      Hedne describes himself as a "mentalist". This is a very specific title. Penn's entire speech is about how "Everyone thinks you did trick X but you actually did trick Y". Actually, a better way to put that would be "Everyone thinks you did trick X but you actually did trick 3". There is no traditional magic trick going on. Hedne keeps saying he did not influence them, but he did. A mentalist is basically a Jedi skilled with using Jedi mind tricks.
      Hedne did not actually perform a prediction, sleight of hand, or any "traditional" magic trick. He influenced Alison and the guest to say the things he wanted. Penn and Teller know he did this, but his usage of props, speech, and body language were so skilled and discrete, that they could not figure out what he did. This is why he said "We figured out one thing you did, but we couldn't figure out the other".

      @@MrNarratore Look up "Mentalism" on wikipedia. Don't look up "Mentalist" because you'll get the TV show. Also, look up Derren Brown and his show if you want to see a pretty entertaining mentalist. He had an episode where he demonstrated one principle of mentalism that might be at play here in this clip. There's a segment on one episode of his show where he's standing on a street corner and talking to the camera. He shows us 8 portraits of people one by one. Then he says "Choose the one that you remember most from the line up" and he places them all on screen at once. He then points to one and says that you chose this one, and I mean I personally did. He then explained that, the reason why he was the one we chose, was because the dude walks by in the background of the shot during the first time we're shown the portraits, so his face is the only one we've seen twice. Anyways, I'm not saying this is what was done, but it demonstrates both the principles and the power of mentalism. I'm positive that's what happened here in some way, from the way Hedne calls himself a mentalist to the way Penn describes the trick in code.

      @@NXHLVS Wrong! Mentalist is not someone who influences other people's thoughts. They are those who make the trick seem like they influenced their thoughts. BIG difference. You can't predictably influence other people's thoughts, and even if you had some which you used, you'd never bring tricks like that to a competition.

      @psqsteasjuice Exactly. Some might say paper thin. Also, "the trick they saw, not that you did" is a hint for most tricks, but even more so here. Either way this was a very enjoyable trick and made me think! (I wasn't even positive I figured it out, but Mr. Hedne liked other people's comment, but not "Red"s up top, which was a strong hint)
      (also, this trick took more effort in terms of skill than Penn and Teller's trick in this episode! That wasn't a knock against P&T. Sometimes they do very complicated tricks and sometimes, it's incredible simple. Often, it seems with them that the more distraction/misdirection, the simpler the trick.)

    • @DL-kc8fc
      @DL-kc8fc 3 года назад +2

      @psqsteasjuice Some magicians do not understand "coded" messages because Penn improvises and often messes up the message. Even Penn sometimes doesn't understand his own message. However, the magicians are well behaved and pretend to understand Penn. But in this case, it was transparent - it was really the thin line (it's not just one line) that divided things into what was seen and the unseen.

    This trick is much easier than the guesses people are making. All that is required is that the number and card match when they are turned over, the whole trick is how that is done. The suit/number the participants choose make no difference, but it was the idea that they did that first had Penn and Teller thinking they had seen something impossible.

    • @bohnec1
      @bohnec1 3 года назад +5

      you said "All that is required is that the number and card match when they are turned over, the whole trick is how that is done.". Are you okay? Of course that's "all" that is required. I don't get you. That's the whole trick, how did he get it.

    • @37racso
      @37racso 3 года назад +5

      @@bohnec1 We never see all the cards, so the most plausible explanation is that he has a bunch of cards with the king of spades on the front and a bunch with 4 on the back. This should tell you everything. Regardless of which card would have been picked, the result would be the same as he has a specific selection of cards which, when turned over, will provide this exact same result on the other side. So what Jason said holds true, ONLY THE CARDS AFTER THE FINAL FLIP MUST MATCH.

    • @rays5163
      @rays5163 3 года назад +2

      @josip eric the "whole trick" was that he wantes you to believe they selected the right cards. That's why pen said the trick people are trying to figure out is impossible. I could tell you but it wouldn't really be okay to reveal stuff on the magicians own channel. What happens if the spectator picks a number or a card that is already part of your prediction? Has it happened before?

      Good question :) But hey, I can’t reveal all the secrets... ;)

    • @DL-kc8fc
      @DL-kc8fc 3 года назад +7

      If the number and card were selected from the same prediction, the cards would no longer be turned over and there would be a big round of applause. The magician could turn over these cards, but I personally would not do so to keep the principle secret. Now the answer to your question - if, for example, Alyson changed the number 33 to 4 (ten crosses would not change in this case), then a problem could arise, because turning both cards or one (crosses ten) would reveal the principle of some exchange. positions. It would be necessary to force another change of number in advance. (Force cards to change if cards match). There are more unwanted coincidences than happy coincidences. It is best if the spectators choose different cards and different numbers, or exactly the same numbers and cards from the prediction. The magician made a great presentation, which also includes a little skill.

    • @zygoloid
      @zygoloid 3 года назад +17

      My guess: four different outs:
      1) Neither number nor card matches prediction: as shown here.
      2) Number matches, card does not: find matching card in deck, amaze everyone by showing the number on the back is what the spectator said.
      3) Card matches, number does not: find number in deck, amaze everyone by showing the card with the selected number is what the spectator said.
      4) Both match: just reveal the prediction.
      If that's right, that seems really elegant: a ~1 in 26 chance of an even more amazing, even more impossible trick.

    • @zygoloid
      @zygoloid 3 года назад +3

      @Dara DeBuitlear There's a 51/2704 chance of out (2), a 51/2704 chance of out (3), and a 1/2704 chance of out (4), for a total of a 103/2704 chance (1 in 26.25...) of getting an even more amazing trick. I actually think the (much more likely) outs (2) and (3) are even more amazing than out (4), because (4) is just a little "too" impossible.

      @@zygoloid It is practically never allowed to reach any good or bad extreme. If the first card selection matches, the change is immediately enforced, because you cannot rely on a happy second selection match. Lapidally, a happy or unhappy match between the two cards will never be met, because the selection of an identical card or number is avoided at the very beginning or at the end of the act of selection by the method of repeated selection. Counting combinations is not applicable in this case.

    I know how this trick was done. Before the show began, he planted the suggestion of "clubs" into Alison's mind using remote-repetitive subliminal suggestions. He did this over the course of nearly 48 hours while camped out near her Las Vegas bungalow. Next, during the performance, he used a ULF interferometer to force the factorial 10! into the male audience member's mind. You can hear the electric noise in the background. And the cards used in the reveal were all prepared in advance. Easy!
