This misses the epilogue, which takes place at a conference studying the history Gilead (decades after it fell). It is revealed the 'Handmaid's Tale' was recorded on cassette tapes and it is unclear whether these represent an actual woman's life or are fictitious. There is a tentative identification of Fred and it is revealed almost all the 'Commanders' were infertile through exposure to radiation.
Thank you. Your post helps me to think maybe watching the series would not be just one bummer after another. Everything I've ever seen about it has kept me from taking interest because depressive entertainment is unhealthy, IMO.

I absolutely *love* Atwood's writing in "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Testaments." I'm glad to see that someone is able to shrink down the story into something more digestable.
Interesting that Atwood said when writing this book she wouldn’t make it up but take inspiration from what has happened to woman in other parts of the world.
We voted for the United States to be reformed into an autocratic INGSOC-like government (Orwell's "1984") and a "Brave New World"-like (Aldus Huxley) society. American society is now ran by manipulative propaganda, conditioned polarization, conditioned hatred, racism and discrimination, misogyny, and the admiration for autocratic/dictative power. I read this book when it was first released, in the eighties, inspired by the Reagan administration. It's not one I wanted to read again. But I've been impressed with the renewed popularity with the miniseries and then the streaming television series. And particularly now, when what's left of the Republican Party seems to be striving to establish Gilead here and now.
Did you know that republican women own more boomsticks than Democrat men. ? Any chance we have learned that bad talking men is not the best way to get votes? My grandmother filled a pickup truck with meat in 1 day.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Reagan administration was the first to start reducing federal funds for schools? Both Bush did their own dirty work for this system too. Crazy how good the Republican party is at the long game. We are going to be fighting for women's right to vote before we know it.
I'm a strong believer in phonics, and it's true that G followed by I or E is sometimes pronounced like J, as in gentle or giant. But there are always exceptions, such as girl. And, according to everything I've ever heard (until this video) or can find online, Gilead is such an exception. The G is hard. The first syllable of Gilead is pronounced like gill, the breathing organ of a fish, not Jill, the feminine name. (Gilead IS pronounced with a hard G ONCE, at 6:08, but all the others are soft G--how did that one hard G make it in?)
Thank you for this. Like with The Scarlet Letter, I just couldn’t stand to listen to hours of the stupid unfairness that some people seem to think is a good idea
I hate when a book or movie ends in a mystery where the reader has no idea how the story ends. If I have to come up with my own ending, I may as well come up with my own beginning and middle and not have ever bothered with it at all.
This is speculative fiction and there really was no "ending". It was speculating what could happen and it left it to us to think about and ponder "what if".
Well done! Atwood is one of my favorite authors. Her deep understanding of the absence of equity in human relationships is appropriate for our times, as fascism raises its ugly head once again.
Seriously??? In the past woman couldn’t vote, go to college, open a credit card or bank acct without husbands signature, get birth control and the list goes on and on.
