Being 70 I listen to this in high school. I knew it was great music, but I had no clue that 50 years later it gets better each time.
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I've been enjoying it for over fifty years now. And it still sounds as fresh and as energetic as it did the first time I heard it. You asked a great question early on in the performance; something like, "How do you even go about writing a 20 minute piece of music?" Well, they did it. I don't know how, but to my ears this is as relevant as it has ever been, maybe more considering the pathetic state of popular music today.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to be in my teens to hear so many artists come out with such creative simply amazing music. No other time since the 70's have so many artists started their musical endeavor. And yes, YES was a very captivating, musically stimulating band that fit so well with the times.
This Masterpiece has sustained me through life's up and downs for 50 years now and I'm still Close to the Edge, but I've found light at the end of the tunnel.

This is in the top ten prog songs of all time in my opinion. What a journey this song is
IMO The greatest prog rock track of all time! I saw Yes play this live. I've been lucky enough to see all the prog rock greats, Yes are the GOATs and always so uplifting. This song starts seemingly out of control with a band trying to bring it all under control. Thank you for reacting to Close to the Edge! Would recommend Awaken next!
At 11:04 "It feels like I'm going through different phases of life here". Indeed. Here's my take on those "phases":
Anderson said the lyrics were inspired by Hermann Hesse's 1922 novel "Siddhartha", which charts a journey of self-discovery and spiritual realisation, so... It opens with the peaceful sounds of nature, followed by the chaos of individual life in human society, the search for spiritual enlightenment, the notion that it cannot be found in human society ("Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space, He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race, I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place"), and ending with the sounds of nature one again (the Buddhist idea of enlightenment as being one with nature). The end of the journey was thus there at the beginning, all along. But while the author has attained that higher spiritual plane, they are still physically bound to the material reality of their lower, Earthly existence; so as seasons pass by: I get up, I get down.
Released in 1972; 50 years after the novel, and now 50+ years ago, but still timeless.
In an interview, Jon Anderson, the lead vocalist talked about how Eddie Offord the sound engineer, had strips of tape recordings, all labeled, and arranged on a board for later splicing,
and had also left some pieces on a table, and during the night, the cleaning lady for the studio had scooped the strips on the table up, and thrown them away with the rest of the trash.
The next day they came in, and realized that several pieces were missing, and someone realized that a few were on the table, and probably got thrown away, so they had to dumpster dive
to get the tape pieces back. Eddies contribution to the recording, as the engineer, and with the band throughout the 70's cannot be overlooked, he was also a Master at his craft as well.
I saw Yes in the mid 70’s at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Arena..saw many of the great bands of that era, went to countless shows. Yes IMO opinion was the most talented band I saw, they had a rotating circular stage and each amazing musician would be rotated by you throughout. Insanely talented band!! Glad you enjoyed it but, trust me, listen to it a few more times and you’ll come to appreciate it even more. The song is indeed a journey and (if you see it that way) quite spiritual. Now 70 years old, this “masterpiece” is (in my mind) the greatest composition of all time. Jon Anderson’s vocals are unparalleled, Chris Squires bass and backup vocals are outstanding and Rick Wakeman is a wizard on the keyboards. Thanks for the review and giving us the opportunity to listen to this awesome track once again!

The somewhat chaotic beginning of this trsck is almost like a sonic pallet warmup to acclimate the listener for the journey they are about to embark on.
Possibly the greatest progressive rock song ever composed . 5 of the mist talented individuals in rock history that used to perform this masterpiece live in jaw dropping delivery. Instrumentally and vocally perfect. When YES was on top of their game, they seemed super natural. Try “Roundabout “ next for a different yet extremely welcoming serving of Yes.
The way I look at Close to the Edge is that it an amazing piece of musical art. So original and needs a few listens just to wrap your head around what you are listening to. Yes has so many amazing songs. This song should not have been your first Yes song you have to build up to this. I would try Roundabout or Starship Trooper next. By the way great reaction.

One of the best songs no compositions I have ever heard. It is just as amazing now as it was when it came out. This is truly a case where they don't make them like this anymore. Unless you go to classical music or maybe jazz, but there are no rock bands that can do this any more.

'Close To The Edge' is my favorite Yes album. Furthermore, it is among my top three or four favorite albums, period. Ironically, my favorite Yessong is probably 'Starship Trooper' from 'The Yes Album', but I digress. Anyway, 'Close To The Edge' (the whole album) is a transcendent experience and an absolute masterwork.

Great reaction to my favorite all time musical Masterpiece! And thats since age 16,and im 62 now. As other have said , Side B top notch as well!. And Yes has so many other classics from the 70s to experience . I usually dont recommend diving into CTTE first, most start with Roundabout, but you did it!

If you look for another vintage Yes song that has a constant DRIVING rhythm, check out Tempus Fugit, crank it to 11 in your car and you can't do the speed limit. Trust me bro. Peace.

If I only had one song to listen to for the rest of my life it would be this. The more one listens to it, the more one gets out of it, and the bigger the journey one takes. There is always something new between beginning and end...it transcends time.

First, the lyrics of the early Yes songs is not very relevant, the voice is more of an instrument. The stuff is very trippy, the lead singer Jon Anderson is a yoga and meditation hippy.
This song is a metaphor for the Bands history. Chaos as they talk about forming a band and what it would be like, with a breakout of various melodies as they write and develop a catalog. The tours start with the first Down by the river.. The are spaces after each tour and time for, and sounds of, new development. As the song progresses they mirror the success with a sound that is more regal and elevating.

you started with maybe the best yes song but many would say Roundabout but all their songs are fantastic. You will see that Bach, Mozart are all with us. Progressive rock is classical. You have to hear it a few times to get use to itl.....
Yes is really the best, nobody like them. You dove in at the deep end though. This song is wild and unusual, with so many changes, it really takes listening a bunch of times to really get songs like this. I recommend going a little earlier and listen to Roundabout, then Starship Trooper, then Heart Of The Sunrise. Then do more of the longer epics, anything else on Close To The Edge, Relayer, and Going For The One. Then do a few 80's hits from their 90125 album.

If you think of YES especially the bigger longer songs, as a classical composition like Beethoven or Mozart, then you will get the composition more clearly. Instead of thinking of the as separate parts think of them as a whole piece with variations upon a central theme each part or section may sound like a different song but YES does tie them together along the way if you listen carefully. There are interludes, passages, motifs.
