I had a Taiwanese girlfriend for over 4 years and can help you out with the winter clothes thing: 15-25 degrees could be cold to her. The other thing is that Taiwanese winter clothes LOOK like winter clothes, but won't actually keep you warm. Those long coats are actually very light. She found out the hard way when she came to Holland the first time during the winter and we had to buy new clothes.
Ear cleaning: asian people have either dry or wet ear wax. Caucasians usually have wet ear wax. Dry ear wax is easier to scoop, Q-tips are more useful for the wet type.

  • @ww75527
    @ww75527 3 года назад +8

    1.其實就像艾倫說的,是我們對於季節轉換的定義不一樣,當然,並不是所有的人,有一些經常運動、身體很強壯的人來說,他們也已經開始穿短袖了,只是社會大眾根據經驗和天氣預報,了解到仍然有冷氣團、早晚溫差仍然差距大,所以他們會習慣穿長袖,熱的時候捲起袖子就好。
    2.挖耳朵通常是家庭內自己或互相會做的事情,或是去提供服務的店,通常人們不太會在公共場進行,除非是當下有必要或很不舒服........................或這個人沒有公德心不愛惜公共場所的衛生保護、缺乏教養。
    3.台灣多數人民其實對外國人都不錯,特別是友善的外國人,或是看得出嘗試在融入台灣社會的外國人。這源自於我們喜歡認識新朋友,尤其是外國朋友。而且政府其實長久以來一直推廣英語為第二語言,所以對於英語系的人種,其實人民一直都有一種認為這些人比較有文化知識水平、國際化的感覺。

The causal street chatting video is really interesting~ Many thoughts and ideas from you guys are quite unique and fun.
By the way, about the Taiwanese dressing, I think I can feel a bit what you guys feel although I'm a Taiwanese. I studied and now work in Germany for a while, when I go back to Taiwan I do feel extremely hot and moisture. Even though it's a chilling night (by Taiwanese standard), I can still wear t-short and short pant. However, once I stay in Taiwan for more than a month, my endurance to the cold also reduce and I have to wear jacket at night~ I guess we are just so adapt to the hot temperature and with no endurance to any level of cold weather

  • @bentshuang9062
    @bentshuang9062 3 года назад +9

Because Taiwan is a hot+humid country, we even have 20+ degree days in winter. And consecutive 35+ degree days for months in spring+summer+autumn. So we are used to hot weather but not cold weather. So when temperature drops lower than 25 degree, it is “cold” for a lot of people and that’s when they put on their big thick snowy mountain type of jackets while people who grow up in the countries like USA and Canada where temp can drop below freezing points would find that kinda of Taiwanese winter weather is either still very hot or quite comfortable.

True but also if it's 10 degree with the condition of high humidity, it would be much colder than when it is at the same temperature with dry air. That also should be counted in.

In my experience, many Americans also get excited when they see foreign visitors, but the problem is that in the US, it’s hard to tell who is a foreigner and who is not. Even if they speak English with an accent they’re more likely to be a long-time immigrant rather than a genuine foreigner. Also, it’s considered polite to show interest in people in Taiwan, whereas in the US it’s rude to show too much interest in strangers.

I'm Taiwanese born in Chicago. I live with my boyfriend who's of Scandinavian descent. Here's my opinions on some of your topics and hope it helps! (These are just my experience).
    1. Taiwanese run a bit warmer or are just used to being warmer and perceive it as more comfortable. Since I grew up in Chicago, I can wear t-shirts in Taiwan's winter. I'm just so used to what "cold" is. I'm guessing most foreigners are from generally colder areas and just have a lower threshold for hot temperatures. Compared to my boyfriend, I can tolerate wayyy hotter temperatures though.
    2. Ear picking. Although I've never seen it in public in Taiwan, I personally see it as a nostalgic and comforting act. Most children in Taiwan (and other Asian countries) get their ears cleaned by their parents. I remember falling asleep in my mom's lap and it's just a peaceful and amazing feeling!!!! I still love as a adult! It's a display of love! :)

Something peculiar I've noticed in Taiwan is that the Taiwanese love to boast about being nice people. They love to claim that they have a lot of “人情味” (human warmth/touch or friendliness).
One time, a Taiwanese friend I was chatting with said to me, “台湾人比美国人有人情味,你认同吗?” ("Taiwanese people have more human warmth than Americans, don't you agree?"). I was really upset. It was a somewhat insensitive thing to say, even displaying a low level of 人情味. Obviously, I don't agree. That was only one person; most Taiwanese would not say this. But, I do very frequently hear Taiwanese boasting about having a lot of this quality or using other words to boast about being especially nice people.
My opinion is: it is good to have empathy, to be considerate, to be friendly; but, it's awkward and arrogant to boast about having these qualities, because you sound like you are claiming to be better than other people. Some people who are from a different culture or different country than yourself might appear to you to have less of a human touch, but that's because you really don't understand those people fully. They express empathy and politeness differently from how you do, because they have a different culture.

Not all westerners were born for a lot of the critical elements that go with living in a western society. I don't think of it so much as running away, but rather seeing through the bs, and deciding to take life on by living abroad and having an experience you'll never regret. I was just getting all promotions etc, that I'd been working towards for over 10 years, 'climbing the ladder', and had the best numbers in the country in my field, but it was nothing but stress and monotony. All I could think of all day is going to live on this island that I visited every 6 months for two weeks, and creating a different future for myself. I think there's more bravery in moving from a western society to a place like Taiwan and making something of it that you love doing every day than there is in staying in your box and shutting your face for 40+ years because it's safe and what everyone else expects of each other. Some of us westerners are more woke to everything going on than we get credit for, I think, which is actually why we're here. 🙂

To the Taiwanese people commenting that they're just nice to Westerners because they want 外國人 to feel at home, I can see what you mean... to some extent. I'm a foreigner too, but not a Westerner - I'm Vietnamese, and I've met Taiwanese at both ends of the spectrum - people who are super nice and considerate to me because I'm a foreigner, and people who treat me like s***, also because I'm a foreigner, specifically Vietnamese. It's true that some Taiwanese really look down on us (I hope they're in the minority). And I can confirm the special treatment towards Westerners is not a unique case to Taiwan, as at least it's true where I'm from too. Anyways interesting topic. I love Taiwan too

Ah, so that thing is not just in Germany. "Crazy April weather" is notorious here.
In March we had a couple days of up to 20°C, total lovely spring weather, now it's back to freezing nights and max. 10°C during the day and a couple days ago it snowed here while the sun was shining. A day later there was sleet with strong winds that then transitioned into big-flaky snow with no wind.
(We also have "Eisheilige", the understanding that is important for farmers that freezing nights can still happen even in May.)

Before coming to Taiwan, I had experienced winter in Manchuria, where it typically was -20 degrees. Here in Taiwan, people say it's "cold" if it's less than positive 20 degrees! I just cannot accept the word "cold" being used for any temperature greater than 10 degrees. 8 degrees can be called cold. I'd say 9 to 19 is "cool", 20 to 25 is "warm", and 26 and up is "hot".

#2 - Ear wax... hmm.. interesting topic. My mom used to clean mine when I was little, but now I just use cotton buds to clean it after a shower(so it's wet)
#3- I love getting to know about any foreigner, whether they're white, black, south-east-Asian or whatever. Some people like white guys more, though. Anyway in general, we Taiwanese welcome foreigners😊 And I've never thought about the "You must have problems in your own country" theory. After hearing this I'm confused because... it makes a little sense😅. On the other hand, there are foreigners saying what they like about Taiwan(not gonna give examples for now), and those things don't necessarily suggest we are more developed but are special. We should probably be more confident...
