    Harvest the scionwood during the later part of the dormant season while the buds are still tight. Store in the fridge wrapped in a moist towel inside of a partially open plastic bag. Grafting can begin before the tree is ready to push its buds and continue after the leaves have pushed late into the spring. Here in Northern California I start grafting in mid February and go until about late April.

    • @tamarabonet9438
      @tamarabonet9438 3 года назад

      I live in Northern, Ca as well :) This video was just what I needed to learn to graft my apple tree. What month do you put your scion wood in the fridge? January and then start grafting in February? I don't want to have my wood start getting mold in the fridge so I am hoping one month will be okay.

    Wow, very good video. I appreciate that you showed all the different types in one video, and with good camera angle to see it all. Grafting is so simple in theory (and in action it appears) but I'm still nervous that I won't do it right. I just pruned a few various fruit trees in my own yard and grafted some of the pruned wood back on lower to help shape the tree with a better crotch. If it doesn't work it's no big deal. I guess what I did were all side grafts, but I cut off the bark flap. I can see now I should not have done that. So it's a combination of a side and a whip graft I guess.
    Is there a particular time that's best to graft? Like, right at bud swell? I worry I may have done it a bit soon, but I think we'll start seeing bud swell in the next month or so down here in Houston. The cambium layer was green and moist.

    A year ago, grafting was "the dark arts", but I had a RUclips binge, gave it a go and everything took, although I had one graft ripped of by some idiot blundering through my property and another that was displaced but re-healed.
    This year, I have some confidence and have done a dozen or so grafts of varieties that are impossible to obtain locally but can be mail ordered as scions.

    I use the side graft when the size of the freshly cut branch is over about 2 or 3 inches which is too big to split for making a cleft graft. Also the side graft can be used to add a graft in the middle of the tree to make another branch.

      I use bee's wax which comes from the honey bee's hives. There are other waxes that would work fine like cheese wax. Also there are paints that do a fine job of covering the grafts, one is called Doc Farwell's tree seal. Thanks for your compliment

    I graft roses stone fruits apples and citrus using the narrow green tape. I just tape the whole scion as well and also cover with clear tape, in particular for citrus in spring since they are bad for having moisture loss. I just cut down the middle and match the scion to it. Works great.

    Hey, I really appreciate the detailed step-by-step instructions on various types of grafting. ALSO, thanks for the late season followup with the same grafting job to see how the growth took. I've used a cleft graft on one of my peach varieties (on a sacrifice branch) and I am excited to see the outcome.
    I have 3 apple trees close to each other and would like to graft in two of the other varieties into one tree just to try something cool. I believe those online companies sell trees that have three varieties the cross pollinate each other already. So that's how they do it!! Thanks again..

    Hi there, would you please give me some advice? I'd like to graft some of my more appreciated trees onto rootstock that has grown wildly in the yard. Do I have to take the scion and store it over winter or can I do it at the same time I begin grafting(which I suppose it's before vegetation starts). Thank you, nice videos.

    • @hunterreed1010
      @hunterreed1010 Год назад

      As long as the scions are dormant you should be good. You do not have to store over Winter. You can do it at the same time.

      Hi Feng Yun, Please look online for "North American Scion Exchange". You can trade scions by mail. If you have nothing to trade yourself, you can offer to pay postage/bubblewrap envelope & offer a small payment to someone who has the variety (s) you want to try grafting. It's an online community & the people are often helpful.

    a very large branch fell off an oak tree during a storm and knocked the top off two maple trees that I had started and were doing quite nicely. the tops that were lost were several inches in diameter. I have many trees in my yard. Is it possible to take a small tree and graft it to the top of my injured trees. Where might I find an example of doing such a project. I am assuming I would have to splint the old to new sections.
