Harvest the scionwood during the later part of the dormant season while the buds are still tight. Store in the fridge wrapped in a moist towel inside of a partially open plastic bag. Grafting can begin before the tree is ready to push its buds and continue after the leaves have pushed late into the spring. Here in Northern California I start grafting in mid February and go until about late April.
I live in Northern, Ca as well :) This video was just what I needed to learn to graft my apple tree. What month do you put your scion wood in the fridge? January and then start grafting in February? I don't want to have my wood start getting mold in the fridge so I am hoping one month will be okay.
Wow...I didn't know graphing was as easy as it looked...thanks for the info...I have a good bit of fruit trees ... this could really come in handy. ♥ :)
Wow, very good video. I appreciate that you showed all the different types in one video, and with good camera angle to see it all. Grafting is so simple in theory (and in action it appears) but I'm still nervous that I won't do it right. I just pruned a few various fruit trees in my own yard and grafted some of the pruned wood back on lower to help shape the tree with a better crotch. If it doesn't work it's no big deal. I guess what I did were all side grafts, but I cut off the bark flap. I can see now I should not have done that. So it's a combination of a side and a whip graft I guess. Is there a particular time that's best to graft? Like, right at bud swell? I worry I may have done it a bit soon, but I think we'll start seeing bud swell in the next month or so down here in Houston. The cambium layer was green and moist.
A year ago, grafting was "the dark arts", but I had a RUclips binge, gave it a go and everything took, although I had one graft ripped of by some idiot blundering through my property and another that was displaced but re-healed. This year, I have some confidence and have done a dozen or so grafts of varieties that are impossible to obtain locally but can be mail ordered as scions.
I really like your other upload and now i'm about to watch this one, I subbed you and hope you put more uploads on, no not hope i'm praying you do ! I can see me in a place like that. I would love to go full solar power, grow own food etc.
I use the side graft when the size of the freshly cut branch is over about 2 or 3 inches which is too big to split for making a cleft graft. Also the side graft can be used to add a graft in the middle of the tree to make another branch.
FIVE STARS *****, Thanks for sharing all of your insightful information, I really appreciate what you are doing and sharing with everyone in the world. Including me… Make it a great day.
im from long beac. california, usda zone10b.when is the best month to collect scion wood and when is the best month to graft and tbudding on apple tree..ty so much.
I use bee's wax which comes from the honey bee's hives. There are other waxes that would work fine like cheese wax. Also there are paints that do a fine job of covering the grafts, one is called Doc Farwell's tree seal. Thanks for your compliment
I graft roses stone fruits apples and citrus using the narrow green tape. I just tape the whole scion as well and also cover with clear tape, in particular for citrus in spring since they are bad for having moisture loss. I just cut down the middle and match the scion to it. Works great.
Hey! With your help I was able to successfully graft a half dozen or so scions onto my trees this spring. I'm wondering tho, when should I remove the tape and sealant?
OH MY GOSH YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT SAID THE ONLY THING THAT MAID ANY SINCE ON HOW TO SEAL THE TREE IS BEE SAP THE NATURAL AND ONLY THING TO DO IS VERY GOOD GOD BLESS YO ALL PLEASE DO THIS VERY GOOD
I really enjoyed your updates. I find it very educating. Can you please advise, i just purchased apple M26 rootstock...so, when can i graft the scion wood onto the rootstock? Thank you once again.
+gideon dimai With rootstock that is not in the ground yet I benchgraft close to the time that I will plant the tree in the ground. Here in Northern California that is usually in February.
It's wonderful , can you please spell for me the name of the wax you are using and the tape and where could I buy that stuffs???? ..... thanks a lot ....
what is the best pruning knife? im just a beginner..trying to know basic ..i did tried grafting citrus tree and it works...but i just use kitchen knife..want good stuff for future use..thnks! great video btw..
Hey, I really appreciate the detailed step-by-step instructions on various types of grafting. ALSO, thanks for the late season followup with the same grafting job to see how the growth took. I've used a cleft graft on one of my peach varieties (on a sacrifice branch) and I am excited to see the outcome. I have 3 apple trees close to each other and would like to graft in two of the other varieties into one tree just to try something cool. I believe those online companies sell trees that have three varieties the cross pollinate each other already. So that's how they do it!! Thanks again..
Hi there, would you please give me some advice? I'd like to graft some of my more appreciated trees onto rootstock that has grown wildly in the yard. Do I have to take the scion and store it over winter or can I do it at the same time I begin grafting(which I suppose it's before vegetation starts). Thank you, nice videos.
does grafting work by combining traits of two plants together? like can you graft lilac with crab apple and then you will get a crab apple tree smelling a little like lilac??
Great video! Specially followed up to show the results. Very educational. Thanks! One question, can I graft apple tree on crap apple trees? crap apple trees are native trees in New Jersey.
I harvest the scion wood for grafting in late winter from trees that I know to be of a great variety. I think that it might be difficult to find scion wood to buy.
Hi Feng Yun, Please look online for "North American Scion Exchange". You can trade scions by mail. If you have nothing to trade yourself, you can offer to pay postage/bubblewrap envelope & offer a small payment to someone who has the variety (s) you want to try grafting. It's an online community & the people are often helpful.
Thank you! I will definitely keep this resource. I am new, just start this year, my apple tree will come on the end of month, I will have to wait to graft. But I will do when it is ready. Enjoy your video, thanks.
I have a cherry tree that’s 14 years old an never fruits but has beautiful white blossoms, I’ve found a wild cherry tree today that blossoms pink , can I graft the two ? Is it too late now ? An can I graft the pink cherry blossoms tree to a year old sycamore at the bottom of my garden ? Sorry for so many question at once but I’d love to graft the pink blossoms in my garden. Thank you 🙏
nice video, just curious why you use the green tying tape instead of 4 mil white propagation tape which wont girdle. of course if you are only doing a couple of grafts in the back yard. I guess its no big deal to remove it.
Bro I'm planting m9 with King roat and jeromine . Side is sunny(7am to 7pm) spacing half meter (0.50 MTR , or 2 feet....) is it may be good or not ? Suggest me please....?
His left hand is bleeding he is so strong if If I was there in your place I would sit at home and do the medical treatment this is called a true love for gardening
a very large branch fell off an oak tree during a storm and knocked the top off two maple trees that I had started and were doing quite nicely. the tops that were lost were several inches in diameter. I have many trees in my yard. Is it possible to take a small tree and graft it to the top of my injured trees. Where might I find an example of doing such a project. I am assuming I would have to splint the old to new sections.
@10:11 Do you try to make cuttings of that pruned stuff? So those stems do not go to waste? ..Or is it too difficult to get a cutting from those areas of the tree?
so you grafted apple branches onto what type of tree? because i hear a willow tree would be best because it has healing properties for plants and it was widely used for rooting compound
they graft it onto other apple trees. the Apple trees they use as root stock produce bad fruit, but are very hardy and don't grow as big, so it's good for orchards
I like that you showed 2 different methods. Thanks also for the great, complete and clear instructions.

I seen 3 methods lol

Wow thank you... if you wrap them in a towel, do you have to change the towel? In wisconsin we have longer winters ? Thx
I'll be grafting this spring. Thanks for showing what the grafts look like after 6 months. Other sites rarely show the successful grafts.

The green plastic tape is common garden tape easily found in many garden centers. It comes in a few different widths.
спасибо, хороший урок.

As long as the scions are dormant you should be good. You do not have to store over Winter. You can do it at the same time.
does grafting work by combining traits of two plants together? like can you graft lilac with crab apple and then you will get a crab apple tree smelling a little like lilac??
Please tell me what type of gel is used after grafting
excellent presentation
Thank you man.

Thanks man!
Great video! Specially followed up to show the results. Very educational. Thanks! One question, can I graft apple tree on crap apple trees? crap apple trees are native trees in New Jersey.
Yes, you can graft a apple on to a crab apple.
Thanks! Would you please recommend where to buy the graft wood?

i understand that part how long does it take to heal
So what kind of tree can you graft an apple tree limb to? Does it have to be apple species?
very helpful.
Nice grafting
@10:11
Do you try to make cuttings of that pruned stuff? So those stems do not go to waste? ..Or is it too difficult to get a cutting from those areas of the tree?
Kindly mention the best season of grafting.
when is the best time to do grafting
Good luck and good worke

How large of a trunk could you side graft to? Could you do it to a large overgrown tree? With like an 8" trunk??
I only graft in the late winter.
I chip bud citrus in the fall.
