I'm not so worried about losing the transition buffer, because with the conversion of Splash Mountain to Tiana's Bayou Adventure, that whole region is now New Orleans / Louisiana bayou theme. Leota's carriage house looks like the perfect blend of the mansion's architecture, with the garden/natural elements found next door at the salt dome mine. From the other side it could look like a shed.

  • @fafolguy

I think the design of Madame Leota's fits in well and will help transition from mansion to Tiana's more smoothly. It also follows the flow of the actual city. The storytelling will then be: Old New Orleans in the time of Pirates which transitions into the French Quarter of the early 20th century then into the Garden District/Uptown areas of the city where the giant mansions and very haunted atmosphere are located, followed by a more low country bayou aesthetic which leads perfectly into the new theming for the bayou adventure. It's backwards in direction from the actual New Orleans (the bayou/swampy parts are to the west of the city with the Garden District central, then the French Quarter to the east-ish) but it follows the same geographical/historical transitions. I can see the feeling of abrupt theme changes but that's more like modern New Orleans than anything currently in New Orleans Square.

The covered "building" in from of the train station looks like the popcorn cart.
I actually like the current non-ADA compliant system because it's basically a free fast pass. Same is true for Pirates. But it does require 2 to 4 extra cast members to manage it.
It's sad the garden is being removed, but the new queue is beautiful.
Good catch on the selfie stick.

This all sounds great! As a wheelchair user, it looks to me like they're going to make the entire queue accessible. That will allow them to get rid of some accommodations around the outside of the mansion and free up a bit of space. As to the walled garden you started with, my guess is that the openings on the left and right (as we're looking in the concept art) are probably only to get a glimpse inside. The queue would go to the back side, loop around, and then head back out the same way you came in. Then finish the trip around the outside of the wall, with an optional detour into that covered space. A guess there is that it would be a left turn in, head to the end, all the way across the far side to the other end, then turn around again before a left turn out. That should leave spaces wide enough for wheelchairs and scooters, while making the turns possible in a chair or ECV.
For accessible entry into the railroad, pretty much keep things as they are, except the ramp up the exit would be along this new wall for the Haunted Mansion queue. Maybe - just maybe - they'd widen that a bit so there's more room for the wheelchairs to queue up and still leave room for passengers getting off the train. That gets pretty cozy there at times.

I don't know if they are rushing the transition between Haunted Mansion and Tiana's Bayou Adventure, because they would match. The transition space was needed when Splash Mountain was there, because the areas are in stark contrast. Plus the concept art makes the new shop building looks like it's supposed to be there. Like it's a carriage house for the Mansion.

I think if you look at the overhead view using a map (or overhead in Disneyland app map), it’s easier to see how this can fit in. And yes, removing/relocating some walls, lawn, trees… both drawings will fit side by side using the fountain (wall) as a divider. Also I believe they are adding a ramp and an elevator for ADA which may use the new covered HM queue area. The overhead view and alignment really helps.

As much as I dislike Disney's management, I'd like to applaud the Disneyland Resort for continuing to invest in projects that improve guest flow and experience. While I initially hated the idea of Project Stardust (lowering curbs and shrinking planters), it definitely was an improvement. Then came the reimagining of Plaza Point, Pelican Landing, Merlin's Magic Shop, Eudora's Boutique, ToonTown, Adventureland Treehouse, Tiana's Palace, and now this. Everything just flows together much better, and there is better utilization of space. Is it perfect? Of course not. But they seem to be doing a good job with what they have.

I am so excited to see how all this concept art is going to translate into the finished product. I think it makes sense to finally bring the HM merchandise closer to the attraction. I was thinking about Port Royal and honestly, based on your earlier news of brining more alcohol to the parks, I wonder if it could be possible to make the current Haunted Mansion gift shop into a Pirate's themed bar. They could do different pirate themed beverages and maybe some of those foods that are made in other areas of the park and then dropped off at carts. I can imagine the immersion around having a rum based drink to wash down a turkey leg after enjoying the attraction.

I think merging the lands is the point. Tiana's Bayou (Splash) is part of Louisiana Square now and not Critter Country anymore. What I don't understand is how they are going to incorporate Pooh and Hungry Bear. I was talking with my Disneyland Crew about how it's almost like Frontierland stretches across the Rivers of America to grab former critter country, Tom Sawyer's, and the canoes. They should add something to connect them more thoroughly.

@@jish55if you really think the Rescuers is replacing Pooh, you're on one LMAOOO
Whether or not it makes thematic sense for Pooh to be right next to New Orleans Square is kinda irrelevant lol. It's about what's popular and what's not. Pooh is popular. Most people nowadays couldn't name you a single character in the Rescuers 😂😂😂 Pooh merch flies off the shelves. Again, the Rescuers is a dead brand and probably has been for decades at this point LOL. It's like saying "I think they'll replace Tom Sawyers Island with an Angels in the Outfield attraction". Its like okay I get replacing Tom's Island but with what? And Pooh is even more popular than Tom Sawyer. And you're talking about the Rescuers? Come on. Would it make sense from a perspective of like transition from land to land? Sure. Will they eventually replace Pooh or replace him there and giving him a new ride? Sure! Will they replace Pooh with a less popular IP? Unlikely.
Someone gave an idea of replacing Pooh with a second Princess and the Frog ride. That's more likely tbfh. Probably not happening but much more likely than anything else I could imagine. I think it's most likely they'll just make a Pooh area isolated from the rest of NOS

When New Orleans Square first opened, Port Royal Curios used to be Mademoiselle Antoinette's Antique Shop and Beverly was the Cast Member who portrayed Mademoiselle Antionette. Edna Disney, Roy's wife, used to go shopping in France and New Orleans once a year and to purchases antiques and ahve them shipped back to Disneyland, then store them backstage in one of the warehouses, waiting to be sold. Once Fantasmic became a thing, the sales slowed down and eventually the shop was no longer as successful as it once was. This happened about the same time The Disney Gallery was moved to Main Street.

My bet is that the circular fountain has now become a two sided fountain. One inside the garden wall and one outside with the brick steps. Also one of the gardens is supposed to reference Madam Leota so I suspect the statuary and items in the tree may be "floating" musical instruments and such.

From the concept art, it looks like the existing switch back queue will just have an awning added to it which will provide much needed shade. I'd be surprised if they shortened up the space so less people can be in line, HM is too popular especially during the holidays. The extra queue space they're going to add with theming doesn't look big enough to accommodate the spill over the current space provides on busy days. I love that they're adding a HM specific shop, I'm curious if Port Royal Curios and Curiosities next to Pieces of Eight will change.

I think it's obvious that Madame Liota shop is a more permanent solution to the quick fix random pop up Nightmare merch. Glad everything is getting a proper home!

This is exactly what I was thinking. New queue goes to the current fountain. Rest of the gardens is reworked into a little area with the bandstand now opened up on both sides. Also the planters are made a lot smaller, around the trees, freeing up space.

I still wonder about them closing the ride as they said something about adding an elevator. That’s pretty extensive construction, unless it’s more of an external lift.
The existing gift shop, I think is going to be Tiana’s, they will move her stuff forward since it’s hidden in the back.
The new gift shop, I think will blend well. They seem to be trying to blend everything together a bit more with the New Orleans theme. The new gift shop looks like a New Orleans metaphysical store.
Now, if they’d just have a haunted mansion themed restaurant…..

Essentially they’re creating Tianaland between Tiana’s Palace and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure with the Haunted Mansion caught in between. The gift shop gives an added visual unity utilizing the same yellow/green color palette.

I think it is just concept art to give a feeling of style and color, not necessarily a plan. And as such it's been exaggerated. If I'm seeing this right, it looks like the pergola will go against the wall by the RR track and provide a view block. The fountain could be reversed in the drawings because it may have been undecided at the time. If you remove the brick planters in Magnolia Gardens and remove the fast pass area there should be enough room to kick out the que gardens a bit. I hope they bring back the bench where you could watch the train in the station. That was great for us train fanatics! Then I will be very happy😁

The green covered items in front of the train steps look like carts ie. Churros and/or popcorn. As for the Madame Leota store there is a sizable empty space behind the current cart to the right. I have sat there during Happiest Haunts Tours.

The transition between Adventureland and Frontierland (through the alleyway by the bathrooms) only works if you don't look back, because you can see the entrance to Adventureland whilst you're in Frontierland. So you have the log themes and the papaya roof. (I have a photo.) Lol! 😆

A lot of these projects are like projects, Stardust scale projects. Just re-shaping pavers and planters. They could arguably have much of this done in a couple of weeks. The gift shop, however will take months.

Hello, thanks for the update! I’m super excited about it, it’s my favorite ride. I’m glad they are moving the store closer, I always thought it was weird to have the gift shop so far and separated from the ride. There is actually a lot of “dead space” between the Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain. It would go back a ways from the outside vender and there wasn’t much there except trying to get side views of Splash. It’s probably enough for a cute little store. I think it will be nice to have more room for pirate Merch too. The little outdoor area between Port Royal and Pieces of Eight are where the Bootstrappers play when it gets really hot. Makes for nice acoustics too :) I know the move seems a little tight and different but I think we will be pleasantly surprised :D

This is the video I was looking forward too, always appreciate insights on projects like this! I feel like, when several Disney Imagineers went down to New Orleans a few years ago to get inspiration for Tiana's Bayou Adventure and came back, they envisioned a years long master plan to redo that entire stretch by the Rivers of America. This also completing the same year as the Bayou Adventure is no coincidence and works perfectly for a cohesive and great transition between the different areas. Keep up the good work Disneyland Ops and Imagineers!

    Hi David,
I'm guessing that the long green covered walkway on the right side is a down ramp for the ADA compliance. It won't (can't) intrude on the Railway Station, and looks like it will sit where the fastpass used to be. The new downramp can then connect to the current cast member access leading down to the portrait hall. The reason they are tearing up the current behind-the-wall queue area is because a certain amount of demolition will have to be done to be able to connect existing backstage ramps to the new access. Something very like this was being talked about before the pandemic, but was shelved for various resons. It looks like they finally came up with a solution to keep everyone happy.

David, if you're right about the two fountains in the concept art sharing a wall, then I believe that first concept picture has you orientated directly in front of the Mansion (obviously at an elevated position) looking south east towards Tiana's Palace

I think the structure in the background of the second concept art picture is a drink cart next to a popcorn cart. At first glance, it looks like it’s near the train station, but I think it’s closer to the beignet entrance

FreshBaked. David, an aerial photo of this area shows the spaces to be on the tight side. Where Magnolia Gardens is now that used to be all lawn inside a low walled area. You asked how long the construction of all this will take? Disney are shipping in some Epic Universe workers and they'll have it done and dusted in a fortnight. But if they were to use the "Treehouse" crew, they'd struggle to have it all finished by October 2024. Interesting times, but I'm loving the way the Imagineer's are just upgrading little area's around the park. Long may it continue. Cheers, Chris Perry.

The lower right "garden" looks more like a pergola that has flowers and vines, etc draped on that would be above our heads. If you look to the side, you can see the tall wooden legs that would be suspending what looks like a garden on the ground.. The switch backs would be underneath the shaded pergola. This is what I see.

  • @ctschofield1

Looks like an ADA ramp that starts at the train station and goes down the back side of Magnolia Gardens covered by that green covering with a bridge in the regular old cue that goes over it for access to that back door entry.

On my recent visit, I was lamenting that the old fast pass space was being neglected. I love the theming in that area. I am glad to see there are plans for it and that the statues and such will likely be repurposed. Haunted Mansion, along with Pirates, is one of my all time favorite attractions at any park (and I am a huge Star Wars fan). The old school attractions are the best. I just hope they don’t close the ride itself for that time period. Thanks for all of the details on the concept art. I enjoy hearing your expert opinions.

I like the fence! But I'm hoping they add interactive elements to the queue like Disney World's.
Disney bought a hotel across the street and demolished it to build a parking garage. They never followed through.
They closed Rainforest Cafe and the movie theater in Downtown Disney for a project that fell through.
Who knows why they do what they do?

Move the Madam Leota shop over a bit, the exit of the attraction flows into the store (I.e. Star Wars in Tomorrowland/ and Toonetown Micky’s runaway rail way)
