@@Warmaster00 Caspar's problem is that he's probably the worst unit early game. He doesn't have anything to make him relevant like Ferdinand's personal skill or Petra's speed, and his base stats are also only ok at best. He does get better, but early game maddening is the hardest part, so he needs a lot of babying to get there. Even then, he's not some sleeper top-tier when he reaches his best. He's still only an ok unit in comparison to a lot of other characters. I mean sure, he becomes a beast if you put him in war master, but that can be said about literally any physical unit that becomes a war master.

@@Warmaster00 ok, I think you're focusing a little too much on the speed part here. Honestly, if your name isn't Petra, Leonie, Felix or Ingrid eventually, you're getting doubled on Maddening. The problem is that he doesn't get anything to compensate. Raphael at least starts out with good strength, as well as Dedue who also has great defense. Caspar just falls in the middle of the road here. Yes, he has gauntlets, but Gauntlets are actually really weak on their own. They need either high strength to really get any meaningful damage, or high speed to quad. Caspar doesn't really have either of these things. Even then, it's not like Gauntlets are exclusive to him. Every strength you pointed out with gauntlets apply to anyone early game. In fact, having at least one super light weapon on your front liner is recommended. But even then, Caspar's late game isn't anything super impressive either. His growths aren't really all that amazing or anything, and the combat arts he learns aren't anything fancy either outside of Bombard. He's by no means unusable, but he's just underwhelming compared to the rest of the cast

2:30 If the game can add a scout/ranger class specialized in enemy/trap detection skills that increase range based on dex or skill, then I think the player can know where ambush spawns come from. The enemy detect skill will highlight ambush tiles with a skull or some other symbols for 2 turns before it expires. The scout class can also detect traps, treasures, locked doors, special terrains, and other objects of interest. I have this idea because why not? I should probably post this in yesterday WAIFU video, but I just thought of it and I'd rather just stay on this video and comment here. I suggest Leif for a WAIFU. It might be a few years too late because people appreciate Leif a lot more than they used to, but I still think he's interesting. His Light Brand helps him out a lot, and he's the only one that can use it so it really is his, unlike Callion and the Paragon Sword. And even though he promotes late, if you get both remaining gaidens you still have nine chapters with a promoted Leif, and eight chapters if you don't do 21x. And while his promotion bonuses are bad, he gains experience at the rate of an unpromoted unit, so it's not like you have to feed him extra kills to level him easily. Then there's the fact that Leif doesn't have to deal with fatigue and you don't have to use a Master Seal on him in a game where you're going to be using a lot more units than you will have Master Seals.
I'm not saying Leif is amazing, but I think he's an interesting unit. But like I said earlier, it might not make a good WAIFU because these days I think people like Leif as a unit more than they used to.

      I agree.
I did church route maddening, and there was a certain point where the frustration overtook the fun of the map.
It was the imperial city invasion, when the falcoknight reinforcements came, that I just decided I didn't want to spend two hours solving these maps anymore, so just warpskipped it. Then warpskipped Edelgard. Then warpskipped Thales. Didn't even bother finding out what those maps were gonna try, wanted nothing to do with it.
Didn't even miss the exp, since we were primarily leveling off of healing eachother in auxiliary battles anyways.
Also, the fact that my Dancer Sylvain was able to just facetank the immaculate one, then immediately regenerate it all back through passive healing, because he was like, level 56 from all the dancing rubbed in just how jacked progression in Maddening is.
There were a handful of fun maps in Maddening, the Mercedes paralogue with an underlevelled Mercedes and Caspar was... interesting, for example, but those were largely drowned out by the tediousness of it all. I did have a few pretty screwed units, Byleth was almost unusable post timeskip except as a healbot with convoy. Maybe it's fun if you get blessed ones? I dunno.
Also, can I get a bit of respect for getting a level 12 Dorothea and level 18 Caspar out of the first timeskip map in one piece, when my best characters were off-house? I planned on just letting them die if I had to, but I got 'em home.
Started my Blue Lions Awful Female Armor Knight run and that's so much fun by comparison.

A way I think they could use ambush spawns without them feeling cheap or balanced around divine pulse is to make thieves show up 3 turns into a map just to steal a chest. Or maybe in the dialogue before a chapter begins, one of the characters spots brigands climbing up a mountain in the distance so then the player know to worry about brigands from the mountains. Maybe one of the character could remark on how Pegasus seem to be flying in clumps so the player is subtly hinted that pegasus knights will show up later (those and wyverns tend to be the most brutal ambush spawns in most games). This would encourage players to pay attention to the dialogue before battles begin as well as making ambushes a lot less cheap.
Hard mode is probably the best difficulty in the game right now even though it is fairly easy

She's going to get taken down to 1HP. Which is when she really gets good.

Beruka? She was good. She crit real nice. If she were in this game she'd be amazing, considering the ease of access to death blow and crit boosters.
But Edelgard is in this game, and can get something like 80% chance crit on a lightning axe with 100% crit smashes. Which is bolstered by the fact that she does a ton of damage without critting.

Honestly, I don't think ambush spawns is even the worst the game does. The spawns that happen when entering certain tiles are way worse. They are usually okay when they happen at the start of your turn, but if they come at the end of your turn, because you decided to push just a little too far, you are basically fucked. At least ambush spawns only spawn a small amount of units. But these spawns can sometimes spawn a dozen or more units right in your face.
The only reason I managed to go through the Seteth-Flayn chapter is the good wiki that lists the exact columns and rows Flayn and her Falcon Knights spawn.
These spawns are just way too plentiful and way too unpredictable to be considered fair.

Only route that I haven't finished in maddening by now is Blue Lions because I wanted to save one of my fav routes for last. Although Maddening can be kind of bs sometimes and tedious (mostly in the beginning), I feel that the game at its core is so fun that having a difficulty in which 95% of what you do actually matters feels really good and it keeps you on your toes. Divine pulse plays a huge role in making you more willing to deal with random ambush spawns and the like, and I often try to imagine how it would be if divine pulse wasn't a thing in this game, which leads me to a big oof. I think that the only map in which ambush spawns are actually used for the benefit of the flow of the maps is CH14 (all routes except CF) because it makes you hold a defensive line to wait for the green unit to put the enemy on fire, and then advance. If more maps were to use this type of design with reinforcements, I think that ambush spawns could be a bit more tolerable. This coming from a guy that absolutely hates ambush spawns so take it as you may.

  • @lanceareadbhar
    @lanceareadbhar 4 года назад +9

The ambush spawns in this game are really poorly designed in my opinion. It would be one thing if they spawned where you start on turn 5 or later to push you forward or at a place ahead of where you are supposed to be early in the map as a surprise to keep you on your toes. But this game is like, wait until the player enters a zone, and spring the reinforcements right next to them. It's okay to do this, because they have divine pulse...

The early game is particularly tedious because all the enemy units have more movement than your units. The game becomes much fairer once you reach level 10 across the board, but until then you have no offensive maneuvers at all. There is also the issue with mages having half the uses in the base classes.
On another note, Shamir, Bernadetta and Ignatz were the best units in my run. With Hunter's Volley, a Killer Bow+, and a crit rate in the 70-80, they are some of the few units capable of reliably one-rounding opponent's, even the Fortress Knights scissors-beat-rock style. Bernadetta even one-rounded Dimitri without taking a scratch. Dex-Snipers are probably one of the most underrated builds in the game.
Maybe you can consider WAIFU on on specific unit archetypes? For example, War Master gets a lot of praise from a lot of players for being powerful, but in no run have I ever found the skill point investment worth the trouble in the end; most of the points are wasted because you only ever use one type of weapon at the time. On the other end of the spectrum, Dex-Sniper gets almost no exposure despite being able to reliably one-round almost any unit in the game. I can confirm that it is actually possible to reach S+ in a weapon type in the early part 2 if you hyper-focus early on - all of them eventually mastered S+ bows.

It's a fantastic endgame class, Quick Riposte single handedly made Raphael go from "can survive one enemy phase exposed" to "can survive as many enemy phases as he needs to exposed".
To be fair, that Raphael did channel mangs at times, and misread his own 30ish % crit rate as 100%.
I also think it's fair that not many characters besides Raphael can survive being a grappler, let alone also being a bishop.

    • @AnhTuanNguyen-jf8ld
      @AnhTuanNguyen-jf8ld 4 года назад +1

@@aprinnyonbreak1290 I don't find Quick Riposte that compelling of a skill. Assuming you are strong enough to actually kill the enemy with a second attack, you usually lose it after the first counter because everything on Maddening hits like a truck. If I wanted to have an enemy phase killer, I'd go with Vantage/Wrath and bows instead (Cyril, Ashe, Petra, Claude, Anna). Unlike Quick Riposte, which can only kill the first opponent, they can obliberate anything else but the first opponent with little setup thanks to Adjutant Guard letting them survive almost for sure; also unlike them they can counter everything with 3-range Killer Bow+. War Masters usually also have access to Vantage/Wrath (requires D+ swords), but no access to the Sniper class which would have allowed them to oppose enemy archers. You basically put 960 skill points into gauntlets to kill the first enemy more efficiently, which could have been put into a skill that counters all these pesky arrows instead.

It was definitely designed to be played after you had done a route previously, which I didn't do the first time around and suffered as a result. Playing Maddening a 2nd time on a route I've already done was much more manageable.
I also recommend sending someone down the armor path to get Great Knight. Units who will always be doubled anyway don't care about the SPD loss, and I found having someone who can actually tank hits (especially enemy gauntlet bros) was great. It's somewhat bothersome to deal with a 4mov unit, but especially post-timeskip having a proper frontline helped significantly with maps I couldn't simply 1-turn cheese.

Because it was my first run ever through Azure Moon (I played Hard Crimson Flower > Hard NG+ Verdant Wind then Maddening Azure Moon, not recruting students from any other houses in any playthrough, only using original students + staff members), I had lots of..."surprises", especially in the form of random reinforcements.
The last 3 chapters in that path are particulatly awful, because of the ridiculous amount of siege spam. The final boss literally chases you with it for the entire final chapter until you finally step into the main chamber, by wich point 4 mages spawn with bolting/meteor and more reinforcements start to come periodically lmao.I legit didn't see at the time how that find could be beaten without Ingrid dodge tanking the entire map.
It took me like 10 tries, even using rewinds to beat it, in the second to last try I managed to clear the entire place and finally get to the boss without any losses but that thing one shot everything I had so I couldn't find a way to kill it and I got a game over just from fighting it lmao.
After looking for a way to kill it I finally figured out about the Sacred Guard gambit, and god, it made the fight so trivial it made me feel like a complete idiot for never realizing it was there. It was sort of a cool moment though, in a way that I realized that if I had paid more atention to my options I would have had an easier time in the 2 previous chapters as well most likely.Took me 77 turns to beat last chapter anyway though lmao.

It wasn't hard, just agonizingly slow. I only had to pulse like, five times, and one of those was me figuring out that stopping reinforcements aggros the map. The rest were crits, and one time joycon drift made me wait instead of attacking something.

It quickly became tedious though because of the grinding. The Monastery is a drag, auxiliary battles are a drag, and fishing was especially a drag. But at least my fully optimized team was a thing of beauty. Nothing like an entire team of OP flying and mounted units.

I tried a run of maddening where I used all of my units and didn't make it past chapter 4 or 5 or so. When I tried a run where I only used 3 or 4 units, I found the maps a hell of a lot *easier* to complete, less turtlish, and spent less gold keeping my units well equipped. I genuinely think the game gets a lot easier if you don't use all your deployment slots, and it makes the adjutant system more valuable as well, since it covers many of your few actually used units... And monastery you can siphon all the training into those few units as well. But that all may just be my opinion.

Leonie ends up being slept on by most, unfortunately. She has only one bad stat in res, and despite Petra being considered faster (despite a literal point difference), she's ironically far more reliable with doubling thanks to Point-Blank Volley (seriously, this move is so good it makes Cyril a sleeper high tier character). But seriously, Leonie's the most underappreciated character in the entire game in every conceivable way

    • @OnlineVideoSurfer
      @OnlineVideoSurfer 4 года назад +4

@@isaiah204 Is Leonie so underappreciated? I thought most people who played Maddening rank her very highly. I know I've promoted her. Her surprisingly high early defense of 7 combined with her personal skill boosting her defense and offense is what I think allows her to snowball. She's an almost necessary tank for early Golden Deer with effectively the highest defense, naturally moves to soldiers for more defense and a great skill, then just goes wild after that with Pegasus. Lances and bows are probably the best weapons on Maddening for most of the game, and she has neutral proficiency on everything else you want too. Dodge tank with lances, or kill important units with Point-Blank Volley. In my opinion she's probably the contender for best student, and that's saying a lot considering her competition.

I've only seen people downplay her, so it might be bias on my part, but I say she's a top 5 non-Lord character, if not 3. If I'm being totally honest, the sleeper top tier is Ferdinand.

Leonie, Raphael, and Lysithea were my only characters capable of consistently onerounding. Petra could also, but would often be crippled by the counterattack, so couldn't do it consistently.
Byleth got screwed to the point of being a healbot with convoy, Caspar, Hilda, and Seteth were nearly dead weight, only being held up by their wyverns, Bernadetta was actually dead weight, and I had a decent Lindheardt, and weird screwed/blessed Ferdinand that was so, so jank. Probably my most fun unit, honestly.
This was on church route, btw. The last stage took me almost 200 turns, since half my team had to deathsquad the respawning white beast so the rest could clear the rest if the map.
Leonie got literally ever MVP for post timeskip maps, except the ones Lysithea got, which were only ones I skipped and just nuked the boss, and the final map, which Raphael got for killing so many white beasts, since he was the anchor of the deathsquad.

Ambush spawns are my biggest issue with maddening mode, especially in paralogue or in fog maps. You get used to the poison strike archers, pass thieves, and vantage snipers because you learn to check for skills. But if you didn't know that 5 units would pop out of nowhere when you reach this particular corridor, then you're screwed either way. It's very unbalanced and frustrating to deal with ambush enemies. They definitely needed to balance this difficulty better. And some paralogue are extremely annoying as a result.
It's nice that they offer a minor reward for beating maddening without NG+ because it's an accomplishment but it doesn't really take away anything if you don't care about maddening. So it's a nice balance win/win: those who like NG+ don't miss out on anything either way, and those who want the achievement have an incentive to play a harder mode difficulty without the NG+ crutch.
Side note: I don't think Aymr makes Edelgard the best unit in the game. Best unit in crimson flower for sure, for a combination of factors. But not the best overall.

The ambush spawns are stupid. It isn't fun or challenging, it's just frustrating. The same can be said about the crit rates. You have to constantly pray that enemies won't crit you, which is again, incredibly frustrating. Ambush spawns are rarely a good thing, and Maddening is basically Ambush Spawns The Game. I wish Three Houses had fights more like the older games, in which it took 2 or 3 rounds of combat to kill an average unit. to be honest, maddening gave me similar feels on my first playthrough on NG BL run, I recently finished a NG BE maddening no recruits run (also, obviously no DLCs, no online and no aux battles spam) tho and I have to say I don't really agree 100% with what you said, asides from same turn reinforcements which are still a pretty cheap move I'd say maddening is pretty decently balanced, in fact I think it's actually too easy, there are tons of mechanic you can abuse to make the game easy, it's just that on early playthroughs they are not quite as obvious (which is why in my first maddening experience I had almost your exact thoughts myself)
enemies stat inflation only really matters in the early game, once you hit intermediate classes a lot of options open up and your units start to catch up, and in the timeskip your (few good) combat units should be already trained well enough to be able to take on even the unga bunga units that maddening throws at you (be it through gardening stat boosters or skills)
Judging from your gameplay footage I think you got speed screwed on some of your units (Byleth, Felix with 27 speed wtf, even Petra I think should be a little faster) and/or forgot to feed them speed carrots/stat boosters, and judging by your weapon ranks I'd say your tutoring was kinda wishy washy (again, not your fault as this was your first maddening playthough and I kinda did the same), so I think I really understand where your opinion comes from
yeah, the map design could really be improved but I really don't feel like maddening was poorly balanced or filled with cheap tricks

Thracia actually did ambush spawns pretty well. chapter 4 is a pattern that most of the ambush spawns follow. They spawn around turn 7, starting off one at a time. None of them have the damage to one round kill any of your units, and Thracia's enemies will often capture your units instead of killing them. Not to mention the fact that they continue to spawn in predictably.
You get dark mages that spawn too far away from you to attack, so they'll spend their turn rewarping closer to your army, which ends their turn. Basically acting like normal reinforcements.
The only truly bad example I can think of ambush spawns in Thracia is chapter 20, where a couple of ballista spawn with range up to the courtyard (still far away from the actual objective you have to defend), and if you have any frail units/fliers there they can be killed. The caveat being you could just beat the chapter before they spawn, and it's towards the end of the game, when you have the resources and strength to do so.

I went through Maddening as soon as it came out on the evil path, and while I did NG+ a lot of the same frustrations held true still. When I didn't get the golden shower after that, it was a bit irksome, because it's not as though NG+ just lets you beat Maddening as though it was nothing. Especially if you're using a house you have no previous supports/skills for. The status update I made after that disappointment was, "Intelligent Systems really wants me to FISH AGAIN for 84 hours to get a golden screen? Hell nah."
I didn't get Jeritza cause he wasn't out yet. My only OP unit was my Byleth(named Tyr). I did recruit everyone that I possibly could but I stuck to Black Eagles for the most part due to the first post timeskip map.
I wound up using Leonie, Felix, Mercedes, Dorothea, Linhardt, Lysithea, Edelgarde, Ferdie, Caspar, Ingrid, and Petra. Petra was my dancer, she's always my dancer. Dorothea was a back up healer/mage. Edelgarde I made into a Swordmaster. I couldn't get her reason high enough to make her into a mortal savant by the end, so she stayed a swordmaster. Basically that let her double most enemies, even late into the game, and swordfaire with Silver Sword+ really let her test the limit. It did make her a bit fragile and kinda low mobility, but I had an extra stride on Dorothea to make up for it.
My guard adjutants were Alois and I think that's it? I didn't really start noticing the value of having them till pretty late game, and by then it was kinda late to set someone else in with no/low support from another house.
For the first half the game I laughed in NG+ Byleth with stat enhancing items shoved directly into him everytime I got one from gardening/DLC etc. I even ended some maps prematurely, which wasn't worth it, mainly for my other units losing out on class mastery skill points. I did silly things like warp him directly to Kronya so that we would get surrounded after she died. FIrst half of the game was good fun, cause it was NG+ and we had Super Byleth, and I had enough skill points via extra AP/BP/renown on Leonie/Felix/Mercedes/Lysithea that they had mid/late game spells like Warp/access to Silver weapons.
Post timeskip everything slowed down, and units who had been durable and good pre-timeskip stopped being that way. Notable was Ferdinand. Mine got jacked in the first half of the game on defense and speed. He was nigh unkillable, but post time skip he didn't really go anywhere with defense and his offense was so sorely lacking that I specced him into Assassin for Lethality. Edelgarde stayed beefy the whole game, but I wasted her Aymur on paralogue trash... and she got to be slightly fragile cause her defense wasn't so hot on swordmaster. Leonie stayed solid the whole time, and would probably have been my best unit if not for the NG+ roid raging Byleth that I created (Tyr is a god of war). But in that second half of the game, Maddening was laughing at me, because Super Byleth could not solo the late maps or even the paralogues like Turtle Map. Not even close. He could cut a bloody swathe through say, 4 or 5 units, but even with Lifedrain and mythril specialty weapons and stuff, he'd run outta steam and need back up, so I pretty much wound up clumping my group anyway. Just seeing the final map again kind of triggered me. I hate those freaking falconknight ambush units.
I would have to look at my file again, which I can't do atm, to see all the classes I had for each person by the end, but it breaks down to something like:
    Edelgarde - Swordmaster
    Ferdie - Assassin
    Dorothea - Grimorie
    Lysithea - Grimorie
    Mercedes - Grimorie
    Linhardt - Bishop
    Petra - Dancer
Byleth(Tyr) - Whatever I needed him to be based on what the map was. He literally was super Byleth. He could be whatever I wanted, though I tended to stick him with Wyvern Lord or Warmaster.
    Leonie - Bow Knight
Felix - Mortal Savant cause I'm a basic bitch
    Caspar - Warmaster
Ingrid - Falcoknight or Paladin depending on map.
Someday when I'm real bored or have nothing better to do, I might go back through Blue Lions on Maddening NG for Golden Shower, but I can't tell you how much I hate knowing that I will have to redo fishing for prof rank. That takes longer than anything else!
Stuff I liked about Maddening was that shields became pretty useful due to most of my units having low low speed. If I knew they were going to get double anyway, the 4 defense or res helped immensely, especially early. Did a lot of unequip, reequip. Definitely went all in on the class skills. Those make or break you, but I didn't look anything up and didn't really have knowledge of what gives what, so I just sorta had to work with what little I did know and so my skillsets were far from optimized. I got Hit+20 on all my frontliners though. Gotta get that hit rate. Can't afford missing.

I am doing Maddening mode right now. I am not sure if it has been fixed since it was released or not, but it feels like some battles its just Byleth rampage and everyone else drops dead. The ambush spawn are a pain, they sometimes feel like they take away from situation. THis is my 1st ever maddening mode attempt, so it could be just me not being used to it/

I just ended up using Mercedes as a dancer. As it actually let's her still cast spells and is useful if she's got nothing else to do.

I wish Constitution and rescue were in this game. I put Three Houses down after playing through 2 routes to play FE6 and I now I think I'mma have a hard time going back without that mechanic it's amazing.

Rescue would have been nice, but Con is unbalanced in it's distribution. Granted, the 5 str requirement to lower weight by 1 is pretty dumb as it do not benefit mages...

@@AkameGaKillfan777 Flayn is great to save time but the rescue feature of the GBA games to pick a unit up and transport them across the map or to the hands of another unit is its own amazing feature entirely.

@@AkameGaKillfan777 I might be the only one who thinks Rescue > Warp. You also get 3 Rescues by default, 6 with Bishop/Gremory, compared to 2 Warps. Flayn can rescue you from half the map later in the game. I love to Stride then Rescue the poor unit who was left behind.

Yeah, Aux battle for mastery is dumb. I don't like it at all, but you have that option now and it's really good. You can take both +10 hit and death blow without any consequences, and that dramatically increases the incentive to grind.
The cool part is that you can get to play with full builds way before you reach the last few maps (in GD route, atleast). The awful part is that you really need to min max your flier or swordmaster avoid build, just so you don't get rng screwed like crazy.

The only reason I would play Maddening is for a new title screen which isn’t even that big of a difference. Other than that the mode doesn’t seem fun. I’ll stick to NG+ and my green title screen.
