Thanks for kind comments and apologies for the late replies, but we’ve just arrived in Iceland and it’s been a very long day. We set off at 9.45am this morning and arrived in Vik approximately 12 hours later. Time for a good nights sleep before heading down to the beach for sunrise and then another 200k drive tomorrow 👋
I really, really like you, your personality and your approach to your images. You so very down to earth and so open that I can not help think you are someone that lots of folks like being around. Thanks for your videos. At 83 I sometime feel it is too cold or hot to go out and take some photos. You inspire me to get away from the computer and JUST get out. Keep up the good work. PS I am lucky that I live in sunning Northern CA. where the weather is mostly fantastic and there should be no reason to stay inside.
Hi Edward and thank you for the extremely kind comment. As we get older I think we have to adapt our minds to our physical abilities and not let the past hold us back. At the moment I can still hike certain low mountains and fells, but I know I can’t work like I used to. In my 20’s and probably like yourself, we had so much energy and our bodies recovered quicker than they do now. I think the aim of life is to do as much as possible every day, regardless of what we could do in the past. Even if that means driving to our favourite place and either shoot from the car or a park bench or a gentle stroll. I’m a great believer of going to bed tired. I think it’s good for the mind and body. Have a great week sir 👍
Excellent -)))) I love east Anglia even though I live in the NW. Spent some happy times down there over the years. Love Cambridge, your lucky to live in the area and work in Cambridge. Your images of the punts... Gorgeous and the ones with building interior warm lights spreading their glow.. fabulous. Great vlog, look forward to seeing more.. watched all your previous ones. :-) Have a great time in Iceland.
Morning Richard and thank you for the lovely comment, I really appreciate it mate. You’re right Cambridge is a beautiful place and I am lucky to work in such an historical city. I’m also really pleased with the punt images, I thought they worked out well considering the weather. I had a beautiful sunrise yesterday in vik but today is heavy rain. Hopefully this will clear by mid morning and then the weather picks up as the week goes on. Have a great week Richard 👍
Morning Adrian, I hope you’re well mate. We had a fantastic day yesterday with a good hike followed by a sandstorm on the diamond beach. Very cold and windy but today is looking a lot calmer. Take care Adrian and have a good week 🍺
Hi Darren I never knew Cambridge could look so good, it's opened my eyes to maybe shooting here round Waltham Abbey Oh and the shot with the gold disc in it would look stunning if in mono and the gold colour. Simply stunning colours on all shots Look forward to the next video.
Morning Gary, Waltham Abbey is good shout, plus the rivers not to far away as well so perhaps combine the two. The forecast in Iceland is clear skies tonight with a possibility of some aurora action and so I’ll hopefully come away with an image or two from today’s shoot. Thanks for watching Gary and have a great week mate 👍
Now I’m in Iceland John, I miss the rain. The winds are brutal!! We travel 170k today from Hof to vik and so slow and steady is the order of the day. Still, at least it’s not as icey as I’ve seen it in Feb and March. Thanks for watching John and take care mate 👍
Morning Fabrizio, Thanks for watching and I’m pleased you enjoyed the images. I was quite lucky with the 1st image of the punts as there was a very small window when the sun broke through the clouds and lit up the scene. The other shots you’re referring to were shot in the morning on the way into work, around 6am at blue hour. Have a great week Fab 👍
Morning bud, The blue hour shots were taken in the morning, not at night. Even in the evening, Cambridge is packed with people and so I prefer early mornings, especially of a weekend. It’s nice to have a little alone time in before the city comes to life. Thanks for watching and I hope you’re having a good week 👍
Ok thanks. I’ve only been to Cambridge once, and that was when I collected my weather photographer award. I probably should have stayed over to see a bit more of it.
Loved those first couple of images mate, had a lovely soft feel to them. Nice thing about Cambridge is you got some nice 'landscape' type opportunities by the river as well as the street stuff....and if you like bikes, you're onto a winner!
Morning bud, Yeah, landscape photography in a city is my idea of street photography 😂 It’s very wet here in Iceland but I managed to grab some shots of a beautiful sunrise yesterday down on the beach. Hopefully the rain will pass by mid morning and then the weather is picking up as the week goes on. Plus there is a chance of some aurora tonight and so I’ll hopefully get a shot or two. Have a great week J
Hi Bern, I hope you’re well mate Yes, it’s not exactly my thing, but I did manage a few images that I was pleased with and despite the poor weather, at leased shooting local enabled me to get out. Take care bud 🍺
Morning Val And thank you for the kind comment. I’m pleased you liked the 1st image and I have to say I’m really pleased with that one as well. Iceland has been a mixed bag so far (Which is par for the course here). I had a beautiful and quite unexpected sunrise yesterday in vik, but today has started off with heavy rain, but I hopefully be able to get out by mid morning. Thanks for watching and have a great week val 👍
Im soooo behind on watching vid on here. Sorry! But I think u nailed the shots. Really love the fall colors in your shots. This really inspire me to go out and capture fall up here. Thanks Darren and have a great weekend :)
Morning Stefan, where have you been brother!? 😂😂 I hope you’re well though mate and I hope you manage to get some nice shots of the autumn colours. I’m in Iceland at the moment and there’s not really any autumnal colours here, but there’s plenty of snow covered peaks to photograph 😉 Take care bud and happy shooting 👍
Great Video I think I have tried shots from everyone of the locations you visited in this. BUT watching this i need to visit the same time as you, like you said it looks completely different at that time of day
Morning Scott, I struggled at the mill pond by the Granter pub but the other locations worked quite well and as you say, timing is key. 2 hours after shooting mathematical bridge, tourists were queuing two deep to photograph it. I’ve always found dawn quite a nice time, especially of a weekend. Take care Scott and I hope you’ve had a good week 👍
Seems we share the same complaint; I see the best potential shots whenever I have no camera with me. Anyway, you captured some nice shots in this video, well done.
Morning Paul, For the most part, the drive is pretty dull and uninteresting, but now an again the mist rolls across the fens and with a low sun the views look beautiful. These are the days where I never have my camera 😔 Thanks for the comment mate and have a good week 👍
Morning Andrew That’s very kind mate, thank you. To be fair, I’m quite pleased with how some of them turned out. Especially the images with the punts and the bridge with the street lamp during blue hour. It’s a very wet start here in Iceland today but hopefully I’ll be able to get out later today. Have a great week matey 👍
Love the modern building across the bridge image and the last 2, the punts from the bridge and the reverse image same spot. Great video, thanks for sharing Darren 👍
Morning Mark I really liked the image of the bridge and building your referring to. It’s also quite nice to see a modern building that fits in nicely with its more ancient predecessors. I’ve left a very rainy U.K. to only to swap it with a very wet Iceland. Hopefully this wet spell won’t last long and I’ll be able to get out around mid morning. Plus the forecast is clear skies tonight and so fingers crossed for some aurora activity Have a great week mate 👍
Great images Darren. I have had a couple of goes at old street lights at night in Dartmouth Devon. I shot them all hand held, exposing for the highlights & all shot in B&W. I switched the Fuji to B&W so I could really see the composition. I have never been to Cambridge, but it looks as though it would have great potential to do the same. This way you don't have to shoot people.
Morning Nicky, I’ve taken many hand held shots over the years but I’ve never really been pleased with their sharpness. I really should play around with handheld more and as I mentioned on the video I had every intention of leaving the tripod in the car, but wussed out at the last minute. I do like watching street photography videos from other creators but I get a little uncomfortable in doing it myself. I’ll stick to inanimate objects that can’t get upset 😉 Have a great week Nicky and you should really visit Cambridge for a weekend, I’m sure you’d love it 👍
Morning Steve, I shouldn’t really say this but Oxford is better than Cambridge. OMG in going to hell for that comment 😱 As always Iceland is amazing, beautiful, cold, windy and brutal all rolled into 1. It’s my 4th time here and I love it Take care bud 👍
@@DarrenKnightPhoto haha I won't tell anyone if you don't 😉 I've been to Oxford once and struggled but it is a lovely place. I know it's swarming with photographers but I do still want to go to Iceland.
Steven Musgrove Photography iceland is beautiful and brutal at the same time. Over the last 2 days we’ve had extremely strong winds where I’m struggling to even open the car door. The beaches are covered in sandstorms and freezing temperatures., But don’t be put off by the weather and tourists, it’s an amazing country and I’ll certainly return for a 5th time 👍
Great video, just goes to show you can get good images, whatever the conditions. I'm no expert on street photography and like you, I don't really shoot it. But to my thinking street photography is about catching life on the street. I would class this type of photography as Cityscape, even if a lot of people wouldn't think of these type of photographs, when they hear cityscape. But I must admit it's this type of image I gravitate towards when I find myself in a town, city etc. Anyway these are my own thoughts, and obviously people have their own ideas. Keep up the good work, love your channel.
Morning Steve and thank you for the kind words. After some thought and reading other comments, I think your interpretation of street photography is the perfect way to describe it. Street photography is about capturing life.............brilliant 👍 My photos were almost landscape images within a city setting. God, I’m so one dimensional 😂😂 Take it easy Steve and have a great week mate 👍
Nice set of images Darren, I’ve been to Cambridge a few times but it’s always been too busy for photographing ( In my opinion) was there a bomb threat to get it so quiet 😂
Hahahaha. Morning Mark. Early morning and a few selective angles can work wonders 😉 In all fairness a few hours after I shot mathematicle bridge the bridge was packed with tourists. In fact I did video them standing 2 deep to view it and photograph it but I didn’t use the clips in the video. Have a great week mate and thanks for the comment 👍
Lovely warm images, although you didn't look warm. Do try to take more architectural and let the people creep in occasionally, although the more street photography you do the less you carry the tripod. It doesn't always have to be pin sharp to be good.
Morning Iain And sorry for the late reply. Architecture is fine, in fact I quite like shooting that style of photography especially at dawn or dusk or at night. When it comes to a tripod, I’m quite methodical really. I like to step back, check my framing and make minor adjustments to the composition. With hand held I find my shots are never as good. With hand held I always manage to crop something out of the frame, or something needs a little more breathing space etc...... I’m just an old fart who’s stuck in his ways 😉 Anyway, Iceland is bloody freezing again and the winds are brutal. We’re leaving Hof today and heading to vik and so the drive is going to be interesting 🤔 Take care bud and have a good week
