Rex & Daniel sample a [very pleasant] bourbon from 'Bama of all places while discussing the importance of the Ice Lord title.
Thanks to Stephen Salter for the bottle. Cheers you MB!
Woohoo, Alabama Whiskey making an appearance! Glad to see y'all enjoyed that, Dettling is doing some really cool stuff. The single barrel (with a couple different varieties) is phenomenal and has become one I always keep on hand. They have an 80 proof bourbon that is fine, simple but fine, and makes for a much better entry level bourbon.
Hey Henry, I'm trying to get a hold of bottle but I have no luck. I was wondering if you might be able to help me out.
Im actually in Atmore AL right now. So glad you guys finally got Dettling on the channel. I toured the distillery last Friday and I can tell you Seth is working magic in southern Alabama. Im definitely a fan. If you get the opportunity to get a bottle of this years BIB release pick it up you will not regret it.
$120 was a little steep but have heard great things. Didn't get to pick one up before they sold out.
“Out of sheer stubbornness Rex would win” haha!! 😂
I too, was made in Alabama. Our craft beer has exploded onto the scene in recent years, but I had no idea we had a Whiskey; now I gotta try.
Several whiskies but dettling is the best by far. John Emerald is ok and Dread River/ Cahaba are still in the works.
@@jonathanflowers472 Clyde May’s/Conecuh Ridge Distillery just broke ground in Troy. I like Clyde May’s bourbon but I’m just happy that it will no longer be outsourced from Indiana. Plus, I grew up in Troy and went to school with Clyde’s grandson so I’m a bit biased.
Finally! I heard you guys mention this alabama whiskey during the podcast and was afraid you weren't going to upload a review!
Edit: I just DM'd big_escambia_spirits (maker of Dettling) on instagram and Seth Dettling replied in 14 minutes. He said that you can get Dettling ordered to any ABC store, and there's a list of 25 stores on their facebook page that has Dettling on display. I'm going to pick some up today!
Don't you dare taking mine lol
I luckily picked one up for like $130 at my local store. It was locked behind a cabinet and they haven’t had anymore in since I bought it. I’ve been cherishing it ever since.
I first tried Dettling some time ago and fell in love with it....made with local grains from farm to bottle. I prefer the barrel strength as displayed here. It’s proudly served at the Grand Hotel and other fine establishments. It’s also proudly served from my cabinet as well.
Thanks for getting this out in front! Watched a YT tour the other day, and man, I WANT SOME!!!!
TheBrewzle video? That's how I discovered them.
So I went out and bought the Dettling cask strength after seeing this episode. My bottle is 36 months old and rings in at 54.1 ABV. The nose is wonderful - By far the best nose of any whiskey I've had. The whole experience is amazing. The finish for me ends with a barrel char note, very much like a subdued version of licking a burnt piece of wood. I do not mean for that to sound offputting in any way at all. I actually quite like it.
DETTLING® IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN ALABAMA, GEORGIA, FLORIDA, ILLINOIS, MARYLAND, DELAWARE, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. (according to their website)
I agree about the Dettlings. I have a the barrel proof and it’s excellent. He’s just released a bottled in bond 100 proof. It’s on my want list right now.
Welcome back, you guys were missed.
So happy To see Dettling! The stuff is great!
My favorite.
did someone put the Laphroaig bottle back on the signature shelf again? lol
Emma strikes again!
I think it's an on older video they archived and just posted. Notice they didn't mention coming off of dry week.
@@miscacakanis6426 The 18 not the 10.
I have the standard proof on my shelf right now and I have to say, one of my favorite whiskeys!
"It's a hallow throne" is my favorite Daniel quote to date. Cheers, you magnificent bastard.
Having lived in both Colorado and Texas, I can confirm the coldest Texas winter pales in comparison to colder climates. BUT, on the other hand, a full on Texas summer is FAR WORSE than you can imagine. You get a one-two punch of the skin-charring sun, and the sauna-like blast of humidity. Add in the swarms of mosquitoes, and you've got a smorgasbord of unhappy. I miss cold....
I would much rather be cold than hot PLUS BUGS ewww
@@Arassar I love watching RUclips videos of folks from Europe (or pretty much anyone outside the US) come to Texas for the first time. They all say the same thing: it's HOT! lol
Sounds like it is time for a field trip to Alabama... Hopefully they would accommodate a tour some time for you guys.
Seth Dettling is doing some awesome craft whiskey things in ‘Bama, and makes what I’d say is a real Alabama whiskey, versus some of the Alabama brands...but not really Alabama made.
The thing about this specific Whisky is that it was 100% Alabama grain, distilled, and aged. They followed the Alabama laws to make an Alabama Bourbon. I've got a bottle from when My buddy was up in Alabama.
Man, when a whiskey tasting note includes: "3-piece suit and light live jazz and the clinking of glasses".. I missed you guys!
So glad to see an Alabama Whiskey on the channel. Roll Tide.
Roll Damn
I love this single barrel bourbon. It always blows people away when I have them try it. Crafty yet refined. Great with a high end cigar like the Fuente Don Carlos I paired it with tonight.
I just tried a bottle of this last night at a bottle share party. Delicious!
I just did a charity Barrel pick with Dettling bourbon on Feb 4th 2023. And holy shit its so delicious!!!
62month
115proof(it dont drink it )
Double oaked White wheat mashbill
I might add im from Alabama and have been drinking dettling since they started in 2017.
I'm gonna get douchey here. Being from Northern Michigan, wind chill in the teens is spring weather. I used to take a shower get ready for school go to the bus stop and wait for the bus with wet hair. My hair would be frozen by the time the bus got there. -10°F was normal.
That's not cold. I'm on the Western Canadian prairies. -40 before windchill values is common.
@@GrizzAxxemann been there and still walked to school lol. uphill both ways
Yup. Also from MI and now in MN, I always have to chuckle when they mention it being cold. We used to have challenges of who can remain buried in snow in nothing but a pair of boxers the longest. You game, Rex?!
@@bobfarr8822 My hometown was on a hill. I actually could go up hill both ways between home and school!
Rex is nothing if not all about the hollow victory. Ice Lord, indeed. Get him up to Minnesota in February in the middle of a polar front, and we'll talk.
Gotta love the cask strength.
I'm going to keep commenting this until it happens. We need a video for the feature wall!!!
On the Tribe channel, their "Top Irish" or "Top Bourbon" videos are running down the votes tallied by the community. The number 1 pick on each of those videos is what goes on the wall. The rest are placeholders as picked by Daniel a few months back based on personal taste.
I'm living in Bama and have passed this up many times. Seems I've made a mistake.
All this talk about “The Ice Lord” is interesting. Just thinking allll the way back to Last winter, and Rex bemoaning that he may not survive the week because they had a dusting of snow one day.
Literally almost tried this yesterday and didn’t... I’m pissed. Greetings from Alabama✌🏻
Polar Bear - Milwaukee Wisconsin, Lake Michigan, New Years Day... that makes an Ice Lord.
Sault Ste Marie Michigan. Lake Superior New years day makes the Ice King.
I have done a couple of Polar Bear Plunges up near Green Bay, WI.... Yeah... you uonly feel the cold once, and then nothing at all! Till you get out! DAMN! Come spend a winter waiting for the bus up here!
I have a bottle of that and it is very good. Fairly unique.
I just picked up a bottle of this yesterday while in Mobile and it is great. I have the proofed down version too and it is also great yet a bit different. The standard version always gives me dry roasted peanut notes and there is a bit of that in the cask strength but expands in a new direction. I recommend getting both if you have the means.
Guys, the Ice Lord contest may need more than just one layer or note. Yes, the ice bath, but something taste-physiological warfare centric. While in the bath, each of you has to drink a lineup of iced whiskeys from the vault. Daniel picks a line-up of what Rex has to drink, and Rex does likewise. By the way, nothing in the vault is off-limits. Examples for Daniel the leadoff maybe Fireball on ice, and works up to something that follows the letter "L." Each contestant is told what comes next and has to watch ice being applied to their next challenge.
If I can find it this one it will be my first bottle of bourbon. Thanks for the review.
Emma has been in the vault again.
Seth is the man !
"it woke the wood up on the nose" Rex Williams 2020
Just looked at there website, they're only distributing to Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Delaware, and Wash DC. Hopefully they expand some this sounds excellent.
Surprisingly, there’s a fair amount of whiskey coming out of Alabama. Distribution is the problem. A lot of craft beer distilleries around here are actually making whiskey on the side (but we all know that usually turns out sub par...but not ALWAYS). And there’s local distillers that don’t even distribute to to stores. Iron One in Huntsville comes to mind.
Anyways, you’ve tried Clyde Mays, you’ve had Dettling, now you need to try John Emerald Single Malt Whiskey which is from Opelika, next to Auburn.
Fellow Huntsvillian?
Hunter Decaturite! But I go to Huntsville all the time!
"single digit cold chill..." Montanans laugh and laugh.
my week of whiskey drought made me get reacquainted with my wine fridge. Forgot what nice wines I have. thank you guys
jerry cox What! Im a winemaker and considered dry week DRY week...
Watched this and had to find it!!! Message the distillery on Instagram and they sent me to the store that had it. They also told me about special mashbill made with white wheat. It’s amazing also.
Hey I messaged the distiller too but they don't distribute here in Texas, I was wondering if it's possible that you can help find a bottle for me
I am a lover of all things bourbon and looked this one up. Found it on Internet Wines.... wonder if they will deliver to WI?!?! Also, if you want to be an Ice Lord, you must come up to WI in the dead of winter and experience -20F. I have skiied in that and spent many a school day awaiting a bus at that temperature! Come, challenge the Ice Folk you Texas Ninnies! lol
If y’all haven’t already I’d love to see a Ezra brooks distillers collection review!!
Daniel has enough stories to last 102 years.
They’re supposed to be coming out with a bottled in bond later this year
I was wondering if you guys would be lucky enough to get one of these bottles. Its first ever run and the first ever 100% Alabama bourbon from Alabama sourced grains, and Alabama distilled and aged. My buddy brought me back a bottle when they did their opening release !! Cheers !!!
so i joined the tribe a month or 2 ago and went back and watched every episode ,i have like 120 or so left. Daniels's knowledge is what drew me to the channel but rexes shenanigans' are what made we want to go back and see everything so i felt like i had a good idea of what was going on. and now that I've made a long enough comment to catch yalls attention and petted both or your egos enough i can ask my question and hopefully receive an answer. lol. how and why haven't yall reviewed Kilkerran 12 yet?! or have i somehow missed it? ive seen a Kilkerran review but it wasnt the 12. what gives? i hope its coming soon. love the channel and keep up the good work.
I'm from Alabama and tried Dettling maybe a year or two ago. It was their normal run, not the cask strength. I have to say, I thought the taste was really off. It came across as super grainy like a lot of cheap bourbons. It could have been when they were first starting off, and their bourbons were just too young. Anyone else have this experience?
I've had both their regular and the cask strength. They're uncomparable. The regular 80 proof is undrinkable for me, honestly. The cask strength is one of the best I've ever had. Amazing that they came from the same place.
Right around the corner from me and i didn't know it existed. I have to try this.
First vault video I've watched in like a year, and I see a bourbon I yearn for but likely will never find. DAMN YOU BOYS! still love you guys though....
Regardless of taste, I sort of just want that bottle to put on the shelf. Alabama makes whiskey. It just doesn’t necessarily qualify as legal or make it to age. Lol.
Cool looking bottle
ECBP is ALL herbal and grass? Are you sure that was what you were drinking? Which batch was that?
Hey whats that over your shoulder??? Oh look Laphroaig on the shelf again.
Brother, your liquor is very good. And the milk here is very good.
A luxurious bourbon with notes of rich Corinthian leather.
I have this bottle very good.
I'm 73 years old now and I've been drinking whiskey since I was fifteen years old, and during my nearly sixty years of drinking I've known a lot of people who are hardcore drinkers, and my opinion about bourbon is that people who drink bourbon when they could be drinking brandy, cognac, or tequila, are like guys who by Harley's when they could by a bullet bike.
Rex the Amber, Ice Lord of the South Reach.
Finally a whisky I can find and get!
"It wakes up the wood on the nose". Nobody wants morning wood on the nose Rex!
looks like the Laphroaig found it's way back to the quintessential wall.
OMG I know all about that never lose thing. I hate to lose! HATE IT! I will do whatever it takes to win as well!!
Why when you put the water in, it is just a drop or two. What does that little water do over, putting a little more in there.
Dropped a motorcycle once. Wasn't mine, wasn't on it. Scored the winning shot in beer pong and victoriously/accidentally backed into it
Daniel: "GET OFF LAWN, WHIPPERSNAPPERS!"
Which expression is that bottle? I looked and they have five different expressions.
Would this not also be categorized as a rare bottle?
Can you review pendleton 1910? It's a 12 year canadian rye
4:07 the mooch lives on
How would Balcones Mirador compare?
I want to see Rex go for the record!
On 26 January 2007, Hof set a world record for fastest half marathon barefoot on ice and snow, with a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 34 seconds.[12]
Hof has set the world record for longest time in direct, full-body contact with ice a total of 16 times,[13] including 1 hour, 42 minutes and 22 seconds on 23 January 2009;[14] 1 hour, 44 minutes in January 2010;[15] and 1 hour 53 minutes and 2 seconds in 2013.[13] This was surpassed in 2014 by Songhao Jin of China, with a time of 1 hour, 53 minutes and 10 seconds;[16] and surpassed in 2019 by Josef Köberl of Austria, with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 47 seconds.[17]
Cosmic Bunghole!!!!
So Rex is also the spite lord?
it'd be weird if Daniel was 41 headed to anything other than 42
Good Morning Gentlemen.
Okay, the ice Lord should be done with two or three mouths full of ice and then a blind whiskey tasting no nose and who ever gets it right is the undisputed Ice Lord!!!
"back when weed was grass" I use that term a lot
If I want to send them a whiskey what should I do?
We have like 3 distilleries, John Emrald was the first distillery. It had an amazing single malt but then their distiller left, owners are idiots, and now its lackluster
I hate to hear that. I just moved to Oxford, AL and I really wanna try some Emerald. I got my hands on cask strength Clyde May's and I enjoy it alot.
How close is it to Woodinville
Interesting...
Ice Lord challenge, needs to be done without each other knowing how long each other stays in
Turkey "Rare Breed" sounds like it would be close to it.
Why not try to mix a combination to match the nose and taste?
I am first. Hello from BELARUS 👻
I thought that bourbon can by definition only come from Kentucky.
I have to wonder how much of this excitement is because they just came off of dry week. lol
makers mark cask strength ?
Rex is the bitter finish, he was looking for.....
How much? And how do I get it?
Long lost cousin of mine
4. Here
was dry week last week?
Isn’t Clyde May an Alabama whiskey?
No, its sourced whiskey.
Rex you're just a try hard while Daniel has this glorious thing called apathy.
All i have are sad notes of Tears
