You are kinda like me, I try different things. The past two winters (Zone 5 in WI) I did winter composts. The first year a huge insulated (bags of leaves) hot compost I kept covered and feeding all winter. I ended up with compost by spring but sections of it got too hot (did not turn) and most of the nutrients were gassed off. The best thing was I had tons of worms, they were active all winter. Last year did a pseudo Johnson Sue insulated compost. Compost was not as finished, a good amount of worms but no burnt areas. I ran some of the unfinished compost in new hot bins and used the rest as worm bedding and mulch for grow bags. Also last year I did a huge insulated leaf mold bin. It stayed active all winter except the top few inches plus a ton of worms. Due to jumping worms finding my leaf mold bin this summer, I had to construct a jumping worm proof leaf mold bin (video on my channel) . Seeing that it is hopefully "worm proof" I dumped one of my worm bins into the shredded leaves. I also put some high nitrogen components into the leaf mold bin to ensure it heats up a bit. I'm sure your worms are going to be just fine, just being buried in the wood chips is going to help a lot. Enjoyed your video, will check out some more.

The little section that is a mix of the leaf mould and castings looked really nice. Adding all the leaves to the inside top of the should provide some good insulation. Your winters are pretty mild so hopefully, it all works out. Otherwise, you will need to bring the worms home. 😀 For the casting you harvested, are you going to spread them on some of the beds then cover the beds with leaves or other amendments?
Ya I definitely prefer the leaf mold to cardboard, but it's pretty cool seeing the cardboard change over time !! Ya last winter made us pretty nervous about what could happen this year. Good to be prepared !! We seeing as the finished compost is so full casting. I think we'll save the harvest material from the worm bin and use 20% in or seed mixes. Nematodes microarthropods, protozoa, beneficial fungi (zero bad fungi) and of course a ton of bacteria.
I completely agree that having these microbes in the soil from the get go is terrific, the only problem is I start hundreds of plants and have to be a little conservative in using my castings.
When I plant out in the garden is when I use the bulk of my castings. Everything gets at least a cup. This year I did not buy any bone, fish or blood meal and had wonderful harvests. Third year working my soils, gets better every year.

Excellent comments Brian!! Steve, Brian has a channel, he's just north of you :)
What about polyester foam to line the inside & bubble wrap on the outside?
That's a great idea Tom, just gotta find something like that!! After our last storm there's tons of pine, cedar, fir bows I may use to help. Gotta a ton of leaves today aswell:)
Thanks for the suggestions, we really appreciate it!!
Cheers J&C 🪱🌱🪱🤜🤛😁

Hello, friends! Great job. In my opinion, eggshells are enough, but maybe someone has a different opinion? Good luck to you👍🌻💙💛💐
No you right Svetlana!! Everyone seems to think that was the right amount :)))
Hope you have a great week!!
Cheers J&C 🪱🌱🪱🤞😁😁
Great commentary and very watchable thanks. On your eggshell question I do not know the answer, but I know a man that does 🙂. A channel that is largely inactive ATM is "London Worms & Garden", he covered this and lots of other interesting worm details and is an interesting watch.
Thanks Dave!! We're new to all this but love it!! Thanks for the suggestion, we'll definitely check him out !! We love this platform, as new gardeners we've learn at from people helping people, so cool :)
If I may ask, where are you from Dave ?
Cheers from Victoria Canada

Those worms look like they eat a lot of eggs. Are you sure this is profitable?
Math isn't a strong suit for me, so of coarse it's profitable Ric !!
Hope you're kickin butt down there in East Texas !!
