Chaka Khan has an impeccable sense of timing. All those skipping quick breaks these guys do, which comes with the so-called jazz category, Chaka Khan is RIGHT THERE verbatim with all these guys doing all these clever jazz stops and sliding into the next sections or whatever. That means that not only is Chaka Khan singing along with these guys, but the vocals are actually part of the instrumentation as well. That is nothing but the result of sheer feel. VERY FEW singers, let alone anyone else, have that ability.
Chaka was ON POINT during this concert. Their are times i feel like she just screams when she hits her high notes. But when sang the Alphie song it was VERY well done. And as a singer myself i usually only give Dionne the props for doing that song justice. But Chaka did it very well.
This concert as well as her voice here is just simply flawless. Mark Smith I read your comment about you didn’t know that Chaka can sing jazz. Jazz is Chaka’s favorite genre of music. Remember she grew up on jazz. But in all honesty Chaka can sing anything and any genre of music. There is so much depth in her voice that it has no boundaries or limit. Unfortunately Chaka is so underrated and it’s so so sad because no one can hold a candle to her, absolutely no one. IMO she never got her full due credit and respect as she so well deserves. To piggyback on what you said Michael Donahue, a voice like Chaka’s voice comes around once in a lifetime. She follows the 3 greats that she truly adored, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Chaka completes the square and now it’s done. And the beauty is that these 4 great women brought something to the music scene that can never be created again. Each one of them brought something so special and different to their generation and era. If it does come around again like this, I am sure I will be long gone. But quite frankly I don’t see it happening. The singers today just don’t possess that pure, raw, organic, non manufactured talent like the singers of the past. Can I get a witness please? Enough said, Amen.
There's great and awesome voices continuously, wonderful, cute, standouts, but they are not clarions an human instrument (hope I'm not wrong on this matter) the instrument is called clarion a warning recognized in every language spoken, transcends realms, times, detentions, takes you to another plane, leveling you in oceans of inspiration easily deeply embedded soul fulfillment
Quincy Jones would disagree w you 100%. Chaka is truly a musician's musician & they all admire & respect her skills not only as a vocalist but as a vocal arranger as she does all her own parts when recording. She's worked w Quincy uncredited over the years doing a bit of this & that. Prince as you know had nothing but admiration for Chaka's chops. The truth is the general population doesn't "get" jazz & cannot hear the difference between someone as bland as Beyoncé & someone w such vocal timbre and richness & artistic ingenuity as Chaka.
what you mean she is underrated? everyone who needs to know that she is one of the greatest, knows it very well already for decades. And if there are people who do not see it that way, well... its their problem.
What a setlist! Joni FTW! Chaka Kahn is one of the all time GREATS!!!
