Lezak had a terrible finish as well. He lifted his head too at the end. Phelps should give Lezak all the credit in the world instead of ragging on Bernard.
@@toddmerrill3757 Lezak gets the credit and was a great 100m swimmer, but Bernard was the gold medal 100m winner and future WR holder. He had no reason to have faded that bad against someone .5 a second slower in the 100m.
@@toddmerrill3757 Lezak STILL has the fastest 100M relay split in history. He lifted his head slightly but his performance and finish was otherworldly.
Hes not diminishing Lezak here - he's saying that absolutely everything had to go the US's way to win. They needed to have a miracle swim AND get a little bit lucky to pull it off. Nothing he said was false at all.
Yeah he never put down lezak he was explaining how they messed up and it needed to happen for them to win. Otherwise Phelps would have been 7 gold 1 silver
Lezak had the fastest split ever that was a huge factor -although if Michael says the French made critical errors well that to was also very significant
Yeah but Bernard still swam a bad lap, for the WR holder in the 100m free at the time to not even have the fastest split on his team is saying something
@@MrCdog54he had the third fastest relay split in the whole race. The other guy from his country who swam faster got bronze at worlds the next year. Lezak being insanely fast was the main reason
@@MrCdog54 Adjusting his relay split for an individual event, Lesak would have shattered the world record and it wouldn't have been beaten for 16 years. His relay split was the fastest ever by 0.6 seconds and still is the fastest relay split ever.
If Michael says mistakes were made, I'm sure mistakes were made, but it kind of diminishes what Lezak did. His record still stands almost 20 years later. And the crazy thing is Bernard actually had a really good time. Bernard's time was almost (but not quite) a full second better than Michael's time from the first leg. I think credit needs to be given to Lezak's skill, not Bernard's mistakes
Both can be true. Lezak had the best swim of his life. The best relay swim of anyone’s life. But he only was able to turn that into a win due to French failures.
Bernard was the WR holder rights before that race started and also had a running start, Phelps set an American record in his lead leg and wasn’t even a sprinter. To even suggest Bernard’s leg was better in any way is blasphemy.
That first leg Phelps swam, he was coming off a race from 20 mins before, so Phelps being one second behind is either a testament to his conditioning and talent or Bernard made mistakes that cost him
You can’t compare the lead swimmers time with the 3 that come after. Only the lead swimmers time is eligible for world record status because the following swimmers are almost always at least half a second faster due to anticipation of their jump
Phelps set an American record in the lead leg and he never even swam the 100 free at trials. He played just as big of a role as lezak no matter how you wanna look at it.
Bernard’s finish was bad, but Lezak had made up the difference and was already going by him by then. The critical error Bernard made was about 40 meters earlier by swimming near the lane line and allowing Lezak to draft off of him.
Actually crucial was the distance between them - the Frenchie was too close to the divider and the Yankee smartly got close to it to get the draft. But what most people do not know is that when you are being helped drafting off somebody - it slows down the person upfront! Physics!
Sure, he lifted his head up, but more importantly was Lezak's fastest 100 split ever 46.06. That won the race for the U.S.
You gotta realize most of the swimmers shattered the record. Even 5th place was apart of history being made lol

Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines on the call has to be one of the greatest in Olympic history. Goosebumps every single time
Rowdy Gaines is a terrible announcer.
I watch it everyday before work and it gets me fired up like no other
Phelps on Lezak finish
“His last 50 meters were absolutely incredible,” Phelps said. “He had a perfect finish.”

And Lezak got an awesome draft from Bernard foolishly swimming on the lane line.
All relays face the same conditions Lezak did, yet he still has the fastest split.
Lezak out swam everyone who entered the pool that day
That '10 Pianos' was U Phelps. Just having U there is terrifying. Only deleting the thought of your presence, would have freed him up.
Well i say Jason lezak won it
Phelps set an American record in the lead leg and he never even swam the 100 free at trials. He played just as big of a role as lezak no matter how you wanna look at it.
losers focus on winners, winners focus on winning.
In other words, they CHOKED
Lezak also won it. There is no such thing as giving away a race. It was a choke by Bernard
Lezak = Legend. That's what won.
C’mon, Jason lezak is the soul reason why Phelps got 8 gold medals instead of 7. Give Jason more respect than that smh

WHAT A DISGUSTING ACT
I feel like Phelps is taking away from what Lezak did there. Bernard swam a sub 47 split, it's not like he went slow. 🤷♂️
Actually crucial was the distance between them - the Frenchie was too close to the divider and the Yankee smartly got close to it to get the draft. But what most people do not know is that when you are being helped drafting off somebody - it slows down the person upfront! Physics!
Why isn’t Michael praising Lezak more than he is criticizing Bernard? Seems odd…
Micheal , water is god for you
I find this statement so disrespectful in multiple ways.
Well get over it. 🤷🏼♂️
I wonder how he has managed to stay in shape. He must have developed bad habits eating 10,000 calories/day during peak training!
lol that was definitely not true😂
I French CANNOT be trusted!!
He’s just mad he wasn’t the reason why they won
Pretty arrogant to not recognize Lezak
pretty stupid to think that phelps' comments are mutually exclusive with lezak's split being extraordinary
