Stick Control (Play-Along): A Real Game Changer

  • Stick Control is arguably the most important academic book in drummers' history. Despite being published almost 100 years ago, it is still a best seller! This book has been highly recommended by some of the most recognized drummers in the past century, and for a good reason!
    Practicing Stick Control offers way more benefits than you would expect from just a bunch of simple patterns. Don't be fooled by its simplicity. If you look under the surface, you will realize the infinite source of knowledge behind each one of these patterns.
    Practicing Stick Control effectively and consistently will immediately upgrade every single major skill required to flow with ease between your ideas:
    Coordination: Memorizing these patterns will improve your reaction time.
    Time: Playing the same figure with different sticking patterns will improve your "Inner Quantizing System", meaning that you will understand the placement of each note on a deeper (way deeper) level.
    Flow: Playing the same figure with different sticking patterns will develop incredible muscle memory to the point where playing drums will become as easy as speaking your native language.
    Speed: You've probably heard something like "If you want to play fast, you need to practice slow." Well, it is true. The good news is that anyone can do this. There are no innate skills required!
    Speed is nothing but the consequence of the consistent and focused practice. Don't even worry about this ;)
    I am not being paid to promote this book. It really changed the way I play, and I hope it does the same for anyone who feels "stuck". I promise this works!
    If you need guidance creating a practice plan, email me at info@drumnationtv.com and ask about the Practice Plan service. I am also currently offering online lessons.

    So glad i have found you your video and website, you have released me from my basic standard beat i was playing, and so true i got stuck with it , have been looking and using this book but never understood it's huge potential, now i have started using it every day and i and feel this is the only drum book you really need, as at first i thought it as a boring repetitive drum practice book but used your way will bring out your inner self playing drums and find your own drumming style and patterns. many thanks for a great video, i have and feel released with endless possibilities.

    Damn, them some big sticks! I can play the riffs. My difficulty is losing concentration while trying to keep track of the number of lines I have completed. Following along with the video is fine because you do the counting for us. Trying to do it alone, not so much, if I try to keep count in my head. One way to get around it is to calculate total time required for 20 repetitions. Example: 100 BPM, 8 beats per line, 20 repetitions is 8 x 20 or a total of 160 beats. So 160 divided by 100 is 1.6 minutes or 1 minute 36 seconds. Set the metronome to 100 BPM and set the timer for 1 minute 36 seconds. When the timer expires, you have completed 20 repetitions.

    Great video, thank you. Worked through it today. Can you speak on why you use large sticks and also about how you return your sticks to a 90 degree resting position after each stroke.
    Also an fyi: the notation for exercise 19 doesn't match what is being played.
    Thanks again!

    • @drumnationtv7066
      @drumnationtv7066  3 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for your comment! I used bigger sticks in this video for no particular reason. I just like them.... The results with smaller sticks would be the same.
      The idea of returning the sticks to the initial position is because I believe that before getting too much into dynamics, we need to master the FULL STROKE. The idea is to develop efficiency, and therefore, speed and articulation. If you time your hands correctly with the rebound, it will almost feel as if the sticks are floating.
      This video might help you out if you want to get a bit more into this very important subject: ruclips.net/video/JMKwzuII7eo/видео.html
      Also, thanks for getting that far through my video. I did make an editing mistake and didn't notice on time, so unfortunately I had to leave it there. I am glad you noticed and I hope you corrected your practice :).

  • @ronsissons8994
    @ronsissons8994 6 месяцев назад +1

    HI,
    Thank you for this.
    So, is the concept, after learning the patterns, to run through them 20 times sequentially all the way through at a low tempo(say 60bpm) and then after a set time(few days/week) of that, bump the tempo up say 5-10 bpm and repeat the process?

    • @drumnationtv7066
      @drumnationtv7066  6 месяцев назад

      I don't consider myself as an expert, but something that has worked for me really well is not only focusing on increasing he tempo, but also play the patterns slowly while playing simple patterns with the feet. It also helps combining them. I think what matters most is to spend as many hours as you can, and just let your creativity take over once you feel like it. You can also move on to the next page. I have a PART 2 video with exercises 25-48. Think of these exercises as words: Once you know them well, then they become part of your speech.
