My smallest Leica M lens, (Lastest Leica 28mm f2.8 ASPH*) Zero distortion, crazy sharp, the Leica 28mm f2.8 ASPH version is super small (especially without the hood). 28mm gives a great lens for Leica street photography, travel or environmental style 28mm portraits. Isn't a 28mm portrait too wide and distorted? Yes 28mm lens street photography is a lot more popular but street portraits can be fun too.. in my case with models. If you want a small 28mm lens cheaper than the Leica Summaron 28mm f5.6 this is my favourite. Example photos with Leica M240, Leica M8, Leica M6 and Leica M2. The Leica Elmarit 28mm f2.8 is sharp wide open and sharp corner to corner sharp by f4. An amazing little lens. Highly recommended! (The Elmarit ASPH 28mm is smaller than older Leica Elmarit lenses*).

I agree, this 28mm Elmarit is a marvel. This is the ideal lens for street or landscape photography. The DOF is better than a 35mm. In addition it is very compact. The large aperture is not necessary for me, the summilux is bigger, heavier and much more expensive. It's the cheapest of the 28mm at Leica, it's still affordable and will soon be part of my bag. With your talent you even proved to those who doubted it that we can also take excellent portraits with this lens.

Hi Matt. I truly enjoy your reviews. I recently picked up the new smaller version Voigtlander 28 mm f2.0 Ultron II (black paint). I’m in love! It sounds like this little Elmarit is pretty great too. I enjoy the f2.0 maximum aperture though as well.

I use the same elmarit-m 28mm asph with my M9 and it's super sharp. Fantastic lens. I recently purchased an XPro 2 with the 18mm f2. The Fuji is a great budget alternative, however the Leica M9 with the 28mm has something special.

Thanks for all the 28mm lens reviews. This Elmarit-M ASPH is the winner for me and that's final . When I pick up the M6 I bought in 2018, an as-new example waiting for me in Germany, I will swing by Leitz Park to get the 28mm and the new Summilux-M 1:1.4/35mm.
I'm only a 90% "Leica Purist" because I bought the Zeiss Biogon ZM 1:4.5/21mm for distortion-free imaging on film. In my M3 outfit are the 35mm Summicron and Summaron lenses, both beautiful examples, with goggles of course. That completes the wide angle requirements...
.. ohh, then there's the Super Angulon 28mm shift lens, now fitted with a Nikon F mount for use on the F3, D300 and F100.
All done. .. maybe. 🤪
Thanks, yes the Elmarit is a nice lens for sure. I love the size. Agreed Biogon lenses have the edge. I have 21 & 25 ZM. Very good optics, average build. I like the Voigtlander SL lenses for F mount. Had me FE2 today but found it easier to focus IIIG.
I use this lens on a M262, mainly for travel photographie ; and I really like it. It's the total frame of the rangefinder and its size makes the combo body / lens very discreet.
I hesitated to sold it and buy a second hand Leica Q. But at the end I think I'll keep it because shooting with a M or a Q is not the same pleasure for me.
For all other purpose, I use with a 50 summilux (80% of my pictures).

I was looking deep in your flickr and I notice that you have or use to have the Nikkor 35mm 1.4, I would love to see a review of this lens there is no much info here in RUclips about it. Specially explamples on black and white film, I love the contrast in your photos in film. Regards!
enmunfi Thanks I’m happy you found me the “blog route” as I only just added the video. Thanks for checking my work and yes I have a lot of medium format stuff waiting patiently but I don’t want to scare off all the Leica only fans so I’ll need to do it gradually I think! :). I’d love to share the 35/1.4 G Nikkor but that is one of the few lenses I sold. Lenses without aperture rings and manual controls scare me!! They feel very short term (even though I have a few others). I’m happier with metal and glass style lenses. It is an excellent lens, very sharp wide open but as G version it wont work on most Nikon film bodies. Of my 6 bodies I think only the F5 but I bought that after selling. Check the Tamron 45mm f1.8. I have it, very similar and amazing too. Similar to G design.
The 28mm Summilux is probably the sharpest and best 28mm lens I've owned. The subject isolation for portraits is awesome. It also has quite a distinct rendering. Definitely my favourite 28mm, it's only the size and price that lets it down.
Dave Andrews Thanks Dave, if I was more of a 28mm/35mm shooter I would look at it but as you say it isn’t that cheap. I did test in London and it is great. (I have a 24mm f1.4 Nikon mount lens which I used to use for similar fun but it doesn’t have the same image quality!).
Have the same 28 Summilux... On the SL it's a dream. Now I'm using it on my M, it's difficult to compose through the rangefinder due to the lens hood which is taking a lot of view.

I've been thinking about expanding from my M-Rokkor 40mm for my Minolta CLE and buying the Elmarit-M 28mm ASPH for it's compact size and sharpness, over the Voigtlander for the same reasons you described. Thanks for sharing! Think I'll get the lens first for my CLE before I get a M4-P

What do you think about the Zeiss Biogon 28mm ZM as another alternative?
jusren Biogon are amazing. See the 21 or 25mm video for a visual. I don’t have the 28 version but they have great micro contrast. Just bigger lenses vs Elmarit
My first 28mm was a Kiron lens with my Minolta XG-1. I was very happy with the results.

I already owned the Ultron 28 mm 2.0 before I got my M8 early 2009. It was my primary used lens on the M8. Compared to the Ultron 35 mm 1.7 asph (ltm that I use with a type II Voigtländer adapter) I found the 35 mm Ultron gave sharper results. Finally about 3 years ago I purchased the Leica Elmarit 28 mm 2.8 asph and that’s now my to go lens due it being small, light and sharp, but I still have the Ultron in case of lower light conditions with the M8. I also do not use the hood of the Elmarit mainly because I don’t like it.

28mm 2.8 elmarit is my everyday lens on my m6, taking it to tokyo in 3 hours.

The Leica Elmarit-M 28mm 2.8 Asph. and the Leica Macro-Elmar-M 90mm 4.0 are a perfect combo, though I would prefer a similar compact 24mm 3.4 Lens together with a Fullframe Camera with built-in EVF and no Rangefinder :)

I had this lens and loved it but had to sell it. Later I bought a Ricoh Gr1s compact film camera so I use that as my 28mm lens now, great camera quite different rendering to the Leica, much cooler.

Yes, for street photography, but I need architecture to be rendered free of distortion. Then for photographing artwork, again to be free of distortion.
I’ve never compared lenses for distortion as it doesn’t matter for portraits. Leicas are normally pretty good but do some research to check. Modern lenses that use software to correct distortion like Sigma L mount might offer the best value. (Sony equivalent)

I carry without anything and add lens cap when in my bag. It’s not out all day, just as needed.

Hi Paul, about the lens or the camera? I guess you mean the lens? Not much to say.. nice size, super sharp, you can use the M10 28mm framelines so it's a great combo. :)
The 28mm focal length is one that I have never gotten on with, I have even used some of those ‘legendary’ 28mm lenses that people rave about, and I just cannot do it. It is too wide for daily use, and no where near wide enough for my wide angle uses. But as always, good video Matt, look forward to the next one.

I actually use 50mmf2 on my Fuji XT1s for street photography, so like 75mm on a FF camera. That and the 23mm f2, so 35mm o a FF. Don't really like shooting too wide, like to focus more on my subjects than their surroundings

What do you think about early version of elmarit 28mm f2.8? Like Canada one. I have a voightlander ultron 28mm f2. Is it worth to upgrade? Or any recommendations? My budget is under $1000
I'd get the v2 Ultron (see that video.. it beats the v1 Summicron 28mm easily). I sold my Leica f2. Not sure about the v1 Elmarit but probably similar to Cron.
Reserved a pre-owned 28mm Summicron (my current 35, 50 & 90mm are all Crons) in AB condition at my local Leica Store. Would you rather go for the new 28mm Elmarit new or Summicron used if size & weight wasn’t an issue? Thanks for your reviews Matt.
Hi Martin, I sold the Summicron 28 and replaced with the Voigtlander 28mm f2 v2. I still have the Elmarit for the size. If you don't need f2 get the Elmarit for sure of the 2 you are looking at.
Favorite 28 mm M-mount lens for me is the CV 28/2 Ultron for the best price/quality ratio. I looked for hours into new and older Leica 28 mm type lenses with the result that I all found them overpriced. The older Leica type 28 mm lenses have a lower image quality than the CV 28/2 and cost twice as much - also a no-go for me. So far the CV 28/2 does everything I need the lens for, and I am very happy with it. Btw, great videos this week, I wonder all the effort you put in here (lens/camera cost and time!). Amazing!
Martin's Analog Photo Channel Thanks Martin, yes value wise it’s great. Yes I think vs older Leica 28mm it’s similar. I only got the Summicron ASPH for that extra sharpness for weddings..but at the cost. Yes it takes a lot of time but hopefully the efforts will pay off in the long term! Happy people are liking them. I’m learning as I go!

Just bought the 28mm elmarit-R for an SL and CL, based on price. Have you had the chance to weigh the difference between the -M and -R versions (other than the rangefinder coupling of course).
Great! I have the 24R. R lenses are usually softer than M (and bigger) but you can focus closer with the wides and yes the price is much better. Softer isn't always bad.
Made for SLR's but adaptable to a leica with zone focusing: pentax smc K 28mm f3.5
Nice, use with EVF for say M240 if want to focus!

Love the 28mm focal length, I've only just recently acquired mine after a long break from photography. Previously I had the 24 & 35 as my wides, but more by circumstance than design I've somehow landed on the 28MM Summilux. It's a lens that I feel I can just leave on my M111P. WIth the 35, I am probably always thinking about a lens change. and the 24 is a little more specialised. 28mm hits the sweet spot for me. With the 28, I'm more likely to change how I'm framing the image in order to accomodate the FOV. I'm only taking it off to go to the 75 APO... the 50 is a bit redundant really. If not for the 75mm, I feel like I'm shooting on a Q3... lol. Glad I didn't go down that path though. The additional options would have just complicated things The less buttons to press and menu options... the better!!!

thats the one I got and being an M10 user I think f2 is not really needed if I need better seperation I use a longer lens

Hi Stephen, sorry I don’t. I went straight for the smallest lens and didn’t check others in route ha. I imagine like most Leica lenses, the older ones will have more character.

Currently I only have the Voigtländer, I need to get more used to it before steppig up to the Leica. Honestly Iam not even sure if with 28mm which involves a lot of saving, a Q used wouldn't make sense.

Hi Bernard, the 28mm Elmarit has the edge BUT... as an M8 shooter I would suggest the Ultron to you as M8 users need that extra light! If you work in bright conditions then get the Elmarit. :)
Just sold my voigtlander Ultron for the ricoh 28mm ltm. Matt is probably right in that the Ultrons f2 is more useful, but I find the voigtlander lacks character

Hi! I can't tell you which lens would suit you the best but if you need wider than 35mm the little 28mm Elmarit is excellent. I still have mine.

Yes i've not used a Canon R5 so i'm not sure but if you can get a leica M adapter then yes it should be fine.

Sean Gao Amazing yes but I’m probably a 90% 50mm shooter so I have other FL such as 28mm just for those occasions. The Lux is amazing I did test it once in London! Background separation is lovely.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Personally I love to shoot ~50mm too (most often either 50 on FF or 40 on APS-C). I think the 28 Lux is more than background separation. It is unique in that it has both the angle of view (to draw the viewer in) and shallow DoF (creating a rather dreamy look wide-open).
I have considered multiple times getting that lens. Now my M7 is gone and I stick to my M4 dilemma is solved.

can this Leica Elmarit be adapted to an EF mount?
Hi Richard, RF lenses are not ideal on DSLR. (EF is DSLR?) If mirrorless body it’s better. I’ve not seen other Canon users doing this but it is possible I think. It’s not possible on Nikon F.
One thing people don't realize about the Leica 28mm lenses is there's not much of a difference between them. The Lux, Cron and Elmarit all look just about the same in rendering. Which is not the case for most other focal lengths. The 35mm Lux and Cron are very different. The 50 Noct, Lux, Cron AND Cron APO all have different looks. The same is true at 24mm, 75mm.... But at 28mm... if you stop the Lux down to 2.8 you're not likely to find a difference between the Lux and Elmarit. So does it really make sense to spend the extra money? For some people, definitely. But I think there's a LOT of people who don't realize how amazing this lens is, and with today's ISO capabilities, there's not a huge difference between the Lux and Elmarit at 28mm.

I believe I have the latest M ASPH version. I wanted the smallest one.
I have the same lens, just few dozens of SN from yours. It has vignetting and fringing, noticeable in bright days, but this can be fixed in edit.
What I don't like about this lens is its lens hood. First - it is plastic, not really in line with the price, second - the lens cap on the hood is rubber/plastic and keeps falling off, even when stored in the bag. Still looking for a hood replacement for that, or maybe I will go like you do with no hood at all.
Thanks Aviram, yes I use no hood on many lenses and often unbranded eBay caps that are cheap and can often stay on better.
LOL You spend $2,000USD for a Leica lens that has vignetting and fringing that has to be fixed in editing? I have a $600 Fuji 16mm f2.8 that is perfect. So for $2,000 you'd think the Leica lens would be flawless. I keep hearing stories about expensive Leica gear that has drawbacks (bodies and lenses). Luxury priced junk?

@@jimmason8502 still I believe that this leica lens is smaller than the Fuji you mentioned. Plus it is full frame. I don't think you can get that fixed in edit.
Personally speaking, in general, I don't like by-wire focus, so I would prefer a leica lens (or any other M lens by Zeiss for that matter) over other mirrorless lenses.
My hood is metal. No vignetting nor distortion. You must have an older version of the lens.

Focal length for street is subjective. 28mm is too wide for my taste
Thanks Daniel, yes I'm not a street man myself as you may know ifd you've seen my work but I find 28mm better than 35mm for a walkabout lens but actually 21mm in a city environment (or wedding).
