"Dodge City Sheriff Bat Masterson is out to prove that a group of cattlemen have framed Merrick for murder because he negotiated a treaty granting the Kiowas a reserve in the grass country that the cattlemen wanted for their own grazing land. Knowing that the tribes will wage war again if Merrick is executed, Masterson begins a search for Clay Bennett who testified he saw the murder. Joining him in the hunt is Marshal Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, both for different purposes. "Although the friendship of Marshal Wyatt Earp and gunfighter/gambler Doc Holiday is frontier legend and the subject of several movies, Dodge City's other famous lawman Bat Masterson and Holiday did not have the same feelings. That is the premise on which Masterson Of Kansas is built around, although the two are forced into alliance by exigent circumstances.
George Montgomery is in the title role and James Griffith plays Doc Holiday. The exigent circumstances are a threatened Indian war when John Maxwell who has worked for peace is accused of murdering the commanding officer at Fort Dodge on perjured testimony of David Bruce.
It all doesn't smell right to Montgomery who finds proof enough in the Indian village of Jay Silverheels the Comanche chief. At least proof enough for him if not the white man's court. After that he's on a mission to clear Maxwell and maybe win his daughter's hand who is played by Nancy Gates.
And if Montgomery and Griffith don't have enough to fight about the sight of Gates puts them both in heat. Bruce Cowling as Wyatt Earp has enough on his hands to keep these two from killing each other.
Masterson Of Kansas is a nice no frills B western directed by William Castle in a straightforward style that does not portray his penchant for gimmicky horror films. Doc Holiday is always an interesting character and James Griffith joins a respectable pantheon of players who have played Holiday over the years like, Cesar Romero, Victor Mature, Jason Robards, Jr., Kirk Douglas, and Val Kilmer. Griffith yields to none of them.

Bat Masterson was Sheriff of Ford County, not Dodge City. Doc Holliday saved Wyatt Earp's life; no wonder he was grateful.
The actor playing Doc H. stole the show! IMO
George Montgomery was underrated. He was a versatile star, which is shown in his catalog of movies. ❤

He would have been perfect playing Lincoln. He had that deep sullen demeanor.

Thank God movies are a little more realistic today. I've always been a fan of these legends, but this movie, sure is hard to sit through .....66 years later.
This kind of movie isn't realistic in the first place, it's American mythology.

This is a good film with a weak plot setting, but the plot made Masterson acts like a fool, a stupid sheriff.
He left many chances to have the Merrick killed by Fry's boys.
Besides he acted a kind of slow like a turtle and Mr. Merrick almost got hanged by Fry.
The last scene is an old western miracle.
The three heroes exposed themselves in the middle of the main street and finally, they kill all hidden gunmen.
After all, this is a western movie good enough for entertainment.
James Griffith, Doc Holiday is the only supporting actor who attracts attention.

Good acting, fun movie, lousy unrealistic shooting. Always wondered why they never brought people in to at lest try and make actors look like they can shoot.

At times I cannot believe how people all over the world are so interested in American history-via- books and movies! Our Republic developed over a wide span of land and most important was the development of the west, and that is what no other country has. Maybe that's it.
On the way home to California I stopped off in Dodge just so I could ask the clerk in the gas station, "Tell me, how do I get out of Dodge?"

Doc was a dentist not a dr.
They certainty went out of their way to make Doc Holliday a disagreeable person in this movie! I prefer Victor Mature's more believable portrayal in 'My Darling Clementine' (1946) by the famous director John Ford.
