  • Rockwell B-1B Lancer Nighttime Departure
    EAA AirVenture 2018
    Wittman Regional Airport
    Oshkosh, Wisconsin
    Wednesday July 25, 2018
After the Wednesday night show was cancelled due to threatening severe weather, this B-1B Lancer was still waiting for it's departure. A select many individuals did stay on the airfield to catch this absolutely AMAZING departure. The aircraft came from the 7th Bomb Wing out of Dyess AFB and utilized the callsign CROOK01. The cancellation of the @EAA's Wednesday night show was justified, as there was a powerful and ferocious set of thunderstorms that rolled through Oshkosh and neighboring communities about an hour after this video was shot.

In 1986, I worked on the B-1B assembly line for Rockwell international at the palmdale, ca. Factory installing energy transfer systems for the 4 ejection seats that were in each aircraft. At the time, this thing was complex beyond belief!

This is a Dyess AFB "DY" Bone from Abilene, TX. I was 10 when the first B-1B was delivered to the USAF at Dyess in 1985. In the almost four decades since, it's become a normal daily occurrence for the afterburners to shake the entire metro area. I'm sure our friends in Rapid City, SD, (Ellsworth AFB) can relate!

Sometimes the enemy only took to caves when one of these buzzed them in the mountains. The earth itself shakes when one of these birds buzzed you. Mustve been a respite for the boys on the ground. And the ordnance was heavy if a second pass was needed. But the B1 is so powerful it rarely took a second pass. One and the message was received.
The noise is one they learned quickly. Like several EF5 dropping on you. These birds don't play and they learned. But you can't hear them until they're overhead
