  • I didn't realize that putting prop guards on my DJI Mini 4 Pro would disable obstacle Avoidance, but I found out real quickly. But just in case, I tried it again.

That was my learning experience as well. Flight number 3 with my new drone, I flew it sideways into the top of a very tall tree with the propeller guards on and thought I had lost my new drone. Find My Drone led me directly to it and it was not hurt.

Yeah, when it said "Propeller guards detected. Flight performance lowered to ensure flight safety", I didn't know it meant disabling obstacle avoidance. Nice of them to not let me know! 😡

Holy crap, Gary! You did a great job avoiding those trees especially with no obstacle avoidance. Why the heck was it off? It’s almost like you’d rather fly without the guards if they’re gonna screw up the OA, eh! Not cool DJI! But awesome demo man.

Thanks Kev! Yeah, I had no idea the prop guards would disable OA! I guess I didn't take the hint with the first hit, but she sure banged into that tree trunk! LOL
Then I thought she might miss me flying at my face! 😱 But it still showed OA was turned on. DJI should've given us a warning that the guards would disable OA, not just "Flight performance lowered". 😡

LOL I still have egg on my face for recommending prop guards to you Gary! I haven't checked, but I'm wondering if the prop guards are visible or partially visible to the OA cameras such that the OA software is simply ignoring or confused by what it 'sees'. 😲😭🙄

You're right, Jimbo, I hadn't thought of checking the sensor cams. I just tried it in my man cave, and you can clearly see the prop guards in the left & right views only. LOL Oh well, it was a great idea that I hadn't thought of. I can still use them on low slow flights, as I can get closer to the ground without the AO keeping me from getting that close. Thanks for the suggestion. As I said, I'm still having fun doing all these test, including the one I just did in my man cave. 😊😅👍

For the drone to do precision landing it can’t be close to objects or the sensors will prevent it from Landon on the pad

I believe the landing pad is far enough away from other objects in the center of the deck, which it has done a few times, but I need to go up to 21 feet over the pad to have it align properly. I didn't go high enough. The prop guards might have been part of the problem also.
