Hey folks, if you’re watching this in the future I did respond to all the comments originally. Great place to get lots of free cardboard with limited to no ink and thick sheets of untreated paper is Costco. As long as they aren't too busy, they will be happy to give pile up any uncrushed boxes and paper that is used to separate and better support the attached layers of products on pallets. I got a ton for my garden and will be doing it again once i build my own worm bin.
Wish I had thought of this. I love seeing that you had a new video. Would you care to tell me where you got your small kindling wood splitter that you were using on your porch.🙏🙏
Hello from my homestead in northwest florida. My chest freezer quit on me and so i was looking for ways to repurpose it. I thought about vermicomposting first because I have done that on a small scale in bins before and I think a large container like the freezer would be great for that purpose. I live in hot and humid florida zone 8b. I think the chest freezer will help keep the worms cooler in summer and definitely warmer in winter. Glad I found your video and channel.
Holes were for ventilation. If you leave it open, critters get in and ruin the system, mice, rats, raccoons, and so on, even wild birds. For us, my chickens would clean it out in a day, How did you clean out the system when it was full, how to separate the worms out, and did the rocks make it harder to clean the system out?
No the rocks are layered with the screen so you can run your shovel right on top of it. I’ll feed on one side and scoop from the other. I’ve never had an issue with ventilation as there is a large space of air above the living area for the worms. I’ve also left it open for months in the summer with no issue. Sometimes I’ll put a bird netting over it that’s it
Thank for this video. We finally found a freezer to expand our worm composter. I did saw the video of the guy making air holes in the freezer but living in a zone 6, I much prefer your technique. My question is, how do you collect the worm tea from under the freezer? I saw your old freezer was standing on concrete blocks but your new freezer didn’t seem to be. Thank you for your reply
I've never gotten any worm tea from mine, my understanding is you need to water everyday to get the tea. I water periodically, but not that often. I do it all for the vermicompost
I love your channel. It inspired me to make my own worm bin! I don't have a freezer or anything but I basically just took some wire, made a circle , and layered leaf mulch and dirt all throughout it. I do have a question however. Do worms mind if there are ashes in the compost? Had some ashes from burning wood over the past year and I'd love to work it into the soil. Also how often do you add water to a worm bin or compost pile? I have a ton of leaf mulch from this year's fall season.
Also would like to add you are absolutely right about melons. Where I threw all of my food scraps out, the melons were 100% ate up and all the onions I threw out went untouched and actually started to grow hahaha. I also noticed worms will eat up corn cobs too. Threw a couple on the pile and they are gone two months later.
@@HoneybeeHollowGardens Surprisingly before I made the worm thing it was just a big pile of dirt I occasionally threw food scraps on. When I dug up the dirt to put in a wagon to move to the new area in the yard, there were tons of worms in it. I'm not really worried of the worms getting out of the bin honestly. I might try to insulate it a bit (it is currently out of the wind) as it would encourage them to stay in the area more. They're just earth worms, nothing special haha. If they wanna get out they can but there's plenty of food for them and I moved all nearby leaves away so they'll probably just stay where the food is.
Thank you this is the exact type of old deep freezer I have that i want to make into a vermicompost bin i was wondering if there was anyway to make a magnetic screen lid to go under the lid so I can leave the lid propped open without the worry about other flies soldier flies or anyother type of insects getting into my bin that really gross me out! I had a issue with soldier fly larvae getting into my bins last summer and they finally disappeared Thank God but I want to try to prevent this issue this year.
Where exactly did you get the screen that you put above the river rocks cuz it seemed to pretty firm and not real flimsy so I might be able to get some of that screen and build a thin wooden frame around it and put some thin magnets all around the frame so it would sit flush on the top of worm bin under the lid so I don't have to worry about black soldier fly larvae cuz they gross me the heck out I almost completely gave up on my worm bins last year cuz of them!

Nice I’d say keep it in the shade. Even when the box is open they can get really hot in the sun
Thanks Will.
Thanks Will 🤗❤️
Muy bien bro

Great way to recycle and keep worms all year!
Cool

Great video very simple easy to follow not too much bulshit
Of course
How often do you need to change the bedding / compost ? I am more interested in the use of worms than the castings.
You don’t need to change really, I add bedding about twice a year. I take some castings out and replace that space with soaked cardboard
