We are so behind on our garden prep for this year. Pruning the fruit trees nd grape vines. We show our garden and chickens on our channel Catch the Buzz too. Your videos are great btw. Thank you. I still need to build the chicken ladder though

I think every year most people are behind with the garden prep 😂. I was just sitting here thinking about how my peas need to get in the ground and I need to get my tomato starts going, but it’s okay to be behind!
      Hey thanks!

I moved into my house last year, and the soil was hard packed and awful. This past fall, I scattered a cover crop seed mix around where I want to plant my garden (clovers, daikon radish, mustard, field collards, winter wheat, and some other stuff). At this point it’s all experimental so I’ll see how it goes! I know I ended up with a ton of daikon radishes, some I pulled up, but I’ve left the rest. Most of the cover crop has survived the winter, surprisingly. The best part is improving the soil without chemicals. The legumes provide a nice little home in their roots for nitrifying bacteria, so this also enriches the soil. There’s also fungi in the soil that help plants obtain more nutrients.

I seriously love this so much!
Planting all that stuff could break some of that hard packed soil! Keep experimenting, a hard packed soil can one day be a rich and loose soil that anything will grow in!

I have been trying to convince my husband that we really need to add nutrients to our low quality garden dirt. The dirt is very dense also. So the plants can't really make a good root system. Carrots never grow because the dirt doesn't allow for expansion.

I have hard clay soil. In the summer it starts looking like cement. We quit tilling & just put mulch on top. My soil is now this dark rich beautiful soil. I haul in a lot in the fall with leftover chicken coop "cleanings" & then we bring in more springtime. This will be our 3rd spring doing this. Good luck. Either way keep gardening!

      Try adding in some gypsum.

@@SageandStoneHomestead gypsum has been huge for our trees, but I never put it in my garden. Thanks.

I’ve heard that saying too. I can’t remember who said it either.

I'm working on my second attempt at worm farming for compost.

Love it!! We ran out of space in some beds and feeding a compost tea helps when the bed still needs something but there is no room for bulk. We do granular fertilizer too but compost tea would be more in line with feeding the soil vs plants

Nah. I'm an Aussie and I don't have any problems understanding Brandon just makes watching his videos more efficient. His diction is fantastic. I agree if you couldn't understand him SLOW down, but Brandon is very easy to understand and listen to.
