- In this edition of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, we are honouring the dynamic musical partnership of Subramaniam Lakshminarayana and Kavita Krishnamurti, a couple who have elevated Indian Classical music to unprecedented heights.
Subramaniam Lakshminarayana, an accomplished Indian violinist, composer, and conductor, has been steeped in the traditions of classical Carnatic music and Western classical music. His discography, highlighted by the release of albums like "Global Fusion" in 1999, has garnered widespread critical acclaim. With over 200 recordings, Subramaniam has not only produced numerous solo albums but has also collaborated with renowned musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, Ruggiero Ricci, and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
Joining her is Kavita Krishnamurti, an acclaimed Indian playback and classical singer who has left an indelible mark on the music industry with a staggering 50,000 recorded songs in 45 different Indian languages. Recognized for iconic tracks like "Hawa Hawaii," "Bole Chudiyan," "Kay Sera Sera," and "Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast," she was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2005.
In this conversation with Smita Prakash, the duo reflects on their 25 years of musical partnership and its integral role in their love story. Kavita Krishnamurti delves into her journey from being a jingle singer to becoming one of Bollywood's leading playback singers. Meanwhile, Subramaniam Lakshminarayana shares insights into his unconventional path, obtaining an MBBS degree and later forsaking a medical career to pursue his passion for the violin. They also delve into the implications of artificial intelligence in the realm of music and singing. Subramaniam shares anecdotes of collaborating with legends like Yehudi Menuhin and Gangubai Hangal, while Kavita Krishnamurti reminisces about her experiences with stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar, Hemant Kumar, and Manna Dey.

Lovely listening to this couple...Kavita ji you are so good, your voice even while speaking is so melodious
Kavita ji talking feels like she is singing a song ....❤
Yes i too felt the same
Kavita Krishnamurthy Ji is Absolute Legend...🤍
Glad Smita Ma'am Hosted Them....✨✨
Today I saw a very different face of Smita Ji. You're such a well versed interviewer. I love you so much for your knowledge of music.❤
What greatness! Both of them
When you have two guests of such high calibre and one of them is seen has popular and another eclectic it’s not easy to balance. But Smita ji managed it very well. She is not gossipy or fawning.
One thing is common for all leaders is you have to start with humility and success follows. Wonderful listening to them
My wife and I like your podcast Smitha ji and listen to it always. Now that I know you are a kannadiga, is indeed a great feeling as a kannadiga myself.
Having legends LS ji and KK ji is fantastic..
Dr. Subrahmaniam and Kavita ji, thanks for the insightful podcast. We enjoyed the concert of Dr. Subrahmaniam and Ambi in Cleveland a few years back. The auditorium was so quiet and the evening was so joyful . Can't forget that experience.
Very special show, smithaji. L. Subramaniam did medicine same time as me and have seen him in intercollegiate cultural shows and of course am a big fan of Kavithaji. Enjoyed the show. 🙏🇮🇳🇺🇸
Brilliant conversation with beautiful souls.🙏 Thank you Smita ji.
wonderful podcast. Kavitha Krishnamurthy is so humble .... One request to you Smithaji.... kindly refrain from interrupting in the middle of the conversation
What a session!!!! Magical, beyond words. Thank you Smitaji for hosting Dr. Subramanyam and Kavitaji. 🙏🙏
One of the best interviews I have ever seen!
Love you, Smita Prakash!
What a brilliant video. So needed. Schools and parents both need to organise sessions on bullying- although in my experience bullying still continues, at least it opens the door for dialogue and help when a school recognises this.
Very illuminating podcast, Hearing Kavitaji"s musical journey made me emotional. The innocence of 70's and 80's India came back to me! Thanks
Another feather in your cap, Smita! What a fabulous subject and the guests of Honor. . . .!!
both legends. blessed by sathya sai baba. great to see them both encourage that children should learn music. being a student of music helps one develop discipline, concentration and stimulates parts of the brain that cant be activated by textbooks
Excellent podcast Smita Ji धन्यवाद 👌🙏
Smitha love your podcssts, you make your guests so comfortable, bring out their best. Thanks for letting us know more about these legends
Though I had watched the duo being interviewed in a lengthy show on Lallantop, yet I watched your show again because I am a big FAN of Smita who brings out the best out of her interviewees, and her research and respectful questioning is quite probing without being intrusive. Above all Smita too is a Kannadiga like me and also an NRSI-North Resident South Indian like me!
Subramaniam sir's voice! Beautiful....
They complement each other so well!
Yet, the violin is the king!
Thank all three of you for this interview, a rare gem!
What a wonderful podcast! Such a lovely sharing of ideas, thoughts, and emotions. Many thanks Ms. Smita.
This is one of the masterpieces in Podcast. Thank you Smita
Great to see and hear two greats in music. I had a chance acquaintance with Ms Kavita Krishnamurthi when she was accompanying late Shri MannaDay. The duet ‘tu chupi he kaham’ song still resonates in my mind. The song has much variety and mood changes and it was a great treat ! Smithaji, you bagged a good one today! Two for one!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💐‼️
Amazing conversation with one of the best Mani sir and Kavita mam. Thank you for bringing them.
Fantastic, Brilliant, Amazing 👌👌👌......I had not known about Kavita Krishnamurthy, but yes was familiar with her songs, but I have heard Dr. Subramaniam around 25 years ago, and was familiar with him. I just happened to click on the trailer of this podcast, and was completely taken aback by the sheer insightful nature of discussions, which got me curious to know more, and especially of this simply divine couple who are in a complete state of flow even in their takes of silence. But, seriously it has to be said, Smitaji.....you really compered it beautifully. You were like a sculptor at work with your questions. Overall, there is so much in this podcast to learn from for people cutting across backgrounds, professions and age, about family bonding and devotion, love of art for the pure love of it, being comfortable with oneself. Towards the end, Kavitaji made a very strong point that much as she is a mother and daughter at home, she takes the same mind to work, which today is missing in the artists as they need to project themselves as something else, which is so stressful. That was a truly insightful point that was made. Here's a huge applause for churning out superb piece of work which will inspire all those who listen to it for a very long time. Jai Hind 🇮🇳 !
Very nice interview I am a fan of Dr. L S. I loveKavithajis songs. Best show Thank you.
Amazing podcast with two legends of the music world!! 👏👏👏👏 Thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I was fortunate to have been travelling with Dr LS on one of his flights, I requested his permission to take his pic. I was amazed at his magnanimity when he requested a fellow passenger to take a pic of him with me. It is the humility of these artistes that make them the legends that they are 🙏🙏🙏
I watched their interview on Lallantop too and was nice. But the discussion here is so casual and happy . The couple looks much more comfortable here.
Awesomely awesome session !👌 👌 mind blowing, fantabulous, humble, down to earth couple! Thankyou Smita Ji for hosting Dr. Subramanyam and Kavita Ji ! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Smita Prakash ji is so learned about everything, loved the mention of tanpura replaced by electronic tanpura
Amazing session, almost informative and inspiring. One of the most dignified couples in music...
Fantastic, very musical indeed. Thanks
This was the most fascinating interview I’ve ever heard. My jaw didn’t close through most of the show. Congratulations.
Wow!! I just feel that they don't make musicians like them anymore.......Kavita mam is so genuine and real, both their humble demeanor is a testament to their expertise in their respective genres. My favourite song of Kavita mam is "Pyar hua chupke se" from 1942- A Love Story. Lovely interview!!
Beautiful! So much knowledge and experience in one room❤. In keeping with the musical couple theme, would love to see Vid. Kumaresh Rajagopalan and Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh on the program. Both are Carnatic musicians par excellence! 🙏
What a great podcast Smitha ji !!. Enjoyed every bit.

😊😊😊 Thanks Smita Mem !!
You have very successfully tried to present, the most unassuming and self-effacing couple, who always try to keep away from the Limelight !!
And, just, Music 'n' Music is their World ..
Undoubtedly, they our our Cultural Ambassador of present times !!
This is sucha fantastic documentation- legends indeed and your ability to enable suchan indeoth conversation. I learned so much. I always loved Mr Subramanian Violin-Having all cds but got to know more about Shradhda/Kavitha sister.

Wonderful interview indeed!🙏🏻, all of us know that they’re legends in their own way and field…🙏🏻, but balancing of their passion to the core inspite of so many ups and downs in their personal lives and leading a life as an ideal couple for just ( perhaps one!) major common passion… MUSIC And thereby leading us by their own example … a big Namaskaram to both of you…🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

" Maestro " is a great Honour for Violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam.
