Future geek on a budget here
Should I even bother making a purchase on a reflector telescope if my budget was around $ 500? Could you legitimately get a decent one for that price? Or do you have to start dippin into the thousand dollar range in order to get your moneys worth?

Yes! There are a variety of high quality reflecting telescopes in that price range. In fact, larger reflectors tend to be less expensive than most other types at the same aperture, which makes them great for astronomy on a budget. Why isn't "equatorials" mentioned? Because it's a mount? Then What is "Dobsonians" doing there? It's a Newtonian reflector on a alt-az mount.

Since we see Dobsonians as great introductory scopes for new users, and since their visual distinctiveness makes them easy for beginners to recognize, we decided to point them out as a great all-in-one package that also provides new users with an easy-to-use mount.
