Yes, make sure to check with your local. My local asked me to email it ahead of time. They didn’t ask me for a list of tools I’ve worked with but they will ask you if you’re comfortable working with power tools during the interview.

My dad also wrote me one but he is an inside wireman and was my boss when I was a material handler. I wouldn’t recommend that your parents write you one unless you’ve worked for them and are in some way linked to the electrical trade. Have you ever had a job? As a 18 year old who will be graduating high school shortly, is this an option for me or do I have any “prerequisites” before I can apply for this process (schooling, other job, etc)
Can I go to trade school to learn more on the theory and academic side since I've been out of school for a while and struggle with math? Or would it better to take a remedial class for math at a college if that's what I mostly need help on? With the the trade school, after about a year when you graduate you're considered a second year apprentice. The college also offers electrical in their vocational programs.
@@HabituaILineStepper I'm not the guy that posted that but here's my experience with a degree from one of my local community colleges. I struggled to find a job at some larger companies due to that being my only relevant experience in the field, having additional college education before hand, and general job finding blues. I did, however, get a non-union job at a smaller (mid-sized) company and I start on the first, and I believe that the trade school and talking to electricians, former and current, helped with that. At the very least it'll help you network and get some good references. As for how trade school will go with the union, it'll likely knock off some classes off the required schooling (although depending on your union/branch it might not) and might bump you up in the rankings for an interview assuming you do well on the test. Personally, my trade school had an exit exam that was a sort of mock journeymans exam mixed with the union electrical apprenticeship exams and I don't think anyone in my graduating class scored under a 70% on it, well except for a guy that didn't take it, so it will likely help you to gain confidence in the application exam and prepare for it, however it is 1-2 years out of your life outside of the trade. My state makes it worth the time, but yours might not.
Probably a very dumb question. But just want some clarification, When they asked about a previous time you worked in bad working conditions, is that meaning environmental?
Thanks for this video, it's very helpful ☺️. I got my interview coming up on the 24th of this month. When they asked you why do you want this job were they pretty much asking you why you want to be an electrician?
@@SparkysJourney Hey man, so I finally interviewed. I ranked #105 at my Local 48 in Portland Oregon. Trying to find people who ranked similar to me so I can ask how long it took to get called. I applied 2 months ago for the JATC program still waiting on it. I've contacted a Local Union 86 guy that gave me his card. I've been very eager to work in the Electrical field while waiting to take the test. Told me to contact him next month which I will. But due to the whole COVID how difficult do you think it is to get into the Apprenticeship now and trying to work in the Union?
Towards the end of mine they were asking if I wasn’t picked would I come back next time. Makes me feel like I’m definitely not getting picked. Huge bummer.
I wouldn’t feel discouraged. They ask everyone that same question, including me. They want to know how dedicated you are. If someone said “no I probably wouldn’t come back” then they know that candidate isn’t serious. You are an investment and they just want to make sure you’re in it for the long haul.
Can anyone help me I am 19 yrs old with no prior experience in electrical trade.I am doing all the possible research and it seems like ibew isn’t accepting applicants at the moment here in NYC does anyone have anything that can help feel stuck…
Was there a paper full of questions that they gave you when you entered or no? Another person on RUclips said that there was a paper on the desk when he went in.
I did mine yesterday. I went into a room with 7-8 Foreman’s and I was sitting in the center. They told me to relax and it was really informal etc. no paper in front of me, the guy literally asked me…. Tell me about yourself what do you like to do? Scared of heights? Why do you want this apprenticeship? What interested you in this field since you have no prior experience? It went pretty well for me I think. I wasn’t nervous and I managed to make the panel laugh without trying so that’s a plus. 😭
I have my interview scheduled for April 19th, I was able to skip the aplitude test because I already had experience in the field. The weird thing is that the union hall just randomly called me up and offered me a job working for one of their contractors. So basically I'm now a member of the union, yet still interviewing for the apprenticeship.
Weird! Do you have experience as a journeyman electrician? Are you applying for an apprenticeship? Either way experience goes a long way. Good for you! I’m still waiting for that call
I'm not a journeyman, I've worked as a maintenance Electrician for 9 years and I have an associate's degree in "Maintenance Electricity". It's really hard to follow the unions whole hiring process. I hope you hear something soon!
For the questions are u afraid of heights, are u comfortable using tools, and do u have any electrical experience are those yes or no questions or do i have to elaborate on them
I noticed on another video, you mentioned you didnt have prior experience, is that with construction in general? I'm about to hand in an app to 46 myself but I only have retail experience.
I didn’t have experience as an electrician but I have worked as a material handler for two union shops. Any experience in The field will give you a leg up in the interview. Experience aside, Ultimately they want someone who is committed to the program and is in it for the long haul. They don’t want someone who they think will drop out after 2 years. It all comes down to the interview. Show them that you’re committed and show them you are serious. Good luck!
@@SparkysJourney Not quite! I just turned in all of my app paper work. I suppose I meant we are both pre apprenticeship but I am a few steps behind you.
If you finish trade school you will probably have a leg up on someone who didn’t go through trade school. Ultimately I think experience is everything. If you have any experience in the trade you will be put near the top of the list (contingent on test scores and interview scores) But above everything they are looking for people who are going to commit and finish their apprenticeship. They want to invest in you and they want to make sure you are in this for the long haul. They can really tell if you are serious or not during the interview so make sure to study. Show them that. Show them that you are dedicated. As far as knowing someone In The union, it probably won’t make a difference. The whole point of the union is to be fair and make sure everyone is treated equally. That being said it doesn’t hurt and I’ve heard of guys getting in faster than normal because of who they know. Each local is different and each state is different. Some states are in desperate need of apprentices and you might fly through the process. Other states are extremely slow and it might take years to get in. I’m still on the list and the entire process has taken over a year for me (coronavirus has been a big factor) Anyways Good luck and I hope to see you out there!
Hello, I'm basically applying for apprenticeship program and after filling out the application they told me to wait some time. I have basic experience but I would like to know what you recommend to do now. Thanks
Hey i know this is old but i had my interview today and it seemed like it went very good but it only lasted about 6 minutes , but after every question they told me “ that’s a great answer”. So now I’m wondering if a shorter interview is a bad thing or not with the ibew
@@SparkysJourney i did the helper program because I didn’t have job experience but unfortunately I couldn’t stay because it didn’t pay well enough to live off of.
All they care about is experience and who you know. I've scored high and even perfect scores on their aptitude tests and always get rejected or passed over no matter what. They say they don't require experience, but of course if other people apply and have experience, they'll get hired first no matter what, so that's pretty misleading. My opinion is your best bet is to apply when the economy improves and fewer people are looking for stability vs bonuses/bells/whistles/etc, fewer competition.
I got into one of the top locals in the country with no experience! (Just material handling for a couple months like 10 years ago). From the time I applied to the time I got that letter it took about 1.5 years. I applied when I was 29 and didn’t get the call until I was 31. I know it can be discouraging but you have to stick in there! Re-apply if you need to and stick with it. I’m sorry that you are going through this, I know what it’s like.
I’m not sure I understand your question but I’ll try to answer, just let me know if I didn’t answer. I would say 35 pretty good. I wouldn’t call it “great”.. you really want to be in the top 10 because they usually only pull 10-15 at a time. The closer you are to 1, the better your chances.
Does everyone have to do the aptitude test regardless of which type of electrical work they want to do? I'm mostly interested in doing residential work. How brutal was the math section on your test? I haven't gone to school since 2006 and my math was pretty meh. I passed with C's and I never really got to Algebra because they just kinda gave me the "no kid left behind" treatment. Khan Academy has helped a lot though, I'm not pretty damn good at long division and multiplication and starting Algebra 1 soon. Did you have any problems with the math part? Like, they don't start throwing linear algebra at you in the test do they? lol
Every local is different right now. I applied to two locals and one didnt require the test because of Covid. The other local required a certain score for each program I believe. Inside wireman and residential both have to get a 5 or higher (out of 9). L/E had to take the test but their scores didn’t matter. It was just for “educational purposes”. Do you have at least two years of algebra on your high school transcripts? That is a requirement. The Math section is half the test and it’s multiple choice. It’s mostly algebra and graphing. It wasn’t hard for me BUT if you struggle with algebra it might more difficult. I would suggest taking a few courses on Khan Academy and watching as many RUclips videos as you can. If you fail the test you won’t be able to retake it for 6 months so it should be taken seriously. Good luck!
Hey sorry for the delay! Did you do your interview yet? I actually just rehearsed some basic questions with my family memebers. It helped a lot! Get lots of sleep and make sure your hydrated

I think it went well but I’m not gonna get my hopes up we shall see what happens
I'm still waiting to get called and I'm a Union Electrician already.
I read that you are expected to bring a portfolio with :letter of intro, letters of recommendations, lists of tools you worked with, types of jobs you've done etc. Is that true?
Yes, make sure to check with your local. My local asked me to email it ahead of time. They didn’t ask me for a list of tools I’ve worked with but they will ask you if you’re comfortable working with power tools during the interview.
interview for ibew 269 coming up next week thank you for the insight 🙏🏿
Thank You For this Video. This was Useful
Congratulations man!
I'm applying at 46 as well and have a couple questions for you.
1. How many panels members were there? (I plan on brining portfolio's)
2. Did you have to wear a mask due to covid while interviewing?
Rank 36 is good for that local from what I understand btw
Awesome! Maybe we will bump into each other?!
1) there were probably 4-5 panel members. All wearing masks.
2) yes you will have to wear a mask 😷
Thanks for your comment and good luck to you!
Hey, I have an interview this Monday, what kind of things did you take to your interview? Recommendation letters?
Sorry for the delay! I took my portfolio which consisted of my recommendation letters, resume and cover letter! So it’s been three months since you asked so I’m assuming you interviewed already? How did it go?
@@SparkysJourney This might be kind of a silly question but where were your recommendation letters from? Previous bosses? I'm starting my senior year of high school and am wondering if I should get letters of recommendation from my teachers?
@@thelonewanderer420 wow you’re young! That’s awesome. Ok so I worked for an electrical contractor as a material handler when I was in collage. The owner of that company wrote me a letter without me even asking. Word got out I was applying so he wrote me a letter. I also received two from two of my most loyal customers (I’m self employed as a furniture delivery driver Right now). My dad also wrote me one but he is an inside wireman and was my boss when I was a material handler. I wouldn’t recommend that your parents write you one unless you’ve worked for them and are in some way linked to the electrical trade. Have you ever had a job? Any bosses or supervisors would be a good place to start. If you haven’t worked yet then teachers would be a solid choice as well! That’s so cool that you have figured out what you want to do! Good luck!
@@SparkysJourney Thanks! I have had a summer job for the past two summers working for the city doing cleanup so I'll reach out to them and will definitely be talking to my teachers. Your videos have been a big help so keep it up!
A speed interview with organized information delivery. Hmm. So they are looking for quick thinking information processing.
Just got my aptitude test results today and I have a interview the 27th and now I’m nervous lol
As a 18 year old who will be graduating high school shortly, is this an option for me or do I have any “prerequisites” before I can apply for this process (schooling, other job, etc)
Gotten have 4k hours i believe
My interview is tomorrow and I'm losing my shit haha

How'd it go!?
Yes! How did it go?
@@SparkysJourney how long after you applied that they gave you the test date

Would you say that is an age limit for taking this rout
Can I go to trade school to learn more on the theory and academic side since I've been out of school for a while and struggle with math? Or would it better to take a remedial class for math at a college if that's what I mostly need help on? With the the trade school, after about a year when you graduate you're considered a second year apprentice. The college also offers electrical in their vocational programs.
Hey man did you ever go through with trade school? I have the same exact problem. My math was always bad
Is it common to work from heights? Not terribly afraid of them but I’ve also never had anyone spot me lol
I passed my aptitude test today so im waiting for my interview to be scheduled! Did you give them a portfolio or resume?
Heck yeah! That’s awesome! Yes I emailed them a portfolio containing my letter, resume, and letters of recommendation
Real awesome to have videos from real people about this!
Is a letter of recommendation needed ?
@@jesussaves6510 Not needed but highly recommended

Probably a very dumb question. But just want some clarification, When they asked about a previous time you worked in bad working conditions, is that meaning environmental?
Thanks for this video, it's very helpful ☺️. I got my interview coming up on the 24th of this month. When they asked you why do you want this job were they pretty much asking you why you want to be an electrician?
Nice man! Good luck! Yes exactly, they want to know why you want to be an electrician.
Thanks man!
@@SparkysJourney Hey man, so I finally interviewed. I ranked #105 at my Local 48 in Portland Oregon. Trying to find people who ranked similar to me so I can ask how long it took to get called. There’s probably a lot of factors. Any ideas?
How’s your ranking going? Last video I watched your rank changed a bunch of times.
@@dustinvaldeztv man it’s really hard to say. Every local is a little different. I ranked 35 in Seattle and it took 7 months from the time i interviewed until I got accepted. If I had to guess it will be way faster for you because this is the busy time! There is a lot of work out there. Watch my most recent video! Just got in!
@@SparkysJourney Aye! Congratulations! 🎉 I’m excited for you man. Great work! Yessir, I’ll check out your latest video. 🤩
I just got a call from my local IBEW I pray I can get in 😭I go Tuesday so nervous
what questions do they ask?
is it bad if i bring up lots of money being a reason i want to be and electrician? or will that bring me down a couple of points?
I applied 2 months ago for the JATC program still waiting on it. I've contacted a Local Union 86 guy that gave me his card. I've been very eager to work in the Electrical field while waiting to take the test. Told me to contact him next month which I will. But due to the whole COVID how difficult do you think it is to get into the Apprenticeship now and trying to work in the Union?
Covid really threw a wrench in everything. Hang in there! Have you heard anything yet?
Towards the end of mine they were asking if I wasn’t picked would I come back next time. Makes me feel like I’m definitely not getting picked. Huge bummer.
I wouldn’t feel discouraged. They ask everyone that same question, including me. They want to know how dedicated you are. If someone said “no I probably wouldn’t come back” then they know that candidate isn’t serious. You are an investment and they just want to make sure you’re in it for the long haul.
@@SparkysJourney good to know man. Did you ever end up getting sent out to a job?
@@Alex-jo2oi not yet. I’m low on the list so should be soon (hopefully)

@@Itslewcario what did you say that made them laugh lol and what local did you apply to
How long do i have to wait till they call me or message me after i submit a survey online?
I hope you hear something soon!
ranked #13, lets goooooooooo
Where do you find your score?
I ranked 1st on the rank list but at my local it only lasts a month. I never got in unfortunately
For the questions are u afraid of heights, are u comfortable using tools, and do u have any electrical experience are those yes or no questions or do i have to elaborate on them
is there any certifications i can get to improve my chances of getting hired in the union ?
Not sure myself. I’m only Forklift certified and I mentioned it as a backup for proof that heights doesn’t bother me. Hope it helped out
Thanks bro appreciate it
Did they let you use a calculator during your test?
No but they gave us scratch paper. You don’t really need a calculator
Thanks and another question what state are you in cuz I’m in So Cal and most of the programs are still closed do to Covid
I noticed on another video, you mentioned you didnt have prior experience, is that with construction in general? I'm about to hand in an app to 46 myself but I only have retail experience.
I've been trying to get into Stockman/Installer gigs to put construction on my resume but you seemed to place pretty well?
I didn’t have experience as an electrician but I have worked as a material handler for two union shops. Any experience in The field will give you a leg up in the interview. Experience aside, Ultimately they want someone who is committed to the program and is in it for the long haul. They don’t want someone who they think will drop out after 2 years. It all comes down to the interview. Show them that you’re committed and show them you are serious. Good luck!
@@SparkysJourney Thanks dude! It's nice to see someone in the same stages as I am in the same area! Good luck my man, I'll see you there!
@@Syd_PrezTeej what stage are you in the process? Have you taken your aptitude test yet?
@@SparkysJourney Not quite! I just turned in all of my app paper work. I suppose I meant we are both pre apprenticeship but I am a few steps behind you.
I’m trying to get into the union when I finish my trade school what do you think my chances of getting in are if I know someone in the union also
If you finish trade school you will probably have a leg up on someone who didn’t go through trade school.
How do you see your rank?

What’s a good response to why should we hire you. I can’t seem to think of one. I have my interview this Friday. Really nervous

Where did you apply?
@@charrohernandez6835 Houston, TX
I got into one of the top locals in the country with no experience! (Just material handling for a couple months like 10 years ago). From the time I applied to the time I got that letter it took about 1.5 years. I applied when I was 29 and didn’t get the call until I was 31. I know it can be discouraging but you have to stick in there! Re-apply if you need to and stick with it. I’m sorry that you are going through this, I know what it’s like.
@@SparkysJourney damn it takes a lot of time. Do you know if we can re-interview
Yeah that’s what I also think. They go for the experience unless there’s no one else.
does a college degree increase your chances of getting in?
When you said rank and lowest is better what’s the highest rank like you got 35 is that high or low ?
I’m not sure I understand your question but I’ll try to answer, just let me know if I didn’t answer. I would say 35 pretty good. I wouldn’t call it “great”.. you really want to be in the top 10 because they usually only pull 10-15 at a time. The closer you are to 1, the better your chances.
So 35 would be low!
@@SparkysJourney yes you answered my question perfect..and to add another question to it whats the highest it goes ? Or does it not top out ?

Good luck!
what local are you trying to get into ?
Local 46 🤞
