Since 2009 that I moved to Korea permanently, I have been working with various kpop artists and except the remixes I have produced several original songs and directed kpop music videos. Areia Remixes are re-creations of the original songs by using only the vocals and the music video of the original song. The original instrumental is not used and a new one is created from scratch, sound by sound, note by note, to fit the original song in the same way an original song is written. Despite the skill and knowledge required to remix songs and create instrumentals, it's only a tiny fraction of the total production. Each Kpop product involves dozens of creative people in order to come to life and its their amazing work that gives the quality to the final product, including this remix. From producers, to lyricists, arrangers, sound engineers, art teams, choreographers, stylists and make up artists, filming teams, directors, editors and colorists to the marketing and development teams, you are enjoying the result of well planned and designed sophisticated product. My remixes step on the advantages of all that hard work and merely present a different version. By supporting the original artists you give the chance to all those creatives, including myself, to express. Thank you everybody! I’m so flattered with your overwhelming response and how much you like this remix! I’m very happy you are enjoying this, alongside the original song. Being an original content producer myself though, I want to point out some very important things.
First, although it does change the vibe, the instrumental of a song is just a tiny part of the production process of a K-pop product. While creating good instrumentals requires special techniques and a creative mindset, it’s certainly not the hardest or most important part of a K-pop product. Starting with the song, the melody of a song (the melody that the lyrics are sung in) is the most defining, and hardest thing to get right. Then, there are of course the lyrics. Sometimes pop lyrics might sound a little simple, but creating such simple lyrics with actual meaning and balance, is a huge challenge. Those two factors together (melody and lyrics) are what makes the core of the song. Anything you put under it (instrumental) will work in some way, providing it’s created in the right key. Of course, some instrumentals and arrangements are more masterful than others, but the key is the song it self.
Second, a pop song is created for completely different purposes than a powerful EDM remix. Had Blackpink released such a heavy EDM song, it would tire a large percentage of their fans after a couple of listens. Some other people though, like you, might enjoy this heavier and more intense experience. Being more powerful, does not in any way, make it universally better. It’s not easy to make something powerful, but at the same it’s not easy to make something to appeal quite well to everybody. The original version, with its charm and detail, is a masterful example of how to create a wonderful instrumental to appeal the best, on average, to the vast Blackpink fanbase.
Third, you are not just listening; you are also watching an extravaganza of visuals. Without the visuals, the experience would be severely lacking. Especially for K-Pop that is mostly experienced and communicated through visuals. Those visuals are a result of the work of many dozens of creatives to make the girls look absolutely stunning, and can’t even begin to describe how that part alone is much more complex, technical and artistic than the song itself. I won't even go into the thousands of hours of training by masters, for the girls to sing, dance and perform this way...
Long story short, if this remix is good for you, it’s because the original song, music video and all the work required to produced it, was great already. I have merely re-rolled the dice, a dice that was masterfully created by YG.
