I think language immersion is the best advice: this is how a friend of mine learned Spanish, and on a related subject, have you considered becoming a tutor for I-talki? Your approach to teaching is outstanding.
Congratulations on your sponsor. I've completed the entire Duolingo course But still only catch a word here and there watching Dead Wind. Not much available on US Netflix. Also thank you for legitimizing my talking to myself and talking to my pets in Finnish. My kids just think I'm crazy and talking nonsense. They might be right. Thanks for another great video Kat.
Thank you so much! 😊 And yes, I'm sure from the outside it sounds/looks a little crazy but if it works it works haha! And I can totally understand that. What I've done in the past is when listening to the target language music for example, I'll just repeat all the words I understand out loud. And it's cool to over time notice I can pick up more and more words (even if not full sentences) :p
@@jcpana060959 I've watched both many times. I changed the language and I changed closed caption. And then Netflix starts this "because you watched deadwind" postmortem, Valhalla murders and some others. I found that Icelandic sounded very similar . I hope I'm not confusing myself Even more.
Kiitos for this video! I've been studying Finnish for a little over 6 months now and recently visited Finland for a week - the trip showed me how poor my spoken Finnish is, especially compared with my reading/writing ability 😅 Great tips - I can definitely vouch for talking to yourself, and I've found that watching Deadwind has helped my listening comprehension a lot and given me a better idea of how certain words should sound.
Well the good thing is you now know what areas to work on :D But that's a great tip and I'm happy to hear Deadwind has helped with listening comprehension! Thank you so much for your comment :)
Thank you for the tips! I haven't heard before about child books and shadowing! The problem I faced when I tried to speak (I think it works for any language) I don't understand people quite often. I think the shadowing is a GREAT idea to improve that, but unfortunately some people just don't care that you are foreigner. If you ask them to repeat, they do it by the same way (don't do it slower/clear/etc) and even get angry if you don't understand them. Of course it's better to avoid such people but sometimes you can't avoid them :( and if I am, for example, very shy and nervous, such people makes me much more nervous! also, it's very interesting to know about Finnish shows and series from the comments! Kiitos paljon Katya! Sidney on tosi söpö ja älykäs :)
Yeahh that's so true, I know people who have felt quite discouraged and unmotivated to continue after experiencing situations like the one you described. Which is such a shame. I think it's super courageous when people make the effort to speak a language not native to them. :)
I'm listening every single Ville Valo's Finnish songs on RUclips , find the lyrics , try to translate it by myself and check the translation . I don't know if it's really working, but I enjoy too much to listen the same song over and over again like a brainwashing.
There was a time when you were a rare bird on RUclips because you had your nose buried deep in your books and student related work. Now we're seeing more of you and you've even started cooking dishes online. Are you planning to do this full time?(We're not complaining)
Oh I definitely don't make enough for this to even be my part-time job haha but I plan to do my best to upload consistently and be as active as my schedule allows :)
Three things make it easier for modern people to learn Finnish Yle, Netflix and the Internet where you can find anything if you know where to look. But with everything positive that you report about Finland, there is a big disadvantage: For some inexplicable reason, the Finns hardly ever dub foreign films, I don't want to say more about that, because it is still a trauma for me. Oh yes, there have recently also been good Finnish streamers on Twitch in the chat you can quickly learn the hard core everyday language and the chatting streamers are the best source for spoken Finnish, if you are interested in Kirjakieli, simply read the Yle articles or the Kalevala. And you shouldn't think too much about learning, you don't learn Finnish if if you worry about studying all the time, you just understand it and at some point you just speak it. It's like learning to swim if you just walk around the edge of the pool, it won't work. I woke up a few months ago and the first sentence that formed in my head was a Finnish one, so I got in a good mood. Keep it up Kat you're doing a great job!
Ah yes there is actually a fun story behind that xD Apparently Finland used to be too poor to afford dubbing, so they put subtitles on everything because it was cheaper. Then after some years they realized that literacy rates flew up so decided to keep it that way haha!
I'm a guy from Serbia, living in Germany since 2016.I dont know if you are going to see this comment, but if you do, I'd like you to know that you are unbelivably talented for teaching people, wheather it is finnish or anything else. You have the talent to explan thing really well. In my poing of view you should become a teacher when you grow up (you look like 17 to me). I'm a passive finnish learner, that means I can easily recognize the language and recognize a finnish person speaking english, because of their funny accent :D. My dream is to visit your beautiful country and it's beautiful capital city Helsinki in a few years and I just want to learn the basics (it also is very nice when you are able to say "I speak some finnish") My questions on you: How old are you? Where do you live in Finland and would it be possible to somehow meet you? Kind Regards, Kiitos.
If you are an absolute beginner then children's tv shows are probably the easiest to follow along with. I know a lot of people are really into Moomin (Moomi in Finnish - I'm sure there are clips in Finnish on RUclips). Music probably depends on your genre of interest, anything in Finnish is good for training your ears to listen to the words and pronunciation. For example here is a playlist of new popular Finnish music in 2021: ruclips.net/p/PL7W9LuUf6bFquFZ5Q-AjhyG_CVVaN5s3i
I’m doing all these steps you’ve mentioned but I still lack a solid base. Can you recommend any exercise books with Finnish grammar and sentence forming?
If you said the 'walkies' word to our dog he would have fetched his lead and be scratching at the door before you got the whole word out. :-) The mention of cats would get him growling and barking.
Do you happen to know the root of the word numero? I am just curious because in Spanish it is the same word. For example,Numero uno is numero yksi. I find that interesting.
I googled it just now and what I'm seeing is that people think it originates form latin and maybe via the italian word "numero" (which is also the same) - from this website: fi.wiktionary.org/wiki/numero#Latina
Finnish is a lovely language. I've watched a lot of yr videos and they're pretty interesting and educative. And being a person too you're pretty lively, positive and vibrant which make ur videos even more watch worthy. 🙂👍 Are u on instagram?
Let me know what other tips & tricks you have learned along the way! Let's help each other out 💙📝

I liked the dead wind. Did you watch border town? I liked that one too but when i listen to the Finnish i don't understand much.

I loved dead wind 😍😭 does anyone know when the season 3 will be on Netflix? It’s already on Yle (Finnish national TV)
That's the sweetest doggie omg 🥺

You're the best! I'm honestly so humbled by everyone being so kind. Seriously thank you for being so supportive 🥺
Great vid as always ;)
Thank you 😊
Great advice, thank you for posting
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Been watching border town on Netflix just for this. right now I get 60-70% of it but all the technical terms fly over my head

You are giving good tips, that can be used for any language as well, I think. :)
That's true! :)
I love YLE selkouutiset (text, audio and visual snipets)

And how about you let her leave it to herself where she lives :)
Yes I'm 26 and live in Finland :P
The movie Hevi Reissu (Heavy Trip) is hilarious. I got to meet the two lead actors!
Wow! That's so cool!
Greetings From Finland ☕️🙏🌹
Greetings!😊
Amazing tips!
What do you think about the app Drops to begin the words?
You could definitely give it a try. I've personally not used it so don't have personal experience about how useful it is xD
Kiitos Kat! In retrospect, I should have been a linguist 🙂
Kiitos for watching and for your comment! :D
I watch “pipsa possu” on RUclips 😝

My previous university would use the "Suomen Mestarit" series in their Finnish classes, so maybe that could be something to look into?
