- Astroworkz presenter Simon Lewis gets an exclusive look at the all new Explore Scientific 3" Self Centering focuser upgrade.
This new 3" focuser from ES is designed to replace the stock focusers on the ES 127, 152 and 165 models and creates a high performance focuser capable of handling large payloads with ease.
And whats more is that you can drop your ZWO EAF right on it out of the box using the standard fittings in the kit.
Check out all the details in todays video of this exciting upgrade!
Thanks to Tyler and Explore Scientific for allowing me to be part of this exciting project.

I hope there is a future video showing how to swap out the stock focuser with the new focuser.
I am sure we can :)
Thanks for the overview, it gave me the confidence to purchase for my 127cf.
I was encouraged by your mention that it works seamlessly with the EAF using the stock parts provided by ZWO. But the focuser’s thumb screw to adjust tension on the draw tube does not fit through the EAF bracket slot.
Always something I guess.
But solid overview and appreciate the upgrade to my imaging chain.
I actually just opened the hole out in the bracket ... but most of the time I didnt bother with the thumb screw just rely on the EAF tension
Wow, SEXY setup!
I wish my good old Skywatcher 150P 750mm F5 newton and the EQ3-2 GoTo woudle be as sophisticated and nice.
At least i have a Lacerta 1:10 focusser which is better than the standard one without 1:10 gearing.
Simon, What type of adapter if any did you use so you can screw a ZWO 2600 into this beast? I used one of the extension into the compression coupler, but would prefer a screw on connection.
Simon, do you think ES will consider making adaptors for other telescopes to go after the manual market Moonlight abandoned? This looks like a great option, and I will know for sure when mine arrives Monday, Feb 20, 2023 for my 152.
not sure prob more one for Tyler - but if enough people ask they might well - enjoy it ... I love mine :)
Would be of great interest were someone to do a head-to-head comparison with a FeatherTouch and MoonLite equivalent.
My self and Simon have Moonlite NightCrawlers so unfortunately wouldn’t be the same. And we don’t have any feather touches. That’s why when It was being designed, we wanted to make sure that we price matched around the same for both.
@@TeamAstroworkz And just so I fully understand what you've indicated, you were involved in this focuser's design which was based solely on trying to price-match a similarly spec'd FT and a ML NightCrawler. That's an interesting approach. And you didn't have a FT against which to compare functions and features.
There was a FT that i could compare it to. My main goal was to get rid of the need of extension tubes.
I just purchased the 3 inch focuser. Can you explain how to install it on my Explore Scientific !55 mm refractor. Thanks
All you have to do is take the 3 inch focuser out of the visual back on the 152mm and place the new on in its place.
There should be a thumb screw and a couple of allens that youll have to loosen.
This guy has drank too much coffee.
So I did a head-to-head comparison of this Explore Scientific focuser against a Feathertouch 3035. No experienced astro hobbyist, and I do mean not one, would ever select the explore scientific to mate with a telescope. It's seriously misleading to even subtlely imply that this ES is a FT competitor. Take machining for example, the ES had minor nicks in its interior baffle and it has a bulky utilitarian look and feel. At high magnification there is noticeable image displacement movement when racking in-out (unacceptable at any price range but even moreso here). Its micro/macro adjuster felt clumsy. The FT, out-of-the-box, looks like a piece of quality machining designed by an engineer at a fine Swiss watch company. It performs as well. Extremely smooth operation with feathertouch (truly) control. Most importantly, there's no image shift. It's rock solid. I was impressed enough that I went to the USPTO website to check out its design patent to learn how they are doing this. Bottom line, if ES wants to compete against FT, at this pricepoint , it needs to go back to the drawing board. I get that ES is not a dedicated focuser company and that it simply sources designs to its chinese manufacturers. But still, the way it designed this focuser, it's the wrong approach and produced a substandard product.
I really did not come to that conclusion ... nor have I experienced anything like what you describe here .. but product choice and satifsfaction are very much tied to that person ... I've owned scopes with FT focusers too ;)
I hope there is a future video showing how to swap out the stock focuser with the new focuser.
Which Telescope did you purchase the new focuser for?
