  • Outrage over police brutality and the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people has generated calls to defund and abolish the police. Longtime organizer Mariame Kaba’s new book, titled “We Do This ’Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice,” brings together collected essays, interviews and other writings that she and numerous collaborators produced between 2014 - the year of the uprisings in Ferguson, Missouri, over the police killing of Michael Brown - and today. Kaba says the book grapples with “the fact that so many people around the country recognize the complete and utter failures and limits of so-called reform” to systems of injustice. “People are impatient with incrementalism and are impatient with solutions that don’t actually address the root causes of violence.”

I heard Mariame Kaba on Ibram X's show. I am a black man but I would love to hear her debate her views with someone astute in these matters from the other side of the spectrum. Maybe victims of crime or people living in crime ridden areas who want to have more criminals arrested. Maybe police who witness the ravages of crime on families and communities. Often social justice people are given a free pass to extol their lofty ideas which oftentimes lead to unintentional, yet deleterious outcomes.

Thank you very much for that interview. These are very important points, but in practice, I still have difficulty with this idea of "abolish." What exactly would you do to the officer who has killed George Floyd if you completely abolished prisons? Presumably, you don't mean to put him back on the street, or do you? The assumption is that the only people in prisons are oppressed people, but is that really true, and in any case, even if it's true, what are you going to do with that officer who killed George Floyd if you don't have some kind of "prison."
And what about Norway?! They are considered to have the most modern and effective prisons in the world. They have done a tremendous amount to improve their prison system and philosophy. It's all centered around rehabilitating prisoners. And yet, their recidivism rate is still around 20%. It's not zero!
By abolish, do you mean rebuilding a completely new system from scratch, or do you really mean that we should get rid of the entire concept of "law enforcement and rehabilitation?"

Excellent point. Her very argument from the beginning is racist, mainly JUST release young black men convicted of violent crimes which their families thought were framed and unfair by "the system" - the same families who often are seen yelling curses at the victim's family in court and telling the news how their son was such a good boy and never would have done those crimes. Meanwhile, Kentucky, Alabama, and West Virginia have the largest populations of incarcerated white offenders, many for meth-related drug crimes and several for hate crime offenses against minorities. She is perfectly find letting them stay exactly where they are.

America's prisons are based in it's Quaker heritage. The Quakers saw them to be institutions of rehabilitation and release. They were not to be institutions of extreme cruel punishment, tough on crime.
All incarceration must include judgement if the laws creating what is criminal. Laws creating and supporting America's second failed Prohibition, the war on drugs must be abolished.

America took all the rights given to Pennsylvanian's by William Penn in tge 1650's who was a "quaker" - a member of The Society of Friends who wrote the first bill of rights in the colonies, and twisted them to fit white supremacist POV with capitalist tendencies to make a fortune off the suffering of the BIPoC n the poor in America

A solution to reform police brutality and overincarceration is to educate people to recognize and dismiss hate rhetoric, provocative deception, destructive labeling (shaming), etc. There is a very interesting World Peace Diet that may help, as it addresses our hidden biases.

As an anarchist, seeing Transformative Justice as a growing movement, is promising and much needed. Anarchists have been attempting non-hierarchical "conflict resolution" practices in our social movements for years. Zines like "the broken teapot" have been circulated, but the problems of "cancel culture" still remained. The recent emphasis of TJ has been a breath of fresh air in anti-authoritarian spaces. Please read Kaba's book "Fumbling Towards Repair", too! Also, can't abolish prisons and keep capitalism

How about equal treatment under the justice system? Cops, rioters, domestic despite people, everybody. Out he more proactive to apply all the laws equally to everybody, then change the system because of something people don't like right NOW; if you the the system for something like this, it's just going to cause problems down the road. Furthermore, less policing is a horrible idea since cities women, and older people are going to be the ones the most affected when criminals start to crim and know there aren't any cops around; reduced cops will lead to more drug crime, arguably assault, physical assault, and robberies.

When my mom received a call to tell me that my Ex had just been shot by the Oakland Police. Someone Else called us for me to bring his only Son to the wait and had a mess down there in front of my Son.. That was the day that I knew Satan was real. I had to laugh at Satan because Satan CANNOT have my Ex, our Children, or my SOUL. Our SOULS belong to a higher power. It took every controlled breath that I have ever taken that day to laugh at Satan. I could not let these pitiful, annoying, and very ignorant People win. They belong in hell. The Government tries to kill one group that proves that they do not mind staying to themselves and bring us around the worse group. The Government time has come to cleanse their demonized hearts!

I'm gonna need to agree with D I on this one, which is saying something because I generally don't agree with anybody in this comment section. If you're going to comment, which helps the channel regarding the algorithm, at least try to make some sort of point. It's pretty safe to say that in the history of written and verbal communication there's never been a single person who's had their opinion swayed by someone repeating "lies lies lies..." while providing no other information at all. I don't like this channel at all, and think it's hyper deceptive pretty much all the time, HOWEVER I still watch it to see what the mindset is to people with completely opposing opinions to mine; occasionally I'll even agree with them, although probably for different reasons.
The takeaway is regardless of what view anyone has, you're not really helpful with a comment like that.
      The End.
