It would have been so easy for you to treat this story - Julia's story - as a curiosity much like she was made out to be by the people who exploited her. I'm glad you chose not to, and instead remained respectful and even seemed truly upset by how she was treated. I had never heard of her or you before today, and I don't normally watch videos related to death (I'm easily scared). But I'm glad I learnt of her story, and glad that I learnt it from someone who treated it with the compassion that she deserved to have while she lived. Thank you.
I just saw a photo of Julia and her adorable baby. It made my heart ache. He looks like any precious newborn baby. They deserved so much better. I'm so glad they were finally laid to rest.
People born with Generalized Hypertrichosis are know to have smooth velvety voices. It's a result of the hormone imbalance! So Julia probably sounded A-MA-zing
Well. How's that for a truly fascinating piece of information? That is really interesting, and nice to know. I love learning about obscure pieces of history. Thank you so much for sharing that insight!!
She probably did sound amazing! And it's tragic because the people back then probably didn't give a shit about her singing and more about the way she looked 😭. Even doubling tragic what happened to her baby boy and not being buried with her, instead he was tossed in a field and eaten by critters 😖.
AND THEN found another woman like his ex wife, married her, renamed her, and forced her to perform near the corpse of his ex wife and infant son. #theadorlentistheworst
XDranzer000 How’s she an SJW when it’s literally known that Europeans kept the body’s of POC in museums on display for years. You’re literally on a video proving it.
I remember when they finally brought her back here, a lot of people still don't know who she is but others were waiting for her return and burial. She had a religious service and all 💖 finally a burial with dignity.
Next time I go to Mexico, I’d love to plan to visit her burial place, lay flowers, and pay my respects. I am glad she was finally granted the dignity in death that she was never afforded in life.
I'm glad she finally got to go home. It's so sad her son wasn't able to be buried with her. Her husband is roasting in a special kind of hell, as ugly on the outside now as he was on the inside, while Julia and her son are so beautiful and happy, as they dance together in the hereafter.
It's a shame there are no recordings of her singing, I'd love to hear her. What happened to this woman is just horrible. As far as "humans" go, we mostly suck.
At various times in history, performing in shows was the only way for lower-class 'freaks' to make a living. Depending on their physical issues, some could be unable to do heavy labor and lacked the education for other employment (assuming anybody would hire them); some families literally couldn't afford to have non-working members aside from very young children; society shunned them, cutting off other support; they weren't sought as spouses -- that sort of thing. But a traveling show gave them employment, housing, and the company of people who wouldn't reject them. It sucked, but it was better than begging and hoping not to be robbed. For Julia, though, her decision to perform rather than go home was predetermined by her childhood as a glorified dancing monkey for a jerk who did not see her as human. People had controlled her almost from birth: she didn't have the strength to resist. Her intelligence and ability were wasted.
I agree to some extent, but occasionally, close knit villages can become used to people with differences and become strangely accepting. I doubt that would have happened in her home village, but if she'd had the financial capability (which I know she didn't) to immigrate somewhere she could be safer from superstition she may have been ostracized less. I fear that no matter where she was, she would have been taken advantage of and feared.
Would you consider doing a video on the lives & corpses of African women placed in human zoos? I always wondered what happened to them after they passed & I think the education would be enlightening to everyone!
it's absolutely horrifying and heartbreaking the way she was treated in life and in death. i'm glad her body was finally interred with the dignity she deserves.
Back in 2017 there was an immersive play about Julia Pastrana set in the dark at the Melbourne Fringe Festival that I went to see (read: listen and touch and smell and taste) which is where I learnt her story. They treated her memory with respect and allowed us as audience members to connect with her while we could not see her. At the end they had a photo of her and a shrine set up for us to place flowers on and it was really beautiful
this is really wonderful, I love that the artist had the idea to make it an immersive play about her life, especially because SO MUCH of her life was based on her appearance. Immersive plays are fascinating to me and she is such a little known individual who deserves to BE known for her incredible strength and dignity, as well as her child. So awesome.

Everyone tried to discourage me from seeing her one last time, but I was set on seeing her. I don't regret it at all. I kind of wish I took more time actually. Thank you so much for your videos. I have had a fascination with death and corpses since my grandfather passed in order to cope with his death. Not only are your videos educational, but they've helped me in my mourning process. Thank you again!
powermezzo I know how you feel, I became obsessed with true crime, crime scene clean up and body farm type documentaries when I was 15 after the murder of my uncle. Knowing the inns and outs of death made it easier to process such a difficult and confusing time.
HI there! may I ask you to explain to my why/how it helped you? I am actually afraid that what I know about death, decay ect.. will disturb me and make it harder for me to mourn when I eventually have to... and that's actually one of my biggest fears about death :/ so I would be curious to hear your stories guys if you don't mind :) (sorry I'm from france so my english is probably a little weird...)
I had a similar experience to other people in this thread. I'm sure everyone reacts differently, but I personally get more scared of what I don't know. There's a pose in yoga called "dead body pose", when I was mourning my grandfather I would use that time to think about his body. It gave me some time to contemplate something that I was sad about. You can't run away from feelings, you need to give yourself an appropriate and safe time to feel them.
I love how you approached her story treating her as a person instead of a morbid curiosity and I'm overjoyed that this woman finally was able to be laid to rest with the dignity and respect that she deserved! 💜💜
She has great delivery, and I appreciate bringing light-heartedness to the subject. BUT... I would like to see Caitlyn whip out her Midwestern mom voice more often.
"The Nazis, of all people, ended these freak shows" as part of the plan to kill all the shows' *living* performers ("degenerates"/"useless eaters"), yes. Idk, just seems like pertinent information there.
Ew I know. The fact that her baby was thrown into a field and eaten... Just horrible. I wonder if the thieves did that so they wouldn’t be shown off anymore. Idk. Either way... Horrible.
dear Mortician, would you consider to make an iconic corpse episode about queen Christine of Sweden? she's another proof that women can't rest in peace when some men decide they can make money on their corpses.
Yeah, it seems doctors in the 1800s were mostly just guys who got the education to know what the human body looked like inside but were pretty free to just make up and promote whatever they felt like as if it was hard science. That's how Freud and his ilk got so well-known.
So sad.... i truly believe that she’s beautiful, her body hair is gorgeous and she pulled it off beautifully. It’s so heartbreaking how awful she’d been treated before AND after her death. I’m glad she’s now resting in peace.
Yeah that is something I can't comprehend. It's your own flesh and blood. Even though he lived only for 35 hours, it was still his son. I'm not a father yet, but I couldn't possibly imagine something so depraved, so abhorrent. Being able to do that to their family.
There was a show on hbo in the early 80s that included Julia and as a kid I was so scared of her that it caused a life long interest. As I got older, I understood the real monsters in her story. Finally she’s laid to rest.
it is really sad. she has only been shown respect after almost 200 years of being dead, and after a decade of people fighting on her behalf. I just hope that somehow she knows that people are finally treating her as a human being. I know it's a lot to hope for but it only seems right
i’m crying. i’m so happy she got the dignity and respect she deserved in the end, even though she never knew that dignity and respect in life + had no idea 156 years later people would be advocating for her.
I'm happy that she was finally laid to rest but still sad that her son wasn't with her. Did the rodents eat the bones as well? Why weren't they ever looked for? So sad.

God I honestly teared up at the part where tons of people sent her flowers and all that. At long last. It would’ve been an HONOR to be in her presence. So talented and smart and undeserving of the exploitation she endured.
Maybe is the fact that being a sideshow freak in Europe saved her life as opposed to living in Mexico in the 19th century.... Then again when it comes to being "outraged" context doesn't really matter....

Been watching your channel for the last few days, and this is the first one to touch me and make a 50+ year old man cry at man's inhumanity to others. Thank You.
Very similar to Joseph Merrick (the elephant man) He did finally find dignity being cared for by Dr. Frederick Treves. Many famous people came to see him in a respectful and personable way. His ending was sad when he decided to sleep like a normal person, knowing he would suffocate if he did so. 😪
The story of the Elephant Man is more nuanced. Dr. Treves did not want to care for Joseph, feeling his condition too extreme for the hospital facilities. Joesph Merrick actually wanted to return to the Fairs where could make money. He knew his body would end up on display after his death and he may have believed that there was nothing left for him. Dr. Treves profited off the case of The Elephant Man, even writing memoirs; where could not even remember his name. He repeatedly refers to him as John, not Joesph. The bones of Joseph Merrick are still kept in the Royal British Hospital.

Bunch of apologists in this comment section. "She was lucky to have a man treat her that way, especially considering what it was like for other women of her time." Yeah, talk about a gilded cage.
homeiswonderland right? Comments like this make me sick.
Some people apparently don't understand what "manipulation" is
So right! Considering what it’s like for women such as yourself in this time; you would be lucky to have a man abuse and take advantage of you.
idiot
He may have been the worse but Ringling Brothers would have kept her in a cage with the rest of the animals without a doubt. Pick your poison. You cannot base then on today's standards Snowflakes.
Thank you.
I'm glad she was brought back to Mexico. It's to bad that her baby was not laid to rest with her.
Cassie Schroeder-Rhodes do you know what happened to the baby’s body? I’ve watched the full video but I might have missed it.
Rachel some horrible people threw his body in a field..and rodents ate it.😢
Cassie Schroeder-Rhodes That is sick....holy fuck...
I just saw a photo of Julia and her adorable baby. It made my heart ache. He looks like any precious newborn baby. They deserved so much better. I'm so glad they were finally laid to rest.
they weren't. just her
She got laid?? Thats gonna give me nightmares
E Estrada grow up.
The baby was thrown into a field and left to be eaten..So Julie was the only one buried..
@@Borghetto.Inc04 No, she did not get laid. They mean laid to rest which basically means she was buried in a grave.

HELL YEAH!
Well. How's that for a truly fascinating piece of information? That is really interesting, and nice to know. I love learning about obscure pieces of history. Thank you so much for sharing that insight!!
A small consolation I'm sure
She probably did sound amazing! And it's tragic because the people back then probably didn't give a shit about her singing and more about the way she looked 😭. Even doubling tragic what happened to her baby boy and not being buried with her, instead he was tossed in a field and eaten by critters 😖.
So Theodore Lent not only had his wife preserved and put on display but his own son... Yep he is definitely the worst
AND THEN found another woman like his ex wife, married her, renamed her, and forced her to perform near the corpse of his ex wife and infant son. #theadorlentistheworst
Being Norwegian it's very weird hearing we kept the corpse of this poor woman in our possession for so long, and I never once heard about it.
Same here, that surprised me.
Most European countries should face the fact that they likely have abused corpses and artificats of PoC in their possession that need to be returned.
Makes u wonder what else they arent telling u
XDranzer000 How’s she an SJW when it’s literally known that Europeans kept the body’s of POC in museums on display for years. You’re literally on a video proving it.
@XDranzer000
Found the asshole
Gonna be honest, I'm kinda ashamed it took THAT long for my countrymen to return her to you
It's a shame there are no recordings of her singing, I'd love to hear her.
What happened to this woman is just horrible. As far as "humans" go, we mostly suck.
Such a tragic story :(
It really is! ):
nionvox if only she had gone back to her village instead of performing :(
#theodorelentsucks
That poor human being. I can't imagine how it must feel to be exploited as a living exhibit for a lifetime.
Lilli Jäger Also part of a deathtime.
Well you wouldn't feel anything... none the less, she should've been put to rest instead of this disgusting display of how humans are

So awesome.
Unrelated to video, but I have to thank you. My mother just died, and she was dead for about a month before she was found. Everyone tried to discourage me from seeing her one last time, but I was set on seeing her. I don't regret it at all. I kind of wish I took more time actually. But thank you for helping me have the strength to do that, and to feel confident in going into the funeral home.

Glad to know I'm not alone! My students think I'm a weirdo. Haha!
HI there! may I ask you to explain to my why/how it helped you?

Yeah, it seems doctors in the 1800s were mostly just guys who got the education to know what the human body looked like inside but were pretty free to just make up and promote whatever they felt like as if it was hard science. That's how Freud and his ilk got so well-known.

That poor baby
