Long exposure to 85 or higher decibels sound can cause hearing loss, the louder the sound the shorter time it will take. Cicadas make sound between 80-100 decibels. especially protect the younger children by reducing the exposure time.

I went to an arboretum to experience cicadas in Dayton, Ohio yesterday. One odd thing I noticed is that while the sound is omnipresent, I could not attribute any of it to individual cicadas. I now believe the reason is the males are high up in shrubs and trees as well as moving around in places unseen, and that explains why there can be so much sound attributable to cicadas one doesn't see.
