I still sincerely believe ODST would've shined as a tactical, more methodical shooter in comparison to the non-stop guns-blazing action and Spartan heroics of the main series. However, due to the limits of console controls, it probably wouldn't have gone so well over the original targeted audience so I can understand why Bungie designed the player character as a diet Spartan in-game.
But imagine an Halo 3: ODST where you were more fragile and couldn't run around eating plasma rounds then waiting for stamina (read as "Shields") to regen, but instead smart movement and suppressing fire kept you alive. Having minimal stamina, to give you a chance to react to fire, along with the finite non-regenerating health bar, the first time it was introduced since CE, would make managing your health and scouting for Optican kiosks much more impactful.
Imagine stealth being a vital strategy to approach, or avoid, the main engagements in the blackout on Mombasa Streets since you are most of the time a single elite Marine against a larger, organized Covenant force. Brutes in-lore are nearly twice the height of your average human and can take an inhuman amount of damage, so every encounter with them should feel daunting instead of a worse Elite as they are now.
Imagine suppressed firearms that function like suppressed firearms and can pick off lone patrols from a distance (assuming you're not too close to them when firing, suppressed guns can still be somewhat loud IRL) before they can alert the rest of the Covenant vanguard or ahead of assaulting entrenched positions, instead of immediately alerting *everyone* the moment you fire. VISR would be more of a recon utility tool than simply keeping it on permanently for every fight (maybe have VISR on a limited use time with a rechargeable battery sort of like CE's flashlight), instead making it much more useful to observe patrols and note down sniper Jackal positions from a distance; guerilla warfare is the name of the game.
The closest I got to experience this was a mod for MCC on Steam where someone had a very similar vision for the game, though now sadly defunct, called "ODST Definitive Edition" (you can still find old reviews for it on RUclips, such as this one: ruclips.net/video/wqyi2tBrbpI/видео.html), and it was honestly the best time I've ever had with ODST. If someone were able to make a similar mod or manage to transfer it over to Steam Workshop, I'd be more than grateful to enjoy that sort of gameplay one more time.

VISR ACT/PSV toggles your sensor suite. Passive disables a lot of functions, limiting your "radar" to blips appearing only as they move, disabling telemetry, NV only, etc. But it is also hard to detect. Active arms for maximum resolution. See enemies through walls, automatically rangefind to reticle, gain access to security systems, etc, but they'll know you're looking for them.
Your armor will keep you alive under fire. Plasma ammunition won't burn through your armor instantly, and there's more than bullets to worry about; explosions will take you apart if you're not careful.
Setting up distractions by using local infrastructure, or tilting the environment to your advantage is crucial. An Elite is nearly bulletproof, and its armor is still sturdy even after its shields shatter, needing careful marksmanship. A covenant tank is a tough target even for multiple rocket launcher shots, and they'll tell their buddies on your attempts to drop them.
Enemies are mostly optional. you can get through life without touching a trigger. But such is life, that you're subject to a bit of luck.

Play ODST on Legendary. I call it the "Lore accurate ODST experience"

    • @jtnachos16
      @jtnachos16 11 месяцев назад +8

I mean, given the covenant use heat-based weaponry for the most part, that 'hide and regain stamina' could be argued as 'hide and let the heat dissipate off your plates' The armor halo marines wear is so bulky specifically because it's a design not based around fighting ballistics, but around heat ablasion. The ODST gear is supposedly significantly better than normal marine gear, though not as good as SPI and obviously nowhere close to Mjolnir, so their armor being able to dissipate off a few hits from a plasma rifle or pistol without causing notable injury isn't too out of line.
As is the game does a pretty good job of making you feel a fair bit weaker than a spartan, heavy-handed and arbitrary as some of the methods may be.

@@slavicgerman5104 No, that is too fun to be lore accurate.
No sarcasm, like I literally had too much fun playing ODST on Legendary, the only problem is the lack of ammo if you’re using the “foreign” skull which I did. I had to go through the whole Data Center infested with bugs with no ammo, pretty sure I also skipped over like 10 or so brutes because my shotgun only had 5 shells left (that was before the buggar hive.).
I was so close to actually killing those apes too, the only problem was the final Brute Chieftain and the carbine wielding brute. Their shot placement is impeccable, and the Chieftain having a plasma turret did not help. Maybe someday I’ll try this skull combo again but go for the audio log ending, and possibly try to actually beat those brutes.
Another fun thing I did was outmaneuver a covenant defensive position (the one that is behind those giant closed doors on that banshee mission, when you have to get off and open the doors manually.) and ninja’d a Brutes Chieftain with a Gravity Hammer. (Same situation, used up all the ammo on the way to get inside the banshee’s, and had to use all the leftovers to actually break through the position towards the button that opens the doors. Then I took down all the brutes I could one by one with melee and whatever grenades I could find on the other side of the barricades.)

"I remembered that day, October 20 2552. I was aboard a cruiser near Malta station. That's when the first fleet came. I thought 'that was it huh', damn covies finally found out where our stronghold is and started pummeling our world. Something was odd though, that fleet was too small. Doesn't matter still, bastards took out Malta and Athens before we could mobilize. Miraculously Cairo survived, heard it was because of big mean green 117. But luck turned bad when one ship, the flagship holding one of em prophets punched right through the gun field, headed straight towards new mombasa.
We all knew this is a win or die situation, we dropped within 30 minutes all around new mombasa, the whole 65th. I busted out my drop pod and a hellscape awaited me, damn covies were tearing through people, civies, marines... all of em. I grabbed my ma37 and let hell loose. I went to the south highway, where i was issued to before the drop. Covies were really desperate on this assault, throwing everything they've got, including scarabs. I was aiding the marines and police for evacuation when that i heard it, just 5-6 clicks away from our position the scarab tore through the city before the Big Green took it down. It was horror I never seen before. Heard from chatters across channels (it was a mess, nobody was using specific channels cause shit has hit the fan), the aliens were looking for something, and whatever that was on here.... they want it badly....
Daybreaks and the next day arrives, a bigger fleet, no... the entire damn covenant appeared on top of earth. We got to work immediately covering the evacuation of the city. The south exit luckily has less focus, the occasional harrassment of Sangheili was quickly dealt with, until the Monkeys showed up... But nothing we couldn't handle. A spartan III was also sent here to aid us, with her help we held the line with minimal losses. Oddly the split lips showed up less and less, but the brutes grew in numbers, and with better armament each assault wave.
November 17th, the evacuation was all done and we skirmished against the occupying covenants in the area. Suddenly an urgent HQ send us all to Voi, said something landed and we need to head there asap. I rushed there with a band of marines to see what the hell is HQ on about. Very quickly we regretted everything. We were under attack by some unknown enemy, best describe them as... fungal horror. The marines quickly went down... I have to.... i have.... i had no choice but to end their suffering when i saw those... things... use them as puppets. Pretty soon i was stranded and low on ammunition, my ma37 only had a few rounds left and my m90 was completely out of shells. That's when i bumped into a group of split lips inside a wrecked mall, stranded from their main force. They we're riddled in wounds, but not our work... plasma burns. Fortunately all of us figured it will be stupid to shoot each other, and surviving is the top concern. The leader, Nezus Rhadai warned me of an inbound glassing, and offered me a seat on his Phantom, should i 'get them the hell outta here'. We fought our way to the roof top of to a nearby hospital, just in time for one of the last phantoms to fetch us, and escape while we watched the city burns..."
Sry for long thread, just decided to write a short story
