. chances are you will not read this...thank you for responding, Much love....! I was fortunate enough to have studied at Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle Washington. Which is the Juilliard for artists like myself. Which in the world of art it is one of the best schools you can possibly go to. So,I was extremely fortunate even if it was for a small amount of time. I will say....I attempted to take iconography and failed miserably! But I was able to sell several pieces to the members of our church who were blown away by what I was able to do and it is not even remotely 5% of the skill and Beauty you possess in your art!!. I can only strive to be as PATIENT as you, and that's a BIG one for me. I get frustrated and I want it done fast or I put it away because I get blocked. Therefore I have a million pieces that are unfinished....to the untrained eye they look done but they are NOT I have at least 50% more to go on almost all of them! I rarely am dumbfounded by artists and I got to tell you when I saw your stuff it blew me away and maybe if I wasn't Orthodox I wouldn't understand the beauty of iconography. The process, and steady hand, the eye, and education itself. It's mind blowing!!!! The respect and what they really truly mean, (Icons) a lot of people don't understand the history of what an icon even truly is. Your work is impeccable and you HAVE to love what you do and I shows with what WE see. God bless you and your beautiful work, it would be an honor, a true honor to ever have even one small piece of yours. I would worship it for the rest of my life. God bless and thank you for bringing SO MUCH Beauty into this world, that so many of us do not get a chance to see......❤🙏

Less than a minute in and we are seeing cinnabar being ground dry. Never grind cinnabar (or vermilion, its man-made equal; or, lead white) dry. Always wet it with something - even if it is rain water (which can then evaporate).
Apart from that, beautiful, informative and everything that it should be.

Hello, it’s amazing to see you work. I hope you won’t mind if I ask you a few artistic questions.
    - 1) What is your subsurface? Is it just regular Gesso or is it something special?
    - 2) Your paints:
2a) they are powdered tempra? where do you purchase them?
2b) is there are recipe for the ingredients & amounts of each item?
    - 3) Your liquid for mixing the paint & diluting it? - is that water? Oil? Something else?
    - 4) what type of brushes are those? What brush size numbers do you use?
    - 5) preservation:
5a) when you are finished - you put on it for glaze/protection; what is that glaze?
5b) how long do you need to let the surface dry before applying the glaze?
5c) how long do you let the glaze dry?
-6) what was the purpose of putting those 2 wooden slides on the back of the icon?
I know you are a very busy person so I definitely understand your time constraints. I am complete enamored with your work & I’ll definitely look for more to view.
Thank YOU so very much and sincerely,
    bb

      @Vlad-rb5nc 3 года назад +5

      1) It's gesso, applied on wood board treated with animal skin glue and a piece of cloth underneath. It's not acrylic gesso!!!(the acrylic gesso behaves like a regular acrylic paint, the gesso recommended implies animal skin glue, usually chalk powder and water, the surface being sanded until you get a smooth surface).
      2) Tempera never comes in powder (there's no such a thing). They used pigments. Traditional tempera is made out of grinded pigments and emulsion. The amount of pigments/emulsion depends on your preference. Usually the rule is to prepare it to be workable, to not crack and to adhere on the surface (eliminating the risk of flaking of during time). The consistency of tempera mixture is gained through experience and experimentation. Is not hard, just need some practice.
      3) It's used an egg emulsion. Now, I don't know the exact recipe that they use, but there are a couple of them. The most basic is 1:1 water-egg yolk (just the 'filling', not the skin, unless you want some bit of unaesthetic texture in you mixture) and a little bit of vinegar (to preserve it, because of the acid). There are other ones using ration of wine with egg yolk 2:1 or 1:1 (ditching the vinegar, you have acidity from wine...and vinegar can be made out of wine), the whole egg and even additional ingredients such as linseed oil ore sicative oil. Also depends on preferences and needs a little bit of practice, to see what's suitable for your work.
      5) The time recommended for an icon to dry is up to one week, to one month to even one year (the most recommended if you have the time, trust me, it's worth, the colors would be very very stable). The trickiest part with the tempera regarding the drying process is the fact that you are cheated by the fast drying appearance, but emulsion, being a stable mixture between water and a fat, will not dry as the water evaporates. The fat from egg yolk still remains and needs time to dry (as the oil painting needs). I heard artists 'glazing' their icons one or two days after the painting process ended. Now it depends on artist's experience, preferences and knowledge. But the most known time is that of one week or one month or one year.
Regarding the 'glaze', I think you are referring to the varnish. The varnish is the ultimate coat, the protective layer, and is not only the custom of iconography. It will not only protect your work and preserve the painting layer, but also gives unity to the composition. In some cases, if the colors are too bright and neon-eye-catch sort of shades, there are some varnishes that would make them 'tarnish', giving a milder-sweet tone and also unity because of the color which would be present in the entire surface (giving unity by adding the same color to all the shades and saving your work, in case if you didn't do that on purpose and everything was well-planned). In fact, even acrylic and oil paint needs a varnish. There is a wide variation of varnish: oil based, water, solvent and resin based (yes, water could be considered as solvent, but anyway), synthetic varnishes: here also you need to use what is suitable for your work and preference (and again the endless process of experimenting and trying, but here we are, unless you have a good teacher on your hand to call, to talk about or even practice). The drying time depends on the ingredients, like solvents, resins, etc. You can test it by the smell (trust me, it's not a joke): smell the varnish, being careful not to have some ingredients that would affect your health, and, when the smell disappears, than you have a dry surface. You can try the touching test...but if you leave a fingerprint mark, well... I wish you success fixing that. The reason why you need to be attentive with the smell is the fact that usually the solvent in the varnish is a so-called 'aromatic' compound. When the smell is gone, then the solvent is evaporated and the surface must be dried. Now, again depends, do you experimentations. The time could be up to a couple of hours (water-based varnishes) to a couple of days up to a week and maybe a month or so. This is why the process of an icon is very laborious and needs patience not because of the executions but because of the resting time required by each step.
P.S. Apologies both to you and to the owner of this channel, if I offended by answering to the questions or the answer itself seems to be offensive. All things that I shared are things that I learned through experience, being myself a self-taught. As a little pro-tip: never give-up, even if you are a self-taught, keep working, the results will come in time.
