Christ Pantocrator is my very favorite icon, and I think your drawing is beautiful and sensitive.

I have this icon in my house and I love it's beauty and representation of the duality of Christ. It's beautiful and you did a great job Jonathan.

Jonathan, your drawing of Christ is beautiful. You have such a lovely expression in His face.
    Well done.

That is the attitude which makes an artist! Endless self-improvement with a critical eye.

So happy to see you making this image! I have seen some of your videos and appreciate your thinking and passion! :-)
I am also about to start to paint this image (btw, the icons are said to be written, not painted), and started to indagate more about it.
    It's beautiful! 👍👍❣

With the one eye looking up. While the other eye looks at the viewer is incredibly difficult.
The one side speaks of grace while the other side of the face speaks of judgment.
I managed to do it by using India ink on canvass.
Unfortunately I am not able to show it. The icon is in another state.

It's an excellent drawing, Jonathan, but it doesn't have the full "mirror effect" as the original. A few years ago I found this icon online and spliced it in Photoshop, so I could mirror each side and see the whole of each "personality". It was striking. The one is entirely lamblike, while the other is most definitely lionlike. Of course, Christ is both lion and lamb in one. Perhaps if you had included the shoulders in your sketch that would have come through more. Having seen some of your carving work, I bet you could pull it off (with God's help).

When I watched this I thought about how hard it can be to cover certain songs. Sometimes the original artist's vocals are just so unique that the "spirit" of the song cannot be captured by anyone else. The best you can do is give it your own spirit. Is art similar?

How does one become an iconographer? I do not necessarily mean as a full-time profession. Rather, who can paint icons, and how are standards of production learned and achieved?

The best way is to find workshops with professional iconographers. I teach at a school that gives some of these. It is called Hexaemeron.

owwww cmon, it's only because it's ridiculously hard that you should do it. It will be fun man!

You're absolutely right that modern attempts at reproducing this image are very lacking to say the least. Your attempt however, I think did it justice.

I like you drawing. From my perspective, some of the gentle warmth and subtle humor in Christ's countenance of the original did not transfer over. It portrays a more serious Christ.

Very keen observation. This version is too solemn, I think what's missing is the slight smirk on the left side of His mouth (our right) and a little more light in his peaceful eye. What was wise and assuring turned stoic or even a bit mournful in my opinion.

I'm glad you're not happy with it. Because I know my icon teacher would be appalled with it. I know I would've destroyed it. I've destroyed 90% of what I painted.
And I had very strict teacher. Who made me draw the Face of Christ 25 times before painting it.

Try: should not be as a prototype because it defies imitation. Though there is case to be made that if you are using wax encaustic then it will work. Seeing that the Sinai Pantocrator was done in wax encaustic.

The prayer time , planing time and execution of the piece are at loggerheads to our everyday work ethic . As a Christian artist appreciation of the old icon painters, must have weighed heavy on you knowing the discipline of prayer and single minded training the old artisans had
