Ferrari’s F1 headache its new star has created

- It wasn’t absurd to think Ollie Bearman would race for Ferrari in F1 one day. But now he’s done so several years ahead of schedule, and exceeded all expectations, which gives Ferrari an interesting headache.
Ferrari was going to keep Carlos Sainz alongside Charles Leclerc for the next couple of seasons, then pulled off the blockbuster signing of Lewis Hamilton for 2025 instead.
Whichever path Ferrari had taken, Bearman wasn’t in the short-term picture. What Ferrari wanted was for Bearman to win Formula 2 this year, be placed in another F1 team to serve his apprenticeship for at least a couple of seasons, then get a call-up to partner Leclerc once he had proven himself.
But after Bearman performed damn close to an acceptable level for an established Ferrari driver in a superb debut in Jeddah, maybe that original plan’s no longer appropriate.

1:20 How he really did vs Leclerc

This isn't Ferrari's headache, this is F1's headache, this is a prime example of why we need more teams on the grid which generate more opportunities for young talents
Which is fine apart from one issue
Teams generally don't want to send their academy drivers to teams that they don't supply engines to and on the rare occasions they do (Albon) the engine maker doesn't want them there because of industrial espionage (again, Albon and Toto trying to stop him)
Having Andretti, for example, on the grid would not help Bearman in the slightest
F1 doesn't have an obligation to "create more opportunities" for young drivers. They're a business.
@@reecerox2I think it’s a pretty popular opinion that F1 should be a sport first and a business second. Unfortunately the reality is that its the other way around.
@@reecerox2 Their business relies on keeping f1 entertaining. More teams and more drivers will make more opportunities for more entertaining racing.
There's no real reason why there can't be an "F1 League 2", similar to football and most other sports. That's where new teams could enter, where rookie drivers prove their stuff, two teams get relegated a year, two teams go up a year, and so on and so forth. People want more races, people want more teams etc, it can happen.
And no, F2 is not a "F1 League 2", the League 2 would have the same regs, the same cars. F2 champions cannot race there again so it's F1 or bust....usually bust.
I can't see any headache. Ollie could sign a two year contract with Haas from 2025 and in 2027 he will go to Ferrari
What if both Leclerc and Hamilton both want to continue with Ferrari in 2027?
@@kishanjethwa1817 Too bad you dump Hamilton
What if Bearman wants to be on a good F1 team?
If Hamilton does retire by 2027, a certain Max Verstappen might be available by then and he's hinted that he'd like to drive for Ferrari.
Would Leclerc tolerate Verstappen in the same team? If he does, there won't be any space for Bearman.
Another problem is that I really think Bearman is being massively hyped right now.
It's only one race and it's not like he blew the competition away in F2 last year.
I dont think any young driver should go to haas.
People do need to chill a bit when a rookie comes in and performs will as a stand in debut. Remember all of the hype after Nick DeVries scored a point in the Williams in Monza 2022? The standard plan is fine, Bearman came in and performed better than could possibly be expected but it's not like he was outperforming the car
Exactly. It's the 2nd best and fastest single lap car, and he finished 7th. Sounds as expected to me, even for a debut.
Yes, I find it quite amusing the hype and enthusiasm any rookie that doesn't put the car on the wall or comes last generates. It was the same with Lawson last year. They look promising but atm it's just that, they still have quite a lot to prove. Once upon a time young Perez, young Danny Ric and young Bottas were touted as future world champions too.
Bearman did what was expected of him having a Ferrari... would've been P10 if not for Lewis and Lando's bad strategy and Lance doing Lance things.
Whos that ?
You have to remember the kid is still only 18, third youngest driver in history to start an F1 race. His performance signalled everything right for someone down the grid to give him a shot. Now he needs to be within winning margins for the F2 title given he's lost out on points two weekends in a row.
People overreacting because its ferrari and there's not much else to f1 cause everyone knows max is going to win again 😂
Lando jumping the start at 5:31 is brilliant
No advantage was gained
I was just laughing as the F1TV announcers wouldn't shut up about it for like the first 30 minutes of the race.
Yes, Croft is almost as bad as Leigh Liffey!!! OMG the constant SHOOOOOOOUTING and mistakes he makes while ATTEMPTING to invoke excitement and astonishment is quite annoying! If Buxton hadn't become such a Verstappen groupie I would have wanted him to be the lead announcer because he was the best I've ever seen when he was calling GP2 races a decade ago. Sadly now he just cheers blindly for Verstappen as it seems he's enamored by with him.@@red5standingby419

They did not wait a couple of years with Verstappen. Not everyone is a Verstappen, but a long timeline just does not provide the driver the proper learning experience.
Kid did well, but nowhere near causing anyone who has Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc under contract any headaches.
It definitely makes someone like Lance look significantly more worthless though, considering how that man crashed out in the same race while having 7 years more experience.
@@Justeeeevy piastri and bearman deffo show that some drivers do not deserve the seat. stroll is lucky his dad owns the team and zho that sauber needed money so they signed him.

Right. Saw the race, the fella did alright, good even.
Everyone seems to be creaming their pants over him as though as if he pulled off some wild overtakes or great moves or had a spectacular qualy lap or some such.
He did an alright race with no major mistakes. More than can be said for some of the drivers at this particular race, but nowhere enough for everyone to be loosing their minds like they seem to be at the moment.
@@vandelay_industries I dont think they are OTT ,they are just achknowledging that it was a very mature and professional performance from a young kid in his first F1 drive with a few hours notice..in fact youngest ever? Let Ollie develop at his own and be formidable eventually. No need to overhype after just one outing and put pressure on him the next time when he drives.
What’s the headache? He’s 18! He should drive 2-3 years for Ferrari junior teams and then give him a Ferrari seat if he’s good.
Hell give em a seat now
Some people just have it, max was in the red bull at 18, red bull should get ollie and put him along side max to build him up, even if he doesn't do well it won't matter because max can still win both championships on his own

Bearman has more points after one F1 race and Nyck ever had in twelve.
And it’s still being said about Norris. Over 100 starts and no victory at all while Oscar has already won a sprint and beat Norris again at this race.
Great comparison between a 29 and 18 year old . You are so smart sir . Even Max wasn't good when he joined F1 . He used to crash a lot . He had the speed but lacked patience . Year by year he improved and is now the most dominant driver the sport has ever seen . Driving around Jeddah in an F1 car without crashing is very impressive .

I think this is the first time I disagree The Race's analysis.. the dude did Bare-minimum expected. In the 2nd fastest car and he finished behind everyone except those on alt strategy and F1.5 cars
Maybe we should slow down with expectations and "headaches" around Bearman. Agreed, he did a wonderful job on short notice, but so did de Vries on his debut. And we all know how his career went. Worst thing for him would be to rush him in, especially when grid is this tight and every little counts for few extra millions for the team at the end of the season
I agree.
becauts AT was even bigger shitbox than williams
I think y’all are blowing his debut out of proportion. I remember De Vries also got everyone excited for scoring a point on debut in a Williams and look how that turned out. Wait it out and see how he does in F2 is the correct plan
It's like everyone forgot Lawson coming in and smoking yuki like a ham. Also he came in at Zandvoort, which was a way crazier and tougher race.
Yuki beat Lawson on track in Zandvoort. Lawson only beat him in that race because Yuki had a 5 sec penalty. Lawson survived that race because he was a solid 5 seconds behind everyone until the last 5-10 laps. Yuki also out qualified Lawson by 2 seconds in q1 and 3 seconds in q2. In the other races Yuki out qualified Lawson 4-1(only loss was because he was blocked by Max in singapore so he didn't finish the lap.) Yuki DNS one and was crashed into by Perez in another. Lawson was really only 2-1 over yuki if you don't count the sprint in qatar. So it really was 2-2 with Yuki dominating in Qualifying. "Smoking Yuki like a Ham" I don't think so mate. Take your hand out your pants and watch a race please.
Uhhh…that did not happen only person smoking was you, some strong stuff to remember things that did not happen.
It’s not a Ferrari headache it’s a F1 headache. Bearman is 18 and was in a Ferrari. I would’ve been surprised if he didn’t score at least 1 point so chill on the hype. He wasn’t in a Haas/Williams/VCARB like most rookies would be. He got talent but relax and we need a bigger sample size.
Exactly my thought. The hype is like he was winning the race or podium. Idk maybe it's related with his nationality i guess
Just like all the other rookies, he should be given some more practice sessions, then a seat at a bottom half team if he further proves himself. Wouldn't be surprised if KMags seat is up for grabs next season if he continues to get dominated as hard by Hulkenburg as last year, so maybe that's an option. He would easily be Ferraris choice for it atm that's for certain.
@@muhammadshofwan5309yes, totally related to being british, disgusting.

It's no that hard bro, Ham goes until 26 or 27 and then Ollie steps in after getting experience with Haas. Ferrari literally did the same with Lecrerc and worked wonders.

@@haydenw8691 Because if another team is added (and it performs well), one of the current ones could fall into bankruptcy and leave F1, leaving us with 10 teams once again.
That's what happened in 2016 when Haas joined. That was the same year in which Manor "died" after finishing the last. None of the lower teams would want to risk that fate again.
If Andretti really wants to get into F1, he should just buy or partner with an existing team, as his current attitude is not helping him.

This comparison is always so dogshit. Nyck was 28 fresh out of fe and ollie is 18 and one of the fastest if not the fastest in f2. Devries was in a less competitive field when he won and was not obviously the best driver either. F2 is however so absurdly competitive right now that its hard to tell who best. I think from last year it was obvious he was the most promising person there.
You remember how Vettel got his drive in 2007? They chose him because of his debut performance replacing Kubica.

For real. He's clearly shown talent in F3 and F2 but he's still only 18. Maybe he can get a seat with Haas next year to get some experience and replace Hamilton at Ferrari when he retires.
I had a stroke reading the title
The mental gymnastics I just did to read this title is on another level
He was trying moves that you don’t see from experienced drivers because they’re high-risk in high downforce cars. It was exciting to watch!
The future looks bright, with piastri, bearman, etc, from 2026 on F1 will be amazing
Personally I am more impressed by Nick de Vries in the williams at Monza and Rene Rast's DTM debut at Zandvoort, both have not been driven high downforce cars for a while and both raced in very different type of cars, yet they ended up with points in their first competitive outing. And remember Rast is a guy came from Polo Cup..

5:30 That little jink from Norris visualised🤣🤣
It’s always great to see how accepting, welcoming and encouraging the grid is of these stand in rookies
Just remember what Haas done to Mick Schumacher...
Mick was always going to disappoint in F1
Guy was trash in F1, when will you people accept that fact? He had only one race that was worth talking about and that was it.
Steiner was the issue at Haas then, not Mick.
Mick S was useless
I hope he will not finished as Nyck de Vries
De Vries is a different case. He is an F2 and FE veteran, has a couple of free practice sessions and he has YEARS more experience than Bearman when they made their F1 debuts. He also did his F1 debut on William's best track, Monza.~~~~ All of those factors inflated his value. Bearman is impressive because he is literally a newbie, 18years old, only a few years into his single seaters career, he performed well with only a few hours of practice in the SF-24 and did so in one of the most mistake-prone tracks. He is a different breed to De Vries
Loved the animation at 5:32 picturing Norris "false start"
The major plus for him is "managing those tyres in the last laps" and not bucking or panicing under pressure
Reserve driver does reasonable job, everyone loses mind. Calm down guys, blowing everything out of proportion. Again.
Butyou dint understand... he is brit in the second fastest car on the grid acoring points (to be expected of him in such a car). Ofc media will ride it as long as they car
He was as quick as the leaders at the end when he was used to the car more
We have seen this before. One good race shows nothing. Look at De Vries, who is now out of F1.
So its worth noting that Oliver Bearman is listed not only as a test driver for Ferrari but for Haas. I could easily see Ferrari pulling some strings in order to get Bearman one of the two Haas seats for next year considering the 'close relations' the two teams have.
You know it is cool that rookies are coming in and doing amazing debuts but I am curious what established drivers from other rival teams would do given the same equipment.
Well Lance Stroll would probably crash it or still be 8 tenths off his teammate after 8 seasons.
he did good but people acting like hes guaranteed a ferrari seat now is absurd. we all remember nyck de vries?
De Vries was always overrated for F1. His F2 championship took him way too long and happened in a very weak field, and his FE championship was lots of luck in arguably the best package. His debut also come in Monza where Williams had such a slippery package he was nearly impossible to overtake. So all in all, good driver but not fast enough for F1. Bearman already has already made a much better impression.
Vettel did similarly to Bearman when he replaced Kubica and scored points in his debut.
Nyck isn’t the only example.

One thing you did not mention - fitness. There’s videos of his head wobbling like crazy. A fulll length GP- especially Jeddah is demanding like no Formula series can replicate. That affects lap time significantly
The Ferrari is built around Leclec, Bearman was a rookie driving someone else's car, man thats impressive.

wow just after one race and we have people hyping him up like he’s so good, its just one race. calm down
Considering all the pressure of driving for Ferrari and only having fp3 to prepare for the key sessions. At the age of 18 Showed how talented he is. Give him some years in f2 to mature his talents and he will be ready for f1.
Many melt under the pressure of f1. He clearly didn’t show that. Especially with his race pace throughout.
Vesti, while having a year experience over him in F2, beat him by +60pts or +48%. Hoping all the best for him but let’s see how he does against Antonelli who skipped F3 entirely and is, IMO, a genuine bonafide threat once he gets to F1. Absolutely rapid. And maybe we’re saying everyone in F2 is a star if so that’s my bad but he has his hands full this season. Though I still could see Antonelli finally getting his flowers and it accepted he’s not a realistic benchmark.
This could be less of an issue if we had more teams involved.
Too bad F1 teams are not interested in the health of the sport, just their own self interests.
I find it fascinating how people from different areas of the world talk about things. What is emphasized and what isn't
heavily hyped up after 1 race, let's see how it goes after a few
Those race car graphs are great ... I wonder if those could be used to illustrate how Magnussen imitated a moat and a defensive wall while helping Hulkenberg built up a lead good enough for a pitstop.
I think Ollie is great, but the hype over his drive is nothing less than ridiculous. 7th is what I’d expected any talented prospect to do w/easily the 2nd best car on the grid on short notice.
Its deffo gonna be a Bearman vs. Antonelli Championship fight in the future!!
Do people ever learn their lesson 😂 Nyck De Vries was hyped like this for scoring points in a Williams on his debut. It was one race. And he was in the second fastest car, that being said P7 is a great result, but realistically without a bit of luck he’d have finished probably 10th maybe behind Hulk, and definitely behind Norris and Lewis without their teams messing up the strategy and keeping them out during the safety car.
I rate lawsons drive slightly higher basically same standards that got him into that seat but that race in the Netherlands was more difficult from how it looked
And he was in Alpha Tauri which was one of the slowest car.
His teammate was Tsunoda which doesn’t make it as impressive as it was.
Absolutely agree with your analysis. He is genuinely up there with the best on a track that many more experienced drives have failed at. What he has is a great combination of talent and composure. Bring on the new gen of F1 racers!
HAHAHAHAHHAHA RICCIARDO SPINNING ACTUALLY GOT ME
Two key differences from Piastri--waiting for a drive at Ferrari is much more worthwhile than waiting for a drive at Alpine, and Alpine couldn't even guarantee Piastri a back-marker seat (given no back-markers want their engines). For that reason I think it could be more like Russell.
If he had a hass would not hear the same hype on him
Quick question. If Bearman had sub in the alpine car, would we be talking about him the same way? Or what we saw was actually a fast car under delivering? I feel like we r pumping up something that shows Ferrari is a fast car and nothing else.
5:30 Is that a jump start from norris? XD
It's impressive how The Race pinpoints only the info that suits the video and excludes everything else. Olie himself admitted to having trouble with his physical conditioning and I'm not even sure, how could he have enough superlicence points.
I like how the infographic showed Norris's jump start 🤣
The Piastri situation has just made the teams more aware to lock down their young drivers into proper contracts that they control. Notice how Red Bull never had that issue because unlike Alpine, they aren't idiots.
And this is the exact reason why there needs to be more teams in F1. There’s a literal “dead end” for drivers in F2 at the moment.
British media hype is absolutely amazing. Give this kid 10 WDC's already!
Ollie's a year at least of physical training away from being able to handle F1 week after week - he said his body was wrecked after the race and his neck gave out so badly that he dented the brace around his seat. Two consecutive race weeks would prove very taxing until he gets stronger.
Did Yoda write the title?
The race is right here. With the Charles & Lewis pairing, Ollie will be sent to Haas, but for how long?
If he's that good and outgrows Haas with no shot at a Ferrari seat, then is it fair to retain him?
I get that it was an impressive showing, but we just saw this with nyck de vries. He had one race where he performed very well in one of the top cars. Then less than a year later in the AT he struggled to get above P18, and got sacked half way through the season. Maybe Ollie is the next great thing, but its seems rash to throw out any future plans because of one race.
That little spin from Ricciardo in the race graphic 🤣
Curious to see other top current F2 drivers have their chance in a top tier F1 car.....
Frustrating just how significant each F1 team's car makes
Top 2*. The Ferrari is clearly the 2nd best car on the grid ATM...
It seems like each new generation is better than all but the stars of the previous
Seems like we all forgot De Vries. 🤷♂️
Wow. GREAT analysis.
The fact that Kimi beat Ollie in Bearman who has done this in a Ferrari makes me excited for him even more.
Unlike Ollie bearman Kimi has only had 1 race while Ollie's in his second season and also raced in F3
1:04 can you explain how he was close to an acceptable level for a full time driver? He was half a second off of lecerc
That’s very impressive to only have 1 FP session in a car that’s not fitted for you and almost immediately get on the pace at a track like Jeddah
Always love it when a new name gets a chance and makes the most of it
With the huge race schedule, teams should have to use the reserve driver for 6 random races and have the main drivers sit out for a few events. The 3rd driver should have limited experience.
That demonstrates that F2 drivers deserve more opportunities in a grid full of drivers that already shown their not so impressive limits like Stroll, Magnussen and Bottas, and some decadent ones like Ricciardo and Perez
Remember Nick De Vries. Everyone said (especially The Race) he was amazing after 1 race. Then, half season later he was gone. This feels similar.
What would liam lawson have achieved in simlar machinery?? A super star on the side line two
i think they should make one rookie per team do a race as part of the young driver program. So one rookie per team at a time selected at random. This selection would be done on a thursday.
Remember those stand in performances by future F1 greats Vandoorne and De Vries? This proves he’s a star already!
Love Ricardos spin in the race graphic
These stat graphics y’all have are sick
The only thing that has changed is that they are a little more confident about Bearman, but whatever they were planning for him isn't going to change at all
I mean.... Even LeClaire started in Sauber for a few years before moving up. In fact I can't think of when Ferrari put a fresh driver in their car. They always pull drivers from other teams.
