I'm glad he's getting frustrated at the bad and frustrating level generation. They amped up enemy power and trap density so much in the first area they killed any semblance of difficulty curve it's really shit game design. The game's great conceptually it's just sad to see that there are gonna be almost no new players because you can't fucking do anything. The fact some of the best Spelunky 1 players spend like 5 hours playing this and get out of the first area like 3 times is a joke.

@@mooncalf_4534 Maybe the game has been rebalanced somewhat, but I don't really get the impression that it's frustratingly unfair, speaking as someone who did play the first game a little bit but never got that far. It's obviously harder in general, but the enemies either have really clear telegraphing (moles tunneling) and/or predictably consistent behavior (horned lizards, Quillback, mosquitoes), same goes for the traps, which act pretty much like they always have and are entirely avoidable if you're quick and smart with the throwable objects. I wouldn't say streamer progress is necessarily an indicator of anything either, as around 5 hours of gameplay has gotten _me_ into the Jungle and Volcana numerous times and to Olmec once, all with a fairly clear difficulty curve, which is the kind of progression one expects from a decently hard roguelite. also "some of the best Spelunky 1 players", assuming you mean Baer and the lot, haven't really touched the game in any high-level capacity in years and are relying on familiarity + a lot of his early-game deaths are from being dumb and rushing, or tilting in avoidable situations. If all of this indicates anything, it's that the original was kind of easy, relatively speaking... remember that Baer pretty much had it wrapped around his finger for a while, discovering challenge-run strats and getting record scores on the regular. I would _hope_ that kind of thing doesn't happen this early on, with a new game.
The turkey appears to be super useful, seems like you can use them as: double jump boots, a cape, a damage shield (they take the damage instead of you for a hit or two), and last but not least they can walk on spikes from the jungle! Definitely give them mounts a chance. :)
There's a few other mounts too. Turkeys are another risk-reward like using consumables... use them for a mount, or bring back to a wrangler for a reward
2 things I've noticed with spelunky 2 just from watching, firstly the whip is much faster making hitting things a much tighter window. Secondly I feel like backtracking for things like turkeys and the eye seem designed to cost resources which I like. Another youtuber pointed out that playing spelunky "honest" is much harder than just robbing every shop and idk if that is the case with the sequel
Given how often he dies to the shopkeepers I'm pretty sure he'd have made it to the third area by now if he didn't always steal from them. Not to mention if he just picks up the gold laying all over the place he can afford most of the stuff he wants anyway.
@@nerfzinet Worth noting if you played like 6 hours of the first Spelunky, you'd die to all the shopkeepers too. Eventually strats will be learned, and Baer (and everyone) will get comfortable with their patterns and fighting them, and it'll probably get back to the old style.

feels majorly like you need to slow down. like majorly. things have been tweaked in the new game. old muscle memory will work against you brother. Deep breaths and SLOW DOWN.
A big part of Spelunky 2's design seems to be built around making things a little harder for people who've mastered Spelunky 1 to the point that they don't really think about the obstacles anymore (more enemies and obstacles that are immune to/reflect shotgun shells while the returning foes are still easily destroyed by it) while also being a little more accessible to new players (for example, Roast Turkey existing and Royal Jelly being easier to attain, default time limit being a little longer). Moles and lizards in The Dwelling still feel like overkill for the first level, though.
I think you have already noticed this since i'm watching a few days old video. But yea. Destroying the bonewalls doesn't hurt you. But they do spawn skulls when they break and if you are running they may hit you. Stop and whip.
Don't know if it's just me, but in the udjat eye room with bear, lion, panda and fox in the background, doesn't the tiles underneath the chest look like a dinosaur skull. Like...a Bananasaurus maybe? ;)
I hate to be this guy but I think it resembles the stone serpent/Medusa/naga thing that opens the main menu at the beginning of the game. Although brex definitely deserves the shout out after that crazy eggplant run he did.

The first run i play i'm going to murder every mole and lizard without mercy. They are all too dangerous to let live! You won't get me like you got my baer hero!
Hot take: this game seems easier (or maybe just not harder) than the first one (at least in the earlier stages we have seen) but the mechanics have changed slightly enough that it seems harder than it is. The games are so similar that you expect to be doing much better than you really should be and a few things are tweaked in ways that make a good understanding of the first game actually harmful because you have to unlearn habits.
It’s definitely not easier. There’s way more to be afraid of in Spelunky 2. The dwelling is way harder than the mines with its confined spaces and the later levels of the jungle and temple of Anubis are far from the easiest levels. And you can’t tell me you’ve beaten cosmic ocean lol

Other than 2 kinda going the Neon Abyss route with consumables where you choose to use them now or gamble on saving them for later, it just feels "cleaned up" to me (a relative newcomer to the series), not a malicious change.
They probably made ropes and bombs more important cause in the first game you did end up hardly using either. There was some spots, but overall you'd finish runs most of the time having used neither, except maybe once or twice to find the Black Market or in the City of Gold. Guess Mantraps also don't get killed by Spike Boots either now

I realise I'm a week late but thoughts on Spelunky 2 elements I dislike so far: • That the key and Monty can spawn in entirely enclosed blocks. In Spelunky 1 this could only happen to damsels on Hell and having it at the start here surprises me. • The number of multiple hit enemies in the caves. Previously most enemies took one point of damage this early, feels mean to new players • The lack of colour contrast between traps and the environment. Sure they're traps but they feel almost too hard to spot now. • The level layout can generate more almost or downright impossible layouts (turkey man hidden behind a shop etc.) • You can trap yourself in more places and not be able to get out, such as in the moon challenge. • Moles being able to exit from every angle including in areas where you can't really escape such as over spikes feels very unfair • Enemies can spawn over doors, which was never a problem before. Perhaps have an area of safety / they avoid when entering or exiting? • Liquids are now super hard to predict how and when they will move. Having x drips until they look flat or something would at least make it something predictable.
For a lot of these, Spelunky 2 is just asking you to learn to play the game. - This could happen to Monty in 1-1 in Spelunky HD, not weird to me at all. the clover can help you find a hidden pot of gold. When you're close to the buried treasure, you'll see a rainbow effect on the clover.
