Norwegian Patriotic Song: Norway in red, white and blue

- Inspired by the libretto lines from an “underground cabaret” written shortly after the World War II invasion of Norway on April 9, 1940, lyricist Finn Bø - in collaboration with Arild Feldborg and Tobias Bernhoft - wrote “Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått,” but not until the end of the war in 1945.
The melody, which was now “resurrected” for peaceful purpose, was penned from “across the border.” Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson’s catchy march-like tune - actually commissioned by the Swedish Government to stimulate the sale of war bonds (Försvarsobligationer)(1941) to strengthen the Swedish Defense Department - soon caught on in Norway as well, but was quickly banned by the occupation forces and NS (Nasjonal Samling, the National Unification Party).
With the “super patriotic mood” reawakened and allowed to freely resurface following the end of World War II in 1945, the song became - and has continued to be - one of the most beloved among Norway’s patriotic songs.
Verse 1 of the final version paints a picture of the Norwegian landscape. A second verse (not included here) describes the frivolities and enthusiasm of the graduating students (Rødrussen), while the third verse is a reminder of the trials and tribulations of World War II.
The common theme of strong love and patriotism for Norway and its flag is painted in Red, White and Blue throughout the poem.

I would like to point out a minor mistake in the video. The very last piece of text is actually "Vi er Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått", and not "Vi vil kle deg i rødt, hvitt og blått"

Those lyrics are correct. The song is normally sung with those lyrics, but for some reason, the ones who performed that song decided to add an extra line of text which is "Vi er Norge i rødt, hvitt og blått". The two last lines of text are not identical.

This song has become an unofficial "national anthem" - really! Every school child learns it before each 17 May, our Constitution, or National Day. However, it's a Swedish tune... never mind that. But you should google Lalla Carlsen Norge i rødt hvitt og blått - she sang it in 1945 in front of resistance soldiers and others. In one stanza she sings about she and he who fought during the war. Now they are sitting on a bench in the park in 30 degrees centigrades!!! The official text says 20 degrees...
Its true hey even some of the people in my home town actualy salute while putting upp the flag this is to remember the about 20 people who defended my home town during the war and my home town is skarnes wich is in sør odal in the eastern parts of norway
As a swedish person, if I ever experience the beauty that is Norwegian villages on 17th of may, I'll more than gladly sing along in my Swedish language. We are of the same culture, I can understand any norwegian with extreme ease, and I understand your culture, since they're a copy of each other! Nothing separates sweden and norway, it's just an imaginary line

a forgotten history in ww2 for all other than norwegian history interested people. In 1941 transported 40 percent of all oil products over atlantic to england. Gratitude to Russia to beaten hell out of nazis, Norway was a very small part of it.
@Rød sol The russians did not liberate northern Norway. That is appeasing claptrap propaganda. The russians went into Finmark county to chase away the germans further from Russia's border. That was their sole intention, not to liberate norwegians. That some norwegians was "liberated" in Finmark was a sideeffect of the russian agenda, and when the russians came the germans had already fled while the norwegian civilians were hiding in caves. When russian soldiers was detected the norwegians came out from their hidings, that's all. They would soon have become liberated by norwegian and allies troops anyway.
A little later on we saw how the russian "heroes" how they "liberated" Chechoslovakia, Hungary and other nations by terror and brute force. Honour should be granted those who deserve it. Regarding the supplies to Russia with the Liberty ships, that they should first of all thank USA for. Norway played just a minor role. However, Norway was the first to respond by deploying the most professional deep sea divers in an resque attempt to save the crew on the sunken submarine Kursk.
Now Russia has become a totalitalian fascist state, just as evil and deplorable as Hitler-germany's Nazies. Russians are currently committing warcrimes and genocide in Ukraine, what they also have done in Poland, Chechnya and Syria to mention a few. Slava Ukraine! 🗽

Norwegian seems to have a sentence structure very similar to English.
Old English and Old Norse were pretty identical back in the days. But English has been so influenced by other languages other than Germanic ones over the centuries. But in the end, it's easy for Norwegians to learn English and the other way around.
It's very similar. And "easy" to learn, depending on your definition of easy.

Because it is a march. (2/4 time signature) Because marches are considered military/ war music, Norway's national anthem is not a march on purpouse because it is about peace, and is one of if not the only national anthem that isn't a march.
