- Disney's movie business is surprisingly not its most profitable division. Many people think Disney toys, action figures and merchandise may be most profitable, but this is not the case. Bob Iger is Disney's transformative CEO who has turned the company into a money machine with acquisitions including Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars (Lucasfilm), and now 21st Century Fox.
With new assets under the Disney umbrella, Disney is looking at the world through a digital lens. With products such as Hulu, Disney Plus, and ESPN+ hitting the market, Disney will be a force to be reckoned with against competitors in the media streaming space.

Netflix is gonna face super strong ass competition.
Netflix will be king of streaming for a long time. All the billions Disney is making are just going to be spent making shows for the service. It will take time for Disney to catch up but not long. When it comes down to the last two remaining streaming media, it will be Disney vs Netflix till the end
Thanos listen I have already left Netflix and now have a Hulu account. It’s so much better. You have Handmaid’s tale, tons of anime not on Crunchyroll, Black-ish, Grown-ish and a lot more quality TV shows. Now Disney’s talking about consolidating Disney+ with it, I won’t mind paying the extra 6 if I can get Marvel spinoffs. There will be many more like me who’d rather get quality TV shows rather than the crap on Netflix.

I wish they experiment with new I.P. rather just keep making remake. More experiment side so that way the consumer won't get bored from the same story.
Yes, I believe this is a major concern. Also the whole short/long run. In the short-run making the Lion King 50 times may make a lot of money but in the long run that can tarnish a brand.

Purchase Cedar Fair Platinum Pass for $202 to go to Winterfest, monthly payments. Perks at more than 1 park that way and cleaning their parks up, hiring more acts, more events. Cedar Point put out some great stuff this past year. WDW AP just renewed with discount @$1012, no monthly payments last month. I found a mess with reduced staff and live performers, reduced hours, construction walls everywhere. Unmaintained beat up areas(due to ramming by strollers, scooters, picking)outright rudeness from castmembers, guests. Trashcans overflowing(other trash randomly left everywhere)rides and transportation down. And this was on a low crowd week, place will be hell on earth with Holiday crowds. The food and merchandise goes higher but not in quality.
I am going to say it. My grandparents, parents would never have screamed nor cursed at me because I was hot, bored or tired like what I witnessed @WDW the past few years. We would just have left, WDW will let you come back. We also had to walk and talk, no device to play with. I had a panic attack once over the way parents were treating their children. I cried many times for so many children, these parents were not quiet nor discrete in any way at all. To be honest, they were not healthy family interactions going on at all. My own children are too sensitive to be yelled, dragged like that. I don't know, maybe we're the weirdos in Murica. US families must be expected to not engage in any meaningful interaction anymore, so much rage. At the most Magical Pace on Earth😂

The massive asset buying spending spree happening under Iger was basically to recession proof Disney as much as possible as well as to grow the company to never before seen horizons, the problem is a lot of the creative spark that gave the little animation company it's initial flair has all but gone, tacky easy to produce live action cgi remakes are cannibalizing the hand drawn animated classics, many of which were made while Eisner was in charge 🤔
I don’t know how people afford to go to the parks anymore. They are nice but pricing themselves out at least for me.

For the 2300 it would cost my son and I to go for a week we could go for 3 weeks traveling Europe and North Africa.
I had chance to go before it got to point u need a pass to go certain days lol. so last i went was back 93 or close lol. but now u gotta be rich to go for even a day it seem lol.

the Patriot you very easily could’ve just googled “wall-e”, instead of asking in a RUclips comments section and waiting for a reply... anyway it’s a movie about an intelligent robot who is programmed to clean up the earth and embarks on his own adventure in doing so.
They are beginning to take on too many liabilities. The new Star Wars parks aren’t printing money. If the news of inflating the parks revenue books is true, then it goes to show how the foundation might not be solid. And then if true it could easily flow into inflating the film and tv revenue.
I mean they say Captain Marvel is one of the most popular marvel comics characters... (she’s been rebooted so many times it’s not even funny anymore). So that shows they’ll do everything they can to inflate the numbers (ex buying 25 tickets to Captain Marvel showings and no one shows up in those seats nor do they request refunds).
At this point Disney isn’t a true large company because it brings in a ton of revenue, it’s a large company that owns so many other companies the range of intellectual properties is extensive. They’re just lucky that some of those IP’s will print money for now.
They like Hollywood are also out of ideas. They are the face of out of ideas recycled garbage. How these remakes keep making money is complete lack of education on the consumer’s part for critical thinking in film theory.
Disney, is their own worst enemy. In some ways they’ll profit off of that. Like more people will buy the originals over the remakes. In other ways they will kill the hype themselves. SW has seen that. Overhyped TLJ which tanked critically and then Solo tanked critically and box office cash wise, hype for TRoS is literally half of what the hype for TFA was with merchandise sales the lowest it has been in the past decade and faith in the brand has wavered. In other ways they made such a satisfying ending to the first three phases of the MCU that fans have no interest in being as dedicated as they once were with the MCU just off of that. Not to mention they have already begun to cater to an audience that won’t show up. One that will turn on them quicker than most Star Wars fans would if they take the wrong step. An audience that will eat them alive now that they’ve acknowledged them and given them priority.
Will all of this (and more) kill Disney? No. But it will rattle shareholders once those short term gains cease and turn into losses.
In the long term, I believe Disney is in a bubble that’s created by lack of respect for the consumer and believing the consumer to be blindly following the church of Disney and that they have too many IPs and not a clue on how on how to properly manage those IPs. A Jack of all trades is a master of none. I believe in the next 10 years we could see them start divesting the lower performing properties off just to keep the stock trading above $115. They’ll probably also have to deal with an investigation or two into anti-competition and monopoly law violations with as big as they are. I wouldn’t doubt that there’s some embezzlement and insider trading going on as well with as big as they are, it’s harder to manage now too.
If you’ve made it this far into my comment you’re probably wondering why I’m so critical of them. Well I base most of my gut feeling and observations on the Folley of Icarus. It’s simple enough that if one is ignorant of shortfalls and does not learn from them, each of those shortfalls when repeated add up to one great big fall. The folley of Icarus was that he flew too high, too close to the sun. Thusly is wings were burnt to ash.
So with many of their revenue streams being of low margin (or possibly inflated to hide losses), it would be death (or fall from the top I guess) by a thousand cuts.
Disney’s only saving grace of a revenue stream will be Disney+. The subscription service is at a really good price and includes Hulu and ESPN+. And the technology infrastructure supporting that service seems to be able to withstand ~99% utilization.
Just be wary of what Disney looks like in 10 years. Just because a service is successful doesn’t mean it’s profitable either. Granted they won’t have too many royalties to pay for content but As A Service shows to be an efficient, yet costly model and profits have to be made fast to break even. Any reliability issues and subscriptions will drop like flies. They way they’re baiting consumers on this is by having them purchase a year membership at a discount.
A good example of how this model make not work out in the long run is Netflix. They are bleeding cash. They have had so much debt that they would be a huge liability if any company was looking to buy them. So with Disney+, again Disney could probably handle the losses but not if everything else is performing financially poorly as well.
If anything, I think we’ll see Bob Iger “retire” in the next 5 years. Shareholders will get cold feet based on wavering brand confidence for the majority of brands under Disney. With a new CEO they’ll bring in an activist hedge fund and go through and cut the fat. Marvel Comics will close or go digital only. Disney channels will consolidate to one single channel or cease to air completely. Radio Disney will be gone. They won’t publish or distribute physical media anymore (and that hurts as a Blu-ray collector and a believer in the superiority of physical media). They close at least one of the international parks. Those are the only efficiencies I can think of, for now at 4 am lol.
That's alot of typing but worth it if everyone will read it. And honestly absorb that message.
It has had me worried with the buy of Fox(someone was going to). Small one screen theater owners have been pressured by DIS terms on length of time shown, how many screens and up to 80% of ticket sales. It is so hard to find a theater showing indies or small studio productions the past fee years. Now talk of putting so many great films in their "Vault" that Esquire, Drexel, Neon, Little Art screen to survive(some small theaters in Ohio)drawing young people into see a movie made before they were born. Alien just had 40th Anniversary and DIS owns Rocky Horror Picture Show!
I too enjoy having my blurays of movies I know that I will watch and love over and over. Disney+ launched and has been a disaster for many of us, I am having buyers remorse after prepaying for 3 years to lock in @$4.99/month. I have yet to attempt loading after reading the horror stories online, waiting for the hype to die down. And it was hacked, some have reported all their streaming services were affected(poor passwords). Others like myself who interact with DIS with AP, MDE have had their accounts merged with Disney+, don't like that at all.
But I use different passwords for everything so I may be spared.

Excellent video! Disney is definitely becoming a bit of a leviathan. I struggle with my concern over the fact that they are taking over EVERYTHING vs. my childhood connection and what disney always represented to me. It’s becoming increasingly expensive to visit the parks. Annual passes are outrageously expensive. The company has said they are raising prices as a means of crowd control. Which feels mean spirited and not at all what Walt Disney himself had ever intended. Of course that is my nostalgic longing for a company that was from another time. Money printing machine indeed. And I will keep handing my money to Mickey as often as I can. Especially since he pretty much owns everything anyway. 🤷🏻♀️

The Skyliner costs had to be high(disrupt the quiet pool @Jamaica)while the monorail trains breakdown. Both went down on a thunderstorm the 1st week of November, what a nightmare of chaos since no one knew what to tell people to do at park closing. So out came the buses at weird pickup spots.
The upcharge events for a partial park experience and ever increasing crowds at the holiday parties(more dates) cutting staff, hours of operation. His overpriced crappy bland merchandise and food. I miss Artist Point and soon The Wave. Ghirardelli chocolate may not get contract renewal and I could see him booting out Joffrey's coffee too. Most of all I hate him for that stupid and unnecessary "Vault". That's where great movies that DIS bought from 21st Century Fox will end up. Unseen and unavailable like Song of the South.

There’s just a couple visual details that really bother me and I was wondering if you maybe could fix them to please my OCD.
1) Your subscribe CTA at the start of your videos is not cleanly cut. Around the red button you can clearly see white pixels on whatever background you’re using. Those pixels hurt my eyes.
2) Your Patreon CTA has the Patreon logo on the left and your logo on the right. There’s a very clear difference in the resolution of the images used. The Patreon logo looks washed out compared to yours. Please use a vector version of the Patreon logo or otherwise try to match the resolution of the logos so my eyes don’t have to bleed.

Funny, every quarter Bob Oger with Christine usually with has been saying ESPN had been bleeding subscribers with cordcutters plus contracts. Even in earnings call in September. ESPN+is getting customers back though.

Disneys blockbuster movies comes from characters that were mostly created in the past (except pixar), they may find success in generating revenue from the streaming service with all their content and may enjoy it for quite some time but they should never be complacent. Netflix is forced to do its originals because the content it licenses is being thretened by these cable companies who wanted to launch their own streaming services. Thus disney should create a new division focused on originals and have another division focused on how to reap the max benefits from the content they already have.
Let me stop you right there..... First "fact" is WRONG. In 1996 the CEO of Disney wasn't boh iger it was MICHAEL EISNER. Also einser had worked for ABC previously and due to that professional relationship he was able to make a acquisition of the tv network. NOT BOB IGER. @themarketisopen you forgot to mention how ESPN has been losing money for years. Also that they have 59 billion in debt. 44 billion of that is due this year. If the Rise of Skywalker doesn’t do well Disney will be in big trouble. They spent way to much way to fast.

Movies that didn't make the money they should have, attendance at Disney actually down when they opened new land and toy sales that are no where near what they should have been. Many toys have already been pulled from Disney's shelves. Iger has has been giving excuses to the board for its poor performance. George Lucas is upset they didn't use his script. Even Mark Hamill briefly mentioned his disappointment in an interview.

I will never forget in 1977 there was a real mania for the movies with an emotional investment. The last movies not so much. The exception to that is the Mandelorian which is pretty awesome due to the fact that they went back to Lucas to write the script.
I wish they made 2D animated movies like they did before Toy Story came out. The new stuff is just them being lazy! It’s sad to think we will never have a new Disney classic like Aladdin or Little Mermaid.
PS. Thanks a lot for making me want to go back to Disneyland...those parks are amazing.
Why do you assume we wont get more? To be logical, with them spending all that money to aquire Fox, they are doing these live action films to recoup money which look at the revenue they generated. So now they will simply settle into these new ventures over the next few years then go back to putting out what they always have.
What people need to be more concerned about is their controlling market share, that's going to hurt the consumers
They won’t be considered classics to you because you’re no longer a kid. These new movies will classics to kids 15 years from now.
Sadly those 2D movies (such as the Princess and the Frog in 2009) haven’t performed anywhere near as well at the box office. Money runs everything. If anything good though we have the old classics to keep and you never know, someday 2D animation may come back into style at the box office. Today it isn’t though.

Frozen story was disjointed but came out when everyone wanted something anything to feel good. Idina's song allowed us to Let it Go.

Audio started great compared to the previous vid, but the more you get in the video the more it starts sounding like you are editing your sentences together like in the previous video. Content is great tho, but the audio is annoying and makes you sound like one of those robocalls.

I am sorry to have to notice, but anything Disney has purchased has since been degraded, starting with the Star Wars universe which is now something I even would not want to show to my children. In fact, it is so bad, I'd be inclined not to show them even the old films in the fear that'd lead them to seeing what Disney has recently produced. It is with much sadness I see that they are about to acquire and ruin Bluey and I dread the possibility of Start Track becoming owned by them.
Yeah I did not grow up with Disney movies even as a child. I watched Gone with the Wind none of their princesses were as pretty as Vivian Leigh imo.

Please do more research. Most of the revenue is actually from ESPN within media (by FAR). Movie from live sports should be a big part of the discussion.

All of this is interesting and like most people I am considering getting Disney plots, but I still can't find any information as to whether Disney plus will be compatible with my TV which is a smart TV made by Sharp .
Jason, I would recommend looking into getting something like a FireTV, Roku, etc. We have an old Sharp tv, and the Hulu app never worked right. It was never updated to be fixed either. I got a FireTV on Prime day, and it works SO much better. Also, they’ve been really good about updating it, so we don’t have issues. And pretty much every popular app is available on there.

Why are they essentially making it harder for those networks to make money by making their new shows exclusive to Disney plus?
