon appears to have eclipsed our usual OSP content, and I'm all for it!
Heyooooo
@@Vinemaple Heyooooo!
I made an impulse decision to drive across country in 2017 to view the solar eclipse. I went for over 24 hours without sleep, suffering from massive panic attacks and just being downright miserable in the summer swampy heat. And man, when the eclipse hit while I was in the path of totality....I have never felt so awestruck. So small and insignificant. It stands, still, as the single most beautiful natural event I have ever seen, and the fact that I now currently live in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse brings me a joy I cannot describe! Hooray for space!
I saw it at Bryce Canyon, Utah, and it was freaking AMAZING. Everyone started clapping when annularity was achieved.
RED.
You just literally made a life long dream of mine come true.
There's very little chance I will *ever* get to see even a partial eclipse, and you managed with this video to make the entire thing into a full-on ADVENTURE.
I can't even articulate how this made me feel -
I've also never heard a clearer, better explanation of the math side of eclipse season, AND you top it all off with wonderfully thoughtful commentary on our place in the cosmos too???
I'm watching this again on my birthday as a gift to myself.
Do it, and have a happy birthday in advance my dude (dude in the californian sense of the word)
Never say never about the eclipse dream! You can still plan to see an eclipse! I didn’t think I’d see one either, but I saw a total eclipse a few years back!
There are at least two solar eclipses per year, and while a *total* eclipse visible from a given spot is quite rare and brief, most eclipses are visible as at least some degree of partial eclipse over a good chunk of the day side of Earth, so the chances are good that you've seen a partial eclipse and didn't know it was happening. Fortunately, if you know a partial eclipse is happening, the equipment needed to view it is quite simple: literally anything that can act as a pinhole camera, including a curled finger and thumb casting a shadow with a hole in it on the ground. The shadow of a tree will generally have lots of little holes between the leaves, and while the image gets jumbled by the sheer number of holes, each hole will cast its own image of the sun. All you need to know is when to look, and if you know, you can blow your friends' minds.
@@JonBrase pretty sure the last time I did see one was in the 1980s in Texas; I was in 3rd grade lol
It's mostly a matter of timing, but I can at least keep my eyes open (metaphorically) for the next chance!
@@BeryllahawkWikipedia has a chart of all eclipses in the 21st century! You can check there whether/when there will be one that's visible from where you live. For example, the next partial eclipse in my area is in March 2025, and I might be able to catch a total eclipse in August 2026

the Interstellar music over the eclipse sequence coupled with Red's phenomenal narration was the best thing I've watched all year

I'd love to see Red talk more about all the cool stuff in space, or whatever she's passionate about, whether there's a myth attached to it or not. The cosmos definitely work in mysterious, beautiful ways. I wish I could've seen this eclipse. I remember the one from 2017 and it was so surreal.
Oh, I would love that.
Well said.
I saw that one too. It blew my mind.
Same tbh. I even noted the shadows cast from between the leaves of the trees in my yard also showed the eclipse!
I got to see the ring of fire in Albuquerque, at the hot air balloon festival. It was stunning, and something I’m not soon to forget. It’s surprising there’s not more prominent myths and stories about eclipses. They’re a marvel of nature

I’m from Niterói (close to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and dragged my family to Natal in order to see it. Always wanted to watch a solar eclipse, but never had the chance.
Natal is one of the last places it would be possible to watch it 100% from land and is one of the Brazilian capitals with the least amount of rain and, after 3 clear weather and hot days the day of the eclipse was… cloudy!
The sun appeared and disappeared between the clouds throughout the eclipse. Around 8 minutes before the peak, a huge cloud covered it... and left 1 and a half minutes before. It was beautiful. I’m really happy you could see it too.
i had a similar experience! unfortunately, i was nowhere near the annular range, so i had to settle for a partial eclipse - though i am only a few minutes away from april's totality.

@sossololpipi9633 A few years ago was the first eclipse over North America in my lifetime, and it was only a partial eclipse in my area. It was still so amazing! You're goddamn right. Thanks for the idea, Red. We had a wonderful time watching it.
Somehow I’m crying at the fact that humans are lucky enough to evolve at the right time to also experience eclipses and at the fact that the sky cleared enough even if just for a moment for Red to be able to capture it
Or, are eclipses required for intelligent life to happen? If anybody writes a story describing about why eclipses are a great filter, let me know, I want to read it.
@@Scynthius137 There is a short story whose name I can't recall right now which somewhat does the opposite.
The planet is in a star cluster and is close enough to 5 stars that essentially one is always visible sometime so there is no night or full darkness. At best they get twilight because one of the stars is a dim red dwarf. Also, becuase their sky is dominated by a bunch of suns they don't see any stars other than their suns, because the sky is never dark enough.
But every few thousand years there is a full eclipse where all the suns are covered and people go insane, burning civilization to the ground. The story follows a journalist and a bunch of scientists who think darkness is the reason this happens (btw the only man-made light source they have are torches). The stars are mentioned in some religious texts but they are expecting to be able to see like a few dozen or something.
When the full eclipse happens they see thousands of stars and go insane by the revelation of their irrelevance in the universe.

I remember an eclipse where because it was passing over our city directly, several people either skipped school or simply hung out at home to watch the eclipse. I remember sitting there, sun glasses on, watching as a total eclipse happened. I love space stuff
I was hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2017 during that solar eclipse, and my parents came up to pick me up off the trail in Pennsylvania to drive me halfway down the country to go see the totality. Easily one of the coolest things I've ever seen, despite clouds threatening to blot the whole thing out. We were lucky; on our mountaintop the clouds parted about 20 minutes before the eclipse and stayed parted the rest of the day.

Hey, I just wanted you to know Red that my brother and I actually had your myth video on Huitzilopochtli playing during the eclipse a few weeks back, and that honestly your vids and us just chatting and joking about eclipse myths and blood sacrifices with each other just made the whole event of waking up before the sun rose and driving for hours just to get to the center of annularity even more special. So thank you!
The 2024 solar eclipse just passed yesterday. I was lucky enough to be in the path of totality and it was truly something special. I completely understand the awe you felt during this eclipse. It was absolutely incredible!
I saw a total of the eclipse as a child in cornwall 1999 and it's one of the most amazing things I've seen in my life. There was a rock full of birds nests at the beach we went to where we decided to watch eclipse and when the sun went out, birds from all over went back to in the go to bed, only to be woken up again minutes later and all fly away in an absolute cacophany.
Eclipses are utterly amazing.
I love how the shirt Red was wearing while explaining how she would see the eclipse had a lunar cycle on it. I have no idea if that was intentional but it's still fun.
Funny story - In Oregon, where I live about 100 miles north of Eugene, the cloud cover was so dense we couldn't see the sun through it, so we missed the eclipse in 2023!
16:16 Thank you, Red! I had no chance to see this from my vantage point!
Thank you for making me feel better about missing it! I almost went to an Eclipse watching party at OSU, but when i woke up it was super foggy and i decided to stay home. Glad to hear my hour of sleeping in was worth it.
And that’s why the ducks are better!! Jk jk can’t wait civil war tho. What a great eclipse

It was so funny how Red said "it almost moved me to tears" because it DID move me to tears like I have absolutely been there, a few weeks ago I tried to watch a meteor shower nearby but it was storming all night so no matter where I went it was just clouds 😭😭 It's nice to know it's universal for all of us space nerds and I hope they post more space videos in the future!!
Hello from April 2024. Here in western New York we missed it. :( The cloud cover was so dense here I gave up and went inside. I just noticed it get really dark for a few minutes. C'est la vie.
The one thing that Red got wrong in this video, is that we are a captive audience. Because all the work OSP does is captivating.
God, Red seems like such a delight to just sit down and have a conversation with. She has so many fascinating interests that I just want to pick her brain for hours about things she's passionate about
FINALLY a large content creator acknowledging that it's weird to film strangers
Watching this one more time before the eclipse today, April 8th. This video inspired me to go chase it down with some friends. Thank you Red! Good luck spotting it today!! 🤞
As the local space nerd, I had to explain most of this stuff to my friends who had varying questions about the eclipse last month. It was fun.
Also, yay! I learned something new! The saros series thing. I'm gonna have to look that up to learn more.
Also, did you know that the fancy astronomy term for the diamond ring effect is "Baily's Beads"?
But yeah, being in the area around Oregon, Idaho, etc. sucks when you're a space nerd because when things are happening there's either nowhere with a view of the sky unobscured by trees and buildings or the weather covers it up!
I wouldn’t hate a new video type where Red just talks about space
Heck yeah I love it when red decides she can do whatever the heck she wants
Diggin the Journey soundtrack in the background
Red and the other awesome space eclipse people: I walk through the valley of the shadow of *The Moon*
“You’re not a captive audience”
I think Red underestimates exactly how captive we are by the siren call of her nerding out.
Hooray, it’s Red’s “I want to talk about Space, so God Damn it I want to talk about it” hour! I love listening to people nerd out about random yet strangely specific topics!
I don't know why I'm so moved by this. The storytelling, the sheer bliss on your face after you captured the eclipse, or an enthusiasm that just brightens everyone's day. What a superlative video. Thank you for sharing with us.
Never before have clouds been so explicitly framed as the antagonist of a story. Well done making me root for the death of clouds.
Oh no, reds realized she can do anything, SHE WAS NSVER SUPPOSED TO FIND OUT! WERE ALL DOOMED(to having amazing videos about interesting topics to brighten our days)
Neat to think that while you were having this whole adventure, I was up in San Antonio to see the same thing. Roundabout midday for us, I stood near a small grill cooking burgers and hotdogs, a pair of dark paper glasses on my face to even see this fantastic event, scorching the hair from my knuckles and enjoying the cool Texas weather.
Edit: Oh, hey! I'll be able to see it again in the same spot in 2024!
Live in San Antonio and took a step outside to check it out. Was shaking my fist at the sky that morning because it was overcast.
I live in San Antonio and everyone at my play practice went outside and shared the special glasses
Hey Red, I watched this video when it first dropped and it set me on a path to get myself to an area of totality. And needless to say it was a life changing experience. I got to watch the sun slowly get covered up behind my glasses, watch the colors around me grow dimmer and dimmer until it looked like evening, and even got to see the diamond ring effect! It was such an experience, and it was all due to your video that even got me thinking about seeing it. So thank you for your enthusiasm!
"It is my first look at the sun since yesterday." is some Fully Badass Fantasy Narration Stuff and I got actual chills.
As a fellow eclipse chaser that is so often cursed by the gods giving us clouds, I am impressed with your determination and ability to find a positive.
The footage of the Ring blazing through the wandering clouds is utterly spellbinding. So beautiful!
"Which is that I can do what I want" YES. Incredible
When you showed us the footage of the ring of fire, I started crying. I did not know I was going to do that. Just completely spontaneous tears. Thank you. I was in the 70% region, and I went outside to look (with solar eclipse glasses) when the eclipse was at its height. It was very cool, but this was SO MUCH COOLER!
However, I can't complain, because I am very lucky. I was living in Nashville in 2017, so I got to see the last total solar eclipse to cross the US, and now I am living in Little Rock in the path of totality for next year as well. And not only that, but I looked it up, and the next major total solar eclipse to pass over the continental US will be in 2045, and Little Rock is the only major city that will get to see both!
