Little Women II: Jo's Boys. A bunch of us may not have grown up with the books, but are familiar with the animated versions of them. Though heads up if you choose to watch them, they may have made some changes and or proper translations for older series are harder to find if they haven’t been dubbed :/

    Wow, pressure from fans for a character to become romantically involved actually made it happen? What wild times, the 1800s were. Thankfully fandoms now-a-days don't relentlessly pressure writers over the love lives of fictional characters. And we all lived happily ever after.

    I remember watching the 2019 movie (which is amazing) in the theatre and being absolutely floored by how OVERWHELMINGLY HARD I related as an Aromantic Asexual to Jo's speech in the scene towards the end where she's in tears expressing to her mother about not wanting to get married but feeling terrified of being alone in life if she didn't find a partner in a society that places value on romantic partnered relationships above all others. The book of course also delves into Jo's frustrations and fears over this but something about seeing it concentrated in one big outburst like that struck me way harder than when I read the story as a kid (it may also have something to do with me being older now and more experienced with my identity). I know the scriptwriters likely didn't mean to code her as Aromantic but whooooo boy did they nail it anyway (at least for that one scene).
    Having read the book before, I already knew what was coming when she did end up getting in a romantic relationship in the end, but it was somehow even more disappointing for how strongly I related to her this time around than when reading as a kid. With how often characters I relate to who aren't interested in romance get hit with the "you'll change your mind when you just find the Right One" trope I was so hoping to see something different for once, even if it deviated from the source material. I'm so glad to learn that at least the author got to live out her life without conforming to social norms. Yay Louisa May Alcott! 😄

    • @beeaggro2593
      @beeaggro2593 Год назад +1

I was wondering if you have any plans for a spin-off series on the Gaming channel called "So You Haven't Played..."? You could highlight some of the great games from the past that were overlooked, like Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube, or something current that is bubbling up under the surface like Dwarf Fortress.

    • @katherinemclean1448
      @katherinemclean1448 Год назад +5

      I think the new one was trying really hard to be distinct from the previous adaptations, and I understand why. If you go all the way back and watch the adaptations with Catharine Hepburn or June Allyson you'll see they're almost identical to one another. The new one was trying really hard to be different. And it totally was, but if you didn't already know the story, it could be a little jarring. I've seen most adaptations of the story and even I found the new one kinda disjointed.
      A historic costuming youtuber pointed out they missed a huge opportunity in the way they filmed the movie. The time period it was set in was WILD with the speed that fashion changed and if they had put more research and effort in, even if they were jumping around, they could've at least marked the periods as distinct with the style of the dresses and such which would at least provide a subtle cue to the audience that things were different.

      One thing I'll give the new version was that they gave a nod to how Joe was originally not supposed to marry like Alcott, and sort of implies that the Joe of the movie may not have married. May not be canonical to the book, but it is a good message none the less.
